Kendrick Lamar Signs Global Admin Deal With UMPG
Kendrick Lamar has signed an exclusive global administration deal with Universal Music Publishing Group.
In a report from Music Business Worldwide, Jody Gerson, UMPG’s Chairman and CEO, states that “Kendrick Lamar is not only one of the greatest lyricists that has ever lived, but he has done as much or more than any artists to promote much needed change in our society through music.”
Gerson continues by saying that herself and her “colleagues at UMPG are deeply honored to be afforded the opportunity to join Kendrick, Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith and the TDE family to help forward his unique and important vision.”
The 13-time Grammy Award-winning rapper, songwriter and producer continues to have a legendary career.
Lamar has raised the bar with the release of multiple No.1 records and albums including Damn, Untitled Unmastered, Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City, To Pimp a Butterfly and the soundtrack, Black Panther: The Album.
With all of Lamar’s accolades, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his album, Damn. This Pulitzer made Lamar the first non-classical and non-jazz artist to receive it.
Generally, “an administration deal marks a partnership between a songwriter and a publishing administrator, meaning the songwriter retains ownership of the copyright”, according to Complex.
UMPG current roster includes several artists like Justin Bieber, SZA, Imagine Dragons, Nicki Minaj, Billie Eilish, Justin Timberlake, Post Malone, etc.
