On November 9th Will Smith opened himself to the world like never before with his new memoir “Will.”

According to many sources, the memoir explores the most intimate details of Smith’s life and relationship, including his innermost feelings on Tupac. And as The Washington News Post notes,

“The bombshells just keep coming as the intimate details of his [Will’s] life once again make headlines.”

Smith on Tupac

One of the passages that seem particularly eye-catching is Will’s intense feelings about Tupac Shakur. While some fans are in shock, others are not so much. It is no secret that Jada Pinkett Smith once had an endearing relationship with the late hip-hop icon. In a 2021 MSN article, she explains the complex nature of her and Pac’s relationship.

“We were an anchor for each other,” she said.

And in his memoir, Will admits suffering from raging jealousy when it comes to the late legend and how Jada felt about him.

Smith’s Case of Humanity

Many are questioning, but why a fit of raging jealousy?

In a particular candid section of the book, Smith reportedly wrote,

“He was PAC! and I was me. I hated that I wasn’t what he was in the world, and I suffered a raging jealousy: I wanted Jada to look at me like that.”

For some, this is particularly eye-opening. How could someone which such celebrity, someone on top of the world, be that jealous?

The answer, although complex to a few it is pretty simple. Despite his celebrity, Will is human, and humans often suffer from a case of humanity.

And in his words,

“I was too immature.”

The Takeaway

Despite the glaring headlines, the transparency and the level of maturity Will Smith demonstrates with his latest work are celebratory. He is not the first to open his world for others to connect and find common ground. And assuredly, he will not be the last.

But for him, it is about more than the headlines. As Smith once said in an earlier interview,

“It’s been a labor of love.”

So for those with genuine interest to delve deeper, they will have to read the memoir to draw their conclusions.
