Comedic legend Anthony Johnson, known for roles in Friday and House Party, has died.
The cause of death has not yet been released, but according to TMZ, Johnson’s nephew said he “was found lifeless in a store earlier this month in Los Angeles and rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.” His representative, LyNea Bell, confirmed the death to The Hollywood Reporter. Johnson was 55.
A Compton native, the actor found his first big break in 1990’s House Party where he played E.Z.E. The film has since become a classic ode to hip-hop culture. After the breakout role, Johnson pursued a successful stand-up career. However, he is best remembered for his performance as the scheming Ezal in Friday, where he stole scenes alongside Ice Cube and Chris Tucker. Sometimes credited as “AJ Johnson,” the actor also appeared in Lethal Weapon 3, Menace II Society, and the I Got The Hook-Up film series.
Friends and fans lovingly remembered the comedian via social media, where “AJ Johnson” was trending Monday morning. Friday co-star Ice Cube remembered him as a “naturally funny dude who was straight outta Compton at the same time.”
A wife, brother, and three children survive the actor. Bell wrote: “We are praying for all those that were touched by his comedy, acting, but most of all his life.” Rest in Peace, Anthony.
