Kanye has rebranded plenty of times throughout his career, from quirky College Dropout to dark and brooding Yeezus. His newest musical approach is heavily gospel-inspired and might’ve caused some friction with fellow rapper Nicki Minaj.
Nicki solves the ‘New Body’ mystery
Since releasing the teaser for her single ‘Do We Have a Problem’ last month, Nicki has been on a press stint. Kevin Samuels, 97.9 The Box in Houston, and The Morning Hustle are just a few of the platforms Nicki has graced with her presence recently. Undoubtedly, the Queen rapper is becoming quite the social butterfly. One of her more attention-grabbing interviews however was with Hot 106 earlier this week (Feb. 2), where she revealed the reasoning behind ‘New Body’ never dropping.
Around the 15 minute mark of the interview with Mike D and Bekah Berger, Nicki was asked about her verse on ‘New Body’ never seeing the light of day. ‘New Body’, featuring Ty Dolla sign and Nicki, was allegedly set to be included on Kanye’s now-scrapped ninth album Yandhi.
“I respect everybody and where they are in life and where they are spiritually,” Nicki starts. “The public adored ‘New Body’. ‘New Body’ was the biggest hit record that never came out.”

“Kanye made me write my ‘New Body’ verse four times over, in order to fit into where he was creatively and spiritually in his life. She explained. Minaj then confirmed Kanye’s recent spiritual awakening is the reason why the track never got an official release. “I missed it by a year I guess[…]now if ‘New Body’ had been out when he was not in his gospel sort of era, then it would’ve seen the light of day.”
The hit that never was
While it didn’t appear Nicki had any hard feelings regarding the missing song, she did appear blindsided by Kanye’s recent profanity-laced Drink Champs interview. “I go on the internet a few months later to see him on Drink Champs, you know, rolling a blunt, smoking- I don’t know what he was doing but I said ain’t this a b——?” Take a look at the full interview below:
