Fans of Star Wars and the ever-suave Lando once embodied by Billy Dee Williams have been waiting for updates on the new series.
The Lando Calrissian Series Announced
Two years ago, fans of Lando from the epic Star Wars saga got a real treat. It was announced that a series focused on the character would be coming to Disney+, one of many upcoming shows following the mega-popular Mandalorian Series. So naturally, fans were more than eager to see this story told.
Who’s Lando
Lando was a smooth-talking intergalactic gambler, businessman, and general. He was well-known as the pilot of the Millennium Falcon. And his character was pivotal in the Star Wars saga. In 1983 Billie Dee William’s casting was historical. Williams was one of the first titular Black men in the series. This was another notch on William’s belt, as he had already made a name for himself.
According to a source, the artist was under contract with legendary Berry Gordy at the time of casting. He proved to be the perfect pick. When he stepped on the set, he was mesmerizing. Undoubtedly, he played Lando with unmatchable panache. However, although desired, his character never received its own storyline throughout the years. So, when announced in 2020, the fans were ravenous. But the wait was on.
Status of the Lando Series
The lack of talks left many fans skeptical. Would the promise of a Lando series be fulfilled? Kathleen Kennedy reported on the status of the Lando Calrissian’s show. According to Kennedy, the show’s progress rests on Donald Glover’s timeline.
Glover holds the Reins.
This is a shock; for some, but not so much for others. After the announcement of the series, many were left to wonder who would reprise the role of Lando. Glover’s name was thrown around primarily because of his casting as Lando in the movie Solo. However, whether he would play Lando in the series was not definitive. Kennedy’s response clears everything up. In speaking of Donald Glover, this is what she had to say,
“You need to ask Donald; he’s the one that holds all the cards here. But there’s no movement. I will say that, honestly, it’s not for lack of trying. It’s that he’s a very busy guy.”
So until Glover clears his calendar, there will be no featured series for Lando.
Bitter and Sweet News for Fans
This news is unfortunate and fortunate. The execs are ready to start, and there is a writer and director aboard. However, Glover is currently working on many projects, so it may be a while before the Lando project commences. The word is that Glover is currently working on the rumored remake of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, a 2005 super-spy movie with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. With hope, his calendar clears soon.
