On the heels of his upcoming new album, A$AP Rocky recently sat down with Interview Magazine to discuss the current state of rap music. Being in the game for more than a decade, Rocky believes that rap music is currently stuck in adolescence, mostly due to the internet.
He spoke with comedian Jerrod Carmichael about the topic. “Rap is in its adolescence and it’s been stuck here since Soulja Boy,” he said. “Now, rap is stuck in this braggadocious, adolescent space. It’s not as mature.” Carmichael then spoke about Jay-Z’s song “Moonlight.” He notes that it is the “first rapper” he ever heard speak about family life. Rocky then expresses that adding Both go on to talk about toxic masculinity, fear, and fatherhood.
Soulja Boy Responds
Soulja Boy has since responded to the comment Rocky made. “Come on, man. Stop listening to people, bro,” Soulja said in an Instagram Live video. “Niggas don’t know what the fuck they talking about, on gang. That’s what I found out, bro. These niggas don’t be knowing what the fuck they talking about, bro.”
A$AP Rocky’s New Album
While there is no album title yet, Rocky’s new album is on the horizon. In an interview with Dazed Magazine in May, he mentions that he was about done with the album and had made visuals for the songs as well. “I’ve been shooting so many visuals for it. I don’t want to be cliche or sound like a salesman, but I’ve pushed myself to the limit on everything. Going from that industrial, subversive sound from Testing and then graduating with a more polished sound…I just like where it is.” It will be his first album in four years. He has since released “D.M.B” with its music video featuring Rihanna.
No word on when the album will be released but there may be a hint for when. The rapper was announced to play New York’s edition of Rolling Loud along with Nicki Minaj and Future. The festival takes place September 23-25 at Citi Field in Queens.
