Pulitzer Prize, UCLA, and Hip-Hop’s Brightest Mind—The Kendrick Lamar Blueprint

No one has garnered as much attention as Kendrick Lamar in recent weeks. The accolades and praise keep flowing in. Some people point to “Not Like Us” as his magnum opus, marking his success and noting its origins as a diss track. This achievement is merely the fruit of a meticulously nurtured foundation. Kendrick has cultivated this foundation organically, honing his skills through personal practice and formal education, including time spent at UCLA. For those curious about the legitimacy of his rumored attendance there, the institution has confirmed that the creative has refined his craft at their esteemed university.

Lamar and Polishing the Pen

Polish only comes after building, and Lamar has been honing his craft for years. He didn’t just start writing verses to defeat an opponent; he’s been using his pen to give voice to complex narratives for a long time, drawing from his own experiences as well as those of his people, his community, and a broader audience.

Lamar has made the most of his 37 years. Though he started where many do, he has risen and excelled. While much of this can be attributed to his talent, one cannot overlook the importance of nurture. The seeds of his success were planted in his youth as he was crafting stories long before transforming them into lyrical narratives under the pen name K Dot.

On His Way Up

Lamar’s initial encounter with mainstream success occurred in 2012 with the release of his project “good Kid, m.A.A.d City.” However, this was merely a step in his ongoing journey. He persisted in proving to the world that he was far from a one-time sensation. Lamar represented the essence of a modern poet with a penchant for depth and symbolism in his works. He was eventually recognized for these qualities. As noted by Biography,

“He made history when his record DAMN. became the first of its genre to earn a Pulitzer Prize in 2018.”

Distinction Earned

Those familiar with what it takes to earn a Pulitzer understand that these awards are reserved for the most esteemed and accomplished individuals in the literary world. However, it wasn’t this achievement that had the entire global population buzzing, drawing attention to this young artist. It was his bold display of confidence during his message at the 2025 Super Bowl that stirred more than just controversy.

At first glance, his message at the 2025 Super Bowl appeared to be a repetition of his response to a rap battle with Drake, but that was only a small part of the narrative. This moment cemented his skill in weaving deeper, more powerful messages into his art through an artistic presentation. It’s not just about the music; there’s much more to unpack here.

K. Dot Levels Up

Recently, a photo has been circulating on social media showing Kendrick Lamar in a classroom, reportedly taken on the UCLA campus. Some were surprised, while many praised the virtues of an artist demonstrating intellectual depth. Others questioned the authenticity of the photo, wondering if it was genuine or simply a staged photo op.

Kendrick Lamar and UCLA: The Confirmation

UCLA has confirmed that this is not a publicity stunt—Lamar truly did attend the University. As an X account notes,

“The University of California, Los Angeles, confirmed K. Dot’s attendance via Twitter, noting that the pictures are from 2022. But the lesson remains the same—UCLA is where you level up.”

For those familiar with hip-hop artists, this isn’t particularly unusual.

Artists earn their titles for a reason. Many achieve this distinction due to their diverse talents or unique ability to deliver messages in unprecedented ways. A significant number of artists have pursued or are currently pursuing higher education.

Hip-Hop Community and Education

Success in the entertainment industry demands more than just talent; it requires intelligence. This isn’t to say there haven’t been many who are seen as lacking business acumen. However, an equal number are recognized as intellectuals who have pursued advanced studies. This group includes Nicki Minaj, J. Cole, Megan Thee Stallion, Ludacris, and Childish Gambino—just a few who have walked the hallowed halls of higher learning.

What is particularly intriguing about Lamar’s continued focus is the surprise it elicits. Considering Kendrick Lamar’s body of work and accomplishments, his intellect and level of education should be unquestionable and hardly surprising. Yet, here we are.

Lamar and the “Us”

As we wrap up a month dedicated to celebrating and highlighting African-American history, it’s important to remember that excellence doesn’t happen in isolation. It’s not just a product of talent, skill, or ability alone. Instead, excellence arises from a combination of factors—a fusion of hard work, study, and talent. This blend is what has allowed Kendrick Lamar to achieve his high level of creativity. One last thing worth noting is that such a combination is a common thread within the community.

Detroit Teacher Had To Resign Because Of Her Rap Career

Detroit rapper Drippin Honey, also known as former history teacher Domonique Brown, had to quit her school job because her Hip Hop career allegedly “was a bad influence on the kids,” according to a parent’s complaint.

Drippin Honey quit her Taylor Preparatory High School job in February, only several months after starting in August. By the middle of March, the artist’s story began circulating in the media. At the time, the artist commented on the situation online and on TV.

“Recently, I was forced to leave my position due to me being a Rapper,” Drippin Honey wrote on X on March 17. “A single parent’s disapproval led to my dismissal.”

“Nobody even knew I was a rapper until the parent kept continuously complaining,” Drippin Honey also told WDBJ7. “The first meeting that I had with the principal and the dean, they had told me that the parent…felt as if she didn’t like my rap career and that I was a bad influence on the kids because I rap.”

Drippin Honey Gets Support

After the complaints from the anonymous parent, Brown had to choose between her school job and her rap career. “I couldn’t see myself giving up my other passion just because somebody didn’t like it, and they say erase all your content,” Dripping Honey explained. “That was the ultimatum. Erase all your content. I was like, ‘Respectfully, I can’t do that.'”

Nevertheless, many people in Taylor Preparatory High School supported Drippin Honey after she faced a choice between jobs. The former educator was elected teacher of the month in December.

Moreover, Drippin Honey’s students helped her record the “Drippin 101” music video during the last days of her schoolwork.

Some parents also provided support for the artist. “We long for teachers who support our children and who inspire them, and [Brown] was one of those teachers,” one of the parents stated. “So really disappointed.”

Another parent explained that, for her, “It doesn’t matter what you do outside of the education structure. Like, once you leave that particular building, you go on with life.”

The School’s Response

The school itself also provided comments

“Ms. Brown resigned from her position at Taylor Prep on Jan. 24. She was not fired,” a part of the school’s statement claims. “Administration informed her on several occasions she was violating the teacher code of conduct. Students and their parents reached out to us voicing concerns over Ms. Brown’s promotion of her social media accounts in the classroom.”

Their latest creative offering, the Build A Beat Challenge With Ciara, aims not only to encourage increased participation in science, technology, engineering, and math fields. It also aims to highlight the exceptional creative talents of young girls globally by combining music and coding.

What Is STEM

STEM, is an acronym for Science, Tech, Engineering, and Math. But it represents more than a set of initials; it embodies a systematic approach to learning. Pearson emphasizes it as a teaching philosophy integrating four disciplines into a unified program, delivering instruction in real-world applications and teaching methods. This is not an effort pursued in isolation. Many institutions and educational groups actively focus on advancing initiatives in these fields and addressing existing gaps, particularly in the context of the evolving industrial complex.

According to Pearson, roughly 71% of STEM careers are in computing, as per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The high demand for computing professionals is logical, given the increasing reliance on digital technology in various aspects of life.

Consequently, the emphasis on greater attention to STEM is not just a call for progress but a push for preparedness and a pathway to success.

What is Black Girls’ Code

Founded in 2011, Black Girls Code is a non-profit dedicated to engaging girls of color in computer programming education, nurturing their interest in tech. The organization achieves this goal through various methods, including partnerships with volunteers, schools, and other organizations. They have developed both virtual and in-person learning initiatives tailored for girls aged 7-25.

While the primary focus is on coding, the mission extends beyond. The organization’s efforts are driven by a passionate desire to equip the target demographic with the knowledge and confidence to realize their dreams.

The latest initiative, “Build A Beat Challenge with Ciara.” is part of the CodeAlong Program, a collaboration between Black Girls Code and GoldieBlox, a girl-power multimedia company. Furthermore, this marks the second collaborative effort between Black Girls Code and Infosys Foundation USA, demonstrating their commitment to creatively expanding their vision.

Details About The Build A Beat Challenge With Ciara

Infosys Foundation USA sponsors the Build A Beat Challenge, specifically targeting girls aged 13-18. As the star notes

“I am proud to be supporting this initiative and empowering young people to take their passion for music and use it to develop technology skills that can give them a leg up in life.”

Rick Ross Becomes the Topic of Intellectual Discourse at Georgia State University

Rick Ross has once again captured the spotlight, this time for a captivating development. Reports indicate that Georgia State University has selected Rick Ross as the focal subject of a law course.

How He Rolls

Those who know Rick Ross know how he rolls. Rick Ross possesses a signature style and an impressive approach to his dealings. Unlike typical entertainers, Ross stands out as an entrepreneurial titan, boasting an expansive investment portfolio and displaying strategic acumen. Recently, the “Boss” drew attention for a significant addition to his real estate holdings—a property in Miami valued at an impressive $35 million. This is merely one of his holdings.

Rick Ross: On His business

As per a Black Enterprise article from 2021, Rick Ross had already established an impressive entrepreneurial footprint, including a record label, 25 Wingstop franchises, partnerships with major spirits and food brands, and a stake in VERZUZ. And this is what has demonstrated his strong entrepreneurial drive.

Fast-forwarding to 2023, according to Wealthy Gorilla, Rick Ross’s wealth has continued to burgeon. His estimated net worth has now reached $45 million, solidifying his position as one of the most affluent rappers globally. Given his remarkable financial success, it’s no surprise that Ross has been chosen as a prime exemplar.

Rationale for Selecting Rick Ross

This selection was made by the director of Georgia State’s Entertainment, Sports, and Media Law Initiative, Professor Mo Ivory. For Ivory, Ross was a logical choice. As a devoted hip-hop enthusiast, Professor Ivory found Rick Ross’s musical talent impressive and his ambition and business acumen truly exceptional. According to a Hiphopdx article, as Professor Ivory delved deeper into Ross’s multifaceted ventures, he recognized the immense educational value his students could gain. He stated,

“… My students would learn about a businessman who turned his love of music into an empire that includes massive real estate holdings, food and beverage franchises, investment in the car and bike industry, literary industry, and equity ownership.”

In essence, Rick Ross’s life story exemplifies what many aspire to achieve. It not only reflects his unwavering work ethic but also highlights his keen insight, intellectual prowess, and strategic genius.

In The Mind of a Business Strategist

Rick Ross has consistently been vocal about his aspirations and the hard work he’s poured into reaching his current stature. In 2021, he offered a compelling definition of a black entrepreneur, describing them as dreamers who persistently work until their dreams materialize – a statement with substantial wisdom.

Given the totality of his sentiments, one thing is evident. Ross places considerable emphasis on the labor involved, asserting that to become a CEO and executive, one must first adopt the mentality of a diligent worker, regardless of their initial position. What’s truly remarkable is that Rick Ross’s own life journey serves as a tangible and living testament to the truth of these words.

It Starts Somewhere

Hip-hop is undeniably abundant in not just musical talent but also intellectual capital. While Rick Ross undoubtedly stands among the top echelons of business strategists in the industry, he’s not alone. Many hip-hop artists are leading by example, offering valuable insights into multifaceted success. Unfortunately, not everyone recognizes this; some may limit their interest to music alone.

However, it’s essential to recognize that most of these artists are not one-dimensional; they possess multiple talents and operate on various fronts. Understanding how these figures function is invaluable and one of the keys to growth and progression. The more you know, the more you grow.

Summing it Up

So kudos to Mo Ivory for choosing to highlight Rick Ross’s accomplishments in the form of a law course. Hopefully, this marks just the start of more comprehensive initiatives that celebrate individuals within the hip-hop community who consistently exceed expectations.

As the past 50 years of hip-hop have shown, and as exemplified by Rick Ross, greatness is embedded within the very essence of hip-hop culture.

Minnesota’s HSRA Leads the Way: Saving the Lives of Youth Via Hip-Hop

The state of Minnesota is leading the way in demonstrating hip-hop’s power to shape culture and save lives. Here’s what they are doing.

HSRA (Highschool of the Recording Arts: Invests in the Future

Whitney Houston once crooned, “[She] believed that children were our future, teach them well and let them lead the way. Show them the beauty they possess inside.” And in Minnesota, David T.C. Ellis is doing just that. His creation, HSRA, affectionately known as Hip-hop High, stands as a testament to his commitment and the positive outcomes it has yielded. Over the years, Hip-hop High has indeed functioned as a beacon of hope for countless young individuals in Minnesota, making a significant impact on their lives and even, in some cases, saving them.

The Difference Maker

HSRA High School of the Recording Arts, Minnesota

HSRA. Image Source: HSRA

How does one use education and music to save lives? They do so by developing a curriculum that reaches the student where they are at. And this is what Hip-hop High has mastered.

Hip Hop High School isn’t your typical educational institution. It’s a public school with a distinctive mission of transforming its students’ lives through a uniquely crafted curriculum. According to The 74,

“HSRA teaches core subjects through a musical lens, enabling students to develop skills and agency to deal with real-world issues.”

The program’s effectiveness is undeniably clear, and the testimonials of students like Cameron Keys underscore this. In fact, Keys enthusiastically attributes his life’s transformation to the institution, going as far as to say it saved him. As The 74 records, according to Keys,

“HSRA help put him on a pathway to where he is in life now — living in Tennessee with his wife and working a stable job as a Walmart manager.”

Ultimately, it’s not astonishing to witness such remarkable outcomes. When a project is fueled by genuine passion and unwavering love, the results it produces are unquestionably powerful and impactful.

Ellis’s Dream: HSRA

Interestingly, Ellis didn’t initially set out to establish HSRA; rather, it emerged from his heartfelt desire to contribute positively to his community. According to HSRA, in 1996, Ellis endeavored to start a pilot program. It is noted,

“Ellis started Studio 4 as a recording production studio.”

Amazingly, the youth came in droves. Recognizing the thirst in the community and seeing a young populace in need spurred him to stretch. Those seedlings of inspiration eventually led to the development of an “educational pilot program.” So, in 1998, what began as a spark was fully manifested. And the HSRA continues to grow and be a haven in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Why This is Important

Such a gesture stands out in the context of Hip-hop’s 50th anniversary. In Ellis’ work, he activates the fifth fundamental pillar of hip-hop, knowledge, one on which all others rest. He illustrates what hip-hop really means as a force of change and progress.

As Midination highlights, Bambaataa’s vision of hip-hop envisioned it as a catalyst for social change, a vision that emphasizes the importance of imparting knowledge, guiding individuals toward understanding, and facilitating practical implementation. This aligns perfectly with the mission and purpose of HSRA, which is dedicated to precisely these principles.

So, at FM Hip Hop, we tip our hats to David TC Ellis for not only talking about change, but being the change.

FM Interviews: Illinois Summer Youth Music Hip-Hop Camp Founders About Their Work and Goals

Ever thought of Hip-Hop as a professional career? The University of Illinois now can help one with that. The school’s summer program, ‘Illinois Summer Youth Music Hip-Hop Camp,’ allows 5-12 grade students to work on their Hip-Hop skills. This summer marked the 6th year of the camp program taking place.

“The Illinois Summer Youth music tradition itself as a whole goes back, I think, 100 years, where students have been coming to campus over the summer to get better whatever musical instrument or discipline they’re studying, everything from show choir to piccolo, black chorus, piano, what have you,” said one of the Hip-Hop summer camp’s coordinators Lamont Holden. “I think it was about ten or twelve years ago they started the tradition of rock camp.”

And then, seven years ago, Lamont and Adam Kruse, another program coordinator, decided to launch a Hip-Hop summer camp program. Turned out Lamont’s and Adam’s idea was long-awaited.

“I’m here at the University of Illinois, and whenever we do something that’s Hip-Hop related, people are like, well, where’s this been? Why has it taken so long? But the fact remains that somebody has to decide to do it,” Lamont explained. “And so I think the basic premise of the camp is that students come, we meet them at whatever experience level they are at in whatever discipline they decide to choose. Whether it’s production, music production, beat making, whether it’s being an artist and performing, whether it’s being a songwriter, whether it’s being a songwriter and expressing their talents that way, or audio engineer.”

Illinois Summer Youth Music Hip-Hop Camp End Goal

Currently, the program offers an opportunity for students to take summer classes in beat-making, DJing, songwriting, and many other disciplines. However, the end goal is even broader.

“The effort that we’re undertaking does not just include this camp,” Lamont explained. “We’re trying to build an ecosystem where we get a chance to work with K-12 students. As we come in contact with these students, they’re talking to us about their interest in Hip-Hop. I remember as a young black kid when I told my elders that’s what I wanted to [work in the Hip-Hop industry], they told me to get a plan B. And when somebody says, I want to play the saxophone, or somebody says, I want to play the trumpet, nobody tells them to get a plan B. [Instead,] they tell them to work really hard. Because there’s already a path outset for you to have a career that way.”

The ecosystem, which Lamont and Adam work on, should allow the camp members to get a decent college education in the field of their interest. “They’ve been coming to camp. They’re getting really good, and they’re thinking about college,” Lamont explained. “Well, now we have a path for them at the university level through music tech where they could study artistry. I teach classes in undergrad for monetizing your music career. I teach classes for audio recording, audio engineering, as well as beat making. Right. So now you were a student that has come to camp. Now you have the opportunity to get enrolled in classes here, and now we can show you how to make music your career.”

Educational Equality For The Deaf: Why Aren’t Politicians Advocating For Our Students?

Deaf and hard-of-hearing children are essential components of our diverse school systems. They bring an exceptional wealth of unique perspectives, talents, and abilities that enhance the educational experience for all students. Nevertheless, despite their critical role in the school community, these children often encounter challenges and obstacles that their hearing peers do not.

Recognizing that these children are just as important as any other student and deserve equal opportunities to learn and flourish is vital. However, it is worrisome to witness a lack of attention and action from lawmakers to ensure that specialized schools for deaf and hard-of-hearing children continue to exist. So, let’s delve deeper into this matter, explore its implications and discover potential solutions.

Rachel Zemach’s Memoir “The Butterfly Cage”

Have you ever wondered why the education of hard-of-hearing children seems to take a backseat to those in power? It’s a concerning trend that appears to persist despite equal access to education being a protected right. The recent passage of the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind bill extension amid anger and hostility is just one example.

Rachel Zemach. Credit: USA Today

Yet, some refuse to let this injustice go unchallenged. Rachel Zemach, a Deaf educator, writer, and passionate activist for Deaf and hard-of-hearing children and adults, shares her story in an upcoming memoir titled “The Butterfly Cage.”

deaf

Through first-hand accounts from her life as a Deaf person, Rachel delves into the differences in thinking between two major and often conflicting viewpoints on how to educate Deaf children. She also explores how she witnessed the impact of these two different approaches on students.

So, what can we learn from Rachel’s experiences and insights? What changes must be made to ensure equal access to education for all hard-of-hearing children?

The Urgency Of Preserving Deaf Culture And Education

Moreover, Zemach shares her perspective on the challenges facing the Deaf community and their education, particularly in light of potential school closures. Drawing from her own experiences as a Deaf educator, she recalls teaching at a renowned Deaf school in Fremont, CA, where she faced a comparable situation. Despite the school’s profound influence on students, with its exceptional language education and Deaf culture, the administration and staff were fearful of its possible shutdown. However, Zemach firmly believes that the Deaf community can overcome these challenges by leveraging their collective voice and advocating for their needs.

deaf

Unfortunately, many schools for the deaf throughout the United States face a dire risk of closure. This is mainly due to the increasing number of mainstreamed students and cost-saving measures in schools. To heighten the situation, hearing politicians and administrators lacking background knowledge in Deaf education or personal experience of hearing loss tend to make decisions about what is best for hard-of-hearing children. However, Rachel stresses the importance of preserving the unique educational experiences and cultural settings that Deaf schools offer. These schools have the potential to significantly transform the lives of hard-of-hearing students.

Empowering Educators To Foster Inclusive Learning Environments For Hearing-Impaired Students.

Furthermore, Zemach is a passionate believer in the capabilities of our educators when addressing the unique cultural dynamics of deafness. She suggests that we assign them the responsibility and authority to lead the way in catering to the diverse needs of Deaf students. By building positive relationships between deaf and hearing individuals and creating an inclusive environment for all, educators can have an incredible impact on the lives of the students they teach.

deaf

So, why not celebrate and appreciate the invaluable contributions of our educators and allow them the freedom to mold a brighter future for our Deaf youth? The journey towards change must begin with those with the deepest understanding of the issues at hand. Can we afford to overlook their voices and insights?

Transformative Power Of Deaf Education: One Student’s Journey From Isolation To Success

Furthermore, it’s worth noting that the transition to a Deaf school had a profound impact on the lives of Zemach’s students. Within a few months, they were able to shed their social isolation, classroom shyness, and playground ridicule and become academically, emotionally, and socially successful. In fact, they were able to make many friends, learn American Sign Language (ASL), and embrace their proud Deaf identity.

In addition to Zemach’s students, Rachel shares the story of a fifth-grade student who had a difficult time in a mainstream school. Despite severe loneliness and even contemplating taking her own life, this student was able to turn her life around after transitioning to a Deaf school. She received an award and formed deep and meaningful connections with her peers within the close-knit Deaf community.

The Fight To Save Schools For The Hard Of Hearing

The all-Deaf environment played a critical role in their success. In that setting, the children feel normal, communicate easily with their teachers and friends via ASL, and have a positive view of their deafness, which fosters their development.

The politicians debating the fate of ASDB fail to grasp how completely different the Deaf community’s needs are from those of other groups. Their decisions could force the Deaf community to fight again to keep their schools open, which are the bedrock of their society. As Zemach says, “there is simply nothing like an all-Deaf environment.”

Creative Evolution Takes Center Stage At Mana Contemporary’s “Out of Character” And “From the Feet Up: 50 Years of Sneaks & Beats” Exhibitions

Attention art fanatics! On Wednesday, April 12, Mana Contemporary lit up the art world by launching two amazing exhibits, “Out of Character” and “From the Feet Up: 50 Years of Sneaks & Beats.” These impressive exhibitions exceeded the typical norms of fine art, showcasing the remarkable creative power of vision and innovation.

“From the Feet Up: 50 Years of Sneaks & Beats” – A Riveting Celebration Of Sneaker Culture And Hip-Hop

“From the Feet Up: 50 Years of Sneaks & Beats” was a fantastic exhibit put together by Sean Williams that honored the exciting blend of sneaker culture and Hip-Hop. The show displayed famous sneakers created and worn by well-known rappers and sports stars. You could see legendary names like Tupac, Public Enemy, Run-DMC, and Beyonce being featured. In addition, the exhibit also highlighted the progress of sneaker design, focusing on how technology advancements and sustainability practices have influenced the industry over the last 50 years.

Sneaker design has come a long way since its inception. Initially, it was designed purely for athletic purposes. However, sneaker design has evolved to solve numerous challenges, ranging from comfort to aesthetics.

Moreover, the growth of the sneaker industry has often been fueled by small yet critical innovations. These creations have improved the overall functionality of sneakers and contributed to groundbreaking inventions. In fact, sneakers have become the ideal medium for introducing new ideas and pushing the boundaries of design.

“Out of Character” – The Evolution Of Animation As A Fine Art

Prepare to be amazed by the incredible exhibition “Out of Character”! Firstly, this display takes you on a journey through the intriguing development of identity through stylized and unique symbolic artwork, which is presented in various mediums, including drawing, painting, sculpture, and moving animation.

Co-curated by Pierogi Gallery and Willy Hartland, this art show was an absolute must-see for anyone interested in the historical context of animation. Furthermore, “Out of Character” is a captivating journey from when animations were seen as just “cartoons” to their recognition as a basic form of fine art. As such, this exhibition perfectly showcases the incredible evolution of this art form, making it a must-visit for all art enthusiasts.

To begin with, early animations and funny artworks were largely disregarded as fine art. Nevertheless, the emergence of Pop Art in the 1960s and the inclusion of cartoon styles by artists like Lichtenstein marked a significant turning point. As a result, boundaries and divisions within the art world were broken down. However, the animations showcased in “Out of Character” are incredibly diverse in subjects, styles, media, and techniques. These include stop-motion, hand-drawn images, computer software, “lo-tech,” flip books, and even live performance projection. Even though some works reference cartoons, they are not solely corporate franchise products. Instead, they are original and individual creations.

Which Renowned Artists’ Creations Appeared In The “Out of Character’s” Exhibit?

“Out of Character” features the works of famous artists such as Greg Barsamian, David Brody, Nicole Claveloux, Hugo Crosthwaite, R.
