Common and Kanye West

The rapper, Common, wishes he made a third album with Kanye West.

The Chicago rapper sat down with Andrew Barber on The Coda Collection to look back on his iconic career. He talked about everything, including wishing he made a third album with Kanye. In the “Story To Tell” segment of the show, Common expressed how he wishes one more album had happened with Kanye.

“I gravitate towards greatness, point-blank.”

Common spoke at length about working with Pharrell Williams, No ID, and the late great J Dilla before stating that he wished he and Kanye West had made a third album together. “If there’s anything that I sometimes wish is, I wished I would have done a third one with Kanye,” he said. “Because everything happens in this divine time, but I would’ve loved to have done a third album with Ye just… And maybe that’ll happen at some other point.”

GOOD Music and Chemistry was always there

Common previously collaborated with Kanye West on Be and Finding Forever while he was signed to GOOD Music. As a result of their chemistry, it’s no surprise Common would be interested in Yeezy producing the third album. Released in 2005, Be marked Common’s return to form after his previous album, Electric Circus, received mixed reviews. That album, in particular, marks a creative turning point in Common’s career.  The shift was notoriously blamed on his time dating singer Erykah BaduBe is considered one of Common’s very best albums. Kanye’s soulful production was the perfect complement to Common’s heartfelt rhymes. The same is true for Finding Forever, a 2007 LP that Kanye also produced.

Maybe Someday Soon

Common also revealed that he wanted Universal Mind Control to be a collab with Kanye. Unfortunately, Kanye was on tour at the time, so he did not contribute to that project. Further, Common wanted a different sound for his 2008 effort, which led to him working with The Neptunes.

While Kanye West has his hands full with the new release of Donda, maybe Common’s wishes for a third album might come true.
