In a sitdown with Sports Journalist Jalen Rose, Doug E. Fresh addressed a lingering question: What happened to him and Slick Rick?
Fresh and Rick, “The Get Fresh Crew!”
Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick were the ultimate collaborators of the 1986, Get Fresh Crew. When they stepped on the scene, they made hip-hop come alive. They didn’t merely come to entertain the masses. They came to transform the culture with their fresh artistry. And they took the Hip hop industry by storm. In the Words of Fresh,
“[We were] creating new styles that never existed,”
So, why put an end to a good thing?
The Disappearance of the ‘dynamic duo’
What happened to the dynamic duo?
According to Doug E. Fresh, the split does not have a juicy rationale. Instead, the two merely outgrew each other.
“I think personally that we were young. We were two different entities who needed room to breathe.”
We can’t be mad at that. Inarguably that explanation is perfectly rational.
No Bad Blood Between Fresh and Rick
Although the masses were probably looking for a more sensational rationale, they didn’t get one. There is nothing extraordinary about moving on due to growth in different directions. If fans were wondering, Doug E Fresh was sure to let them know he and Slick Rick were good.
“But those days are long gone, and now he says, We still family. We have grown, and we close.”
Legends Live On
Both Fresh and Rick are absolute legends; no cosign needed. They helped initiate a new era with their groundbreaking style and approach to lyricism. Their music remains at the forefront of the industry.
“They are two of the most sampled artists in music history,”
a source notes.
So there is no denying their status. The proof is in the work of an extensive roster of icons who went on to sample the duo’s finest. The elite nature of these musical tributaries includes artists such as Snoop, Dogg, Eminem, Beastie Boys, Kanye, NAS, and Beyoncé. That’s extraordinary!
In the words of Ice Cube, “Today is [was] a Good Day,” knowing two hip hop legends kept it one hundred with each other despite their movement in different directions. It remains all love.
So how could it possibly be a bad day? The legacy of Fresh and Rick remains unblemished?
Long live Hip-hop and a couple of legends who were essential to making all this possible.
