Ed Sheeran and Lil Baby have released a “2step” remix. The music video was shot in Ukraine before the war with Russia started. Sheeran has promised to donate the record royalties from the Youtube video to the  Disasters Emergency Committee’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

Earlier this year, Sheeran announced that he would be collaborating with artists from different genres. This is one of the collabs that he was talking about.

The song is a remix of Sheeran’s 2021 song of the same name. It was released with the music video on Apr 21.  The video starts with a message explaining some behind-the-scenes for it.

“I filmed the video for 2step in the city of Kyiv, Ukraine before the devastating acts of violence started to take place. It was my first time visiting the country and I felt so welcomed during my stay there – everyone from the production crew to the many people I met across my days off. Ukraine is a proud and resilient country and I’m grateful to have had the chance to film my video there.”

Song interpretation; both versions

Furthermore, this remix is a response to the original song. Both songs are the same for the first verse. They are both about stress and feeling isolated. They both have the (first) singer dance with the woman he loves all night to ignore the problem. After this, the two versions diverge.

The original version has the singer assume it is just him that feels this way. In addition, he then repeats this self-destructive lifestyle forever. This is shown in the official lyrics video with how the lyrics come out in a strange pattern as it mainly tries to avoid the butterfly that is flying all over the place. It is only hinted that the woman might feel the same to a lesser degree. This is through the smaller butterfly that occasionally pops up.

The remix introduces another seemingly unrelated person into the formula. This person is also feeling the same way. At first, he thinks that a private getaway and cars will fix him, but he realizes that his friends are the answer. By directly stating that the first singer is not alone in this feeling of isolation, it makes the second chorus more hopeful for the future.
