Celine Casts Black Model After Being Called Out by Model Iman
Celine’ casts black model, Karly Loyce, in its Fall Winter 2015 ad campaign. While this shouldn’t necessarily be news or anything surprising, unfortunately it is.
There has always been a lack of diversity in high fashion. The runway shows and ad campaigns that follow consistently follow the pattern of having an all-white cast.
The problem with this is, everybody buys fashion, not just white people. This world, which fashion constantly promotes to, isn’t simply inhabited by all white people. With the world consisting of a variety of nationalities and races, and this being a reality we should celebrate, fashion should reflect that.
Model Iman along with Naomi Campbell and former model agency owner, Bethann Hardison, has been campaigning against the lack of diversity on the runway for over five years now.
Iman and Bethann had this to say to London’s Evening Standard in 2013 regarding fashion house Celine, and its creative director, Phoebe Philo,
“Phoebe Philo [London-born former creative director at Chloë, now at Céline] — she’s a cool girl. But Céline has never had a coloured person showing in their collection. Ever,” claims Hardison. “And yet they have the best accessories; every black woman who has money buys her accessories.” “Not me,” shoots back Iman. “I walk the walk. I can get another It bag. I have my wallet,” she says firmly. “I make a conscious decision not to buy that stuff.”
While we are loving the increased diversity at Celine, we hope it doesn’t stop here. Women from all cultures are beautiful, and representing everyone is only an upgrade for these brands and their products.
We are loving Karly Loyce, and she just recently wrapped up a Giambatista Valli Haute Couture runway show. Check out her Instagram, here. You go girl!
