Fans of Kanye West will be excited by the news that the rapper is releasing a docuseries about key moments in his career. The series, titled jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy, dropped on Netflix February 15 at 8 PM EST.

Kanye himself, however, expressed his dissatisfaction with his role in the editing process back in January. Production on the doc has taken several years by Chike Ozah and Coodie Simmons. The doc takes a look at some of the critical moments in Ye’s career, including the passing of his mother and his failed 2020 presidential run.

The doc starts out during the late 1990s, detailing West’s early as a producer for Foxy Brown and Harlem World. The focus then shifts to the early 2000s, prior to the release of his breakout album The College Dropout.

The footage shown in the doc will certainly trigger a sense of nostalgia for rap fans. It’s also a compelling look into the struggles that Ye faced while becoming one of the biggest musical stars in the world. For some, it feels like he ascended overnight.

Kanye’s elevation into an icon was pretty unusual for its time, and jeen-yuhs does a great job capturing the context behind it. The more emotional parts of the doc come from the scenes with Ye and his late mother Donda. The love and admiration expressed between them is palpable.

The third part of the film contains the more controversial parts of Kanye’s life since his rise to stardom. Subsequent scenes depict his struggle with mental health  in an effort to humanize the mogul. Celebrity or not, everyone has struggles.

Overall, while Ye remains controversial, jeen-yuhs is a great look into one of the most impactful musicians of his generation.
