U.K. rapper Lady Leshurr recently revealed she had an opportunity to write a diss track on Nicki Minaj for $250k. Refusing to take that amount of money because it doesn’t feel right? That takes willpower, and Leshurr proves thats something she has in spades.
Lady Leshurr
The “2gether Now” rapper is known for making fun, playful and interactive videos for her fans. In her Queen’s Speech series, she freestyles on a range of relatable topics that could speak to anyone. Her “Queen’s Speech Ep. 4” video went viral, with fans across the world dancing and singing along. Leshurr had brought something fresh to the entertainment world with the videos, which create the vibe of a tongue-in-cheek rap battle.
The series gained popularity in 2016, when Leshurr’s hard work began to pay off. She won the MOBO Award in 2016, and in 2019 won the award for “Best Rap/Grime Act” in her hometown at the Birmingham Music Awards. She won a second BMA for “Best Solo Female” in 2020.
The $250k Diss Track
They say money is the root of all evil, and it certainly continues to cause global problems when the rich lose sight of their morals. Leshurr is a perfect example of someone that has morals, and the grit to stand with them. Speaking with BBC Three, Leshurr said Atlantic Records offered her a deal to make a diss track on Minaj for $250k, but said no because she just didn’t feel right about it. The rap industry pits women against each other for relevancy and fame, and pushes older artists to the side in the name of new talent. Leshurr proves putting another powerful woman down to get your bread up doesn’t have to be an option. The talented ladies of the industry can celebrate each other, and the grind it takes to be a successful woman in an unforgiving male-dominated industry.
