Martin Lawrence brings the past to 2022
Martin Lawrence ruled the entire 1990s with his run of comedy movies, stand-up performances and TV shows. In the crop of Black comics from this era, he and Jamie Foxx stood out as the young fresh front-runners. Oddly enough, this comedic pair has quite a few notable similarities. They both tried out for “In Living Color,” but only Foxx landed the gig. They’ve both made “Def Comedy Jam” appearances, with Lawrence of course serving as the host and Foxx featuring as a guest. Out of all the traits they share, one is the most vital. Both Lawrence and Foxx have an affinity for impressions and character acting. Specifically, they put these skills to use on their namesake shows “Martin” and “The Jamie Foxx Show.” It always seemed obvious they should work together. Well, Martin Lawrence revealed in a recent interview that this dream is becoming a reality.
During an appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” Martin Lawrence discussed his impressive career at length. At one point, Fallon asked Lawrence about a potential “Martin” reboot. Although the “Black Knight” actor maintained the show is completely over, he’s open to bringing back Shenehneh as a character.
“I think, well, you know, the Martin show was like catching lightning in a bottle, and I don’t think we can redo that again,” he said. “I wouldn’t mind working with the cast again on something, but I don’t think we can do that again.”
An unfinished collab
Fallon then jokingly suggested a “Martin Cinematic Universe,” which prompted Lawrence’s response that he “would love to see a movie with Sheneneh.”
Lawrence subsequently revealed that he had plans to collab with Jamie Foxx on a movie, with Foxx playing his own character Wanda. While this plan clearly never happened, the 57-year-old still has interest in the idea.
“We were supposed to do a movie with Sheneneh and Jamie Foxx with Wanda, but that never came about,” he said. “If we could ever get that together, I think y’all would love this.” If you’re a lover of 90s comedy, you may have something to celebrate.
After all, Martin Lawrence is no stranger to bringing back old roles. He recently played Marcus Burnett for the third time in Bad “Boys For Life.” In addition, he’s played Malcolm, aka “Big Momma,” three times for a trilogy of film installments. Most famously, he recruited the cast of “Martin” earlier this month for a reunion special on BET +.
