Award-winning rapper, music executive, and businessman Master P has spoken out about slain L.A. rapper, Nipsey Hussle, being idolized after he died.
Master P Says Nipsey Hussle Has Gotten More Praise After Death
In a recent interview with HipHopDX, Master P, whose real name is Percy Miller, alluded to the rapper not receiving as much praise as he does now while he was still alive.
“I just think in our culture, it just natural that people just self-hate. They don’t want to see somebody else make it until they [are] gone,” he told the outlet. “You don’t want to tell somebody they [are] great while they [are] alive. That’s the thing that I just couldn’t understand about Nipsey…He was talented [and] put the same record that sold millions of copies only sold 50,000 when he was alive, and he couldn’t get it.”
The 52-year-old added that Nipsey, whose real name was Airmiess Joseph Asghedom, was still in his hometown of Crenshaw right before his untimely death.
“He was like, ‘Man, I put my all into this project…Boss, I did it. This is it.’ Then when it didn’t happen, and just watching the people, this guy [didn’t] know that his funeral was at the Staples Center. He didn’t know that he had that type of love. Let’s be honest, he was still in Inglewood and Crenshaw trying to figure it out.”
Nipsey’s Untimely Passing Shocked The Hip-Hop World
The then 33-year-old musician was shot and killed outside his Marathon Clothing store on Mar. 31, 2019. After being and hit in the head and torso, he succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His untimely passing sent a shockwave through the rap industry as he was a cult figure in the hip-hop space.
Nipsey’s funeral took place at the Staples Center in downtown L.A. on Apr. 12, 2019. He left behind his then-girlfriend, actress Lauren London, and two children; Emani Asghedom–now 13 years old–and Kross Ermias Asghedom–now five years old.
Master P Said The Industry’s Love For Nipsey Has Seemed “Fake”
Despite the beautiful celebration of his life, memorial, and merchandise dedicated to him, Master P said the love has been “fake,” and that it came “too late.”
“Look back before that happened…People would tell him, ‘Well, I don’t think that you got it,'” said the New Orleans legend. “What happened? I mean, it’s the same album. The same album that people love now. That’s the part that I don’t understand. That’s why we got to celebrate us while [we’re] here. Stop it with the fake love. It ain’t for me, but I know a lot of people that he did songs with that we couldn’t get approved or nobody would mess [with]. Now, if you say you got a Nipsey song, everybody want to be on it. It’s too late.”
Nipsey Hussle Looked Up To Master P
Nipsey reportedly idolized the No Limit Records CEO, as he openly expressed that he looked up to him on numerous occasions.
“Master P was an innovator in so many different ways,” he told Billboard in an interview from 2018. “P don’t get his credit, man…He got so successful in music…was the first to do it the way he did it. He put his kids on…turned into a businessman…did films…burned the game out…maxed out.”
The two became friends, and Master P even gave him guidance, but, unfortunately, he never got to follow through with his plans completely.
“This guy was all about being self-made and independent, but it is just tough when [you’re] in the ghetto, and you’re trying to make it, and you have all these dreams, but you almost get there, you go to jail to get killed. That’s been what’s been happening all over the world,” the mogul said.
