Doja Cat And SZA Win First Grammy, Doja Gets Emotional

The Grammys aired Sunday night, and it was a memorable night for quite a few stars. Doja Cat and SZA won a Grammy for their smash pop hit, “Kiss Me More” in the Best Pop Duo Performance category. The song spent an impressive number of weeks at the top of the Billboard charts. The pair was up against some of the biggest names in the industry, including BTS, Justin Bieber, and Coldplay.

Canadian pop-punk royalty Avril Lavigne presented the award. SZA had some difficulty getting to the stage as she was rocking a long gown, stilettos, and crutches. Doja on the other hand came back from her bathroom break just in time. She joked about this at the start of her speech while adjusting her gown. However, despite being known for her goofy nature, she gave the audience one of the most sincere moments of the night. “Thank you to everybody, my team, my family. SZA you are everything to me, you are incredible. A talent, you’re a lyricist, you’re everything,” she said. The pair embraced and SZA gave a quick shout out to Doja, her mom, and God. At one point, the camera cut to Lady Gaga and BTS in the audience, who seemed to be smiling at the special moment.

Doja And SZA’s Long Journey to the GRAMMYs

Both artists have multiple Grammy nominations. There are 25 between two; SZA with 14, Doja with 11. But, this is the first win for both of them, a fact some found surprising. Though some wished Doja won in other categories, this is a significant moment in the singer’s career. At the end of Doja’s speech, she became teary-eyed and said, “I like to downplay a lot of sh-t, but this is, it’s a big deal.” This moment comes after Doja received backlash from fans in Paraguay and SZA got injured the day before the event. Fortunately, Doja and SZA will continue making music and, hopefully, win more Grammys in the future.

Tyler, The Creator Might Change His Stage Name

In a recent interview with Fast Company, Tyler, the Creator revealed that he might change his stage name. The California artist uniquely dominated the past decade of music with his former Odd Future collective. It’s rare to see an artist with this much success & influence change their name this late in their career. If there’s one thing we know about Tyler, he’s hard to predict. Tyler has never expressed any past resentment towards the iconic stage name. Regardless, there’s nothing wrong with making changes like this when you’re as established as he is.

Origin Of His Stage Name

His stage name has an exciting & lengthy origin story. According to Tyler himself, “My stage name was from, I made a MySpace page when I was 13– I had 3 of them.” The artist continues, “one was regular for friends, another one was for something else, and then the third one was just ideas. I would put drawings and photos I would take and upload beats on there.” It’s fascinating seeing how the old platform has impacted many music careers, including Tyler’s.

He also said, “I started using that one more, and random people from Kentucky would be, like, ‘Cool beats, bro!’ And so I just kept the Tyler, The Creator thing going and, you know, I’m 17 in high school, around LA, the name’s getting around, and I kind of just kept it as my stage name.”

Why Tyler Might Change His Stage Name

Tyler’s more mature now than his stage name would imply, and this interview confirms that he’s grown past it. In Tyler’s own words, “It’s really dumb, but it stuck with me, so it just works. But my full name, Tyler Okonma, in all caps, just looks really cool. So you might see more of that, I don’t know, I’m getting older, and I think when people get older, they start to realize shit, you just start changing.”

Are you ready for this new direction & change in Tyler, the Creator’s career? Read more of FM Hip Hop’s featured articles today.

Drake Withdraws From 2022 Grammys

Drake has withdrawn his two Grammy nominations. Perhaps he is sick of the pomp and circumstance of the ceremony.

Drake took the nomination for best rap album with Certified Lover Boy, as well as best rap performance with “Way 2 Sexy”. However, Drake has had the nominations withdrawn. He has not given an explanation why yet.

Over the course of his career, Drake has bagged four Grammys. One in 2013 for Take Care, another in 2019 for “God’s Plan“, and two more in 2017 for “Hotline Bling”.

Drake’s critiques

People is floating the idea that it is connected to what Drake said in the previous ceremony:

“I think we should stop allowing ourselves to be shocked every year by the disconnect between impactful music and these awards and just accept that what once was the highest form of recognition may no longer matter to the artists that exist now and the ones that come after.”

Indeed, when Drake won the Grammy in 2017 for “God’s Plan”, he was criticizing the ceremony. “This is a business where sometimes it’s up to a bunch of people who might not understand what a mixed-race kid from Canada has to say, or a fly Spanish girl from New York, or anybody else, or a brother from Houston, my brother Travis,” he continued. “You’ve already won if you have people who are singing your songs word for word, if you’re a hero in your hometown… You don’t need this right here. I promise you.”

Without Drake, there are four in the two categories. The nominees for best rap performance are Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar’s “Family Ties,” Cardi B’s “Up,” J. Cole, 21 Savage and Morray’s “My Life” and Megan Thee Stallion’s “Thot Shit”. For albums, the nominees are J. Cole’s The Off Season, Nas’ King’s Disease II, Tyler, the Creator’s Call Me If You Get Lost, and Kanye West’s DONDA.

Marilyn Manson’s Grammy Nomination For Best Rap Song Retracted

Today the Recording Academy announced the removal of Marilyn Manson as a Grammy nominee for Best Rap Song.

Marilyn Manson had supposedly earned a Grammy nom for his work on Kayne’s Donda Project. Manson is a known collaborator on the track “Jail,”  But recent revelations are rendering him ineligible for the best rap song nomination.

Was Abuse the Premise for the Retraction?

Rumors have been circulating about the rationale behind the retraction of Manson’s nomination. And it is true that one of the rumor’s behind the retraction was current abuse allegations. However, The Recording Academy has made it clear that the allegations are not the reason for the retraction.

So, what led to Manson’s Retraction?

Reportedly the academy made its decision after the discovery that Kayne did not list Manson as a songwriter on “Jail.” And “Jail” is the track that is up for the award of Best Rap Song.

According to the academy

Marilyn Manson has been stripped of his 2022 Grammy Nomination by the Recording Academy after not being listed as a songwriter for Kayne West’s “Jail.”

Thus, the abuse allegations against the artist have no basis in making the decision.

Did or Didn’t Manson Collaborate on “Jail.”

Manson’s vocals are on the Jail part 2 track. However, as per the recording academy’s statement, there are no credits for him as a writer. Technicality?

Complex notes,

“Although he[Manson] did write for the song’s alternative version, “Jail Pt. 2,” he is not listed as one of the writers for the “most current version of the album.”

And Complex is not the only source claiming that Manson is not a writer on the nominated track.

According to Yahoo news

“Manson — real name Brian Hugh Warner — didn’t write the song he was nominated for, and therefore was removed from the Grammys’ nominations list after it was announced on Nov. 23.”

Fairness and Equity

The Recording Academy attempts to maintain fairness in its nomination and selection process. And out of respect for the craft and all artists, the academy tries to separate the artist’s work from their life when making considerations. As a source notes,

“We won’t look back at people’s history, we won’t look back at their criminal record, we won’t look at anything other than the legality within our rules.”

Based on their rules, Manson simply doesn’t make the cut for a nomination for Best Rap Song.

Don’t Count Manson Out For a Win

Fans of Manson shouldn’t count him out as a candidate for a Grammy win. According to hotnewhiphop.com, Manson’s is still eligible to receive a Grammy for “Jail Pt. 2” on the ‘Donda’ album. This win is possible due to ‘Donda’s‘ nomination as album of the year. So Manson may still take home a Grammy.

One could argue that the retraction of his nomination has more to do with decisions Kanye made. But, in this case, that argument is neither here nor there. But it would be thrilling to hear what Manson and Kanye have to say on the matter.

The Weeknd: How He Found Grammy Success Despite Boycott

This year has been one of the greatest stints in music for Canadian singer The Weeknd. His released his latest album, After Hours, in March of 2020. However, the record continues to make history as lead single “Blinding Lights” is now the top Billboard Hot 100 song of all time. The album, which also “Save Your Tears” featuring vocal powerhouse Ariana Grande, solidifies why fans appreciate The Weeknd’s musical genius. Now, the Weeknd has three new Grammy nominations under his belt, although the artist’s relationship with the Recording Academy has been turbulent.

The Weeknd has openly boycotted the Grammys in the past, after he did not receive a single nomination in 2021. Despite record-breaking streams and a gratifying NFL Halftime Show performance, he found himself “uninvited to the show.”

“Because of the secret committees, I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys,” he said.

The 2022 Grammy nomination list revealed The Weeknd received three nominations, despite last years boycott. Two of the nominations come for collaborations with Kanye West on Donda, and one for a collaboration with Doja Cat.

It is important to realize that The Weeknd stands on his word. The nomination stems from submissions of West’s parent label, Def Jam, and Doja’s, RCA. The Weeknd’s nomination was, in fact, made possible by a recent Grammy rule update. This eliminated a previous rule that mandated songwriters have contributed 33% of a Best Album nominee to receive recognition.

The Recording Academy’s Evolution with Music

The Weeknd’s boycott of the Grammy’s sparked a “f**k the Grammy’s” movement across social media. Fans and artists openly questioned the validity of the Recording Academy nomination process. In response, over the years, The Recording Academy’s Board of Trustees has appeared to keep up with the evolution of music and how listeners consume it.

For instance, in 2014, they allowed samples of previously written songs in all songwriting categories. In 2017, they made streaming-only recordings eligible for Grammys. Still, the changes are not enough for the many artists snubbed of nominations.

Jay Z who is now the most Grammy nominated artist of all time, first boycotted the awards show as early as 1999. At the time, the late DMX was at the height of his career with two No 1. albums. Surprisingly, DMX has not received a single nomination. Artist Zayn Malik has also voiced discontent with the Recording Academy’s progress.

Pressing Onward and Upward

The Weeknd has plenty more in store for loyal fans. In a recent episode of “Memento Mori”, the artist’s Apple Music 1 radio show, he announced he has completed his next album The Dawn, which will come soon. He shared explicit details with Billboard:

“Picture the album being like the listener is dead. And they’re stuck in this purgatory state, which I always imagined would be like being stuck in traffic waiting to reach the light at the end of the tunnel. And while you’re stuck in traffic, they got a radio station playing in the car, with a radio host guiding you to the light and helping you transition to the other side. So it could feel celebratory, could feel bleak, however you want to make it feel, but that’s what The Dawn is for me.”

The Weeknd is also now working on HBO drama series, “The Idol,” The Weeknd will serve co-creator of the show alongside Euphoria creator Sam Levinson. The artist announced he’ll star alongside Lily-Rose Depp and Melanie Liburd of “Power Book II: Ghost.” With an all-star cast and team, the bar is high for the new series.

Although fans still await solid tour dates, his new single with Post Malone offered up a new bop to vibe to.

With the Grammys around the corner, it is unclear if he will make an appearance. Either way, we salute the mega-star.

Jay Z Is Now The Most Grammy Nominated Artist Of All Time

Jay Z is now the most Grammy-nominated artist of all time! Of anyone who has doubted his GOAT status, Jay-Z added yet another prestigious honor to his already lengthy memoir. Mr. Carter, alongside legendary musician and producer Quincy Jones, shared the title with 80 nominations. Furthermore, with the release of the 2022 nominations, Jay Z now has 83 nominations.

His nomination for Album of the Year and Best Rap Song derives from Kanye West’s Donda album. The third from the same Best Rap Song category for the song “Bath Salts” by Nas and the also late DMX.

The Grammy full-circle moment

The honor of this nomination with late Bronx rapper DMX surrounds Hov’s first Grammy nomination in 1999. Jay recalls how he boycotted the awards show due to DMX not receiving a nomination.

However, he had two albums that charted No. 1 on Billboards 200. He has always shared respect for other rappers and also displayed this early on in his career. Listen to this snippet of Power 105.1’s “The Breakfast Club; Rumor Report.

Jay-Z and other Artists demand respect from The Recording Academy

Jay-Z’s decision to boycott the Grammys has seemingly been a reoccurring theme. Several artists have questioned the motives of the academy’s voting standards. This year alone has caused the most prominent artists of this decade to call out the recording academy. They called attention to the lack of gender and racial diversity displayed amongst past winners.

Speculation of a deficiency in the nomination process stemming from 63 years of the Grammys. For this reason, The Weeknd, who had the most successful runs of his career, was left questioning what may be the problem. His LP, After Hours, was on the Billboard 200 consecutively 4 weeks and counting but somehow did not receive a nomination.

“Because of the secret committees, I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys,” he said.

The unleash of f*** the Grammy’s tweets flooded social media. Kanye West, who urinated on his Grammy in frustration, was less than pleased with his standings.

In 2018, Hov led the nominations with 8 but lost in every category. He didn’t hold back on the awards when he and wifey Beyoncé released “APESH –.”

“Tell the Grammy’s f— that 0-for-8 sh–,” he rapped.

Signed, sealed, delivered

The Brooklyn, New York music mogul is coasting his way into history. With his recent induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and now Grammy historical moment, Jay-Z made his name one that will ring on far longer than we can fathom.
