Pete Rock Calls Out Diddy After 2022 BET Awards

The BET Awards brought many people joyous occasions, but it also brought some drama. Puff Daddy took home the Lifetime Achievement Award this past Sunday, Jun 16. Pete Rock felt disrespected when Diddy referred to Bobby Brown as the “first Chocolate Boy Wonder” during his acceptance speech.

Only hours after the BET Awards concluded, the legendary Hip-Hop producer took to Instagram to convey his frustrations. In the post, Rock calls out his fellow New Yorker, Diddy, for failing to credit him as the first Chocolate Boy Wonder.

Pete Rock’s Frustrations Surface

Pete Rock wrote a lengthy post expressing his frustrations about the whole situation. It seems that the Hip Hop producer felt highly insulted by the comments made by Diddy. His post stated, “my gift is from GOD the almighty mister puff smh i made those hits 4real. There is no comparison dude. I been here before you. Dont let em go in on you cuz its alot there.”

Though Diddy and Pete Rock are from Mount Vernon, NY, it seems that Rock feels it was him who really grew with the city. Rock cites things that Diddy did in the past that rubbed him the wrong way. Something like, “you brought biggie to the basement only to diss me later and not use me on any of his projects.”

Rock’s rise in the business came in the late 1980s and early ’90s. Most people know him for work with Common, Run-DMC, C.L. Smooth, and Heavy D. Both Diddy and Rock have proven that they made a stamp on Hip-Hop culture. Though Rock seems disrespected by not having the title of “first Chocolate Boy Wonder.”

BET Awards After Party Turns Into Diddy’s New Video Shoot

The Bad Boy Records executive is possibly the only person who can take a night meant for a whole industry and make it about himself. Diddy decided to take the BET Awards after-party and then turn it into his new music video shoot.

What We Know About Diddy’s New Video Shoot

The Bad Boy Records mogul was already on his high horse after receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award on Sunday night.

Snubbing his girlfriend, Yung Miami, Diddy kept everything in the speech strictly about him and his accomplishments.

Moving on, instead of letting the BET Awards after-party guests highlight his fellow artists and enjoy the night, Diddy decided to make sure the event focused on him and his new music.

The rapper started shooting his new music video with special guests Mary J. Blige and Yung Miami right in the middle of the party. To stir things up, Diddy also told guests they were not allowed to film while he was trying to get everything “correct.” This video is likely for his new R&B album to be released with Motown Records. And the video even has a familiar “Mo Money, Mo Problems” background.

Also, why would Diddy decide to do this in public if he didn’t have everything “correct…”

What a way to ruin a party.

In the video leaked from inside the party, you can also see the producer directing the music video at Diddy’s L.A mansion. You can even hear Mary J. singing over a track while Miami raps. Again all promo for Diddy and his new boutique label Love Records.

Some of the guests who witnessed this event and even celebrated were Chris Brown, Tiffany Haddish, Wiz Khalifa, and Tyga. Bobby Brown and Karrueche Tran also visited.

Lil Nas Feels Hurt By BET

Lil Nas X, also known as Montero Lamar Hill, is an American rapper. Nas even just recently did a collaboration with NBA Youngboy.

This is a significant achievement for him and the LGBTQ+ community. Twitter gives rave reviews about the collaboration. Even though many people support him, Lil Nas X also has a conflict with one of the biggest award shows: BET.

Not everyone is happy, though, about Montero’s growth. He recalls how he felt BET dismissed him after his performance at the 2021 BET Awards show. He faced a lot of criticism from the network after.

Nas then tweeted, saying, “this not over no bet award this is about the bigger problem of homophobia in the black community.”

Lil Nas felt like his own people don’t support his growth.

Some supporters of his notice the more significant issue at hand. A tweet by @arxhiiie states, “jack harlow getting a bet award before lil nas x (despite jacks first number 1 being a lil nas song) is the perfect analogy for how cishet black ppl will support white ppl before they support other black ppl, just because they’re queer looool.”

Twitter user’s comment regarding the BET awards. Image source: Twitter.

BET’s Side Of The Story

The network has stated that they have tried to reach out to Nas to work with him but haven’t heard a response. Montero’s team has seen firsthand how the network has responded to Lil Nas X in the past. “At some point after Montero got off stage, one of the BET producers came up to me,” one member of his team stated. “Before I could even open my mouth, he looked at me and said, ‘That was really fucked up.”

In his latest collaboration, Nas expresses how he feels about the network when “F*** BET” appears in one of the recent song’s intros. A response from BET on the conflict with Lil Nas X says, “its Voting Academy is made up of “nearly 500 entertainment professionals”. They are stating that voting for Nas is not a personal decision. The network’s attempted to allude to Nas that they don’t have anything against him. However, Nas feels it has to do with a more significant issue of lack of representation for queer individuals within the black community.

At the end of the day, some people will feel like Lil Nas pushes the boundaries of Hip-Hop too far. His style is eccentric and unique. Others think that he is making strides in the industry. Lil Nas isn’t biting his tongue. He is sure to constantly express and voice who he is despite things that have discouraged him.

Taraji P. Henson will host the show, broadcasted by BET on Sunday, June 26. The show begins at 8 p.m. ET.

A Successful Career

Diddy is still expanding his reach after everything he’s done. Diddy created Bad Boy Entertainment, the Sean John clothing brand, and the REVOLT cable network, and he owns several other successful businesses. According to BET, REVOLT is the first Black-owned multiplatform cable music network. REVOLT now reaches over 80 million homes.

REVOLT Changes The Game

Diddy makes moves that push the Black agenda forward, especially with the creation of REVOLT. He intended the network to be “unapologetically hip-hop.” REVOLT is made Black for those who are Black. Many have tried to own a platform like REVOLT, but only one man accomplished it.

Jack Harlow’s Nomination in BET 2022 outraged Lil Nas X

American rapper from Kentucky Jack Harlow’s nomination as Best Male Hip-Hop artist alongside Drake, Kanye West, Lil Baby, J Cole, and Future for the 2022 BET Awards created quite a stir in the hip-hop industry. Montero Lamar Hill, popularly called Lil Nas X, singer and rapper from Georgia, tweeted on June 1, “thank you bet awards. an outstanding zero nominations again. black excellence!”.

Harlow’s singles from the album “Montero,” such as “Call Me by Your Name” and “That’s What I Want,” topped the music chart and earned him five nominations at the 2022 Grammy Awards. So, Lil Nas X is flabbergasted with BET Awards nominations by not getting any spots.

Lil Nas X’s Alleged Comment On Jack Harlow As Not-talented

The artist bombarded his Twitter account with a series of comments which he deleted later, “idk maybe 3 of the biggest songs of last year & a critically acclaimed album… i feel like that should’ve helped me a bit. What’s more even infuriating about this ordeal is that it postures Jack Harlow as a representation of Black culture. Why are untalented white artists constantly lauded in rap?” Meanwhile, in Lil Nas X’s chart-topping single “Industry Baby,” Jack Harlow appeared as a guest singer.

Jack Harlow’s Racial Identity Interfering With His Musical Career

Jack Harlow debuted in the rap world with “That’s What They All Say,” which sold unexpectedly high in 2020. His single “What’s Poppin” earned him the most sought-after hip-hop artist title, just like Lil Wayne, Big Sean, and other modern black singers or Grammy nominations. He also made the Number two position on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2020.

However, his racial identity interposed with his musical talents and so-called appeal in a Black dominated hip-hop culture. Sources said Harlow’s album, “Come Home the Kids Miss You,” faced severe criticisms. But it became Number 3 on the US Billboard 200.

Hip-hop As Forte Of Black Artists

Fans accused white singers of benefitting from promoting Black culture. Hip-hop is essentially a development of Black street artists. However, according to fans, hip-hop music always celebrated white mediocrity. In the 2014 Grammy Awards, the Best Rap Album went to “The Heist” by duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, even though their singles of the album were not outstanding.

Celebrating white musicians in the hip-hop genre had outraged many Black singers. They believe Rap music is the forte of Black artists. The space for white musicians in hip-hop and rap culture is still controversial.

BET Awards 2022 Celebrating Black Excellence

The BET Awards 2022, promoting Black excellence, will be held on June 26 in Los Angeles. The month of June is the appreciation month for African American music. BET Award celebrates black excellence in the entertainment, music, and sports industry. To Connie Orlando, EVP Specials, Music Programming & Music Strategy for BET, “For over two decades, the BET Awards has been home to Black brilliance, talent, and creativity, providing unforgettable cultural moments.

We look forward to raising the bar for BET Awards 2022.”

Doja Cat Expected To Take Over BET Awards

The Billboard-winning superstar, Doja Cat is so good at turning heads and catching the public’s attention! The star continues to shine in each award show. Doja leads the BET Award nominations with six nods.

Other than topping this year’s Billboard Music Awards, the 26-year-old achieved her first Grammy in April, where she won Best Pop Duo/Performance for “Kiss Me More” feat. SZA. Taraji P. Henson will host for a second time at the BET Awards. The collab was not only nominated for Best Collaboration but also Video of the Year. “Planet Her,” is also up for Album of the Year, and the artist is also a contender for Best Female Hip Hop Artist, Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, and BET Her for “Woman.”

Although Doja Cat seems to have an abundance of support from her millions of fans, there has been some controversy about what genre of music she resides in.

Since Doja Cats rise to success, many have been curious as to what kind of music the star releases. Many believe Doja should be called a rapper, others say her style is more Pop or Hip-Hop. While Wale praised her for being one of the best female rappers, Remy Ma doesn’t seem to agree.

According to an interview with Elle Magazine, The “Get Into It” artist considers herself Hip-Hop at heart. Someone who was raised listening to 90’s legends such as Busta Rhymes and Lauryn Hill, Doja says, “I’ve rapped since the beginning, and I really couldn’t even sing that well to begin with—I got a lot better,” she states. “I use my voice as a tool to create these worlds, and it’s fine if people think that I can’t rap.”

Doja Cat faces criticism all the time will continue to face competition in the Best Female Hip-Hop Artist category at the BET Awards as Cardi B, Latto, Megan Thee Stallion, Nicki Minaj, and Saweetie are all nominated as well. She also recently announced her new music video arriving this week! Check out a clip of “Vegas” (From the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ELVIS) below, which drops Friday, June 3rd.
