Viola Davis Achieves The EGOT Status

After tonight Viola Davis has become the third black woman ever to have all four prestigious awards to her name.

A Night At The Grammys

Earlier this afternoon, the 65th annual Grammy awards kicked off. Some standout winners so far include Beyonce, Steve Lacy, and Tems.

However, no one’s star is shining brighter tonight than Viola Davis. Viola had a jam-packed 2022, including the critically acclaimed “The Woman King,” “The First Lady,” and “Black Adam,” just to name a few. Now she can start 2023 off with a massive, career-changing feat.

The 57-year-old actress took home her first Grammy tonight for her audiobook memoir “Finding Me.”

During her emotional speech, Davis acknowledged her outstanding achievement with all the excitement it deserves. The audiobook earned her an award for the best audiobook, narration, and storytelling recording. Davis was one of two black women who made history tonight, with Beyonce becoming the most-awarded artist in Grammy history.

“It has just been such a journey,” she said onstage. “I just EGOT!”

A Big EGOT

An ‘EGOT’ refers to an entertainer that’s won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. It’s considered one of the highest-regarded accomplishments a celeb can receive. Viola Davis is a part of history tonight, becoming the third black woman to gain EGOT status behind Whoopi Goldberg and Jennifer Hudson. It’s certainly a rare bragging right, with only 18 actors in that category. Before tonight, the “Suicide Squad” actress already had two Tonys, an Emmy, and an Oscar. She earned those honors for the stage production of “Fences,” “King Hedley II,” ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder,” and the film “Fences,” respectively.

“I wrote this book to honor the 6-year-old Viola, to honor her, to honor her life, her joy, her trauma, her everything,” Viola also said upon receiving her Grammy.

Coincidentally, Davis just recently spoke on her desire for the EGOT label during an interview with the recording academy last month.

“A lot of people haven’t found that thing that they’re passionate about, that they can do. Some have,” Davis said. “But we all are looking for that, blowing a hole through this earth before we leave it. I think about that in my work a lot. I really found that thing that I love to do. So I always wanna make it meaningful.”

Lizzo Releases Her Highly Anticipated Album Special

Lizzo is back and has released her highly-anticipated fourth studio album, “Special,” via AtlanticThe 12-track LP includes her chart-topping song “About Damn Time” and “Special,” which she performed on SNL last month. It also has some production from Terrace Martin, Mark Ronson, Ricky Reed, Benny Blanco, Max Martin, and Rick Rubin. In an interview with Zane Lowe, she also reflects on the album’s theme; self-love.

“[The album] is a celebration of who I am right now. It is in the present.” She also spoke with Variety, saying that the album is “one of the most musically badass, daring and sophisticated bodies of work I’ve done to date… I hope that it is some of the most useful pieces of music to ever exist. All I want to do is help people through my music.”

“Special” follows Lizzo’s third studio effort, “Cuz I Love You.” The record made Lizzo a household name with her chart-breaking song “Truth Hurts.” The song was number one on the Billboard 200 for seven consecutive weeks, tying with Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy,” featuring Charli XCX as the longest top-charting rap song by a female artist. The record also earned her her first Grammy award, winning Best Urban Contemporary Album in 2020.

Lizzo will be then hitting the road this summer in North America to support her new album. The Special Tour will kick off in Sunrise, Florida, on September 23.

Other stops include New York, Atlanta, Houston, Salt Lake City, and Portland. Latto will also serve as the opener for all of the dates. Tickets are on sale now.

Along with the release of “Special,” Lizzo also earned her first Emmy nomination this week. Her Amazon series “Watch Out for the Big Grrrls” earned a nomination for the Outstanding Competition Program. “We didn’t do this for awards, we did this for ourselves,” Lizzo wrote on Instagram following the announcement. “For the lives we touched making this… To shake up the industry.. and show the world how BEAUTIFUL AND TALENTED WE AREEEEE…YOU BETTA WATCH OUT!”

Emmy Awards Recap: ‘Ted Lasso’ and ‘The Crown’ Make History

Last night’s Emmys award ceremony was swept by British shows. Ted Lasso was the most surprising winner of the night taking home four Emmys and leading all comedies with 20 nominations. The hit show is a product of Apple TV’s network. This story brought light to a time as negativity wrapped in sickness surrounds the world.

Ted Lasso is led by Jason Sudeikis, a household name after starring in films such as Horrible Bosses, We’re the Millers and Hall Pass. Sudeikis finally received his flowers as a football coach who moves to London to coach a professional soccer team in the English Premier League. Lasso brought in awards for best lead actor (Sudeikis), outstanding comedy series, supporting actress (Hannah Waddingham), and supporting actor (Brett Goldstein).

The Crown brought in 24 nominees which tied with Disney+’s The Mandalorian for most-nominated drama series. The series is led by Olivia Colman, who you may know from Peep Show and Hot Fuzz. Colman, alongside Josh O’Conner, who has played in numerous supporting roles throughout the last decade of his career, stole the show last night at the Emmys.

Last night’s fans were rooting for some nominees to make history, shows like Marvel’s WandaVision. It would have been interesting to see the comic book giant take home an illustrious award for not just special effects, but great storytelling on the small screen.

HBO’s Lovecraft Country was another Emmy miss we wanted to break barriers especially with the recent passing of Legendary Actor Michael K. Williams.

Who do you think got snubbed last night, also what do you think of last night’s winners? Let us know in the comments.

50 Cent Thanks NAACP After “Power Book II: Ghost” Wins Multiple Image Awards

50 cent is more than just a rapper. 50 Cent is an entrepreneur. A businessman who always explored other options besides rap. Since ‘Power’ has come to an end, that has not stopped the rapper from branching off into other things. ‘Power Book II: Ghost’ is the latest project from the rapper, and despite not having receiving mainstream award nominations, it is an incredible show.

Not to mention, the show has recently won three NAACP Image Awards. One for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (Mary J Blidge), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (Clifford Smith, known as Method Man of Wu-Tang), and Outstanding Drama Series. 50 Cent took to Instagram to show appreciation for the NAACP and paying his respects. “I’d like to thank the NAACP for recognizing the work of the cast and crew of Ghost: Michael Rainey, Mary J. Blige, Clifford Smith better known as “M-E-T-H-O-D Man.” We are excited that the fans are continuing to support the Power universe.”

Again, this is not the first time 50 Cent has spoken positively on the award show. When ‘Power’ was going through its final season, 50 Cent not only showed gratitude but also blasted other award shows. 50 Cent believed there was a racial element that played a part in the lacking of Emmy nominations. Despite ‘Power’, as the highest ‘Starz’ top-rated series, still no nominations. And I agree.

In light of the ‘Game of Thrones’ racking up 32 nominations at the time and ‘Power’, receiving zero nominations is weird. In comparison, both shows are unique on their own. With one show being predominantly ‘White’ and the other ‘Black’, you have to ask the question. Is race involved? Power is no longer on TV, but Power Book II: Ghost, did not receive any Emmy nominations this year.

In conclusion, this is important why there are award shows like BET and NAACP. We need awards shows that cater to our own, whereas others do not appreciate our work.
