Hip-Hop Therapy Program Transforming Lives Behind Bars

In the heart of Metro East juvenile detention center, a remarkable hip-hop therapy program is taking shape. Harnessing the power of music to rehabilitate young inmates and reshape their lives. Backed by famous music producer Tyrus Armour. This groundbreaking initiative is making waves in the realm of juvenile justice. As Armour puts it, “In here, they are creating art; they are artists.”

How Hip-Hop Therapy Is Bringing Light Into The Dark

St. Clair County Juvenile Detention Center, in addition to the East St. Louis School District, have come together. They work to create the music therapy program. This goes beyond traditional rehabilitation methods. By engaging incarcerated youths through their love of music, the program aims to unlock their creative potential and help personal growth.

“You’d be surprised how much these kids open up when they’re allowed the space to do it in the way they like to open up,” says Armour. Emphasizing the importance of providing a nurturing environment for self-expression. The hip-hop music therapy program offers inmates not only the privilege of studio sessions based on good behavior. Also, they take music and business education classes. In addition, inmates participate in consultations with a social worker to address the challenges they face.

Above all, the results speak for themselves. Of the approximately 20 youths who have participated in the program over the past two years, only one has reoffended. “You can’t incarcerate people and not give them anything and expect them to change,” juvenile Officer Darla Canady says. As well as highlighting the need for new and creative methods in the justice system.

The collaboration between East St. Louis School District 189 and St. Clair County Juvenile Detention Center is part of the Wrap-Around-Wellness program. A comprehensive initiative addressing the trauma experienced by our youth. Through the combined efforts of counselors, psychologists, teachers, and law officers. The hip-hop therapy program operates on a $1.4 million state grant for violence prevention. Altogether, this money goes towards providing the necessary resources for transformation.

In the studio, the inmates immerse themselves in the creative process. Beyond honing their musical talents, they delve into music publishing, copyright law, as well as song structure, and industry news. In the unrecorded freestyle sessions, they release anger and find solace in their shared experiences. Which include moments of lighthearted humor about past transgressions.

However, it is during the recorded sessions that the true power of this therapy unfolds. Encouraged to express their emotions, including grief, violence, poverty, and domestic issues. The inmates learn to open up about their personal struggles. “I release it all in the music,” confides a 15-year-old girl, currently facing serious felony charges. Her tumultuous journey, marked by homelessness, drug experimentation, and exposure to pervasive gun violence, has shaped her perspective.

Despite her troubled past, she maintains her goals of becoming an artist and entrepreneur. Her newfound goals reflect an extreme transformation, steering clear of the criminal justice system. Guiding her, along with other inmates, toward alternate paths is the invaluable work of social worker Chea Wyatt. Who collaborates with Armour by visiting the studio to engage with the youths during recording sessions.

The hip-hop Therapy program at Metro East juvenile detention center has become a beacon of hope. Illustrating the potential of music as a way for change. By fostering creativity, self-reflection, and the development of life skills, this groundbreaking program is molding young lives. As well as providing them with the tools to build a brighter future. As the powerful beats reverberate through the walls of the detention center, so does the promise of redemption and the possibility of transformation.

Red Bull 1520 Red Bull Spiral Drops Another One

A month ago, Red Bull kicked off the newest hip-hop offering on its Red Bull 1520 platform, a space dedicated to lovers of hip-hop. In the first episode, Coast Contra broke it down on Red Bull Spiral. This week Red Bull Spiral is back with new and exciting artists, KenTheMan, Baby Tate, and Kalan.FrFr. It’s a fight to the finish as the performers come fully prepared to demonstrate what they are working with.

 Free Style

Red Bull Spiral is the latest outlet for hip-hop heads’ listening pleasure. Artists are flown out to Red Bull’s LA Studio and given the opportunity to show their ability to deliver rapid-fire freestyle. And there is no let-up and no breaks. It is just ready, action, go. And this time, Ken the Man, Baby Tate, and Kalen.FrFr is center stage.

Red Bull Spiral Performer #1: KenTheMan

KenTheMan is a female emcee from Texas, credited as an artist who broke out in 2020.  As Preview notes,

“The release from her debut EP “4 da 304’s” upped her profile in a big way, soaring past 10 million streams on Spotify. “

KenTheMan is also known for her and Two Chainz collaborative work, “Rose Gold Stripper Pole.”

And just over a month ago, the up-and-comer earned quite an honor. She was chosen as one of nine emerging performers for the First on SoundCloud 2022 class. Positioning herself as one to watch, she comes to deliver a little something for the people on the most recent episode of Red Bull Spiral.

Red Bull Spiral Performer #2: Baby Tate

Baby Tate, who also comes in as one of the freestyle contenders on Red Bull Spiral, is another rising Female Emcee. Lyricism runs like blood through Baby Tate’s veins, as Tate is the offspring of Dionne Farris, a Grammy-nominated songwriter. However, it’s not just raw talent that undergirds Tate’s ambition. The Georgia native has taken the time to fine-tune her abilities. As Billboard notes, even in her earlier years,

“She explored classical music, experimented with sound independently, and sharpened her songwriting and production skills.”

Since those earlier years, her craft has continued to blossom. In 2021 Tate signed with a major record label. And one of her tremendous boasts is, as Billboard continues , her collaborative work with J. Cole on Dreamville’s “Revenge of the Dreamers III. “For those unfamiliar, tune in to see Baby Tate step up to the mic giving fans a taste of her talent.

Red Bull Spiral Performer #3 Kalen.FfFr

Kalan brings his skill straight from California, his native soil. Like his compadres on the Red Bull stage Kalen, too, has been nurturing his gift for years, beginning earnestly in his teenage years. Kalen continued to pour into that passion throughout high school and college. In 2016, after graduating, Kalen released “Bandz” and “21”.

But it wasn’t until 2021 that he began solidifying his presence with the release of the project “Twofr 2.” According to AllMusic, Roc Nation picked him up as an artist on its label that same year. 2021 was a massive year for Kalan as he also launched his breakout tour. Now Kalen is showing listeners exactly how he unleashes his raw inner beast on the Red Bull Spiral platform.

In Closing

The newest episode of Red Bull Spiral dropped on April 5th. And it’s a sweet drop that fans of freestyle want to be sure to check out, Most amazingly, it only takes four minutes to catch up on the non-stop flow.

Meek Mill Remix’s Ice Spice’s Munch- Turns Song Into His Own Freestyle

Meek Mill is definitely feeling Ice Spice’s new hot single, “Munch (Feelin’ You).” Recently, the artist shared a clip on Instagram where he remixed the rising drill track.

On Saturday, October 29th, Meek took to his Instagram story to show some love for Ice’s song. In the video, Meek seems to be boarded on an airplane where he reveals his new freestyle remix to “Munch.” The rapper also posted a picture of himself on stage captioned with lyrics from the remix, “That money I gave you wasn’t even enough.”

https://twitter.com/HipHopDX/status/1586834158105481216?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1586834158105481216%7Ctwgr%5Ec1597926374803586de9a53d711222e69a995700%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fhiphopdx.com%2Fnews%2Fmeek-mill-ice-spice-munch-freestyle

Meek isn’t the first rapper to freestyle over “Munch!”

Meek Mill is the most recent rapper to preview a remix over Ice Spices new track. However, he is not the only artist to cover the popular drill song. Back in September, Symba dropped his version of “Much” where he seemed to be taking a jab at some of the women in his circle. Just a few weeks ago, Cardi B also teased a small “Munch” verse, although she said she wont be dropping an official remix.

Fans chime in with their opinions on Meeks Version of Munch!

Fans on Twitter are not taking this remix seriously as one user asked if this was a joke. Another stated that Meeks remix to “Munch” is one of the funniest things he’s heard in a minute, while a different fan said the remix goes hard on mute.

Meek Mill talks music and money!

On October 1st of 2021, Meek dropped his album, Expensive Pain. On the first anniversary of the album, the artist took time to reflect his money in the game. He said, “1 year Anniversary to the last album. Idk how money I made off it or had no control over the overall plan and I only made 13% off it lol.” He continues to add that he going to make 10 million or more off every album he decides to drop. The “Going Bad” rapper explains, “I was caught up in that slave sh!t that’s why I been taking long.” Meek wrote that everything he does flames, and that they don’t promote music with morals in the system.

2022 XXL Freshman Cypher: The Top Freestyles

It’s that time of year again. The XXL Freshman cypher has hit the streets

Twelve upcoming rappers take on an annual killer beat to showcase their skills. Some rose to the occasion as others also fell short. Let’s see who goes crazy in the 2022 XXL Freshman cypher.

2022 XXL Freshman List
2022 XXL Freshman logo/ credit- Travis Shinn for XXL

The XXL Freshman Cypher

The 12 XXL freshmen split into four groups. Cochise, BabyTron, Babyface Ray and Kali team up. Cypher Nardo Wick, Big30, Big Scarr, and KenTheMan also joined together. SoFaygo, Doechii, KayCyy, and Saucy Santana band together.

Each group freestyles over a different beat created by producer Wheezy Outta Here. If you don’t know, Wheezy is a Grammy award winner. He has also worked with Ye, Drake, Lil Uzi Vert, and Future to create top-selling hits.

This opportunity is perfect for each XXL Freshman to flex their rap muscles. Getting to rap on a beat created by Wheezy Outta Here is also a come-up. Some took full advantage of this opportunity and then went.

XXL Freshman Who Stood Out

BabyTron stood out by rapping without a beat, leaving no room for mistakes. Those listening are tuned in to every syllable a rapper utters. Tron also held his own with no instrumental.

Doechii decided to step outside the box during her freestyle. Her unique rap scheme is also hard to ignore. Everything Doechii said then was clear and precise. Nothing was left for the audience to guess. Doechii did not waste one line.

Saucy Santana came to the cypher with one thing on his mind. He came to spit some bars. Santana held nothing back in his freestyle as he was always repping his pride. Nothing was going to stop him from stepping up to the plate.

The Best Freshman Freestyle

KenTheMan also had the best XXL Freshman freestyle. From start to finish, she left little room for improvement. Her bars also remained witty throughout. KenTheMan then continued to raise the bar with each punchline.

“I’m a P, I got some h**s that’s ducked off in the valley/Ask about me, I been 100, my card super valid/I drop a ho, I get another one like DJ Khaled….Saying they don’t like me, liking pictures that’s a contradiction/F**king broke ni**as, getting pregnant, that’s just superstitious…”- KenTheMan

New JID Freestyle “29” Released Ahead Of “The Forever Story” Album Drop

JID, the Dreamville and Interscope artist, released his new freestyle 29 on June 13. In response, fans went crazy over the rapper’s flow, lyrics, and style.

The rapper and also a member of Spillage Village and hip hop group Zoink Gang first appeared on the scene in 2012. He then released several independent projects like “Route of Evil,” “Para Tu,” and “DiCaprio.”

In 2017, JID’s premiere studio album “The Never Ending Story” was released.

In 2018 “DiCaprio 2” came out and included a song with J. Cole. JID received acclamations from critics and fans alike.

In January 2021, JID announced that the third studio album titled “The Forever Story” was in the works.

On January 14, 2022, fans finally got a peek into the new album. Because of the first single release. But there hasn’t been much activity with the project since. Until recently.

JID Freestyle “29” And Album Release

JID went on Twitter on June 13 saying “it might be a lot to digest but it’s fresh, unmatched this time around.” He was referring to the new freestyle and video he released that night.

Immediately, fans took to Twitter and YouTube, expressing their support and excitement for his new music in the comments. “You in ya own lane,” “JID bouta drop some absolute heat,” and “this man’s flow is one of a kind.

The evolution of JID’s sound, bars, and lyrics is undeniable. However, the artist does not receive the recognition he deserves. His beats seem to be getting more complex, but the rapper continues to flow over them effortlessly. Even over an instrumental, that seems to be “wonky,” this new JID freestyle is fire. And fans are anxiously awaiting “The Forever Story” drop.

Brandy aka B-Rocka Unleashes On Jack Harlow

Brandy versus Jack Harlow is something that can only exist in a pandemic world. Two very unlikely foes are taking light jabs at one another. This non-aggressive feud started after Harlow admitted to not knowing that Ray J and Brandy were related. Now, the unlikely versus has Brandy taking shots at Jack Harlow over his revised version of “First Class”. B-Rocka is back.

Brandy Revives B-Rocka

The “I Wanna Be Down” decides to reintroduce the world to her alter rapping persona, B-Rocka. Brandy freestyles over Jack Harlow’s “First Class” that’s samples Fergie’s hit song.

“Allow me to reintroduce myself/ My name is world famous, one of the greatest / Living legend, did I mention my résumé is amazing?/ The game need a breath of fresh air and I’m breath taking”- B-Rocka freestyle

B-Rocka makes it clear that she is a living legend. Brandy has appeared on tv shows and movies; Moesha, The Parkers, The Game, STAR, Queens, Cinderella, and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. “Forty-three and feeling like a kid with millions watching/ Popular but now I’m popping sh*t for those out of pocket…”-B-Rocka freestyle

Not afraid to mention her age, Brandy aka B-Rocka, showcases her longevity in the entertainment industry. Jack Harlow has been in the game for only a fraction of the time. Also, Brandy let’s everyone know that if you are out of pocket she will check you. In the eyes of Brandy, Jack is out of pocket.

“This black excellence at its finest/ Don’t call me, ‘Brandy,’ no more, call me, ‘Your highness’/ Built tougher than my brothers Ray J glasses…”-B-Rocka freestyle

Brandy is what black excellence looks like and her accomplishments have racked up to the sky. She is still relevant and that will continue as long as she decides. Brandy  has earned the right to be called a Queen and the Queen has spoken.

Finally, B-Rocka addresses Ray J being her brother. The line adds humor to the freestyle. She mentions how she is tougher than Ray J’ s sunglasses. Fans enjoyed this line by Brandy.

It’s unclear how long this light-hearted  feud will last. Currently, it’s just fun and games between Brandy and Jack Harlow but others can increase tensions on both sides. Others have already added their opinion and it has not been positive. But, the feud should remain peaceful.

DaBaby… Freestyle of the Year?

Less than 24 hours after an altercation at a Los Angeles bowling alley with DaniLeigh’s brother, DaBaby delivers a fast paced, subliminal heavy freestyle on Los Angeles Leakers.

Not allowing Gunna’s “Pushin P” instrumental one second to build, DaBaby immediately begins the freestyle with great energy — rapping:

“Off the top don’t believe the hype, n***a it’s Baby and I’m pushing P”

DaBaby’s Freestyles On Danileigh

Within a few bars, DaBaby doesn’t hesitate to subliminally freestyle on the DaniLeigh debacle:

“Yeah, I won’t keep her. I rather be free with her, give her back to streets, keep it G with her, might f**k with me for three years, only three times when I sit down in public and eat with her”

“N***a I don’t want it no more, I don’t want the whips neither, trying to make me mad about a h*e, n***a don’t know what’s going on, I don’t want the b***h either, I’ll drop her off with you, you can keep her, n***a I ain’t new to this s**t, I’m true to this s**t, since a 745-yellow beamer.”

Justin Incredible and DJ SourMilk appeared easily impressed by Dababy’s freestyle. Both were all smiles and compliments.

One Last Shot

DaBaby didn’t stop there as it seemed; he sent a message to DaniLeigh’s brother, Brandon Bills. Billion Dollar Baby raps:

“I’m back to Cali, and I never run, play, and you gonna play with Tupac and Biggie.”

DaBaby is not new to controversy as 2021 was full of it, but it seems the “Tupac” rapper is not shying away from it this year.

Check out DaBaby’s LA Leakers freestyle and let us know if you think this is the best freestyle as of yet:

The instrumentals Sean worked with were Drake’s “Love All” & Kanye’s “Hurricane.”

Lupe Fiasco Drops Song “Big Energy”, Celebrates “Food & Liquor” Gold Status

Last month, Lupe Fiasco announced that his new album, untitled at this time, is “my Illmatic“. As fans still wait for a release date, the man has been to work.

In August, Lupe put out “Teach A Man To Fish”, a fresh freestyle that came to the heels of a summer of freestyle work. Earlier this month he released a brand-new freestyle “Diet Soda Poetry”, a flip of Drake’s “Champagne Poetry”. Now, he’s released an original track that comes to us courtesy of the SHOWTIME documentary The One and Only Dick Gregory.

Lupe and Mr Gregory

For those unaware, Dick Gregory was a ground-breaking 1960s comedian and civil rights activist. Throughout the turbulent times of the 60s-70s, Gregory was at the forefront of political activism and rebellious comedy.

Gregory led hunger strikes against the US involvement in Vietnam and was banned from performing at the University of Tennessee. The man is an absolutely fascinating historical character.

Lupe Fiasco certainly paid homage to the man. Appearing on the soundtrack to the documentary, “Big Energy” covers Dick Gregory’s life and times, taking us from milestone to milestone.

Lupe recounts his life:

“Born in St. Louis, moved to Illinois to school/Then came up to Chicago for professional college pursuings/Told jokes in the army, not your average Amish mami.”

“In the 1960s is when he really was in his prime/Had a brick layin’ in Playboy, even ended up in Times/Wrote n-gger in ’64 and then wrote many more/Extending proficiency to flip obscenity to lore.”

“…his life was quite fascinating/From the rare hostage crisis to Kennedy assassination/He was there, present and probably every affair/From Selma to telling Kentucky Fried treat their chickens with care.”

A diet of Gold

But celebrating Gregory’s life isn’t the only celebration Lupe’s doing. Last Wednesday (September 22), Lupe announced that his debut LP Food & Liquor has finally been certified Gold. Released in 2006, the album has passed the 500,000 copies-sold milestones.

Lupe took to Instagram to celebrate, thanking his fans and enemies alike. Whether they “stayed down like an elephant chest” or “tried to harm the name”, Lupe says “#TheMarathonContinues”. Food & Liquor, 15 years-old last Sunday, is the jewel in Lupe Fiasco’s crown. Indeed, the album debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 and took three Grammy nominations. Among these were Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song (“Kick, Push”), and Best Solo Rap Performance. In 2008, Lupe won Best Urban/Alternative Song for “Daydreamin” at the 50th Grammys.

Fans and artists alike toasted to Lupe and Food & Liquor‘s legacy, among them Tyler, the Creator and ScHoolboy Q.
