The Implications For Free Expression Following B.G.’s Recent Legal Challenges

PEN America is sounding the alarm over a federal judge’s order against B.G. The organization reports that the artist is being ordered to hand over his rap lyrics, an action seen as an attempt to subvert the First Amendment rights of an artist.

Rap Community and Use Of Lyrics in Cases

The rap community has been constantly fighting to prevent using rap lyrics as evidence in court. In 2022, several hip-hop artists signed a petition to end this practice. Unfortunately, the battle continues.

According to ABC, in 2023, in the criminal proceedings against Young Thug, a judge ruled that lyrics could be used. However, the use was subject to certain conditions. So, it’s no surprise that things continue in this fashion.

Legal Challenges For B.G.

In 2012, B.G. was convicted and sentenced for felony weapon possession and witness tampering. In 2023, the artist was released. Sadly, in March of this year, he was again facing legal trouble.

According to Rolling Stone, the performer was taken into custody for parole violations. The parole officer identified two reasons for the arrest. First, B.G. did not receive permission to perform. Furthermore, Boosie’s felony conviction prohibits B.G. from performing alongside him. As the publication continues,  the duo’s appearance together violated a federally supervised release statute prohibiting parolees from associating with other felons unless necessary.

Examining The Terms Of Parole

Is this fair? According to MSN, Judge Morgan, the presiding judge in the original trial, rejected the prosecution’s plea. In terms of B.G.’s sentencing and future release, the prosecution requested that the artist refrain from promoting music glorifying gun violence or murder. However, despite striking down the request, a compromise was reached. As MSN notes,

“The compromise required Dorsey to submit copies of all future songs prior to production or promotion.”

And thus, given these conditions, the current judge’s request complies with his release conditions.

Parole Officer Has More Concerns

So, what exactly underlines the parole officers’ additional concerns? According to reports, the parole officer was also concerned about an album Dorsey and Gucci Mane collaborated on. The primary rationale is that these artists share felony status. Again, this is in violation.

PEN America: A Voice For The People

What is PEN America’s role in this? PEN America takes pride in advocating for individuals and the free expression of their voices. According to the organization,

“PEN America works tirelessly to defend free expression, assist persecuted writers, and promote literary culture.”

PEN America’s Concerns

In light of the recent ruling against Dorsey, the organization has spoken out, raising concerns about the decision’s implications. According to a representative from the organization,

“This arrest is another example of the criminal justice system suppressing freedom of expression and preventing artists with felony convictions from continuing their passions.”

This highlights a crucial issue that requires immediate attention.

Gucci Mane Expresses Regret For Name Dropping Jeezy’s Dead Friend

Gucci Mane and Jeezy’s feud has raised a wave of emotion from both sides over the years. The long-awaited Verzuz battle between the considerably elite trap stars set the stage for a moment that is now regretful on Gucci Mane’s part. Guwop set the record straight during a sit down with Rap Radar Live during the 2022 Revolt Summit. He provided clarification on the infamous moment he spoke on Jeezy’s deceased friend, Henry “Pookie Loc” Clark during their Verzuz battle.

While it was immediately interpreted as a personal dig at Jeezy, Gucci combats these ideals by saying, “I didn’t know when i got on stage that was gonna happen. I didn’t go up there thinkin like you know, I’m bringing negative energy.”

The Verzuz Battle

This particular battle was a defining moment for any trap music lover as the crowd watched the two hit the stage. The battle went off without a hitch as the anticipation was high, yet there was hope that the feud wouldn’t erupt as tensions rose.

The defining moment came when Gucci Mane played his diss track to Jeezy, “The Truth.” Putting salt on the wound, Gucci says, “Damn! Put that n***a’s a** in the dirt. Smoking on Pookie Loc tonight,” Gucci exclaimed.

The track was released in 2012 at the height of both rappers careers and with the mention of Jeezy’s late friend, “Pookie Loc.”

Jeezy speaks on the Verzuz battle

Jeezy spoke with Ebro of Hot 97 the day after the battle and addressed the moment that left many speechless. He let on that he wasn’t expecting Gucci to play the song, but he knew it was a possibility. “I didn’t feel that in the air,” he said.

“I’m not about to let a situation take me back 20 years because somebody’s antagonizing me. I’m not doing that.”

While the “Thug Motivation” rapper showcased a calm demeanor, it appeared he had more going through his mind than everyone could see.

Watch the Hot 97 interview below.

Gucci Mane: Stop “Dissin The Dead”

Gucci Mane has clearly been apologetic and regretful for some time now as he dropped single, “Dissing The Dead” just months ago. In the song, he raps,

“I’m the one put your boy name on a stone. I dissed the dead and I knew it was wrong.”

The sympathetic steamboat didn’t take too long to come around as his diss track with Lil Durk, “Rumors” still rang fresh. Pookie Loc, Jeezy’s deceased friend, made another cameo as Gucci mentioned him yet again. Much like Jeezy, there seems to be growth in the area of change once children and family enter the picture.

Gucci is fresh off a baby high as he and wife Keyshia Ka’oir are expecting their second child together. One thing is for certain, fans aren’t opposed to hearing the “So Icy” duo on another track together.

Cardi B Shows Off New Ink On Her Face

Cardi B just got some new ink, and she’s been showing it off to the world. The Bronx artist revealed her fresh tattoos via Instagram Live. She tatted the names of her children, Kulture and Wave, on her face. Cardi has her son, Wave, on the side of of it in red ink. Kulture’s name is tattooed on her arm in a similar fashion.  It’s funny because last year the 29-year-old rapper was grateful that she never got a face tattoo as a teenager. Then, earlier this year, she hinted at getting a face tattoo on Twitter.  I guess the birth of her son changed her mind. Tattoo artist, Robinson De Los Santos did the work.

https://twitter.com/cardibupdateshq/status/1568672015594266624?s=46&t=1z8nej0sRtoI5U8ePJtNzQ

Cardi Loves Tattoos

As we all know, Cardi is no stranger to getting tattoos. She has a name tattoo of her husband, Offset, on the back of her thigh.  She also has a name tattoo of her sister, Hennessey, on her bicep.  These are just some of the many tattoos she has.  In hip-hop, tattoos on faces are a thing and have been for a while.  From Gucci Mane and Lil Wayne to Lil Uzi Vert and Trippie Redd many artists have tattoos on their face. Drake has even joined the club. Celebrity tattoo artist Noah Lee did the honors.  Just like Cardi, the 6 God honored someone near and dear to him. He got the initials “s.g” under his eye in red ink as well.  S.G. stands for Sandra Graham, who is his mother.

Trendsetter

Cardi B is a trendsetter, so I expect more women to follow suit in getting their faces tatted.  She also may make Duck nails a thing again.  The nails started trending on TikTok again recently and Cardi B has been involved.  Last week, the Grammy winning artist took to Instagram to show off her new nails.  She displayed French tips with cherry decals and red gems.  Also called “Jersey nails,” Cardi has elevated the craze of Duck nails.  We will be seeing Duck nails and face tattoos everywhere now.

Gucci Mane and Keyshia Ka’oir Expecting Second Child Together

Veteran rapper Gucci Mane and his wife Keyshia Ka’oir announced that they’re expecting.

The couple announced the exciting news via Instagram. The bun in the oven will be their second child, as they have one-year-old, Ice Davis.

“Let’s Have Another Baby ICE Needs Somebody To Play With,” Keyshia wrote on Sep 9. Her post’s caption was about Gucci Mane’s song, “Mrs. Davis,” also dedicated to Keyshia Ka’oir. The song was released on Jun 3.

Gucci’s Parenthood

Gucci opened up about what it felt like being a father again after Ice was born.

“It’s a great thing, and I love it, but it’s definitely challenging to be a parent,” he said. “I always want my music to talk about what was going on in my life. The most important thing in my life now is my son.”

The Atlanta rapper has been busy living his best life and promoting his artist’s music.  Last month he released his latest song, “Dissin’ the Dead,” which went viral due to its lyrical content. In it, he warns rappers to stop dissing dead people and talks about the consequences it comes with.

As previously reported by FM Hip Hop, Gucci “[expressed] his regret over popularizing the trend of disrespecting fallen enemies. He also calls for the young generation to follow his lead. A visual crafted by Omar, the Director, accompanies the song. In it, Gucci Mane posts up in a cemetery while wearing hoodies commemorating Trouble and Young Dolph.

Coincidentally, the track dropped on Wednesday, which would’ve been Dolph’s 37th birthday…Gucci Mane isn’t the only rapper to change his stance on disrespecting the dead. Last year, Lil Durk promised to stop the practice after the deluxe release of The Voice. Florida rapper Julio Foolio followed not long after, calling it ‘childish.'”

As of now, he is the only suspect.  According to Rockdale County Sheriff Eric J. Levett, it was Jones’s mother who suggested he turn himself in.

“The mother turned the son onto one of my sergeants, who began to talk to him and convince Mr. Jones to turn himself in.  His mother was a huge resource in helping us apprehend him”.

In other words, the Sheriff’s department should be thanking his mother.  Jones agreed to turn himself in and had deputies apprehend him near Southern Regional Medical Center in Clayton County.  Therefore, his charges include home invasion, felony murder, battery, and aggravated assault. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the children, loved ones, and fans of Trouble.  A true voice for his city and an inspiration to the community he proudly represented. RIP Skoob.” Def Jam Instagram statement.

He was most notably known for working with Drake on “Bring It Back” with Mike Will Made It.  In addition, he also worked with The Weeknd on “Come Thru”.  Many fans and artists took to social media to express their sadness.  First, T.I. posted on his Twitter.  Followed by Gucci Mand and Lil Duval.  Lastly, Boosie Badazz posted a heartfelt message to his friend.  The last album Trouble released was in 2020, “Thug Luv”, with star appearances from the City Girls, Quavo, and 2 Chainz.

After Gucci dropped his response song Publicity Stunt, Lil Durk reposted it on his Instagram story with the caption “Ahh haaaaaa” above it. Gucci Mane’s Diss Song At YoungBoy

After Boosie Badazz responded to YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Gucci Mane dropped his own diss track titled Publicity Stunt. He initially previewed the track with a tweeted a picture of himself with the caption “I feel like I’m Gucci Mane in 2006.” Fun fact, one of YoungBoy’s biggest hits, Make No Sense, uses the caption in a line where the Louisiana rapper compares himself to Gucci. However, the 1017 rapper uses YoungBoy’s line against him on this new track. In short, Gucci claims that his name was only mentioned in the I Hate YoungBoy song for attention & clout.

Gucci Mane & Lil Durk’s Song Rumors

The two rappers came together for the music video of their song Rumors. However, this song is what sparked YoungBoy to mention Gucci in his diss record at Lil Durk,

“Used to fuck with Gucci ’til I seen he like them pussy n*****.”

There have been many songs that have come out of the initial feud between Lil Durk & YoungBoy Never Broke Again.

Gucci Mane Strikes Back At NBA YoungBoy’s Diss Track

Gucci Mane has responded to NBA YoungBoy’ s diss track. He had made his own to comment on YoungBoy’ s feelings about him.

Last month, YoungBoy had released “I hate NBA YoungBoy”. The song is a diss track towards all of his enemies, including  Lil Durk, Lil Baby, 42 Dugg, Boosie Badazz, and Apple Music, as well as Gucci Mane. The diss on Mane is a reference to Mane and Lil Durk’s collab song, “Rumors”.

“Used to fuck with Gucci ’til I seen he like them pussy n-ggas.”

Mane has now responded with his own diss track, called “Publicity Stunt”. He hinted towards it last night with a picture and caption.  “I feel like I’m Gucci Mane in 2006” is a reference to YoungBoy’ s 2019 song “Make No Sense”. All of the yellow in the picture is a reference to Mane’s 2009 song, “Lemonade”. “Lemonade” is about the struggles of being rich.

Gucci Mane in 2006

The main thing incident mentioned of Gucci is from 2006 when murder charges dropped against him; due to insufficient evidence. Mane’s story is that someone was trying to rob him and he was forced to pull a gun in self-defense. YoungBoy saw that story only as Mane getting away with murder. However, what he took away from the story, and what his rival at the time, Young Jeezy, also took away is the importance of publicity.  Jeezy claimed at the time that Mane was just ” “trying to turn a bad situation into good publicity“.

“Publicity Stunt”

Mane’s song is about two things. The first thing is about NBA Youngboy. He wishes to understand why Youngboy flip-flops on his opinion about him before he comes to the realization that he is just doing it for publicity. The rest of the song is about publicity and knowing who to take shots at. The song ends with “I thought you felt like Gucci Mane in 2006” repeating in the outro.

Lil Wop Slams Gucci Mane After Publicly Outing Himself As Bisexual

Since he joined Gucci Mane’s 1017 roster a few years ago, Atlanta rapper Lil Wop hasn’t found much success. Gucci signed Pooh Shiesty, Foogiano, Enchanting, Big Scarr, and others before taking the artist off its roster. Lil Wop is pushing back against such allegations by telling his fans that he chose to leave.

Two weeks after publicly announcing his bisexuality in a belly-baring crop top photo on Instagram, Lil Wop returns to the conversation, calling Gucci Mane a “weirdo” on Twitter.

His remarks regarding his former label boss are surprising. Particularly since Wop also has an ice cream cone tattooed on his face, just like Gucci. In addition to their arrival, Lil Wop announces to his fans that he is a member of the LGBTQIA2+ community.

“I’m Bisexual I Like Guys & Girls,” said Wop before telling fans he wasn’t hacked.

An Overview Of ‘1017’: Lil Wop Former Record Label

“1017” comes from Gucci’s grandfather’s home in Bessemer, AL — 1017 First Avenue, to be precise. Below is a quote from Gucci describing his home.

“Rotating cast of family characters who could be staying there at any time” from The Autobiography of Gucci Mane.

Similarly, in the memoir, Wop discusses how Young Thug, PeeWee Longway, and Young Scooter hang out there as well. “The Brick Factory was some hippie commune shit. Outlaws playing by our own set of rules,” he says. “A tale of true American counterculture.”

Gucci’s cease-and-desist letter transformed into an invitation to star in their 2020 Gucci Cruise campaign. Which certainly marked the end of the “outlaw” era.  As a result of his release from prison in 2016, the 1017 Empire underwent a few rebrandings. In partnership with Alamo/Empire Music, he started 1017 Eskimo. Which housed artists such as Hoodrich Pablo Juan, Asian Doll, and Lil Wop. Now he has rebranded as 1017 Global Music aka the New 1017. Through a newly forged partnership with Atlantic Music, the streets of the South can now access the radio airwaves.
