Kevin Abstract Confirms BROCKHAMPTON Album Dropping This Year

BROCKHAMPTON will be back this year

Kevin Abstract has been very active recently. The BROCKHAMPTON frontman has been teasing that he will release a new solo album soon. He also just dropped a new single titled “SLUGGER“, featuring $NOT and Slowthai. Soon after, he let fans know on Twitter that his group will be returning with a new album before the end of 2021.

The new project will serve as BROCKHAMPTON’s second studio album of the year. Their previous album, Roadrunnner: New Light, New Machine, dropped in April with features from A$AP Rocky, JPEGMAFIA, Danny Brown, and more. It peaked at #11 on the Billboard 200.

They’re keeping their streak going

For the past four years, BROCKHAMPTON has not slowed down. Since 2017, they’ve released six studio albums, most notably the highly praised Saturation trilogy.

While they’ve been on a crazy run, it may be coming to an end. Shortly before the release of Roadrunner, Abstract tweeted that their next two albums will be their last. While not much is known about their next project, it very well could be BROCKHAMPTON’s finale.

Alongside the announcement, the self-proclaimed boy band just earned themselves a huge GQ feature.

Check out their video for “BUZZCUT”, featuring Danny Brown from earlier this year below.

Lena Waithe Partners with Def Jam to Start Record Label

Lena Waithe partners with Def Jam to launch Hillman Grad Records

Lena Waithe has always been a superfan of music. Her favorite era of music is the 90s, and she named Prince, Erykah Badu, and Brandy as icons that she looks up to. Her fandom of the style and energy of the 1990s specifically, R&B and rap, has led her to create her own record label.

The filmmaker has already made waves in terms of her movies and TV shows, unabashedly highlighting diversity amongst races and sexual orientations. One of the main things integral to any of her productions on screen is the music accompanying it. She acknowledges this in a Rolling Stone article she did for their 2021 Future of Music Issue.

“As I got older and more into my career, I think people really started to pick up on the music choices in the film or TV that I was doing, and that really spoke to me,”

A Different World

In partnership with Def Jam, Lena Waithe is creating her own record label called Hillman Grad Records. The name harkens back to the classic sitcom A Different World, a show about the experiences of young adults attending Hillman College. This show has had a significant impact on the culture of HBCUs nationwide, along with the Black community in general.

She also adds what her purpose of the label will be.

“I don’t want to do the typical thing. We are not going to come out with 10 albums a year. It’s about finding really interesting artists who have a real drive and sense of wanting to figure out who they are over time. We really want artists that can grow. Yes, it includes albums and singles, but to me it’s about personality and moments.”

Waithe shared that she finds it “important for artist storytelling to be brought back”. Waithe wants artists to take their time and grow along with their music.

She didn’t say specifically what artists she was going to sign, but she did say the type of artists they are looking for.

She states artists like Miguel, Jazmine Sullivan, and H.E.R are all doing something special and different.

“I think there is this desire to have artists do the same thing again and again. I really miss watching an artist and their albums shift and change with each one. But I want to bring back some of that old vibe and nostalgia and rollout of actual singles.”

She also emphasizes that mental health support needs to be a priority for her artists.

Who do you think would be a good fit for Hillman Grad Records?

JAY-Z Releases “Adnis” Video On TIDAL

On our previous episode of “What is JAY-Z Doing Now?”, Hova released the BAM video with reggae artist Damian Marley .  After that, the very controversial Kill JAY-Z” video.  Of course, both of them released and premiered on the mogul’s TIDAL stream site.  Well now the Hard Knock Life emcee is back with another visual masterpiece, one for his bonus track titled “Adnis“, named after his father and main focus point of the track.

We were originally introduced to the sneak peak of the track via an ad that ran during the NBA Finals back in June, according to XXL Magazine. What started off as a teaser for the audio of the bonus track, ended up as the actual music video.  This was the most highly anticipated and requested track, based on the Brooklynite’s fan base.  The video also was directed by Mark Romanek, who directed “The Story of OJ“.

The black and white vision involves  Moonlight actor Mahershala Ali and Lethal Weapon actor Danny Glover. Ali works the punching bag as a focused amateur boxer in a dark gym while Glover appears as his trainer in some of the scenes. Make sure to pay attention to the hidden messages between the visual and the narrated verses, as they embody each other.

In the song, Hov emphasizes his distant relationship with his late father, beginning his verse:

“Uh, letter to my dad that I never wrote/Speeches I prepared that I never spoke/Words on a paper that I never read/Proses never penned, they stayed in my head/Jotted on dotted lines, I’mma fight you, ni**a/From stories that I heard, I’m just like you, ni**a/Must’ve been some pain in your past, too/Must’ve been a karma that was past due/Must it be the energy that passed through/Many I’ve been a pastor, many snafus.”
