Sugar Hill Records Will Pay Its Artists Thanks To MC Sha Rock

Sugar Hill Records have finally paid their artists!  MC Sha Rock was the first to break the news. Sugar Hill is basically hip-hop.  The infamous song “Rapper’s Delight” was the first hip-hop song. It was released under Sugar Hill Records by The Sugarhill Gang in 1979.  Sugar Hill Records was home to The Crash Crew, Funky 4+1 More, and The Furious 5. MC Sha, the first female MC, worked hard for decades to make this happen.  She has been working on this case since the early 90s.

MC Sha Wins Case

At first, no one wanted to file a lawsuit against Sugar Hill Records, but MC Sha Rock found Artist Rights Enforcement. It’s an agency that fights for the rights of all artists and MC Sha was their first hip-hop client. Over 40 years since his debut, they won the case after many people urged MC Sha Rock to just let it go. The first female MC was determined to prove everyone wrong and get her fair justice. Artists that were under Sugar Hill will receive back royalties and from here on out, they will receive all publishing and writing monies.

The Message

Joe and Sylvia Robinson founded the Sugar Hill Records label in the 1970s.  The label was home to many hip-hop staple songs, “The Message,” a legendary song. Many say that this is one of the most important hip-hop songs ever.  In 2002, it was added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress, which is a first from the hip-hop culture. Melle Mel, Rahiem, Kidd Creole, and Scorpio, of the Furious Five, are responsible for this legendary hit.

In 2012, according to Rolling Stone magazine, “The Message” is the greatest hip-hop song of all time. According to the prestigious publication, “The Message” is the first song to let listeners in on what really goes on inside the hood across the United States.  You can tell “The Message” has a big impact hip-hop when you hear songs from artists like N.W.A., Jay-Z, and The Notorious B.I.G.  It’s crazy how one of the biggest hits ever comes from artists who did not want it at first. Good thing they changed their mind because now they’re hip-hop royalty.

Jewell, The First Lady of Death Row Passes Away

Jewell Caples passed away at the age of 54.  The R&B singer was known as “The First Lady of Death Row Records.”  She passed away early this morning after being in the hospital for nearly two months.  She was admitted to the hospital because of issues with fluid in her heart, legs, and lungs.

Jewell was signed under Death Row Records in the mid-90s, during the height of the record label.  She made songs with N.W.A., Tha Dogg Pound, and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony.

R.I.P. The First Lady

Before joining Death Row, she was signed to Ruthless Records alongside Dr. Dre.  When Dre left Ruthless, she did as well.  Jewell’s debut album never surfaced, but she was able to appear on songs with Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, and Nate Dogg.  She can be heard on “The Chronic” by Dr. Dre, “Doggystyle,” and “Murder Was the Case” by Snoop Dogg.

Many fans went to social media to share their thoughts.

“woah man…RIP Jewell. She graced so many classic Death Row joints. A beautiful voice and underrated ingredient in West Coast hip hop.  Peace to her family & loved ones.”

Co-founder The D.O.C. praised Snoop Dogg for buying Death Row Records.  He is proud of Snoop and all his accomplishments, especially this one.  He claims everywhere he goes, he sees Snoop, whether it be in the grocery store, on TV, or on billboards.  The D.O.C. also acknowledges Snoop’s ability to use hip hop as a tool to make a great living.  He feels Snoop can use himself as an example and show the youth there are many ways through hip hop to make a great living just like him.

Snoop’s Power Moves

He pulled all of Death Row’s catalog from streaming services.  On an episode of Drink Champs, Snoop explained why he did this.  He said those platforms don’t pay enough, and his plan is instead to create a Death Row app where all Death Row music can be found.

“Those platforms get millions and millions and millions of streams, and nobody gets paid other than the record labels.  So what I wanted to do is snatch my music off, create a platform….”

Largely known that low royalty rates are paid out by companies such as Apple Music and Spotify, Snoop wants to put the control back in the artist’s hands.

Ice Cube Changed The World 30 Years Ago

Tomorrow, April 30, marks 30 years since the brutal Rodney King beating at the hands of the Los Angeles Police Department.  Unfortunately, the officers involved were acquitted even though they were shown on video attacking Rodney King.  This resulted in an uprising in the streets of LA.  People lost their lives, and many were hurt. Unfortunately, this was the reality for black people in America, and Ice Cube decided to speak on it.

Cube is the Voice of the People

Only 22 years old, his album “Death Certificate” was atop of the charts with its message of trying to spread the truth about how we are treated in the United States.  Ice Cube was very outspoken and had views about the Rodney King case.

“If Rodney King was seen as good Black, then the officers would have been found guilty, but all through the trial, they kept saying that he was a monster…a wild animal…plus he had a past criminal record.  To the jurors, he was a bad Black, so anything done to him was justified”.

Conscious Rap

Before “Death Certificate,” Cube was a very conscious rapper in the infamous group N.W.A.  You could hear it in songs like “Fuck Tha Police,” “Express Yourself,” and “Straight Outta Compton.”  Not only Ice Cube, but Ice-T was part of this movement as well.  As the nation started to catch on to these songs, hip hop was more respected and acknowledged for discussing real events.  Some people still considered hip-hop “gangsta rap,” but the rappers didn’t feel that way.

“I don’t know which writer is the one that called it ‘gangsta rap’; I still call it reality rap…to me, it means a network of information,” said Ice Cube.

Ice T- called his songs “street level journalism,” while Eazy E compared N.W.A. to news reporters.  Snoop Dogg sides with Eazy E stating that his songs are better than the news because he really knows what’s going on and can deliver it to you.

As hip hop continues to evolve, more artists are outspoken.  Artists like J.Cole, Kendrick Lamar, and Joey Badass have taken the reigns from the likes of Ice Cube, Ice-T, and Snoop Dogg.  We need more artists to speak out since music is powerful.  Ice Cube and Ice-T helped hip-hop change the world!

Lil Eazy-E discusses his grief

In June 2020, Wright Jr explained in an interview why he didn’t shed a tear at his father’s funeral.

“I’ll let you know a little something of the funeral- I didn’t cry,” he confessed. “It was more shocking because you had these thousands of people around. It’s like, ‘Whoa, what’s going on?'”.

Wright also described how he didn’t have time to process his father’s death.

“It didn’t hit me until you get actually home and get your own privacy like, ‘Wow, my father’s gone’. He further elaborated, saying “I remember at Herman Memorial, hundreds of people were coming up to me and talking to me. You don’t have time to cry.”

The Growing Up Hip Hop personality also discussed how he has handled grief over the years, especially since having children of his own.

“I have kids, so I find the best place to cry is the shower,” Lil Eazy-E said. “You get in the shower, let the water hit your face and let it all out. If you come out looking a little red eyes, ‘Hey, I got soap in my eye.’ You just got to get away sometimes.”

The impact of Eazy-E

The initial Eazy-E Day was declared in 2008 by then mayor of Compton Omar Bradley, with his announcement saying, “Eric made Compton famous not just in California, but all over the world. I recognize Eazy as a young man who grew up in the streets of Compton- and brothers and sisters, we know it’s not ‘easy’ growing up in Compton.”

Though only 30 at the time of his death, Eazy-E made an unforgettable impact on hip-hop and music as a whole. He was a founding member of the rap group NWA, skyrocketing to fame when the group’s debut album Straight Outta Compton dropped in 1988. Three months later, Eazy-E released his debut solo album Eazy-Duz-It. He was also responsible for signing the Hip-Hop group Bone Thugs-n-Harmony to Ruthless Records in 1993.

Eazy-E passed away on March 26, 1995. He was buried two weeks later at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California.

Dr. Dre Served Divorce Papers at Grandmothers Funeral

The legendary Hip-Hop billionaire Dr. Dre’s battle with his estranged wife Nicole Young has escalated. The already ugly proceedings took an ugly turn as Dre was served with divorce papers at his grandmother’s funeral.

According to the report, Dre was standing next to his grandmother’s coffin. On the other hand, Nicole claims he was served in the cemetery parking lot. Dre was never in the parking lot, according to numerous staffers at the Inglewood Park Cemetery, who all corroborated the same thing: he pulled up on the roadway within the cemetery near his grandmother’s gravesite.

An Ugly Divorce Gets Uglier

Nicole Young’s lawyer expenses and the judge’s ultimate order of $1.5 million are also in the filings. Sources from TMZ claim that a little more than $300,000 has been paid at this time. However, Dre claims that the entire sum has been paid. According to Young, the remaining balance is $1,224,567.

In June 2020, Young filed for divorce from the legendary producer, stating infidelity with three distinct mistresses and having a child from one of the relationships that date back to 2013.

Dre was ordered to pay Young roughly $300,000 in spousal support each month by a judge in July. Unless the court determines differently, the former NWA member will have to maintain paying his ex until she remarries or enters into a domestic partnership.

The estranged couple, who have a son, Truice, 24, and a daughter, Truly, 20, have been unable to reach an agreement on how to divide Dre’s estimated $800 million fortune.

According to DJ Battlecat’s recent Instagram post, the Beats By Dre CEO will soon release his highly awaited solo album. It will be his first album since 2015’s “Compton”.
