The FMHip Hop Review: Young Thug’s ‘Punk’

Young Thug’s Punk is possibly the most anticipated album of 2021.  The Atlanta native knows how to build mystery in the hip-hop game. He shattered the glass of hip-hop expectations. Thug’s adlibs are unique and sought after by the industry’s greatest.  Notably, collaborations with Lil Wayne, J. Cole, Travis Scott, and Drake, raise the anticipation of what’s in store.

Thug recently appeared on The Breakfast Club for the first time in his career! Charlemagne admittedly stated, “Your voice is like an instrument. It sounds like it is a part of the beat.” Perhaps this is what sets him apart from those he’s outlasted in the game.  Thugger is known to keep it interesting.

The Cover Art

Right away we know that Thugger is gracing his fans with a life-reflecting album.  His cover art was flawlessly executed by Japanese artist SmileComplexx.  He pays homage to Octavio Ocampo who is renowned for his metamorphic painting technique. Significantly, one image of a dreamy visual concept transforms into an image of a similar look. Ultimately, representing another concept entirely. Thug is depicted facing himself, suggestively his alter ego. This album cover allows your eye to dance from corner to corner while going on a journey with the rapper.

Raising the bar

Punk, features an abundance of star collaborations like Drake, Travis Scott, J. Cole, Gunna, Future, Doja Cat, Post Malone, ASAP Rocky, and more.

The elemental track Die Slow, set the tone for the album as it features rapper Strick from his YSL record label. The opening is almost ritualistic as it confiscates your thoughts and hearkens to the lyrics. This was achieved through inviting guitar strums and gradually building drums. Right away you know that you are in for an adventure through Thugger’s mind.

“I gotta tell you that you’ll die tonight. You can go against these people you gone die slow, die slow.”

Thug premiered Die Slow at Rolling Loud in July, then again on Tiny Desk Concert. Although the song was recorded in 2019 in Italy, it is true to the rapper’s album portrayal. The features on this album are classic Thug collaborations.  His collaboration with J. Cole on Stressed is comparatively one of the most bountiful tracks with Cole’s quick flow and higher than normal pitched raps.

Throughout the album, Thug sings of his love woes. Stupid/Asking is a two in one melodic track. This track takes you on an emotional ride with this signature theme heard throughout. His effortless singing and subtle instrument establishments show the depth his music portrays.

Ode to the fallen

Adding more thirst for the 20 track album, Punk hosts a collaboration with the late Mac Miller. Day Before is a sought-after track due to its significant addition to the re-released Faces, by Miller’s estate.  This comes three years after his unfortunate passing.

Thug most recently revealed that the unreleased track was recorded the day before Miller’s passing in an interview with The Breakfast Club . He also features a long-time friend, the late Juice WRLD on Rich N**** Sh*t.  This dup is an obvious addition due to its nostalgic nature.

All in all, Thug gave us hit after hit on this album.  Not only does this release showcase evident growth for the artist, but also indicates that he has much more in store for his fans.

Young Thug Leaves It All And More On The Breakfast Club

Young Thug appears at The Breakfast Club, and is on tip of everyone’s tongue! Despite it being his first interview at the show, Thug definitely left his mark as one of the most extraordinary appearances on the show. The rapper talks beef, new album, Mac Miller collaboration, and so much more!

Thug squashes beef with Charlamagne

Following the release of Punk, his second album, Thug continues to let his name ring on all media fronts. Charlamagne Tha God opened the interview with a humorous approach in introducing Young Thug. The two settle on calling him Mr. Sex. Setting the tone for this overdue encounter, the two put their drawn-out “beef” to bed. In a clip shared, Thug responded to an exchange between Birdman and Charlemagne a few years back. Thug cleared the air by saying, “I never understood how could it go so far, we were just talking sh*t. And I was kind of young back then.”

Charlemagne continues by giving him accolades for his extended stint in the music industry. Surprisingly, Char addresses a faltered prediction he made on Vlad TV 10 years ago. He had sided with the possibility that Rich Homie Quan would outlast Thug in the industry. Thug was enthused but jokingly asked, “How you feel about that?”

On this insider, the rapper also let the audience in on the recording of his latest album Punk. He addressed accusations that he copied Kanye’s idea to require one color scheme at either’s listening party. Throughout the interview, the rapper is very calm and expressive to all questions about the hosts. He gives insight into his substantial relationship with fellow Atlanta rapper Lil Baby.

Thug talks Juice WRLD and Mac Miller at The Breakfast Club

Thug gave a gracious response to his dealings with the death of two of his industry friends; Juice WRLD and Mac Miller. Charlamagne inquired about whether or not he had gotten over their deaths. Thug urgently replied, “no.” He continued, “I think I’m still running from it.” Thug shocked the hosts revealing that he and Miller recorded Day Before, the day before Mac died.

In hindsight, this long-awaited interview was on time for the public. Thug showcased his gracious nature. he gave a transparent look into his life, much like his new album. Thug spoke entirely of growth and gave fans what they craved since he does not partake in many interviews.

Young Thug and Gunna Destroy Rolls Royce to Promote “Punk” Album

Car enthusiasts and gearheads look away. This article may induce nausea, vomiting, and/or feelings of great loss. To promote his upcoming album Punk, Young Thug decided to go big. Alongside close friends Gunna and Metro Boomin, he trashed a Rolls Royce Wraith. Why? It’s Punk, that’s why.

With the new album set to drop this Friday (October 15th), Thugger celebrated last Tuesday night (October 12th) with a release party at Delilah in West Hollywood, CA. However, the party alone just did not quite do it for the Atlanta rapper. Nothing less than the public execution of a brand new Rolls Royce Wraith would suffice. So, following the party, Thugger and his friends took their remaining energy out on the hapless Wraith.

So Much Fun

Pre-destruction, the car was spray-painted with the word “Punk”, on the windshield, doors, and body. But that was just the first defilement. Next, Thugger and friends took bats to it. In one video, Gunna can be seen absolutely wailing and stomping on the windshield, while Thug and co. beat the windows, hood, and trunk. Another video shows the massacre continuing, the rage directed at the rear of the car. The Wraith never stood a chance. Still, the assault could have been worse. Thug and his cohorts seemed to reign in some of their swings to avoid hitting members of the crowd or each other, a silver lining.

Thug-gery

Young Thug’s last album, 2019’s So Much Fun, was a slam dunk for the rapper, earning him a permanent place under the hip-hop sun. With Punk just days away, expectations for a follow-up are high. Though announced in August of 2019, Punk did not get an official release date until July of this year. Also on the docket for Thug is a spot on Saturday Night Live. This coming Saturday, he will make his musical guest debut, alongside Oscar-winning host Rami Malek.

The “Thugga Thugga” and Givenchy Collaboration

Creative Director at Givenchy, Matthew M Williams features Young Thug on the soundtrack to his show.  Thugs punk fashion style go hand in hand with what Williams set out to achieve.  Williams shared that it was Young Thug’s idea for the show to take place on a large scale. Coupled with William’s designs, the 40,000 capacity venue was the perfect place for Thug to share his un-released tracks. Williams gave more insight on what his vision of the collection would look like:

“In my collections, I always speak to lived reality. For Spring 2022, our first pre-collection runway show, I wanted to bring together my American roots and my brand new life in Paris. There’s an energy of striking out for a new adventure, of drawing on something familiar yet creating something completely new. Chito made an ideal collaborator because we share that storyline; we speak the same language. Like me, he expresses his distinct visual signatures through unique pieces that give people total freedom to make creations their own personal statement.”
Matthew M. Williams

The Givenchy Spring-Summer 2022 Collection

The Givenchy ready-to-wear; men and women, Spring-Summer 2022 Collection, is one of Williams’ favorite collections. He allowed himself to take a personal journey and play with colors to highlight his “Sunny” days in Los Angeles, California. The collection opens with streetwear designs that encompass black leather layered looks. Coupled with leather boots, the looks bring a still chill vibe.

The show continues the transition into the spring collection by engaging khakis to pastels. In particular, jackets and blazers continue throughout the collection. Flirty skirts and shirts in the women’s collection, he illustrates what fashion in spring and summer will feel like. Unlike the women’s collection, Williams circles around color-blocking streetwear with a flare of printed pants.

The show overall presents a before and after look into fashion. Williams’ did a great job of giving us timeless looks. Whether futuristic constructed jackets or 15th-century ruffles, he took the audience to the future and back with the help of Thug’s new tracks.

Punk is set to drop next week on Oct. 15. Until then, check out more stories on celeb’s @FMHipHop across all social media.

#FMSpotlight: Rico Nasty and 100 Gecs Drops “iPhone” Music Video

Rico Nasty, DMV-born rapper, rockstar, and punk-goth style icon continues to turn the rap world upside down as she recently dropped her new single “iPhone”with the music video produced by 100 Gecs’ artist Dylan Brady. The two have worked together in the past as Rico Nasty was featured on 100 Gecs’ electro-pop track “Ringtone” released just this year. The production and sound of these collaboration tracks are almost similar, yet unique in its own form.

Rico Nasty’s music style is interestingly enough slightly different from many other female rappers in the game today as she tends to produce music with a more cohesive sound of electric guitars, autotune, and heavy bass tied in with distinctive trap and electronic beats. Apparently, the single was set to be released this past November however, it was put on hold in an effort of Rico Nasty trying to get Lil Uzi Vert on the track. The music video overall includes her own personal 3D avatars, portrays a cyber-animated visual, and almost feels like you are on a psychedelic adventure while watching it. Check out the music video below!
