Teenager Who Created Neo-Nazi Videos That Ignited A Racist Buffalo Mass Shooting Is Sentenced To 11 Years In Prison

As the American writer Kilroy J. Oldster once wrote: “Hate springs from fear. Behind every hateful crime and act of human brutality is an admission of fearfulness.” In a recent case, a U.K. teen responsible for creating racist content, deeply influenced by a neo-Nazi who recorded himself murdering Black people in a Buffalo grocery store, serves 11 and a half years in prison.

For creating neo-Nazi video propaganda that advocated terrorism, Daniel John Harris, 19, will spend the next decade behind bars. His sentence warns those who choose to develop and spread hateful messages of racism and violence.

At least seven mentions occurred of Harris and his work by the shooter who live-streamed his murder of ten people at a grocery store in May 2022. Additionally, gunman Anderson Lee Aldrich responsible for shooting a gay nightclub in Colorado, killing five and injuring 17, reportedly consumed them. This serves as a dire reminder that hateful speech people produce and spread can have real-world consequences and should be of grave concern.

Daniel Harris Was Aware Of His Actions

The arrest of Harris took place on May 16, 2022, two days following the attack in Buffalo, and the U.K. teen pleaded guilty in December. Late last week, he was sentenced. Daniel’s sentencing confirms the severity of the crime. It highlights the need for global collaboration of law enforcement agencies to take swift and decisive action against the white supremacy movement.

A fairly long diary the Buffalo mass murderer kept during the days preceding the shooting also references Harris’ videos. Within the shooter’s online journal, he wrote, “Shout out to (Harris’ online name) thank you for your service.” This suggests that Harris’ videos inspired the shooter and likely directly influenced his motivations for committing the mass murder.

According to the authorities, the teenager was aware of the deadly consequences of his actions.

“The threat he posed became such that we had to act in order to ensure the safety of the wider public. The reference to one of his videos in the prelude to the Buffalo attack is a case in point,” said Counter-Terrorism Detective Inspector Chris Brett. “Harris could see the reaction his videos were getting. This was not a one-off, this was not a game, this was a concerted effort to generate a following and influence people.”

U.K. Teen Was Not Only Trying To Attract Attention

Furthermore, the U.K. teen was not content with simply drawing attention. Police allege that Harris attempted to turn his influence into a tangible weapon by using a 3D printer to create a handgun. These propagandists are using persuasive techniques to mislead and manipulate vulnerable populations, thus posing a severe threat to our global security.

“Harris’ arrest shows the international nature of the violent online extreme right, especially the subset of individuals who glorify attackers such as the Christchurch terrorist,” Joshua Fisher-Birch, an analyst on the far-right at the Counter-Extremism Project, told VICE News. “While many of these individuals are concerned with committing attacks in their area, they are also part of this online community that seeks to encourage violence in other locations in the name of white supremacism.”

Violence – Inciting Incidents

According to Fisher-Birch, there have been other cases of supporters facing arrest for their part in inspiring extremists of the far right worldwide.

A Slovakian man, for instance, was sentenced to six years in November 2022 for his involvement in terrorist acts, and Fisher-Birch asserts that he was “an important player within the international neo-Nazi accelerationist online community and spread information helpful in committing terrorist attacks.”

In another similar instance, in February 2019, Benjamin Bogard, a college student from New Braunfels, Texas, was arrested on child pornography charges after an anonymous online tipster alerted federal authorities to his Instagram account, which featured numerous videos of him clutching weapons and threatening violence against minorities.

Neo-Nazi Videos By The U.K. Teen Remain Online

It is still possible to find remnants of Harris’s online presence, as many of the videos the U.K. teen posted can be viewed on streaming platforms with lax moderation policies. It’s like picking through a post-apocalyptic landscape to find bits and pieces of the civilization that once was. The remains of ancient artifacts are still present from time to time, but they are only a shadow of what once existed.

Among his videos are a feature-length video celebrating the Christchurch shooter and videos advocating anti-vaccination and untruths regarding COVID. As a final video, Daniel celebrated the Buffalo killings. On a Neo-Nazi video platform where the Buffalo shooter participated, only one video resonated, one where the teenager explicitly called for “subhuman” killings.

The judge who handled the case described the teenager as an extremely dangerous young man who produced obscene artwork. Also, he believes that the killers accomplished exactly what Harris intended them to do.

“You intended to encourage terrorism, and it’s plain that what was being encouraged was lethal, racist, and antisemitic violence, as well as violence against the gay community,” said Judge Patrick Field KC, according to the BBC.

Sending A Message

It can be daunting to think that no matter where we go, we could be in danger of encountering those who choose hatred and violence. The world flourishes with hatred and violence. It can be challenging to understand why some people express their hatred violently.

We must find ways to prevent and address these hateful acts to create a safer world for everyone. Our world is sinful, and there is no perfect world. Educating ourselves, our families, and our communities about the dangers of hate and violence is ideal. We should also take action whenever we witness acts of violence. All grieving families are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

The Congressional Black Caucus Requests To Meet With Sesame Place’s President

It is undeniable that the recent incident at Sesame Street’s theme park, Sesame Place, in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, was highly offensive.

The disrespect shown to children of any race should never be tolerated. The experience of discrimination is already distressing for adults, but it becomes even more horrendous when a child is involved. Theme parks are ideal places for children to spend time with family and friends. However, the recent incident reveals that the experience has been tainted.

What Happened At Sesame Place?

On July 16, two young Black girls were ignored by a costumed character dressed as “Rosita” at Sesame Place. In the viral video posted on Instagram by their mother, Jodi Brown, the character is seen welcoming white families with open arms. A moment later, both black girls extended their arms toward the character, asking for a hug. However, rather than fulfilling their wishes, “Rosita” rejects them and departs.

A post shared by Jeezy (@__jodiii__)

Furthermore, the wearer of that costume presented an inaccurate picture of what “Rostia” is really like. Due to this, those girls may have been misled into believing that the actual character of the show actively discriminates against children of a particular ethnicity.

Background On The American Television Series ‘Sesame Street’

There is no demographic group that Sesame Street does not appeal to. Having premiered in 1969, this show continues to be produced today. It is one of the longest-running shows in the history of American television. Sesame Street is an excellent educational source for preschoolers. In addition to Elmo and Big Bird, many other popular characters are on the show, including Cookie Monster, Oscar the Grouch, and others.

Sesame Ready for a Change

As a result of this disappointment, the Congressional Black Caucus, led by its chairwoman, Rep Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio), has requested a meeting with the head and general manager, Cathy Valeriano of Sesame Place, per The Hill.

“Sesame Street is one of the nation’s highest-rated TV shows that, at one time, more than 95 percent of all American Preschoolers watched,” The Black Congressional Caucus said. “So, naturally, Sesame Place should be where all children can go to have fun and celebrate. Sadly, that has not been the case.”

This meeting will focus on how the park plans to execute changes, develop action plans, and provide employee training.

“Over the past week, we’ve seen multiple glaring examples of racism coming from the park, including the viral video in which two beautiful little Black girls were blatantly rejected by a character they idolized while white children were embraced,” the members said in a statement.

Apology

As reported by ABC News, former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland has spoken out about the incident. “So, had that been me, that whole parade would’ve been in flames,” she said.

As a result of the outrage surrounding the incident, Sesame Place issued an apology on July 18. According to them, the “Rosita” character has affirmed that the “no” gesture in the video was not intended for any specific individual. “Rosita” was responding to several requests from someone in the crowd who asked her to hold their child for a photo, which is not allowed.

This incident has generated a great deal of confusion. According to “Rosita,” it was not intentional, but most viewers believe otherwise. Who is in error here?

J Prince defends Joe Rogan Against Racist Allegations “I Forgive Him”

An unexpected alliance has formed between J Prince and Joe Rogan. Earlier this week (Feb. 7) Rap-a-Lot Records CEO J Prince sprung to his defense via Instagram. “Joe Rogan is not a racist” he typed. “I know this brother. It takes a sincere individual to admit when they are wrong and have fucked up about a situation. As you can hear he’s done that and I forgive him because I never want to become one of those people that are filled with unforgiveness and hate, that we complain about all the time.”

“Let this be an example to others of the sensitivity of the word ‘n-gga’ being said by anybody other than a n-gga lol.” He ended the message by emphasizing his disapproval of people outside the black community using the n-word. It should be noted J Prince has appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience previously, similarly to other black community figureheads like Dave Chapelle and Mike Tyson.

J Prince is a well-respected figure in the Houston community. Most recently, he’s worked with Kanye West and Drake to hold the Larry Hoover benefit concert to end their years-long beef. While many still hold Rogan in low regard for his past actions, J Prince’s word has shown to hold weight in the recording industry.

Without a doubt, Former Fear Factor host and podcaster Joe Rogan has had a rough week in the media. Recently, prolific celebrities like Neil Young, Mary Trump and Sharon Stone have taken a public stand against the 54-year old for his anti-vaccine comments. In addition, his beliefs surrounding race are magnified. This after a particularly explicit compilation took the internet by storm. Despite the disapproval from many black posters on social media, he now has an unexpected figure on his side.

India Arie Calls out Joe

Rogan has utilized his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, to drive others away from the Covid-19 vaccine. “If you’re like 21 years old, and you say to me, ‘Should I get vaccinated?’ I’ll go no,” he said in an April episode. Moreover, he brought anti-vaccine figures like virologist Dr. Rover Malone, on his podcast to spout similar rhetoric. A “mass formation psychosis” is what Malone called the insistence from the public to get vaccinated.

Evidently, his most controversial content is surrounding the use of racial slurs. Last week(Feb. 4), R&B artist India Arie, took to her Instagram story to expound on why she was removing her music from Spotify. “I empathize with the people leaving for the COVID disinformation reasons and I think that they should,” Arie started. “I think that Joe Rogan has the right to say what he wants to say, I also think I have the right to say what I want to say[…] Spotify is built off the back of the music streaming. So they take the money that’s built from streaming and pay this guy 100 million dollars and they pay us .003% of a penny? Just take me off!” Intercut with the ‘Steady Love’ singers rant was a series of videos containing Rogan’s vast usage of the n-word. Take a look below:

Following the explicit video, she subsequently explained her reasoning on her story, condemning Spotify for their decision to uphold Rogan’s platform while underpaying artists. “Paying musicians a fraction of a penny? And HIM $100M? This shows the type of company they are and the company that they keep. “I’m tired” she typed. Clearly, Arie’s call to action has garnered a loud public response.

The internet turns against Joe Rogan

Several fans and political commentators met India with support. Many announced they planned to delete their Spotify accounts and never utilize the platform again in protest of Rogan.

https://twitter.com/writtenbyhanna/status/1488294980745576448?s=10

As of now, Spotify has reportedly lost 19% of its subscriber base according to a consumer poll from Forrester Research. Furthermore, that number is set to continue to rise as Spotify CEO Daniel Ek publicly defended Rogan Sunday, (Feb. 6) saying “I do not believe that silencing Joe is the answer.” Subsequently, Ek confirmed Rogan’s requests to remove episodes containing offensive language from the platform.

Joe says sorry

In the face of all the controversy, Joe Rogan has issued an official apology. He posted a brief video on his Instagram last week (Feb.5) addressing his regret and intentions to do better.

“Now, I haven’t said it in years. I certainly would never want to offend someone for entertainment with something as stupid as racism.” He says. In the apology, he references his use of racial slurs as “regretful and shameful”.

Public scrutiny has found him despite his staggering popularity. The question is, was Joe Rogan’s apology sincere? Or because of social media pressure?

India Arie Plans To Remove Music From Spotify Over Joe Rogan’s Podcast

Like Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, R&B legend India Arie plans to take down her songs from Spotify due to Joe Rogan’s podcast.

india arie
India Arie plans to pull her music from Spotify.

On Monday, January 31st, Arie took to Instagram to say she disagrees with Rogan’s “language around race.”

“I have decided to pull my music and podcast from Spotify,” she wrote. “Neil Young opened a door that I MUST walk through. I believe in freedom of speech. However, I find Joe Rogan problematic for reasons OTHER than his Covid interviews… FOR ME ITS ALSO HIS language around race. What I am talking about is RESPECT – who gets it and who doesn’t.”

According to Hip Hop DX, the artist did not reveal what she thought was an issue. However, Joe Rogan received backlash for his choice of words. The podcast host said it’s “weird” to call people Black unless they’re “100% African, from the darkest place, where they’re not wearing any clothes all day.”

India Arie Not Only Had An Issue With Joe Rogan But Came For Spotify As Well

As of February 1st, Aries music still plays on Spotify. However, she didn’t seem too thrilled with the company and how they pay each artist. She continued her Instagram post by saying, “Paying musicians a fraction of a penny and HIM $100M?” she added. “This shows the type of company they are and the company they keep.”

Joe Rogan has yet to respond directly to Arie’s statement on Instagram. Spotify, though, chimed in to say, “We want all the world’s music and audio content to be available to Spotify users. With that comes great responsibility in balancing both safety for listeners and freedom for creators.”

india arie
Arie is not happy with Spotify for allowing Rogans Content.

FMHipHop reported early in January that this is not the first time the R&B artist called out the music industry. Arie stated in an old Instagram post referring to the 10-year challenge, “seeing old pictures reminds me of how TRASH the music industry is.” She explained the industry’s tendencies towards emphasizing racism, sexism, and deceit.

Kyrie Irving Condemns Mistreatment From Celtics Fans

Kyrie Irving condemns the mistreatment of NBA players by Boston Celtics fans.

The NBA has had a rocky return to filled arenas and fan interactions after the pandemic. Brooklyn Nets player Kyrie Irving is one of the few players at the forefront of the controversy. Once again, the Net’s point guard finds himself at odds with Boston fans. This time due to a fan getting arrested for throwing a water bottle at after game 4 of the playoffs.

Kyrie has swiftly denounced any form of racist behavior and mistreatment from fans, stating after Sunday’s game that: “As a black man playing in the NBA dealing with a lot of this stuff is fairly difficult because you never know when it could happen or what’s gonna happen at the end of the game or before the game.”

This comes after a series of similar incidents involving players and fans. Just a few days ago, Washington Wizards star Russell Westbrook had an intense exchange with a fan who threw popcorn at him. A few days after that, Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young was spat on.

Russell Westbrook confronting Fan for mistreatment

As players like Kyrie hope to ease the tensions between players and fans, constant violations and mistreatment by fans continue to threaten the safety of players.

Killer Mike Blasts Restaurant For Denying Service to Former Atlanta Hawks Player

ATLANTA — Former Atlanta Hawks player Dominique Wilkins sent off a eye-opening tweet Saturday after being denied service at a restaurant. And while the staff claimed that they were only “enforcing the dress code,” Wilkins accused the restaurant of discrimination saying, “In my many years in the world, I’ve eaten at some of the greatest restaurants in the world, but never have I felt prejudice or been turned away because of the color of my skin, until today in #atlanta In @LeBilboquetAtl #turnedawaybecauseimblack.”

Moreover, Rapper Killer Mike quickly rushed to Wilkins’ defense.  And calling on the restaurant to make things right.

“@lebilboquetatlanta ya’ll better make this lame shit right. How ya’ll mistreat “NIQUE” @dominiquewilkins21!”said Killer Mike in an Instagram post on Sunday. “Ya’ll lame AF for that shawty! #ThatAintAtlantaALL #RacismIsLame #SuperWeak #ShutemDown.”

As a result, the restaurant in response released an apology but continued to deny the accusations of racism.

“We sincerely apologize to Dominique Wilkins for the events that occurred on May 22,” the tweet read. And while we will continue to have a dress code, we realize our current policy is subject to interpretation and can be unintentionally demeaning and divisive.” The restaurant has pledged to provide diversity, equity, and inclusion training to employees, reevaluate their dress code, and establish more rigid protocols to make sure all policies are equitably enforced. But we will not tolerate implicit or explicit bias. We have done and will continue do the work to ensure our restaurant is a place where all feel welcome,” said the statement.

In conclusion, the rap world and real world needs more like Killer Mike! We see you.

Papa John’s Pizza Founder Say’s He Can’t Stop Using The N-word!

Former CEO of Papa John’s, John Schnatter, has an issue. He said he’d taken the last 20 months to rid his vocabulary and dictionary of the n-word. It takes 30 days to form a habit. However, Schnatter doesn’t seem to have reached his goal after almost two years. Perhaps it’s because he isn’t entirely committed to it.

The public fall of John’s empire began in 2018 when he stepped down from the board. After being outed for using the slur during a training exercise. The irony of it all is, the activity was conducted to prevent future public relations blunders such as this one. On the call, Schnatter was asked how he would distance himself from racist groups, and he responded that Colonel Sanders (KFC) used the n-word and never received backlash.

papa johns

In a recent interview with One America News, John says that he is “not a racist.”

He went on to say,

“We’ve had three goals for the last 20 months, to get rid of this N-word in my vocabulary and dictionary and everything else, because it’s just not true, figure out how they did this, and get on with my life.”

John did apologize when the incident first occurred. Now, he’s throwing accountability to the wind and blaming his board for painting him as a racist. This struggle is very odd for someone who admits to saying the word and painstakingly working to rid it from their vocabulary simultaneously.

I think John needs a new publicist; this one isn’t working.

The best thing about their pizza is the random pepperoncini that come in the box. Not only is Papa John’s pizza the front runner for most disgusting pizza ever (Don’t debate me), but its founder is a racist. An admitted, then retracted racist, but a racist nonetheless. He probably sprinkled the n-word in everyday conversation and across his nasty a$$ pizzas.

#FMPolitics: Happy Birthday, Emmett Till!

Happy Birthday, Emmett Till! (July 25, 1941 – August 28, 1955)

A plaque of Emmett Till’s gravesite at Burr Oak Cemetery May 4, 2005, in Alsip, Illinois. (Photo by Scott Olson/Getty Images)

Today Emmett Louis “Bobo” Till might have been celebrating his 79th birthday at a backyard barbecue surrounded by family enjoying food warming to the soul with sips of his favorite beverage in hand. Between sips of what I’d imagine might be anything from a bourbon done neat to a green juice packed with spirulina, he’d almost certainly be reflecting on how he made it to such a senior age in a world obsessed with exterminating the Black body. He might have had a companion, been married with children – grandchildren, even. Sadly, we will have to continue on with our imagination of what this birthday would have been like for him, as the young brother was snatched from this earth at the blooming age of 14 a mere 65 years ago.

The Lynching of Emmett Till

An old photo of Emmett and Mamie Till (left to right).

If you’re not familiar with the lynching of Emmett Till, I am currently giving you hard side-eye from the corner of whatever space you occupy while reading this article. For the sake of journalistic integrity, Till was the son of Mamie Elizabeth Till-Mobley (colloquially referred to as Mamie Till) and U.S. Army Vet Louis Till, who was also executed 10 years before his son under eerily similar circumstances while serving in Italy. Emmett’s mother sent him down to Money, Mississippi to spend time with his great uncle Moses Wright and his extended family members. In a week, he would be menacingly tortured and killed at the hands of Roy Bryant and J. W. Milam for allegedly whistling at then Carolyn Bryant (sister of J. W. Milam and wife of Roy Bryant). An all-white jury – Black people and white women were not allowed to sit on the jury, for the record – would acquit Milam and Bryant of their kidnapping and murder charges. This is just a snapshot of all that transpired around this case, so please further enlighten yourself on the cases of events surrounding Emmett Till’s story (here’s a start). You will see that young Till is one name in a sea of many more Black males who were claimed as a victim to racist, white terror.

Mamie Till overlooking Emmett Till’s dead body.

Left with little-to-no options, Mamie decided to utilize the reach and influence of the media to bring widespread awareness and attention to her son’s murder. The Black populous of the United States of America was brimming with terror as photos of Emmett Till’s defaced corpse were published in Jet Magazine on September 15, 1955. It would take 30 years for the mainstream media, NBC’s Today show, in this case, to cover the lynching, finally making white America aware of this gruesome display of monstrosity.

With the Justice Department reopening the investigation into this case, there’s no telling whether any charges will be brought up against Carolyn Bryant Donham (and any other potential living accessories to this crime). And, while we have a movement of protesters who are in the midst of screaming for the abolition of a prison system dedicated to punishing and further perpetuating the harm caused in many instances, we have to reconcile what we see as the best mechanism(s) to hold people accountable for acts particularly as heinous as murder and the lot (that’s a series of articles best saved for another post). Out of respect for our fallen little brother Emmett Till, make sure you do your part to fight for an anti-racist society that condemns and vanishes anti-Black discrimination from the face of the planet. Go give the Black boys and men in your life a hug while you’re at it, too!

#CherryJuice Lil Wayne: Racism Doesn’t Exist Anymore

I wanna know what lean and hi-grade strain he was taking to make him say the most absolute dumbest statement in the world.

Lil Wayne is thoroughly convinced that racism doesn’t exist anymore because why? White people listen to his music and attend his concerts.

According to an interview on “Undisputed” Tuesday, he was said to cancel rumors about him retiring from the rap game, but his quote got some folks thinking…well…maybe he should.

“I don’t want to be bashed, because I don’t want to seem like I’m on the wrong side,” Wayne responded. “But I thought that was clearly a message that there was no such thing as racism.”

Wayne explained that he doesn’t have one type of crowd but, rather, his fan base has always included “everybody.” Later, according to Pitchfork, he said that he thinks millennials are distancing themselves from racism because it is “not cool to them.”

Wayne said that he was aware that he might get criticized for his statement, and boy….did Black Twitter have a field day with him. Grab your popcorn.
