Pop Smoke Music Vault Empty, Claims Mike Dee

Bad news for any fans wanting more Pop Smoke releases: they aren’t coming. In fact, it appears that any remaining work by the late Pop Smoke simply does not exist, according to a close friend of his.

In a recent interview with RAPTV host Kalisha Perera, Mike “Mike Dee” Durodola, close confidant and friend of Pop Smoke, gave details on Pop’s music vault, linking it to his posthumous album Faith:

“[In] my opinion, instead of dropping all 30 songs, I would have waited … until now, until next year, you know,” he said. “That way, his name will stay alive, instead of just dropping it all at one time, you know.”

And while a great deal of Pop Smoke’s unreleased material  was used on this album, is it possible that some remains? According to Mike Dee:

“I’m guessing this is what he had left in the vault. Yeah…”

Too much Faith?

The success of Smoke’s posthumous July release Faith is undeniable. Rocketing to the number one position on the Billboard charts, it featured the likes of Kanye West, Cudi, and Pharrell, to name just a few. Riding on the success of it, record label Victor Victor Worldwide released a deluxe edition soon after. Adding ten more songs brought the tracklist to a massive thirty songs.  Fans thought they had cause to celebrate. Faith had turned into an odyssey of hits and new material.

However, as Mike Dee says, this has bled the vault dry. Coupled with this is the criticism leveled at Victor Victor Worldwide for the handling of the material. All in all, it appears that the vault on original Pop Smoke material is all but spent.

Pop Smoke: surviving in features

If there is any silver lining in all this, we can find it in features.

In February, Meek Mill previewed collaborative material with Pop Smoke, keeping release details sparse.  In October 2020, French Montana reportedly had enough work with Pop Smoke to release a proper album.

Pop Smoke’s Second Posthumous Album Announced

Pop Smoke’s second posthumous album is now available for preorder!

Pop Smoke was a legend in the making

His unique voice and cadence made him a hip-hop phenom. He became the leader of the emerging New York drill scene and was already getting praise from New York and hip-hop legends. Smoke’s most famous songs “Dior” & “Welcome to the Party” were club staples and each earned platinum status.

Unfortunately, Pop Smoke was shot and killed in a home invasion in February of last year, ending his young but promising career. The loss of a face of the new generation of rap shocked the hip-hop world.

To honor his memory, 50 Cent ⎯ a mentor and inspiration for Pop Smoke ⎯ executively produced a posthumous album. That album titled Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon, was released on July 3, 2020. Met with critical and commercial success, the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. All 19 tracks from the album charted on the Billboard Hot 100. The album spawned top-10 singles “For the Night” and “What You Know Bout Love“. In addition, the album won Top Billboard 200 Album and Top Rap Album at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards.

Now, almost a year later, Pop Smoke’s team has announced a second posthumous record is coming.

A new Pop Smoke album will be released on July 16, as announced late last month.

However yesterday, the pre-order on Apple Music went live. The album seems to be a self-titled project and will feature 17 songs. Along with the pre-order being live, you can now listen to the outro of the project. The outro seems to be a motivation to younger artists and his fans.

You can listen to the outro and preorder the album here.

Family of Pop Smoke’s Murderer Hopes to Meet with New York Rapper’s Parents

Murder suspect of the late New York rapper hopes to meet with the family of Pop Smoke privately.

It has been over a year since the tragic murder of up-and-coming New York rapper Pop Smoke.

During his time here, he was a pioneer for the New York drill scene and was making waves with his comparison to 50 Cent. Pop Smoke was unfortunately shot to death in a home robbery in February of last year. The rapper forever lives through his music with big hits like “Dior” and “Welcome to the Party ”, along with a posthumous album that became his first number-one record and resulted in a BBMA for Best Rap Album.

Hope for closure

After a long grieving process, it seems that the family of Pop Smoke’s murderer is hoping for reconciliation. Corey Walker was the only member of the four men facing charges for Pop Smoke’s death who wasn’t a minor at the time. Now, Walker’s family hopes to set up a private meeting with the family of the late rapper. They hope to deliver some form of closure and convey respect and deep regret to the grieving family. Christopher Darden, the defense attorney of Walker, however, felt it may not be the right time for this meeting.

“They might need time. I will also understand if (his mom) is not inclined to have that conversation. Everything we have done and said has been done and said while keeping in mind the great respect we have for the victim and the victim’s family.”

Pop Smoke’s mother, a teacher with the New York City Department of Education, said Thursday she couldn’t say whether she would agree to such a meeting.

“This is new information to me. I’ll have to learn more. I’m working on a lesson plan right now. That is my focus. I really can’t say.”

Walker just went through a preliminary hearing last month that ended up going to trial with new charges. During the hearing, prosecutors claimed Walker scouted the house before the robbery and planned to hold it up at gunpoint. The defense attorney claims that while that may be true, Walker never actually entered the house and was against them shooting the rapper.

Hopefully, everyone can heal from this tragic event.

#FMSpotlight: Pops Smoke feat. Lil Tjay “Mood Swings” (Official Music Video)

French Montana feat. Pop Smoke "Double G" (Official Music Video)

Mood Swings was one of the biggest hits off of late Brooklyn rapper Pop Smoke’s (@realpopsmoke) post-humous album Shoot For The Stars, Aim For The Moon. The record sees Pop reuniting with Bronx rapper Lil Tjay (@liltjay) for a slow-moving track in which they both take turns referencing their experiences with women and the problems that come along with fame and their expensive lifestyles.

The music video premiered last Wednesday, October 7th, 2020, and it has already reached 5.4 million views. The video was filmed after Pop Smoke’s tragic death because there is no footage of him singing along to his lyrics nor is he a part of the video’s plot. The 20-year-old died on February 19, 2020, after being shot twice during a home invasion in Hollywood Hills, CA.

In late July 2020, the song started trending on TikTok. Part of the song’s success is attributed to the several skits that were made sampling the song’s last chorus, which is catchy due to the juxtaposition between Pop’s lower-pitched and Lil Tjay’s higher-pitched voices.

The two New York rappers have an extensive history of collaborations and have worked together on other songs such as:

  • Pop’s 2019 War
  • Pop’s 2020 Mannequin
  • Guido Dos Santos’ 2019 Mary Jane
  • Tjay’s 2020 Zoo York
  • Additionally, the two are known to have multiple informal and unreleased tracks together, such as Pop’s unreleased song Cappin.

Tjay released a song titled Forever Pop after his friend’s sudden death.

Know I’m finna make it to the tippy-tippy top, bro, for you
I knew that’s what you wanna see me do
Can’t believe this shit, can’t believe this shit is true
Took you out your glory, who wanna see you lose?
Woke up in the mornin’, see my n**** on the news

A Tribute To Pop Smoke

OUR INTRO TO THE WOO

We are hip-hop fans through and through. Our hobbies are deciphering lyrics – listen, man I’m a rap nerd and I’m not ashamed. The beats matter, but lyrics are the driving force for me when it comes to hip-hop.

So with that being said, being a Pop Smoke fan might come off as an anomaly  for some of us. Considering what’s normally in our rotation, lyrical monsters like Black Thought, Royce Da 5’9, and Nas are mainstays. Yes, we try to give everyone a chance, but let’s be honest most of us tend to find our way back to those type of MCs.

Discovering Pop Smoke

Around this time last year, Pop Smoke was repeatedly suggested on Tidal. We played Meet The Woo  and loved it off bat because it felt fresh, but when we heard “Scenario” and he rapped:

“I don’t know why these filthy niggas talkin’ hot
There be no filthy niggas on the scene
I got like fifty rounds up in that clip
I put that fifty clip up to your bean
Then let it bang for nothing
10K in back the Wraith for nothin’
Zanotti got shot and he sang for nothin’
Hope the lawyer beat the case, a hundred
Nigga, I’m the Big Fuu, Big 092
I spent like four racks on Amiris
What the fuck they gon’ tell me? Y’all niggas leery
Step back for the three like I’m Curry (Swish)
Nigga, I’m a big Suvy, I make a movie
Pull up and clap your kufi
Nigga, I make an action movie, I make an action movie”

We were completely sold on the kid. Something about him and 808Melo working together; it’s magic. The chemistry between those two in particular stands out. That song is followed by Dior, which is one of the more popular songs from the project. As with everything in life, we understand everything has an acquired taste and hip-hop is no different. Everything ain’t for everybody, but rap nerds and big jeans rapper lovers alike will have to get used to this because Pop Smoke was amazing.
