Why The Verzuz Preshow Battle Featured These R&B Gems

The Verzuz battle between Omarion and Mario went down last night; it is one for the books. It was also hilariously the most prolonged and unexpected addition to the show’s catalog. While the Verzuz attendants were amped up for this prolific night in R&B, they had no idea what they were in for. The night began with some highly notable R&B talents: Sammie, Pleasure P, Bobby Valentino, and Ray J.

With acclaimed comedian DeRay Davis hosting and the DJ of the night serenading the crowd with top slow jams of the 1990s and 2000s, the night was off to a nostalgic start. However, as the pre-show stars began to throw playful banter around, fans had to ask: is this the battle?

The vocals were all over the place; maybe we can blame the alcohol. One thing stands, these R&B thugs from Verzuz were once heartthrobs when they took over the charts throughout their musical careers. Stay with us as we run down some of our famous jams from the “drunk Uncles: we know and love.

Sammie’s Long R&B History

Sammie opened the show with the hit “Kiss Me Through The Phone,” featuring Soulja Boy. The 2008 track was monumental in young love and technology progression. This song alone pushed the puppy lovers into a frenzy and popularized the need for a video phone.

However, Sammie was on the scene long before video phones appeared. In 1999, a pint-sized 12-year-old Sammie danced and sang his way into pre-teens. Child stars are rare, and with his pipes and smooth moves, Sammie easily is an excellent addition to R&B history.

Bobby Valentino

Bobby Valentino caught R&B enthusiasts by surprise with his distinct and captivating voice. Let’s face it, he’s easy on the eyes too. His debut single, “Slow Down,” hit the spring of 2005 like golden honey and was indeed for the honeys. Valentino’s assessment of the love interest having a “butterfly tattoo” made it a trend to have that fly art.

Bobby V has many bangers under his belt, but who can deny the dynamic of the Ludacris and Valentino duo on “Pimpin All Over The World.”

Pleasure P’s Vocals On Verzuz

Pleasure P came as 1 part of the quad group Pretty Ricky. If you wanted sexy, steamy lyrics and visuals to match, this was the group for you. Splashing on the scene with their raunchy single, “Grind On Me,” the Bluestars set summer 2005 ablaze. Pleasure P’s silky voice lathered the slow beats and surrounded the raps of his bandmates. It was evident Pleasure’s mastered vocals would then outrun the group.

Indeed it did when he released his solo debut, “Did You Wrong,” under Atlantic Records in Jul 2008. Nothing would if this song didn’t win a man his lady back.

Ray J… Brandy’s little brother!

Although often referred to as Brandy’s little brother, Ray J’s business moves and light-hearted approach to trying situations make him a self-owned person. Undoubtedly, his openness to dating and “hitting” socialite Kim Kardashian first left a stamp in the world of celebrity entertainment.

But, it was his single, “One Wish,” that would solidify his ties to music and quickly go down as one of the greatest R&B songs of all time. Adding to the odes to young lovers, “One Wish” then made you want to love someone as hard as Ray J sang the lyrics.

Still, the R&B Verzuz night was a beautiful disaster. Procedurally, the show must go on. One thing is also for sure, we can’t wait to see who is up next for a Verzuz battle.

Vocal Abilities During Verzuz Pre-Show Earns D+

Ray J and Bobby V teamed up against Pleasure P and Sammie. Questions about either team’s vocal abilities were not concerned before the pre-show started. Immediately that changed after the first song.

Sammie Vocals Shinned Through

Sammie had the best vocal abilities at the last Verzuz. Especially compared to everyone else on the pre-show card. He sounded almost identical to every track he performed. About midway through the pre-show, Sammie realized he was the best singer on the stage. He started flexing his abilities and singing everyone else’s songs. He even took time to outsing Ray J on “One Wish.”

The Vocals Lacked During The Pre-Show

Bobby V and Pleasure P stayed in the middle of the vocal pack. Both singers had a tough night, but Bobby V struggled more than Pleasure P. Most of the night, Bobby V had difficulties with his runs, high notes, staying in tune, and holding nights. Despite his struggles, he kept singing without the tracks playing. Pleasure P only struggled at the beginning of the pre-show, but as the night went on, his singing got better.

Ray J was the worst vocal performer of the Verzuz night. He beat out Omarion for the worst of the night. Nothing he performed sounded good. Fans were still ready to forgive Ray J; all he had to do was perform “One Wish” at a high level.

He tried his best on his biggest song, but his vocals failed to get the job done. Ray J did so badly on the song that the other vocalist decided to help. Pleasure P, Sammie, and Bobby V all joined together to harmonize “One Wish.” This helped upset Ray J, and he displayed his disappointment.

A Night of Chaos & Laughs

The pre-show was a vocal disaster. Sammie and, at times, Pleasure P were the only saving grace during the pre-show. Ray J and Bobby V had no chance against Pleasure P and Sammie. One team just had more hits and better performance. The pre-show was a mess, but Mario would ultimately come and save the entire night.

#FMSpotlight: Kissie Lee – “My Love” & “Sheesh (feat. Lightskin Keisha)” (Listen)

Kissie Lee seemingly finds her other half in “My Love.” The beat, produced by Mr. Hanky, is a feel-good nostalgic R&B meets hip-hop offering. Moreover, the R&B singer taps into a soulful register. She even delivers the song’s verses and hook akin to Soul For Real‘s “Candy Rain.”

From the beginning, the Georgia crooner expresses how his presence has changed her outlook on love for the better.

You got what I’m looking for/Been searching all my life,” she sings.

After, she speaks about their encounter being “love at first sight.”

Because he treats her like the queen she is, Kissie Lee wants to reciprocate that energy.

She delivers, “Boy you got all the right moves/That’s why I f*ck with you.”

Should they spend some alone time together, things are bound to get intimate.

Deeper into the song, Kissie Lee goes on to say that they’re the perfect match. She lists the qualities she holds that make her wifey material. Elsewhere, the Billboard-charting R&B artist admits to him giving her butterflies, or in better terms, an unexplainable feeling.

The music video gives off an old-school vibe. From the matching white suit Kissie Lee wears with the choreographers to the overall setting, it emits engagement and fun.

Currently, Kissie Lee is pushing “Sheesh (feat. Lightskin Keisha).”

The song, in a word, is an empowering anthem. And this time around, the songwriter delivers confident bars. Lyrically, “Sheesh” is all about knowing one’s worth and not settling for less. One clever line of Kissie Lee’s goes, “I let him go for no reason/It’s a n*gga for every season.”

Lightskin Keisha adheres to this same notion, dropping influential bars like “Second to none I cannot lose/Go up against me? Who you think he gon’ choose?

The flute-centered trap beat is the perfect backdrop for Kissie Lee and Lightskin Keisha’s direct rhymes. “Sheesh” has amassed 1.3 million views and is No. 15 on urban radios worldwide. You can find this single on her new EP.

About Kissie Lee:

Kissie Lee is originally from Denver, Colorado. Sometime after, she moved to Atlanta and created a distinctive R&B style. The singer rose to success following her performance during KeKe Wyatt’s tour. It was there that the Lady of Soul discovered her. Since then, Kissie Lee has written songs for Sammie, Tiny Harris, The OMG Girlz, Jacob Latimore, and Jacquees.

Make sure to stream “My Love” and “Sheesh (feat. Lightskin Keisha).”
