Gayle King Does Exclusive Interview With Azriel Clary
Gayle King sat down for an exclusive interview with Clary, a survivor and former live-in girlfriend of R. Kelly. Clary was the key witness in the trial that recently led to the conviction of R. Kelly. The 54-year-old singer is currently awaiting his sentencing and faces life in prison for sex trafficking and racketeering. In her first interview since the trial, the 23-year-old opened up about her previous relationship. She also talked about how she felt having to testify against Kelly during the trial.
Azriel Clary Says That It Was All A Lie
King first interviewed Clary in 2019. At that time, she was joined by Jocelyn Savage, who is also a former live-in girlfriend of Kelly’s. Both of the young ladies had been living with R. Kelly for five years and defended him. Clary was the most vocal of the two when it came to defending Kelly. However, she returned for this interview, revealing that everything she had said previously was a lie. Clary and Savage were coached by R. Kelly himself. He told them what to say and how to say it. Kelly made both of the young ladies practice every day for the interview. Clary told King that he even celebrated the interview’s outcome afterwards, telling the ladies that they had done amazing.
Azriel Clary Leaves Kelly’s Condo and Gets Into Brawl with Savage
Clary revealed that seven months after her first interview with King in 2019, she decided to leave the condo she shared with Kelly and Savage. I felt “lost and invisible, giving someone that power over me.” On January 8, 2020, Clary was at the condo at the time that Savage returned to retrieve a few items, including Kelly’s Grammys. Not long after her she arrived, the shouting had begun between the two. In the video, Clary accused Savage of sleeping with her while she was a minor. Savage then attacked her.

Savage Arrested For Assaulting Clary
The police were called to the scene. Savage was then arrested and charged with misdemeanor domestic battery. Clary accused Savage of hitting and kicking her, although Savage denied it. The incident was caught on video. Clary suffered injuries to the face and was treated at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Savage was released the next day from police custody on a written promise to appear in court on her next scheduled court date.
Clary Reveals the Truth
Clary met Kelly when she was 17 years old. That was the time that he’d begun to abuse her. During the trial, Clary testified that Kelly abused her verbally and physically. The details of the abuse were very graphic. Clary revealed that having to relive those moments in court was disturbing. However, a piece of her was happy because she felt like Kelly no longer had control over her.
“I’m Very Happy to Be Back”
King told Clary that their interview felt like a full-circle moment. King commended Clary for wanting to come back and wanting people to see who she really was. Clary said that she thought it was very important for her to take accountability for her actions and let others know that “it is OK to reevaluate your life. It is OK to change your mind. You are never too old to wake up and say, hey, I thought that this was good for me, but it’s actually not. It is OK to apologize and forgive yourself.”
Kelly Awaits Sentencing
On Monday, September 27, 2021, Kelly was found guilty on all charges and was convicted of sex trafficking and racketeering. Kelly’s attorney expressed his disappointment in the verdict and said that he plans on appealing it. Kelly made a statement thanking his supporters and letting them know that he’ll continue to fight for his freedom.
