Top Ten Cultural Films Proving Hip Hop Artists Can Act Too

There was a time when Hip hop and Hollywood were seen as two separate lanes. The idea was preposterous when hip-hop/rap artists expressed a desire to cross over to Hollywood. Those who dared cross the lane were perceived to be inauthentic and mocked for their inability to choose one route and stick to it. The only movies that featured hip-hop and rap artists taken seriously were those constructed around the art form, such as Wild Style (1982) and Beat Street (1984). As the progression of our material world has proven, one never knows how great something can be until it’s done. And over time, artists have demonstrated that hip hop artist in Hollywood is hardly a joke. Talent is rarely linear. More often, genuine artists possess a multitude of skills.

Top Ten: From Hip-Hop to Hollywood Films

While many hip-hop artists have shown top-caliber skills in acting, others failed miserably, leading many to wonder why hip-hop/rap artists didn’t stay in their lane. However, this is life, and we must take the good with the bad. So here is a list of movies starring hip-hop/rap artists who nailed their performance to those that will forever live in infamy.

#10 Snoop/Method Man Soul Plane

The number ten spot for movies featuring a hip hop/rap artist goes to Soul Plane. Soul Plane was a film that premiered in 2004. The hour and 26-minute comedy about an airline owned and staffed by African Americans featured artists Snoop Dogg and Method Man. Other notable comedians in the industry rounded out the cast. One can argue Snoop played his role to perfection. The Dogg Father did what he did the best play himself. His smooth, laid-back demeanor as Captain Mack was his signature. Snoop has more than learned how to use his persona in Hollywood to his advantage. As Highsnobiety notes,

” Though Snoop has 163 acting credits, most of those appearances can be viewed as extensions of his brand. Often, he plays himself.”

Nevertheless, despite the hilarity, Soul Plane was not Oscar-worthy material, so it rests in the number ten spot.

# 9 Will Smith Wild Wild West

Undoubtedly, Will Smith has become recognized as one of the most versatile in the industry. Will has been a trailblazer in many instances. But for those who do and do not remember, one of Smith’s first serious roles was Six Degrees of Separation (1993). While it was one of the first instances that Will was able to exercise his acting chops on the silver screen, the most memorable of his earlier works was Wild Wild West. The 1999 film departed from his earlier drama and featured him in the lead role. Unfortunately, Wild Wild West was also one of his worst films to date and one he has too regretted. Smith told the Hollywood Reporter in a 2021 interview, “Wild Wild West is a thorn in my side.” Unfortunately, the bubblegum western came off as a farce. However, Smith lived it down and became one of the most prominent hip-hop artists turned actors. Good thing Smith’s entire career wasn’t predicated on this film.

#8 Big Boi & Andre 3000 Idlewild

The number eight spot goes to Idlewild, starring members of Outkast Big Boi and Andre 3000. Idlewild centered on small-town life in the deep south during the era of prohibition. But on a deeper level, the film explored the relationship between two friends traversing that terrain dealing with love, expectations, friends, and the come up from different perspectives. While a low-key movie compared to most, Idlewild allowed Big Boi and Andre to display the full range of their talents, proving that just as on stage, their flare and creativity were suited for more than the sound booth.

# 7 Full Cast Carmen Hip Hopera

Carmen Hip Hopera is one of the lesser known movies; however, it is one of the best revisioning of a classic film starring a predominantly hip-hop cast. Until Carmen Hip Hopera, few films boasted a primary hip-hop cast, let alone used the performer to recreate a classic movie for a wider audience. This film was a 2001 offering directed by Robert Townsend. Yasiin Bey (Mos Def), Rah Digga, Wyclef Jean, Da Brat, Jermaine Dupri, Shad Moss (Bow Wow), Beyonce, and Mekhi Phifer made up the cast. Impressively this group of talented performers was able to reshape the story of Carmen into a hip-hop work of art, displaying not only their acting talent but also their musical talent.

#6 Tupac Shakur – Juice

Juice takes the number six spot. This 1992 film is one of the best cultural films to be produced. Tupac Shakur, who played the role of Bishop, a no-nonsense dealer in the 1990s street of New York, proved that rappers could be serious actors. Tupac’s delivery was on point, and his poise was unmatchable. With this performance, it was undeniable that Tupac could effortlessly move through both worlds. Of relative importance was what the film did for the perception of hip-hop overall. As Independent notes,

“Juice was equally crucial for showing how uniquely enmeshed movie and rap stardom could become. “

#5 Kid n Play House Party

House party is hands down a hip-hop cult classic. Hip hop artist Kid n Play did their thing in the 1990 iconic comedy, making it one of the most memorable films. While neither Kid nor Play’s performances were Oscar-worthy, their performances were authentic. The chemistry was unforgettable, with Martin Lawrence, Tisha Campbell, A.J. Johnson, and Robin Harris rounding out the cast. The culture loved it, accepting the film for what it was, an iconic moment in cinematic history celebrating hip-hop on the silver screen. And the acting wasn’t half-bad.

#4 Queen Latifah –Set it Off

Set it Off falls in the top five movies starring a hip-hop artist. Set it off premiered in 1996, and it was fire. Queen Latifah showed the world how it was done. Her performance, along with the performances of the other three leading ladies, was noteworthy. No one could doubt whether each poured their essence into the characters of Stony, Cleo, Frankie, and Tisean because It showed. These women were as authentic and touchable as any. In fact, it was difficult to tell the character apart from the actor. And if it hadn’t been obvious before now, it was plain that Queen had what it takes to make it big in Hollywood. As a testament to her talent, according to Highsnobiety

“With almost one hundred acting credits and nearly fifty producing credits to her name, Queen Latifah is now a Hollywood titan.”

# 3 Tupac Shakur Poetic Justice

While Tupac has been mentioned before, he again gains mention for his role in the cultural favorite, Poetic Justice.  This 1993 John Singleton film wherein Tupac Shakur played the character of Lucky. This film, which premiered only a year after Juice, depicted Pac differently. In Poetic Justice, Tupac played the love interest of none other than Janet Jackson. While he remained rough around the edges, the character of Lucky depicted a man gentler in nature, a vast difference from Bishop. Poetic Justice was demonstrative of Pac’s range. If no one else had proved that rap artists could act, he did.

#2 Ice Cube –Friday

Friday is iconic. Ice Cube and Chris Tucker created a brand of magic on film that can’t be duplicated. This cultural favorite is arguably one of the most quoted films in hip-hop culture. While the film was pure comedy, Cube and Tucker hit every cue. Given what is known of Ice Cube, he is one of the few rap artists other than Tupac and Will Smith who have proven that some hip-hop artists could also dominate Hollywood.

#1 Ice Cube –Boyz N the Hood

The number one movie is none other than Singleton’s classic Boys N The Hood. This 1991 Drama cemented Ice Cube as a noteworthy actor. Cube took his place amongst some of the best in the business Angela Basset, Laurence Fishburne, Morris Chestnut, and Cuba Gooding Jr. He demonstrated he was up to the task. And now, according to Highsnobiety, “Ice Cube has over 60 acting credits to his name spanning almost thirty years.” With that in mind, it is more than sure Boyz n The Hood proved that if no other rapper in the business could carry a role, Ice Cube could.

Hip Hop/ Rap Artist in Hollywood Are No Joke

Many more movies spotlight hip hop/rap artists, highlighting their talents beyond the mic. Although this list is nowhere near exhaustive, it is more than enough to confirm that hip-hop artists in Hollywood are legit, even in films that fall lower on the tier. But, of course, proper judgment can only be predicated on individual merit alone.

Cordozar Calvin Broadus (Snoop) Shares Insight on Crypto Winter

Those aware of Cordozar Broadus’s (Snoop’s) market moves understand he is a strategic investor. He seems to have a 20/20 vision when making moves with his money. Snoop’s brands and ventures provide the proof. Broadus is a visionary, thought leader, and master strategist with a net worth of $150million. And recently, Broadus (Snoop), who has significant investments in the crypto market, shared some insight on the current downturn referred to as Crypto Winter.

 What is Crypto Winter?

Crypto winter is a sustained period of depression in the crypto market. As CNBC delineates,“crypto Winter is when crypto prices fall and stay low for an extended period.”

And sources indicate this downturn has been a long time in the making. According to a Forbes article,

“Since November 2021, the crypto market has dropped 60%—drastically falling from $3 trillion to less than $1 trillion.”

What Does That Mean?

Drops such as this trigger investors to sell which depresses the market further. Fundamentally those who hold crypto are experiencing significant losses. Snoop was an earlier investor in the crypto market. Furthermore, he continues to maintain sizable assets. So the downturn also has him feeling the pinch. To give a clearer picture, Snoop, the owner of a plot in the Sandbox [metaverse], had 5,000 early access passes (via Block Chain Technology) on the market. CNBC reported,

“The sale has generated nearly $700,000 — a significant haircut from the $1.7 million it had generated earlier in the year.”

Undoubtedly, the stakes are high. However, Snoop’s seat at the table is what earns him the credibility to provide insight worth listening to.

Why Is Crypto Winter Occurring?

All markets have cycles. The individual’s stock ties into the broader economy. Thus economic fluctuations are felt throughout all markets. Currently, the US is undergoing a significant inflationary period. This also significantly impacts crypto investors. Forbes reports that “macroeconomic and geopolitical turmoil” affect the economy.

Additionally, events surrounding two significant players, Terra and Celsius, in the crypto market didn’t help. And as another source put it, the market volatility also ties heavily to word of mouth. And bad news travels fast.

Cordozar Broadus’s (AKA Snoop) Market Strategist

Broadus being the market-moving strategist he is, is holding steady. As a bonus, the Doggfather took the time to give insight into the current downturn. According to Snoop, what the crypto market is experiencing is not new. In fact, what’s happening in this market mirrors historical occurrences in other markets. As Snoop also told CNBC

“Every great industry has a downfall. There’s been a depression in every industry you can look at … alcohol, tobacco, clothing, food; every industry you can imagine.”

And he is correct.

Cordozar Broadus’s Position

He is holding for a turnaround. Furthermore, he has a tremendous amount of faith in what’s up ahead. In his words,

This [crypto winter] weeded out all the people who weren’t supposed to be in the space and were abusing the opportunities. Now it’s going to bring on great business, and moving forward, when the market comes back, there will only be great things to pick and choose from.

That’s quite a bit of insight. Snoop’s poker stance says a lot because he and his son are major players with a sizable stake.

No one can predict if Cordozar Broadus is on the money. However, all investments come with risk. And one cannot assume significant gains without some risk, and Snoop knows that. So given his success in several markets thus far, it is difficult to hedge a bet against that. But we won’t honestly know until we know. Until then, FM Hip Hop will keep tabs.

Snoop Dogg Shares Personal Memory of Fainting At Tupac’s Bedside

Snoop’s transparency is noteworthy. The openness and honesty with which he handles his affairs have earned him massive respect in the industry. So, it was no surprise when Snoop recently shared a deeply personal and moving experience at the bedside of his friend and collaborator, Tupac Shakur.

Snoop and Pac

Few hip-hop fans aren’t aware of the bond Shakur and Snoop shared. And in most hip-hop circles, when the discussion turns to legends in the industry, Shakur and Snoop’s names are two who rarely go without mention, and for a good reason.

Both lent their undeniable talent to the industry repping the West Coast. They both held it down as label mates on Death Row and collaborators. They made waves with the single “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted from the “All Eyez on Me” album. But, the relationship was a lot deeper than collaborators. However, sometimes all people remember is the strife. And Pac and Snoop’s strife was also no secret. According to Snoop, the two were drifting in two different directions. A lot of it was due to artistic differences. Thankfully disagreements don’t wholly define relationships.

Snoop and Pac: More than Collaborators

Despite what some may think, Snoop had a deep respect for Pac. In fact, in Snoop’s book, Pac’s loss was profound and one of the toughest losses on the West Coast scene. When asked about West Coast rappers and the biggest losses in a recent interview, Snoop responded with Nipsey Hussle, Nate Dogg, and Tupac Shakur  Why? Because they left this world too early, and he believed that they had so much more to accomplish.

Undoubtedly that is a truth with which few will disagree.

Snoop Opens Up A Little More

The mention of Pac’s relevance to rap was not the only thing the artist had to share. Snoop also opened up about the emotional impact of seeing Tupac in the hospital before his death. According to Snoop, seeing Pac lying in the hospital bed evoked a strong emotional response: he fainted. In Snoop’s recollection of seeing Tupac, this is what he said,

“He got tubes in him, and it’s like, when I walked in, I could just feel like he wasn’t even there, and I fainted.

And it’s not hard to see why.

The Unexpected

That is the way a real friend and brother reacts to the unexpected. And according to Snoop, seeing Pac like that was a shock. In the Doggfather’s words, he had spoken with Suge before seeing Pac; He went to the hospital with reassurance. As noted in the interview,

The talk left Snoop and Co. believing that Tupac was on his way to a quick recovery.

However, that was not so.

True Brotherhood

Although both had experienced a falling out, they were still like brothers. The response of Pac’s mother says everything.

“My baby ain’t never seen you weak. I don’t want you to be weak in front of him. You go in the bathroom and fix yourself up and you go back in there and you talk to him, and you tell him how you feel.”

At a time when Pac’s mother was also grieving, she picked Snoop up and turned his thoughts back to what was necessary.

Afeni Shakur’s Push

At the time, Snoop needed to say goodbye to his friend, his brother.  Afeni’s push gave him the strength to say what he needed to say to Pac as he lay dying. According to Snoop,

She gave us a moment for me to say some things to him, as far as how much I love him, but I knew that that was gonna be my last time speaking with him.

Sometimes few know the whole story. One thing is sure any misgivings people may have had about how Snoop’s felt about Pac, this revelation clears it up. True respect and brotherhood supersede tiffs. Disagreements don’t define the totality of relationships; true brotherhood does.

Snoop’s second album of 2021 follows “From tha Streets 2 tha Suites”, which he released in April.

“So many styles of music, it breaks the algorithm. Right now, the algorithm is telling us you have to rap this way, you have to sound this way, but they’re not telling you how it’s supposed to feel. My algorithm is going to give you a feeling, not a sound,” Snoop says. While he’s been busy in promoting the album release, he dropped the official video for Go To War which features California’s own, Blxst.

Dr. Dre Reportedly Making New Music for Upcoming ‘Grand Theft Auto’ Game

Back in 2015, Dr. Dre’s long-anticipated third album, Compton, was released alongside the N.W.A. biopic  “Straight Outta Compton,” and it appears that his next project will yet again be linked to another blockbuster media franchise. It’s only fitting that longtime Dre collaborator Snoop Dogg should deliver some of the most important news of the day. Dr. Dre reportedly is working on new music for a future Grand Theft Auto game, according to Snoop.

Snoop Dogg announced the news on the Rolling Stone Music Now Podcast as a guest. Snoop Dogg said in an episode set to air on Friday, “I do know [Dr. Dre] is in the studio… I do know he’s making great f***ing music. And some of his music is connected to the GTA game that’s coming out. So I think that that will be the way that his music will be released, through the GTA video game.”

Snoop did not specify which Grand Theft Auto game Dr. Dre is composing music for, but Rockstar Games is currently working on two new installments in the storied franchise. On November 11, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy (which includes remastered versions of GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas) will be released, followed by an “expanded and enhanced” next-gen edition of GTA V (which already has an appearance by Dre) in March 2022. In 2005’s ‘Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas’, Dr. Dre was featured on the radio stations, however, those were previously released tracks.

The Aftermath Takeover is Imminent

Both albums are set to be released in February, just in time for Dr. Dre’s appearance at the Super Bowl LVI halftime show alongside Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and Mary J. Blige. There are plenty of other reasons to anticipate Dr. Dre’s comeback. Flavor Flav of Public Enemy claimed in August that Dre’s next album is “getting ready to come out” featuring a guest appearance from him, while DJ Battlecat of the West Coast hinted at new Dre music arriving in December.

Meanwhile, Snoop Dogg is preparing to release The Algorithm, his new album, on November 12. The collection CD will feature Busta Rhymes, Jadakiss, Mary J. Blige, Method Man, Redman, Benny The Butcher, Fabolous, Dave East, and others, and will mark Snoop’s debut on Def Jam, where he was named an executive earlier this year. Aftermath’s anticipated “takeover” appears to begin with The Algorithm, with new albums from Kendrick Lamar, Xzibit, and Mt. Rushmore — the West Coast supergroup made up of Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Too $hort, and E-40 — to follow.

#FM Trends: Hasbro Toys Buys Death Row Records

Say What?? Hasbro Toys Purchases Death Row Records!

This might be the most absurd article ever. A kid friendly toy company buys a “gangsta rap catalog”. Apart of a $4B deal, Death Row was a throw in as Hasbro bought British company Entertainment One. Weirdly enough, Entertainment One produces animated kids shows like “Peppa Pig” and “PJ Masks”. It also owned the label. Entertainment One acquired the label in 2013 for $280 Million. Hasbro got one of the most iconic music label ever in a throw-in with some cartoons. Wow!

Death Row Records: The Mighty have Fallen

Death Row had Dr.Dre, Tupac, Snoop Dogg, The D.O.C, Nate Dogg and many more. Suge Knight was the CEO and literally the boogieman of hip hop. They controlled a genre of music with classic songs and albums. Doggystyle from Snoop, The Chronic from Dr.Dre, and All Eyez On Me from 2Pac are legendary albums. The death of 2pac and the departures of Snoop and Dre left a void in the label. Suge would run into financial and legal problems. The label would file for bankruptcy in 2006. Then it would be auctioned off to WIDEawake Entertainment for $18 Million in 2009.

The Legacy of Death Row Records

The impact of the label is still being felt today. Dr. Dre is one of the most wealthy men in hip hop today.  Snoop Dogg is a legend, who has aged gracefully. 2pac is looked as a mythological figure. He is revered in hip hop today. Countless documentaries and interviews are always about the late rapper. Suge Knight as well has been featured in many media productions about the highs and lows of Death Row. Bad Boy, Ruff Ryders, Murder Inc. and etc., can all have anniversary concerts and reunions to relive their glory days. Death Row just gets sold and passed on and now its owned by the company that made Mr. Potato Head.

#CherryJuice: Young Buck Could Be Facing Jail Time

Young Buck Uses Someone Else’s Pee During Drug Test

Young Buck is in serious trouble with the authorities. He is facing serious jail time for using someone else’s pee during a drug test.
