The social networking app TikTok has published a list of the top ten songs of 2021.

How an app changed the game

From a small niche platform to a massive pop-culture hub, TikTok has come a long way since its inception in September 2016. Eventually, with over a billion users producing content every day, it’s clear the trendy app has officially taken over.

TikTok also covers subcultures ranging from social justice to fashion, film to photography, and memes sprinkled in between. But by far, TikTok’s most notable influence is on the song charts.

TikTok songs from less significant acts like ‘Bundles’ and ‘Just for me’ have eventually become viral hits overnight by popular creators using a sound bite for a trend or dance. Apparently, as the trend gets shared and replicated by TikTok’s colossal user base, people seek out the entire track, and it organically gains chart success.

Tiktok has also successfully transformed the music industry and how we think about consuming songs. It’s easier than it’s ever been for new artists to break into the scene, and music buffs to come across a new favorite.

TikTok revealed its top ten list of songs in the U.S, in addition to the top five global hits.

Justin Timberlake Receives Backlash After Janet Jackson Super Bowl Documentary Premieres

Justin Timberlake is once again facing backlash over what happened to Janet Jackson at their 2004 Super Bowl Halftime Show.

In the latest New York Times documentary, Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson, fans and viewers got a clear picture of Jackson’s amazing career leading up to one of the biggest controversies in music history. Although there were no big reveals, the documentary does paint a vivid picture. It covers how the culture reacted to the brief wardrobe malfunction that exposed Jackson’s nipple on primetime TV, and how it changed the entertainment industry forever.

In the new documentary, it’s suggested that only three people know what happened leading up to the halftime show. Those three are Jackson, Timberlake, and her costume designer. The three spoke alone before the performance without any producers present.

The Criticism of Justin Timberlake

Following the release of the Framing Britney Spears documentary in February, Timberlake not only received criticism for his actions against his former pop star girlfriend but against Jackson as well. That behavior is once again highlighted in Malfunction, which shows Timberlake’s post-performance interview in stark contrast with his apologetic statements after the fact. Eventually, he circles back to joking about the incident years later.

Since both documentaries aired, social media made sure to voice their opinions on Justin Timberlake.

Following the original criticism in February, Timberlake apologized to Jackson and Spears in a lengthy Instagram post.

“I am deeply sorry for the times in my life where my actions contributed to the problem, where I spoke out of turn, or did not speak up for what was right,” he wrote on Instagram nearly 20 years after the fallout of his relationship with Spears and 17 years after the Super Bowl moment. “I understand that I fell short in these moments and in many others”, he continued. “And benefited from a system that condones misogyny and racism.”

Janet Jackson did not respond publicly to Timberlake’s apology.  Moreover, she was not interviewed for Malfunction. However, she will discuss the incident in a two-part, four-hour documentary that will air in 2022 titled, Janet.

Kendrick Lamar possible album on the way- Top Dawg boss teases release

“THE WAIT IS OVAH!!!”

Fans are speculating that a new Kendrick Lamar album could be in the works following a post from Top Dawg Entertainment boss Anthony Tiffith.

In a cryptic post, shared on social media this past Wednesday, it wrote “THE WAIT IS OVAH!!!” along with a teaser video of a ‘loading’ bar. At the end of the clip, the date May 7 2021 appeared.

Kendrick Lamar’s Award-winning album DAMN was released over four years ago, and fans have been anxiously awaiting a follow-up album ever since. Although there have been hints that Lamar has been working on his next project, the team hasn’t said a word about a release date for his specifically.

Twitter was split between those who were hopeful about the possible release and some who did not want to get their hopes too high. It didn’t take long for people to start expressing their excitement about the announcement.

Lamar was due to headline Glastonbury this year, giving even more reason to believe he might have a new album to be released in summer.

However, SZA’s fans are also hoping that she is the artist that has a new album on the way.

In an interview with Cosmopolitan earlier this year, she said that the follow-up to her 2017 album Ctrl would be out this year.

“This album is going to be the s*** that made me feel something in my (heart and gut),” she said.

“That’s what’s going to go on the album. I’m making all different types of s*** every day from different places in my spirit.”

Whichever artist drops a project, it’s sure to be a hit. Stay tuned to see what TDE has in store.

Instagram Removes Number of “Likes” Displayed

Since Instagram was first stepped on the scene in 2010, one of the app’s success on the platform has been measured mainly by the number of likes received per post. Although many have criticized the likes factor, the number of Instagram likes has remained an important objective for many users.

This past Tuesday, Instagram mistakenly hid the amount of like counts on a post of many users. And people weren’t happy about it. Instead of the text showing an exact number of likes the post received, users were shown the post were liked by a “named account and others.” 

This change affected everyone in users’ feeds, so they couldn’t see how many likes other people’s Instagram posts got.

“We unintentionally added more people to the test today, which was a bug — we’re fixing this issue and restoring like counts to those people as soon as possible,” a spokesperson told CNN.

Instagram began testing out hiding likes in July 2019 with Australia, Canada, Italy, Japan, and New Zealand. Many users have also spoken out, saying that they haven’t been able to see their likes in over a year. Fortunately, they don’t mind the switch up because Instagram has been obsessed with getting lots of follows. 

However, others who use social media for their brand and work were unhappy with the unexpected change.

 Accounts that monetized off of engagement weren’t thrilled. Still, the CEO of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, wanted people to know that Instagram users’ well-being was more important to the social media platform. “We will make decisions that hurt the business if they help people’s well-being and health.”

Since yesterday, the issue has been resolved, and likes are showing again on Instagram.

North West Goes Viral For Painting

North West had social media in an uproar. On Monday, Feb 8th, Kim Kardashian posted a very impressive painting to her Instagram story captioned “My little artist North.” Unfortunately, Twitter had a lot to say.

Some people said her artistic talent has to do with the fact that she’s Kanye West’s daughter, while others claimed that it was impossible for a seven-year-old to paint the very professional looking painting. However, a Twitter user shared a TikTok that proves North really did paint the picture, and it was just a project in her art class. The teacher’s daughter came forward with the facts and showed the exact painting her mother taught her when she was also seven years old.

“I actually can’t believe right now that I am being put in the position where I am probably one of the only people in the world who has evidence to prove that Kim is not lying,” she said

Kim wasn’t here for it either, and in Instagram Stories, she had a very clear message for her daughter’s critics. Check out how she clapped back here.

Nonetheless, there is no doubt that North West is a talented little girl. Creativity runs in her blood as Kanye started taking art classes at just four years old. See what painting sparked this social media uproar below.

#HipHop4Her: 3 Ways to Make Money on Social Media! | #HipHop4her

This summer, I decided to take a hiatus from social media which has honestly been one of the best decisions i’ve made in my adult life thus far.  I could no longer  torture myself by means of comparison. It was becoming sickening and confidence crushing to scroll down my timeline to only be overwhelmed by the site of my followers’ exclusive trips to Jamaica or fancy dinners with their celebrity “friends” while I was home writing about the celebrities they were dining with. In the midst of my frustration, I decided that enough was enough and now was the time to get even. How does one compete with someone’s highlight reel? Simple, make a highlight reel that surprasses theirs by incorporating authenticity and integrity. Below you will find three quick tips on how to turn your followers into dollars.

The first tip is to self reflect. How many of us confuse our followers as our friends? We think since we know every detail of their life via the information they broadcast on social media that we know our followers personally. To some extent, we do know their likes, dislikes, and friend circle but we’ve never met these people in-person to say we truly know them. Try redirecting the focus from off your followers and onto yourself. What do we know about ourselves from our frequent postage? Personally, I know that I enjoy motivational content whether it be a positive quote or a 15 second video of Eric Thomas screaming “IN ORDER TO HAVE SUCCESS, YOU HAVE TO WANT IT AS BAD AS YOU BREATHE!” I would suggest you stalk yourself to come up with a list of five things you are interested in based off of your current social media content. Once you create your list, you will notice  trends within your interest that you may have not recognized otherwise.

The second tip is to understand the balance between personal posts and business posts. It is perfectly fine to have personal content displayed on your social media, and by personal content, I mean selfies and pictures of yourself on vacation. However, be mindful that you are presenting yourself as a brand, and brands think strategically about what they post. Instead of a selfie, swap that photo out for a full body shot of you slaying in an EXPRESS jumpsuit in the Hamptons. It’s considered a personal picture, because it’s a picture of yourself but it can also be considered a business photo depending on the caption. A good caption would be, “Work hard, play hard.” with the location reading “Hamptons”. Your followers will understand three things from that simple post: you are hardworking, you earned every opportunity given to you, and of course – you can still slay while putting in work.

The third tip is less is always MORE. How many of us have three or more slash marks in our social media bios? I’m guilty of being a filmmaker, entrepreneur, blogger, and radio personality  without realizing i’m only promoting myself as one thing – a jack of all trades. Master being phenomenal at one thing, and with time, you’ll eventually be able to juggle being phenomenal at several other things.
