Funkmaster Flex Unveils DMX’s Unreleased Song

Famed DJ Funkmaster Flex continues to make hip-hop headlines by issuing on-air challenges to industry veterans. However, on top of this, Flex also achieved pretty impressive results. This included the implication that veteran greats such as Ghostface Killah are creating again.

Despite these successes, Flex managed to outdo himself recently. The DJ challenged the ever-busy producer Swizz Beats on a recent show to release previously unreleased DMX songs. Swizz frequently collaborated with the legendary late MC. He even worked on DMX’s final product, the posthumously released album “Exodus.”

How It Started

Flex’s quest for new DMX music began last week when on his September 1st broadcast, a challenge rang across the radio speakers.

Flex stated, “I heard that there are several unreleased, never coming out DMX songs…I challenge you in six days to get me one of those DMX songs…That’s what New York City wants…” the direct nature is fitting with Flex’s other recent challenges. A few short days later, Swizz answered Flex’s call.

Funkmaster Flex graced the world on Friday’s show with a never-before-heard DMX track. The track consists of X’s trademarked aggressive and passionate lyrics laced over the classic beat of “Ain’t No Half-Steppin’.”

Despite rapping over a familiar beat by two of hip-hop’s all-time greats, Big Daddy Kane and Marley Marl, DMX still makes the track his own.

A Hope For DMX’s Future Releases

Funkmaster Flex’s recent challenges have served hardcore hip-hop fans well over the past few months. Many dormant artists promised that new music was coming following these challenges. However, giving the world an unreleased song from an all-star rapper like DMX is a dream come true for many.

DMX’s tragic passing last year left a hole in the culture, but through this, a small piece managed to slip through the cracks. A blessing for all hip-hop fans, and hopefully, this is only the first of many lost songs that will find their way to the public.

Lil Wayne And Pusha-T Are Featured On Alicia Keys’ New Album

Alicia Keys is dropping her new album KEYS this Friday (December 10). Lil Wayne & Pusha-T both have features on Alicia Keys’ new album and other artists like Swae Lee or Khalid. Pusha T & Lil Wayne have ongoing beef that started over a decade ago. Both rappers are on separate songs and completely different sides of the album. Pusha-T is featured on the intro track of Side One titled Plentiful, whereas Lil Wayne is on Side Two, appearing on the song Nat King Cole.

History Of The Lil Wayne & Pusha-T Beef

The beef stems from the early 2000’s era of Hip-Hop. As a member of the rap group Clipse, Pusha-T accused Lil Wayne of biting their fashion style. The group released the song Mr. Me Too featuring Pharrell Williams. Pharrell also had issues with the Cash Money camp at the time over Wayne stealing his clothing style as well, plus Cash Money owing to the legendary producer money over old collaborations from a few years prior.

The song “Mr. Me Too” addresses rappers admiring and stealing their fashion. This was a blatant Pusha-T’s subliminal diss at Lil Wayne. Since then, the two have been trading subtle jabs at each other in their music. The beef stayed subtle until Pusha T’s infamous diss record “Exodus 23:1” in 2012. This record features lines about Cash Money’s terrible business, shots at Drake, and even more. It’s one of my favorite Pusha T records, and arguably one of the best diss songs in recent rap history.

Lil Wayne responded to the record by tweeting out, “Fuck Pusha-T and everybody that love em.” Then, Wayne followed up by dropping the song “Ghoulish,” which featured the line he tweeted out & even more lines towards the Virginia rap veteran. The record is generally seen by myself & other fans as subpar. However, it’s still interesting to see that Wayne even put out a diss record in response. In most cases, the more prominent artist (Lil Wayne) can simply ignore the smaller one (Pusha-T).

Current Status Of The Beef

Now that Lil Wayne & Pusha-T are featured on Alicia Keys’ new album, it seems that both artists either got over or forgot about their feud. Lil Wayne appeared on an interview with the podcast “Drink Champs” and stated, “I swear to god I don’t know, man,” in response to a question about where the issues stemmed from. Pusha-T also moved on & mainly only has beef with Wayne’s protégé Drake, which stems from this situation.

Sean Paul Explains Why He’ll Never Do A Verzuz

Verzuz is a friendly competition between two artists. During their time on stage, they either perform or play their smash hits, and ultimately the fans discuss who, they believe, won. Well, it seems like not all musicians are up for taking part in the beloved Instagram series. In fact, Sean Paul has stated that he doesn’t want to participate at all. This news began surfacing after  Beenie Man and Bounty Killer went head to head last year.

Sean Paul was speaking to a radio host at BBC1XTra when he expressed why he wouldn’t be a part of Verzuz. Although others were suggesting that he go against Shaggy, Sean Paul respectfully declined. In October, he explained to another news outlet that Verzuz had a negative influence on dancehall. He also went as far as to refer to its longstanding existence as a “slavery mentality” within the genre’s culture. You can watch the interview here.

He told the BBC1XTra interviewer:

I’m not up for Verzuz. I personally don’t like the platform. I don’t like the name Verzuz. People say is not a clash, and I get that, but it reminds me of a clash, and I’m not up into the clashing ting at all … I’m not scared of it, I just don’t agree with it.”

Sean Paul adds that he lives in a violent society. In his area, music has a huge impact on the community. The dancehall hitmaker doesn’t want to promote any form of negativity within the culture.

“I live in a violent society in Jamaica right now, and the clash ting is to me something that is … I don’t want to say it’s causing the violence in society … but everybody is becoming complacent, so my stance is to fight against that in general.”

“Being somebody who has buried my own friends because of violence, my own brothers because of a violent situation … I don’t even get the time to mourn, you know. I go back into studios and hear the same lyrics, I go into the dance, and I hear the same lyrics. It reminds me exactly of what happened to my bredrin – 9 shots! And I’ve had not just one person but many … this is my family here,” he added.

We sure do hope Sean Paul changes his mind. With hits like “I’m Still In Love With You” and “Temperature,” he’s bound to keep the roof ablaze.

Kanye West Shows Up Big for Passing Of Fellow Rap Legend

Kanye West helped give back to DMX’s family in a big and unique way over the weekend. Through his Yeezy brand, Ye collaborated with the popular fashion brand Balenciaga to help create a T-shirt in honor of DMX, who died earlier this month, just days after suffering a heart attack. The net proceeds from the shirt- retailing at $200 a shirt, will go to the late rapper’s family.

The retro-style long sleeve top features an original DMX portrait on the front with “12.18.1970” printed on the right sleeve, “04.09.2021” printed on the left sleeve and “IN LOVING MEMORY” at the rear of the shirt.

According to Page Six and TMZ, sales for the graphic tee raised $1 million and sold out within 24 hours over the weekend, coinciding with the public memorial for X at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on Sunday afternoon.

West also led his famous  Sunday Service choir to start off the memorial, with multiple songs in front of DMX’s family, including his fiancée Desiree Lindstrom. His children appeared on the stage with the singing group as well.

Tributes have flowed in for the rapper since his death, who was 50 at the time of his passing. Fans and  celebrities such as Snoop Dogg, Nas, Swizz Beatz and the Ruff Ryders family all shared their fondest and favorite moments of DMX.

DMX’s official Instagram account advertised the T-shirt before it sold out as well…

Shoutout to Kanye West for showing some love and respect for his fallen comrade. That’s pretty damn decent.

Swizz Beatz Sends Shots at SNL, Claims ‘Verzuz’ Is Bigger Than ‘SNL’

Fresh off the beloved Isley Brothers vs. Earth, Wind & Fire entry of Verzuz, co-creators Swizz Beatz and Timbaland were giving themselves their flowers as they reflected on how far their creative venture has gone in such a short time.

The two were on Instagram Live discussing the most recent match-up when Timbaland said Verzuz was “the new SNL.” The comment prompted Swizz to correct him, stating Verzuz is bigger than SNL.

“We bigger than that,” he said. “Our numbers beat SNL already. Our numbers is bigger than SNL. That’s not even, like, cap. That’s real talk. It’s already happening.”

It was a bold claim from the prolific producer. And he wasn’t wrong necessarily. While Verzuz isn’t in the variety show/sketch comedy category, the organic music competition show has produced significant ratings. Back in November, Swizz revealed the record-breaking stats for the Gucci Mane and Jeezy battle, stating that “on a minimum level” 9.1 million people watched the showdown.

Ultimately Swizz and Timbo always go back to Verzuz being a celebration of artistry.

“It’s not about, like, the best Verzuz,” Swiss said. “It’s about celebrating the creative. So some nights we gon’ have the Super Bowl, some nights we gon’ have the Pro Bowl, some nights we gon’ have the Rose Bowl. But we’re gon’ have a good time.”

Swizz Beats And Jim Jones Drop “Preach” Visual

Salutations FM Trendsetters!  For the past two months, Ruff Ryders self-proclaimed “One Band ManSwizz Beats been releasing videos from his upcoming “Poison” album.  “Pistol On My Side (P.O.M.S.)” with Lil Wayne, which ended up on his critically acclaimed Carter 5 album,  and “25 Soldiers” with Young Thug, already previewed the heat that the infamous producer has been working on for the past year.  Swizz Beats‘ last album was released 11 years ago.  However, he proves once again that his name is a staple in this rap game.  Over the weekend via Instagram, the Bronx native released snippets of not only a new track but also released the video for a new track off the album, which will be the third in the series of videos dropped.  This time instead of the South, the Ruff Ryder/Full Surface producer went back up top and recruited Harlem’s own Jim Jones for the new heat “Preach“.  What better way to release a hot track than the traditional visual.
