Sony Music Files Suit Against Triller Over Licensing Fees

Sony Music has filed a lawsuit against Triller over copyright infringement and breach of contract. The suit also alleges that Triller stopped paying licensing fees due under their agreement with Sony.

Sony Music allegedly entered into a content distribution agreement with Triller back in 2016. The two companies signed an amended version in December of 2021, but Triller stopped paying the license fees due under the agreement. Sony’s attorney Matthew Oppenheim released a statement on the lawsuit.

“Triller is a sophisticated party that purports to take intellectual property rights seriously when it benefits Triller,” Oppenheim wrote. The complaint went on to accuse Triller of displaying “brazen contempt for the intellectual property rights of Sony Music, its artists, and others.”

According to the complaint, Triller failed to make their monthly payments starting in March 2022. After months of requesting payments, Sony Music notified the social networking service that it was in breach of their contract. The agreement was then terminated on August 8.

Triller responds to Sony Music

However, Sony alleges that Triller continued to offer their artists’ music on the Triller app.  The social network offered its own statement on the lawsuit to The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday.

“We have yet to be served, but from what we’ve seen, this lawsuit from Sony Music grossly mischaracterizes our relationship with them and leans into the bully persona large music labels are often criticized for,” the statement read. The company also says that all Sony music has been removed from their platform.

Meanwhile, Sony criticized Triller for its acquisitions of other platforms while leaving millions in fees unpaid. “During the exact same months that Triller was failing to make licensing payments to Sony Music, it went on a purchasing spree,” the complaint stated. Triller recently acquired platforms such as Julius and Fangage.

The lawsuit is the latest in a string of complaints against Triller. The news drops two weeks after a suit from Timbaland and Swizz Beatz over lack of payment for Verzuz. Triller announced on Monday that it was planning to go public in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Diddy Takes Stance Against Triller Amid Verzuz Lawsuit

Diddy has chosen to stand against Triller after the recent lawsuit by Verzuz creators Timbaland and Swizz Beatz. On Thursday, Diddy argued that the hip hop community should boycott Triller until the suit is settled and fair compensation has been reached. According to reports, Timbo and Swizz claim that Triller owes them $28 million.

Puff went on Instagram to clarify his stance on the lawsuit after mistaking Triller for Verzuz in a previous Live.

“When me and [Jermaine Dupri] were talking about Verzuz, I mistakenly said Verzuz instead of Triller,” he said. “So to clarify it, we’re not f*****g with Triller until they take care of Swizz and Tim for Verzuz.”

Diddy went on to repeat the message: “Nobody f***s with Triller until they take care of Tim and Swizz because Tim and Swizz is Verzuz. Am I being clear?”

Diddy’s announcement came after a conversation with Jermaine Dupri on the current state of R&B. As a result, the two agreed to have a song-for-song battle that wouldn’t be associated with Verzuz so that Triller could not capitalize from the matchup.

“Since we ain’t f*****g with Verzuz no more ’cause they f*****g around with our boys, we don’t need to be going against each other,” Puff said. “let’s come together and do that Bad Boy, So So Def in Atlanta. It ain’t no Verzuz, it’s just hit for hit.”

No definitive date has been set for the showdown between Diddy and JD.

The lawsuit between Triller and Verzuz

As mentioned, Swizz Beatz and Timbaland have filed a $28 million suit against Triller. Per TMZthe two Hip Hop legends claim that the video-sharing service failed to uphold the financial end of their deal. Court documents show that Triller defaulted after only two payments.

The Genesis of Verzuz

Swizz and Timbo started Verzuz in 2020 as a way to lighten the mood during quarantine. In March 2021, Triller acquired Verzuz and incorporated it into the Triller Network. As part of the deal, the two producers joined Triller to oversee its music department.

Triller responded to the accusations, claiming that the two have collected nearly $50 million in cash from the sale. News of the lawsuit broke on Tuesday night, with no word on if it will proceed to court.

DMX Tribute Headlined By Young Daughter

DMX Tribute: 8-year-old Daughter Performs

A DMX tribute concert featuring his 8-year-old daughter Sonovah Hillman Jr. Hillman brought down the house with her renditions of “Slipin” and “Rough Riders’ Anthem”.

The show was held at the Wildcatter Saloon in Katy, Texas, where DMX was originally scheduled to perform before his untimely death. The venue decided that holding the concert on the day X was scheduled to perform would be a fitting tribute to the late artist.

Sonovah Has Talent

The young performer first appeared on the radar when she was featured on social media, rapping a creative tribute to her father at a memorial in New York City.

Hillman is following in her father’s footsteps. She recently released the singles, “Tik Tok Kid” and “I Hate Zoom” shortly before her father’s passing. DMX had been extremely supportive of her efforts.

Remembering DMX

The New York rapper passed away in April from a heart attack. He was a prolific artist, and a longtime fixture in the entertainment industry. His loss has been felt deeply, but hopefully his memory will live on through his young daughter.

Swizz Beats produced his posthumous LP, Exodus, which was released by Def Jam on May 28th.

‘Versuz’ Announces Exciting New Battles & Teases A Rematch

While the world was in quarantine, many trends and social media apps increased in popularity. I mean, what is there to use when you must avoid the outside world in 2020? The internet. The internet was the only tool that kept many people connected to others around them. Even if it was virtually, the internet was pretty much a haven. Not only did it provide information regarding covid but also comedic and entertainment purposes. Tik-Tok and Verzuz had a massive impact on social media.

Many people thought Verzuz started last year. But in actuality, Verzuz was created in 2017, which led to a producer battle during Hot 97 Summer Jam in 2018. Over time Swizz Beatz and Timbaland would battle each other and other producers until Verzuz picked up its popularity in 2020. Verzuz became a televised event, although it was on social media. Every week people look forward to these matches. Teddy Riley versus Baby Face, Keyshia Cole versus Ashanti, Patti Labelle versus Glady’s night, Monica versus Brandy, and let’s not forget to mention the awkward but impressive Gucci Mane versus Jeezy. I thought that Verzuz was going to end up at a funeral. Whew, Thank God it didn’t.

The inventors also planned a plethora of exciting events to come.
Since the legendary Raekwon versus Ghostface Killah, Swizz and Timberland have announced two events and a blurred rematch that has everyone excited. One battle is Earth, Wind, and Fire versus the Isley Brothers and 420: Method Man versus Redman. Honestly, I was shocked hearing that announcement, and I bet you are too.

In addition to sponsorships, including Ciroc, Doritos, and Apple Music, Verzuz receives alit support. Since the Raekwon versus Ghostface Killah battle, Verzuz partneres with Thriller. Verzuz is here for the long run.

5 Verzuz Battles We Need To See

Prez Tells Us The 5 Verzuz Battles We Need ASAP!

We absolutely love the Verzuz battles. Swizz Beatz and Timbaland started something majestic.  Everyone seems to be throwing out names to see who should battle who. So we came out with 5 battles that would be amazing. We had to reach deep into the playlist catalogs for this one.

1. French Montana VS. Wiz Khalifa

Photo via Instagram: @wizkhalifa

Lets start with 2 guys who always have a record in circulation. Wiz gave us the Pittsburgh anthem, Black and Yellow, made us all cry with Charlie Puth on See You Again, and got us buying edibles and vapes with Travis Scott on Bake Sale. French had us riding on East Tremont on  Ain’t Worried Bout Nothin, has a strip club posse cut with Pop That, songs with Drake such as No Stylist and hit with Swae Lee on Unforgettable. Neither one is known for the classic album, but got records to make for an entertaining battle.

2. Asap Ferg VS. Big Sean

Photo via Instagram: @AsapFerg

Two of the most underrated rappers today would make a Verzuz battle. Asap Ferg is one of the most energetic artists of his generation and Big Sean never gets the credit he deserves for how dope he is. They worked with each other on Ferg’s  World is Mine. I would be interested to see what the song placement would be in this battle. That would be the key to victory. Ferg got heavy hitters such as New Level and Work Remix, but Big Sean could counter with Blessings and Marvin & Chardonnay. Swizz and Timbo got to set this one up.

3. T.I. VS. Rick Ross

T.I. vs. 50 Cent is cool, but putting him against Rick Ross is better. This is for the true crown as King of The South. T.I. gave us countless hits and amazing albums such as King, Urban Legend, and Trap Muzik in the 2000s. As T.I. started to get into other ventures, Rick Ross ascended. His first 3 albums are good but 2010’s Teflon Don is where he took off and gave us iconic verses and one of the deepest rap catalogs ever. This battle might need 35 songs instead of 20.

4. Wale VS. J.Cole

Photo via Instagram: @realcoleworld

This one pits one of the most misunderstood artists ever(Wale) against one of the most toxic fan bases ever( J. Cole). The two artists are “friends”, this battle could ease the tensions social media believe they have. Plus this battle is closer than what people think. J Cole might have classics such as Friday Night Lights and 2014 Forest Hills Drive, but Wale can counter with The Album About Nothing, Summer on Sunset, and Ambition. Depending on the song placement, Wale could pull out the “upset”.

5. Missy Elliot VS. Busta Rhymes

Photo via Instagram: @missymisdemeanorelliott

We ending with 2 legends. The battle of the multi-million dollar video budgets. We need to get Missy vs Busta asap. This not for the kids, this is a nostalgic trip for those who miss the 90s. Busta’s 20 is going to be tough to beat with songs such as Dangerous, Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See, Break Ya Neck and features such as Scenario, Ante Up (Remix) and Flava in Your Ear(Remix). Missy’s catalog stacks up well too. She has songs with Aaliyah, hits such as Get Ur Freak On, One Minute Man, and Work ItThis Verzuz Battle would be more of a celebration of icons. Everyone loves Missy Elliot and Busta Rhymes, so them giving us 2 hours of hits and history would be beautiful.

#FM Trends: Rick Ross and Swizz Beatz Team Up for “BIG TYME”

Rick Ross and Swizz Beatz Team Up over Just Blaze’s Production for “BIG TYME”

It is officially Rick Ross season. We have been teased with his next album, “Port of Miami 2” for quite a while. He gave us Green Gucci Suit with Future in 2018. Then he would drop Act a Fool with Wale in June. In May, he would appear on DJ Khaled’s Father of Asahd with Jeezy on “Big Boy Talk.” All these records are fine, but a song with Rozay rapping, Swizz talking and hyping it up, plus you get production from Just Blaze. Any record that got him talking how good life is with Swizz talking sign me up and please drop this album before I leave for Bahamas.

The Many Faces of Rick Ross

Remember when LeBron James was in Miami and we got an MMG album every summer. Those were the days. I remember how barbershops reacted when B.M.F came on the radio and every lost it. Ross has been in the game since I was in high school. I was around 15 when Port of Miami dropped. He has had a legendary career with great collaborations with Drake, Future, Nas, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne and Kanye West. His collaborations with R&B acts such as T-Pain, John Legend, Chris Brown, and Mariah Carey. He launched Meek Mill and Wale into the stratosphere. In many ways, he is an elixir of hip hop. He can make weak songs stand out and good songs legendary. His last effort, Rather You Than Me is a modern masterpiece.

Remembering “Port of Miami”

Port of Miami dropped on August 8th, 2006. I was a month away from junior year of high school. The singles “Hustlin” and “Push It” dominated the summer. Jay-Z and Young Jeezy would jump on the remix of “Hustlin.” Cool & Dre produced the underrated track “Blow”. He got features from Akon, Mario Winans, Lyfe Jennings, Lil Wayne( Best Rapper Alive Lil Wayne) and many more. Listening to this album makes you appreciate Rozay as an artist. Time goes by and we could remember the evolution of him as an artist.
