The controversial New York rapper, Tekashi 69, has conceded in a legal battle involving his 2020 song, “GOOBA.”
Don’t Call It A Comeback
Tekashi 69 has been in the spotlight for his legal woes for quite some time. His reputation was first changed in October 2019 when he took the witness stand against the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods. The Brooklyn rapper subsequently went to prison for 2 years and put out ‘GOOBA’ upon his release in Apr 2020.
The song got Tekashi his first Billboard Streaming Songs chart No 1. It broke records for the most views of a hip hop debut in Youtube history with a whopping 43 million views in 24 hours. Tekashi seems to be a magnet for controversy despite the track’s success.
69 Accused Of Stealing
BEATDEMONS is a producer duo that took the “GUMMO” rapper to court in March last year. The pair alleged 69 took the melody and also the general song structure from their cut “Regular.” Listen to both and see for yourself:
In a bold lawsuit, the two producers demanded all of 69’s profits from the song. It’s unconfirmed exactly how much he made from the record. Still, the track is currently sitting at over 700 million views on Youtube. So it’s safe to say the 25-year-old earned some coin from streaming alone.
The lawyers representing 69 spoke to TMZ back in March. They flippantly dismissed the claim. “The lawsuit is without merit and is another attempt to profit off of Tekashi’s success. We are confident that it will be dismissed,” attorney Lance Lazarro said.
In fact, this is the second accusation the rapper has gotten concerning “Gooba.” In June 2020, Kenyan producer Magix Enga made similar claims of theft.
Lawsuit Closes
Somewhere between then and now, the two opposing legal sides came to a settlement.
Jesse A. Kaplan is the lawyer representing BEATDEMONS. He also made a statement this week addressing the closing of the lawsuit.
“The parties anticipate that the written settlement agreement will be finalized within the next forty-five days,” Kaplan said. “A stipulation of dismissal of the entire case, with a waiver of fees and costs, will be filed shortly thereafter.”Â
It seems 69 has escaped accountability yet again. Do you think the track is not Tekashi’s? Or just a strange coincidence?
