Westside Gunn Reacts To ‘Best Rappers of 2022’ Snubs

Westside Gunn didn’t take kindly to Benny The Butcher and Conway The Machine being among the snubs for the top rappers of 2022. All three artists are related and share a history with the label founded by Westside and Conway, Griselda Records.

Complex Brackets co-host Brian Miller started the controversy on Thursday when he posted his list of the top ten rappers of the year so far. Using “skill, performance and relevance” as his criteria, Miller put Kendrick Lamar at the top spot. Lamar’s latest project, Mr Morale & The Big Steppers has topped charts since its release.

Pusha T, J. Cole, Kodak Black and Boldy James made up the rest of the top five. Vince Staples, Lil Durk, Jack Harlow, Lil Baby and 21 Savage also made the list.

It didn’t take long for Westside Gunn to peep the list. An hour after Miller posted his tweet, Westside Gunn gave his opinion on Benny the Butcher and Conway’s snubs.

“This n***a personally didn’t put  up @BennyBst & and @WHOISCONWAY,” the Buffalo native wrote on Twitter.

Responding to a fan sharing his own confusion at the list, Gunn added, “Click bait duuuuuuuh he knows by not putting them on there [it] will give it the attn it is just like when I just tweeted it, that’s exactly what he wants for the conversation I know for a million f***in fakts this is intentional ain’t that right @bdotTM.”

Benny The Butcher and Conway’s 2022 so far

Putting aside the bias, Benny and Conway have both put in good work in the first half of the year. Despite the ongoing beef with Freddie Gibbs, Benny dropped Tana Talk 4 and earned his first Billboard Hot 100 track thanks to “Johnny P’s Caddy,” which features J.Cole.

Meanwhile, Conway dropped his first project with Shady Records in February, God Don’t Make Mistakes. The LP featured collaborations with Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, T.I Jill Scott and Beanie Sigel.

The Machine joined Westside Gunn in his bemusement at the snubs on Twitter. “This is a great list,” he wrote in B. Dot’s mentions.

However, one artist that didn’t take offense to being omitted was Pusha T. The rapper, whose latest album It’s Almost Dry  topped the Billboard 200 in April, shared Miller’s rankings on his Instagram story. “I’m not mad @bdottm…We only 6 months in, let’s fight…#ItsALmostDry RAOTY easy…”, King Push wrote.

Coincidentally, Conway opened up for Pusha at San Francisco’s Regency Ballroom on Wednesday as part of the It’s Almost Dry Tour.

Westside Gunn Releasing Two New Albums in 2021

Griselda rapper Westside Gunn is releasing two new albums before 2021 ends. He confirmed his intentions in a tweet on July 11.

Westside Gunn for the Culture

Gunn was executive producer for Mach-Hommy’s Pray for Haiti, an album that’s being touted as one of the best of 2021. He also appeared on IDK’s “Red” alongside Jay Electronica and the late MF DOOM.

The Buffalo native has also curated Dave East’s upcoming album, Hoffa. Westside Gunn also has plans to open an art gallery in his hometown. And despite all these projects, he still finds time to be one of the most lyrical rappers in the game right now.

Something is always cooking

This news further solidifies Gunn’s declaration of not retiring. He has managed to churn out solid work consistently, despite the loss of Griselda producer DJ Shay late last year. Fans are already buzzing online about what the Flygod has in store.

No Westside Gunn project stands alone

The untitled projects mark the fifth and sixth studio albums of Gunn’s career. He has already worked with notable producers such as Statik Selektah, The Alchemist, and Roc Marciano. Griselda group members, Conway the Machine, Benny the Butcher and Machine Gun Black have been featured on his previous albums, WHO MADE THE SUNSHINE  and Pray for Paris.

It will be interesting to see who he brings aboard for these two future albums.

DMX’s First Posthumous Single, ‘Hood Blues,’ Feat. Griselda is Out

DMX’s posthumous album, ‘Exodus,’ comes out at midnight.

While our hearts remain heavy from DMX’s untimely passing, our spirits lift upon the release of his new lead single.

This may be a posthumous release, X finished it up right before his passing.  His first solo LP since 2012, the Ruff Ryder detailed that this project has the most features he’s ever had, and he wasn’t kidding.  Every single track on the upcoming album has features, and they’re not just anybody.  Among others, there’s Alicia Keys, Snoop Dogg, The Lox, Lil Wayne, Bono, Nas has two, one of which is with Jay-Z, with Swizz Beats on the boards for all of it.  However, the lead single, ‘Hood Blues,’ featuring the Griselda boys had particularly high anticipation.  Coming out earlier this week, it completely surpassed the generous expectations.

“X the illest, the realest”

Without DMX and the Ruff Ryders, there simply is no Griselda.  Already dominating yet another year in Hip-Hop, Griselda’s appearance on this album is a major deal, and boy did they treat it that way.  The beat is a great atmosphere, a jazzy 70’s type instrumental.  Westside Gunn kicks off the song doing his thing, with notably improved lyricism and his trademark adlibs in the background.  Benny the Butcher, a current leader in the game, continues his streak with a nice dose of quotable lyrics.  While Benny is the lyrical heavyweight, Conway gets the last verse of the three.  Conway, who recently performed on The Tonight Show, has been the hottest of the three lately and his verse proves it; his lyrics, sharp and his flow, cunning.

However, it’s X that we’re here for and he comes seriously correct with the KO at the end.  It’s hard to predict how a 50-year rapper is going to sound but the Dark Man proves that he still had it in him until the very end.  His themes are the same as usual, but feel fresh and refined.  Assuming the same hunger is found throughout the other tracks, it looks like DMX will have yet another classic in his legendary discography.  We just wish he was still here to see how proud it’s gonna make all of us.  RIP DMX forever.

Mach Hommy Set to Release the Anticipated ‘Pray For Haiti’ Album

Few MC’s Are As Elusive and Enigmatic As Mach Hommy

There is little information about the Haitian-American Newark native except for his musical work.  Mach released many low-profile records throughout the past year, but his midnight release boasts major underground attention.  Paying obvious tribute to his roots, the album, titled ‘Pray for Haiti’ is released this week through Griselda Records to honor Haitian Flag Day.

Mach listeners will often compare him to The Alchemist, Earl Sweatshirt, Boldy James, and most fittingly, the Griselda gang.  Helmed by Westside Gunn, Griselda currently monopolizes the current coke rap scene and continues to expand on all fronts.  While all members continue to flourish, Gunn has maintained the most prominence both as an MC and label executive.  No stranger to taking the back seat to let his talent gain attention, Gunn eagerly heralds Hommy’s work.

Having collaborated with them previously, Mach Hommy takes executive production from Gunn to promote the piece.  With Mach being one to avoid social media, Gunn has spent the past few weeks promoting the album all over social media.

The lead single, ‘The Stellar Ray Theory,’ was released earlier this week and is available on streaming now.  The album is 39 minutes with three features from Gunn and one each from Keisha Plum, and Tha God Fahim.  There is also familiar production from frequent Hommy collaborator, Camoflauge Monk, and one track from DJ Green Lantern. With a lack of major name releases at midnight, Hommy might gain some much-deserved attention.  Will you give it a listen?  Here’s the tracklist down below.
