Lizzo Goes Off On Texas Anti Trans Policies And Abortion Laws

It looks like Lizzo had some words for Texas lawmakers Sunday night. The Truth Hurts singer was the keynote speaker at South by Southwest, Austin’s annual cultural and music conference. Using her platform, she criticized the state’s recent policies regarding abortions and transgender people.

Lizzo shared a clip of her interview with Angela Yee discussing the issue on Twitter.

“Who is protecting us from lawmakers’ biases? Your personal beliefs shouldn’t be reflected in the laws that are supposed to protect all Americans,” the caption read. “We have politicized bodies for far too long in this country. It’s time to focus on real issues and mind ya business. Thank u SBSW.”

The video also shared Lizzo saying, “I’m proud to rep Houston, but I’m not proud to rep Texas politics right now.” The Grammy winner’s message garnered huge applause from the audience.

Lizzo addresses state policies

In late February, Texas governor Greg Abbott issued a directive to investigate families who seek gender-affirming care for their children. Additionally, the order also encouraged Texans to report these families to child services for abuse allegations.

However, District Judge Amy Clark Meachum issued a temporary injunction against the directive on Friday. In addition, Lizzo also attacked the state’s abortion laws, which make it illegal to have an abortion after six weeks.

“We got a lotta other things y’all need to be handling instead of y’all being in people’s homes and telling them what to do with their bodies and being all up in their uteruses,” Lizzo said. “The abortion ban is atrocious as well. Mind your business. Stay out of my body.”

Lizzo on self-love

Outside of politics, Lizzo touched on other topics including a new album as well as her self-love journey. The Houston native admitted that self-love did not come easy to her when talking about inspiration.

“It didn’t come easy. It came from a sense of deep loneliness. And it’s like, well if you’re by yourself, make the best of it. Fall in love with yourself. Be inspired by yourself. Big yourself up. And I think once I healed that, whatever that deep wound is maybe I inherited that wound of loneliness and not feeling worthy or lovable, once I did that I was able to see all of these people around me who had been giving me love my entire life.”

Playbook Media Group’s 2nd Annual Women Trailblazer Appreciation Brunch will honor female entertainment and journalism professionals on Sunday, March 26 at Hayaty NYC (103 Avenue A). Hosted by “Love and Hip Hop: New York” star Tara Wallace, the brunch will feature music by DJ Fugi Slim and DJ Furious, with a special performance by singer-songwriter Tayler Green. However, the stars of the power brunch are the six ladies being recognized for their achievements in the industry. Playbook MG will bring their efforts to the forefront as we approach the final week of Women’s History Month.

One of the honorees is Raven Carter, who has worked behind-the-scenes at some of media’s most influential brands. She has crafted original video content for BET, MadameNoire, Bossip, and other sites, and was formerly on the production staff of “The Apprentice,” Fox News, and “The Jerry Springer Show.” Carter is currently a senior producer at Moguldom Media Group, and has increased the visibility of their brands exponentially. Dara Cook, meanwhile, is VH1’s Vice President of Strategic Development. Her career at Viacom began at MTV, where she was a “Total Request Live” writer and producer, and the head writer for the 2007-2013 Video Music Awards, among other roles. The Ivy League graduate was recently commended for being “instrumental to VH1’s record growth” by the network’s president, Chris McCarthy.

In good company with these talented and driven women is Syntyché “Syn” Clarke. The former Big Yard Music and RPM marketing guru is now the Executive Vice President of Irie Jam Media Group Inc. and Caribbean Media Group Inc. The wife and mom also finds time to give back through her Irie Butterfly Foundation and its Irie Kids Summer Program. She is the Vice President of Special Programming at the Newswomen’s Club of New York, as well as an award-winning editor, journalist, and photographer. Her work has appeared in ESSENCE, amNewYork, the New York Daily News, and other major media outlets, and Cunningham is currently the Exclusive Content Manager at Bossip.

Another experienced journalist and exceptional woman in media is KC Orcutt. She covered the Albany music scene for several years before joining The Source Magazine, Beatport, and finally, BET. While Orcutt has secured her dream job, she also contributes to XXL, Billboard, Spotify, and other outlets. Her ambition and love for the arts continue to set her apart from the crowd. The final trailblazer to be honored on Sunday is Minyvonne Burke. Before working as a Digital Content Producer at the New York Daily News, she was a fashion and entertainment reporter at the International Business Times. Her current beats include crime, breaking news, and pop culture.
