Last night, BET honored near-billionaire mogul Diddy with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The segment of the show, dedicated to the  52-year-old,  began with a montage. This montage included old footage of the producer and rapper, and a clip of Jay-Z speaking about his impact on the industry. This led into performances from Jodeci, Mary J. Blige, Lil Kim, Busta Rhymes, and Faith Evans. Blige performed the Diddy produced version of the classic, “I’m Going Down.” Busta Rhymes took to the stage for a slightly remixed version of “Pass The Courvoisier Pt.II.” Diddy hit the stage and performed “I’ll be Missing You” and dedicated it to his ex partner, Kim Porter, who passed away in 2018.

After the medley, hitmaker Babyface came to the stage and talked about Diddy’s dedication to his craft. Ye then came out afterward, face covered, and told a story about how he tried to emulate the rap senior’s production style in his youth. However, some people on social media speculated, saying it wasn’t really him.

Puff, if I never told you, I love you. You’re my brother… At the end of all of it, all we have is love.

By the time the rapper, real name Sean Combs, took to the stage, audience members were already feeling the emotion. He shouted out his mother, Biggie, Bobby Brown, TD Jakes, and his longtime fans. And of course, he shouted out his stomping grounds–New York. He then began preaching about Black capitalism and non-violence.

Diddy’s Long Stint In The Industry

Not only did Diddy, whose career spans three decades, make a mark on music, his fashion brand Sean John was an important cultural marker. Though he sold the brand to GBG in 2016, he bought it back from the brink of bankruptcy for 7.5 million dollars in 2021. At the end of his tribute, he pledged 1 million dollars to his old school Howard and another million to Jackson State University.
