#FMSpotlight: Chicago Rapper DaWeirdo Channels Pain and Loss in His Latest Project

Darrel McKinney is an independent hip-hop artist from Chicago, Illinois. Known as his stage name DaWeirdo, he has a sense of rawness and a unique style of music. His music is based on real-life stories from the hoods of Chicago such as Englewood, where he grew up.

DaWeirdo grew up in a musical family so, music is in his blood. His father, a saxophonist, drummer and, pianist, held jam sessions with his friends in the family’s front room.

Since his early roots, DaWeirdo has been paving the way for himself. He created a music tour called “Stop Teen Violence Music Tour”, performing at Chicago’s inner-city high schools. This lead him to debut on television. DaWeirdo was on BET’s 106 & Park, for a single called “Get it” with R&B artist Lovandre. That gave him huge exposure, and he hasn’t let his foot off the gas since.

With his latest project titled Lillie, DaWeirdo put his pain and recent losses into it. This year, he lost friends due to a mass shooting in Englewood. They were meant to appear in a DaWeirdo music video just two days later. Shortly after, he lost his grandmother.

“The making of everything, it was a dark cloud over me” DaWeirdo confessed. “So, every track on there has a story to tell, and it just means a lot to me.”

With his latest visual out, entitled “Drinking”, DaWeirdo admits that the record is the deepest one on the project for him. It was the first song he did after the tragic events that took place in his life this year. It details how, when dealing with grief, all you want to do is be numb to the pain, and deal with the hurt by drinking.

“During that time, I was really going through it. If you listen to that track, and then listen to the others, you can tell the difference. It’s almost like you can hear me cry in it.” DaWeirdo says.

With a huge following on Instagram as well as creativity and passion behind his music, DaWeirdo is setting himself apart from the typical rap artist. He is proving that he is coming to the top, through his authenticity and execution of his vision as an artist.

Get Back in Your Feelings: Summer Walker Drops New EP!

The Atlanta-born, self-taught, slow groove R&B artist, Summer Walker takes a hit back at music with her recently released EP, “Life On Earth” which exudes a steamy sound of passion, heartache, self-realization, and sexual expression. Overall, Summer Walker is known as a beautiful, ethereal spirit who is publicly judged for her introverted character, yet praised for her serene voice, finger-snapping music, and alternative-punk like demeanor. She has mentioned several times that she is highly inspired by Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, and Erykah Badu: all carefree, unconventional, and eccentric artists in their own realm.

“I been me from day one, I’m not about to start acting different, talking different, treating people different, or looking different.”

After months of debating whether or not Walker was going to continue making music based on personal statements of her prioritizing her mental health, she recently surprised her fans on Instagram. Through several distinctive posts, she shared a preview of her five-track EP including songs, “Let It Go“, “SWV featuring NO1-NOAH“, “My Affection featuring PARTYNEXTDOOR“, “White Tee featuring NO1-NOAH“, and “Deeper“. Moreover, the EP starts off with a slow acoustic R&B melody that insinuates the reflection of a heartbreak. However, the tone slightly switches up in transition to the 2nd song where she ‘bossed up’ and simmered down the beat with a more deep and sensual tempo. Within the two tracks, she goes from singing, “I thought that I was changing you” to “I’m feeling brand new…I like stuntin’ on my friends” (growth!).

Summer Walker’s photoshoot inspired by the 1998 film, “The Player’s Club”.

Furthermore, only 9-months ago, Walker dropped her 18-track debut album, “Over It” produced by American record producer, London on da Track which won her the 2019 BET Soul Train Music Award title for ‘Best New Artist’. London on da Track, best known for music collaborations with ATL rappers, Young Thug and Gunna and also best known as Walker’s love interest, shared a recent Instagram post on how he was, “Glad to help create this masterpiece”.

London mastered his role again in producing another successful Summer Walker project alongside Canadian R&B artist, PARTYNEXTDOOR. You can almost immediately recognize the similarity of the smooth, modern R&B trap-beat production in PARTYNEXTDOOR’s own music through track #3, “My Affection“. It is also noted when Walker ‘modestly’ sampled a part of his lyrics from his P3 trackDon’t Know How” in her song “Deeper“.  NYC-born singer, songwriter, and producer, NO1-NOAH who is featured on two of her most intimately explicit tracks “SWV” and “White Tee”, was also involved in the making of this EP. His production and voice added on a seductive and authentic blend.

A recent Instagram post Summer Walker shared previewing the tracklist for “Life on Earth”.

All in all, this EP is purely an intimate expression of emotions through heartfelt use of lyrics by creatively throwing soulful R&B onto a smooth trap-beat. Although the EP is only 16 minutes long, each song perfectly crafts the entirety of the project. No matter how bold, empathetic, or fragile Walker might come off through her lyrics, each track carries an individual flow. That’s what we love most about her as a versatile R&B artist.
