Nas Now Shares Billboard Honor With Jay-Z

Hip-hop legend Nas has achieved a new milestone in his career. The rapper is now tied with Jay-Z for the most top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 chart. His latest album King’s Disease III debuted at #10 on the latest Billboard 200 chart with 29,000 first-week units earned. Both Nas and Jay-Z have had 16 Top 10 albums, with Nas having six of those being number one and 14 for Hov. They are also the second and third musicians to have their albums reach the top 10. The Beatles take the top spot with 19. While the long feud between the two is somewhat friendly, it is great to see black rappers achieve great excellence.

Nas vs. Jay-Z

It has not been a secret that Jay and Nas have had beef with each other in the past. With tracks like Ether, the two now poke fun at each other. He briefly brought up the topic in his track “Thun.”

“No beef or rivals, they playing ‘Ether’ on Tidal. Brothers can do anything when they decide to. In a Range Rover, dissecting bars from ‘Takeover.’ Sometimes I text Hova like, ‘N####, this ain’t over,’ laughing.”

He then went on The Daily Show after being nominated for Best Rap Album, saying that Hov threw him some shade.“When I released the tracklist for that album the other day, he released a picture with all his Grammys… Yeah, shout out to him,” he said. Nas is not the only artist who tied with Jay-Z.

Artists Catching Up To Jay-Z

Aside from Nas, Taylor Swift has tied Jay-Z for the most consecutive number-one albums on the Billboard 200. Both have had 11 studio albums consecutively top the chart. His wife, Queen Bey, ties him for the most nominations received in Grammy history. This comes after Beyonce’s nine Grammy nominations for the 2023 ceremony including Album, Record and Song of the Year for her universally acclaimed album Renaissance. Drake is also tied with the rapper for most number-one albums on the R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart. After the release of his joint album with 21 Savage Her Loss earlier this month, Drizzy now has 14 number ones. The album debuted at the top spot with 404,000 sold in the first week.

Nicki Minaj’s Songs Reportedly Still Up For Grammy Rap Nods

Nicki Minaj‘s complaints over Grammy rap nominations sparked a fierce controversy on Twitter. On Thursday, the Queen of Rap called out the Recording Academy for supposedly moving her single “Super Freaky Girl” to the Pop category.

“I have no prob being moved out [of] the RAP category as long as we [are] all being treated fairly,” Nicki tweeted. “If SFG has [to be] moved out RAP then so does ‘Big Energy’!”.

Nicki Minaj Could Still Land a Grammy Rap nod

However, some of Nicki Minaj’s music will still have the opportunity to win a Grammy in the rap category. According to a report by Variety, Minaj may appear in rap nominations, but not for “Super Freaky Girl.” Instead, she may appear for her collab with Lil Baby, “Do We Have a Problem?.”

“The Grammys’ rap screening committee apparently considered this more of a true [Hip-Hop song] and ‘Super Freaky Girl’ more pop in nature, splitting the difference,” Senior Music Writer Chris Willman wrote.

According to Willman, Nicki appears eight times on the Grammy ballot, with “Super Freaky Girl” keeping its place in the Pop category. The Academy also listed Minaj five times in rap categories. She can also earn two nominations in the music video category.

The Queens native’s initial complaints about the nominating process led to a bitter feud with “Big Energy” artist Latto. Over the course of Thursday night, the two women went back and forth on Twitter.

However, only the live version of Latto’s hit track is included in the submissions for Best Melodic Rap Performance. The Atlanta artist could see Best Rap Performance nods for “Sunshine”, “Booty” or “Mind Yo Business.” This means that “Super Freaky Girl” and “Big Energy” likely wouldn’t have competed for Best Rap Performance.

Nicki Minaj has been nominated for ten Grammys over the course of her career, including seven times in the Rap category. But the award has seemingly eluded her each time. Perhaps 2023 will finally be the year.

Diddy’s Mom Told Ma$e To Watch Out

Diddy’s mom aka Janice Combs made an appearance on Instagram lately. Mothers always fight for their children and don’t care about being judged for it. Especially when rappers’ moms get into it, you know there’s gotta be a fire in the hole. She apparently voiced against one of the industry’s hip-hop artists Ma$e. After all, what can the rammy be about?

Diddy’s Mom’s Reaction

As smart as she is Janice Combs kept an eye out and swung to action. Saturday 23rd July 2022, Combs did a Live Video on Instagram, making a shoutout to the following respected artists: LOX, biggie, and Ma$e when her mom was hooked up on hearing the last one on the list  and interrupted her son, saying right to the camera: “Don’t mess with my son.” Combs then replied: “Yeah we still love Ma$e, always gonna be love.'” Deep down we know his mother doesn’t approve of any of this.

The fracas between the 2 rappers

It’s no new news that the ‘Bad Boy Records Label‘ singer and its founder Combs have been on bad terms for quite a long time now. However,  the two were once best friends and released several record songs along in the 90s. Their first feud started over publishing but now, more issues are adding to the feud. Considering the 46-year-old rapper pointed his fingers at Combs for getting involved in shady business practices that tricked him out of money. He was not the only one to face financial troubles on the record label. Several artists present brought the matter forward. Despite the two not speaking, Ma$e still tends to talk about the feud in interviews. Moreover, he said how he felt cheated and had not received fair treatment due to Combs.

He also threw shades on Combs on releasing his single entitled “ The Oracle 2: The Liberation Of Mason Betha,” blaming the latter for exploiting Biggie Small’s death. He rapped:

“I’m not hating on your Billi worth/Right now, I’m only saying what you really work/You ain’t no architect/You just a n-gga who know how to market death.”

Furthermore, the relationship became bitter when the american rapper insulted Combs by mocking his Grammy Speech saying :

“@diddy I heard your #Grammy speech about how u are now for the artist and about how the artist must take back control, so I will be the first to take that initiative. Also, before we ask of other ethnicities to do us right we should do us as black people better. Especially the creators. I heard u loud and clear when u said that u are now for the artist and to that my response is if u want to see change you can make a change today by starting with yourself.”

Haters Inspire Doja Cat’s Next Album

Doja Cat intends to prove that she is a rapper at heart to her haters. Doubters have been attacking the Grammy winner ever since she put out her first album. First, the haters didn’t see her as a musician, and now Doja is also being questioned as a rapper. Doja Cat wants her next album to be a double album to quiet the outside noise and mostly feature her rapping skills.

The success of “Planet Her” Despite Haters’ Doubts

Doja Cat is still enjoying the success of her third studio album. The project was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year at the 64th Grammy. The album also went on to win the Top R&B Album at the Billboard Music Awards.

“Kiss Me More” ft. SZA, a single from Planet Her, won an American Music Award, a Grammy, and a VMA. As an artist, Doja Cat won Top R&B Artist and Top R&B Female Artist at the Billboard Music Awards and the Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist at the American Music Awards. The doubters have been proven wrong because Doja keeps winning.

Doja Cat’s Next Album Is For The Doubters

Planet Her had an R&B and Pop feel to it. The collective agrees with this, but Doja Cat wants her next album to be a rapper’s delight.

“I’ve rapped since the beginning, and I really couldn’t even sing that well, to begin with—I got a lot better.”

Doja Cat tells Elle that she grew up listening to Busta Rhymes and Lauryn Hill. It isn’t hard to see their influences in Doja Cat’s artistry. Doja Cat creates magnificent visuals through her fashion, music videos, live performances, and music. Her music pushes the boundaries just like the musicians she listened to. Haters dislike the limitations she goes against.

The Cat has had ideas about who she would like to work with on her next album. Complex reported that Doja would love to work with 9th Wonder and Jay Versace. The news came from Doja Cat herself during an IG Live session. Hopefully, these three will then develop something great for us to jam through our speakers.

https://twitter.com/DojaNews/status/1474614699446603778?t=oUBsZZCQwIxluMBMrktm9Q&s=19

Doja Cat continues to evolve from being an internet sensation to an award-winning artist. Can’t wait to see what’s next for her.

The GRAMMYs Deliver A Memoriam For Late Icons

It is always hard to think about the people we lost but it is something we all must do. The Grammys takes time during their night to focus on icons we have lost over the past year. Usually, the people listed in the memoriam contributed to music in some way but some icons surpass this requirement.

The Memoriam

The memoriam began with Trevor Noah paying his respects to the Foo Fighters drummer. Taylor Hawkins passed away last week at the age of 50. A tribute video played showcasing the talent of Taylor.

“Our thoughts goes out to Taylor’s family, his friends, the Foo Fighter family, and all of their fans around the globe.”- Trevor Noah

After, pictures of icons flashed as Cynthia Erivo, Ben Platt, Leslie Odom Jr., and Rachel Zegler performed songs composed by the late Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim. Ben sung Not a Day Goes By, Erivo performed Send in the Clowns as Odom continued with Not a Day Goes By, Zegler later added in Somewhere. All songs intertwined with the other. Finally, the singers all joined in on Somewhere to end the memoriam.

The singers weaved their songs together to create a touching memoriam performance. The entire audience was captivated by the performance. The room was completely silent as everyone showed their respect for those we loss during the past year.

Earl “DMX” Simmons , Adolph “Young Dolph” Robert Thorton Jr., Gregory “Shock G” Jacobs, Marcel “Biz Markie” Hall, Jessie D, Carl “Chucky” Thompson Jr, and Virgil Abloh are some of the names that appeared on screen during the memoriam. Other people with various jobs titles were also remembered like composers, producers, singers, managers, song writers, and music moguls. On the Grammy website a longer list does exist.

Of course, it would be impossible to include everyone who has contributed to music and also passed away in the memoriam. The Grammys did their best to honor as many as possible and the moment touched everyone watching and in the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

A Second Chance For Ye

Ye might be getting a second chance to perform on the Grammy stage, but he needs to be on his best behavior. HitsDailyDouble reported that several musical acts are still in talks with the Grammys to perform. This list includes Ye, who was told initially that he would not be performing at the 2022 Grammys.

The Grammys Tells Ye That He Can’t Perform

The Blast reports that Kanye and his team received a phone call on March 18, telling him he had been removed from performing at the Grammys. West got the news after his Eazy video, which depicts him kidnapping Pete Davidson, went viral and after he posted racist slurs aimed at Trevor Noah.

Instagram banned Ye for his post for violating their hate speech, harassment, and bullying policies. Kanye West also got into a verbal altercation with D.L. Hughley.

Does Mr. West Deserve It?

Kanye West would tell you that he is fighting for his marriage. He could go about it another way, but who determines how one should fight for love. We recently witnessed Will Smith walk onto the Oscar stage and slap Chris Tucker for using his wife as a punchline in a joke, but he received support. Many believe Ye is following the exact blueprint. Fiercely protect the one you love no matter what.

A Second Chance Will Add Ye To A List Of Big Names

The Grammys have announced a list of performers that will grace the MGM Grand Garden Arena stage. The Grammys announced Brothers Osborne, BTS, Olivia Rodrigo, Jack Harlow, Lil Nas X, Billie Eilish, and Brandy Carlile would perform. The Recording Academy later revealed Silk Sonic, John Legend, J Balvin, Carrie Underwood, Maverick City Music, Aymée Nuviola, and Billy Strings.

H.E.R., Nas, and Leslie Odom Jr. will also perform. Ye might get his second chance.

The 2022 Grammys will take place on April 3, 2022, in Las Vegas.

J Prince Calls Out The Grammys & Suggests An Alternative

This past Tuesday, March 22, J Prince aired out the Grammys in an Instagram clip he posted. Additionally, he suggested that artists should get together & host a concert of their own during the Grammys. He started the audio clip he posted on his Instagram page by sharing his negative thoughts about Kanye West getting banned from the Grammys. In his disapproval of that specific decision, J Prince also mentioned previous conflicts the Grammys made with other stars like Drake, Nicki Minaj, etc. Read J Prince’s full Instagram post below for yourself:

Hip-Hop Artists Starting An Anti-Grammy Concert

The Houston icon firmly believes that Hip-Hops stars & veterans should come together & host a concert on the same day as the Grammys. While the thought & sentiment is nice, it may be too short notice since the Grammys will be live on April 3. However, nothing is impossible & Hip-Hop as a whole makes up a decent chunk of their viewing audience. Drake, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj & The Weeknd were artists that he mentioned when sharing this idea with his followers. “I recommend that the artists I mentioned above—and more—come together in Las Vegas and perform at the same time as the Grammys on a special network and streaming platform to prove that ratings will change where the Grammys are concerned when the No. 1 selling genre in music—hip-hop—come together,” he expressed online.

Which Would You Watch On April 3rd?

In reality, most of Hip-Hop’s biggest artists don’t care about or need the Grammys at all. Yet, they keep treating the genre & its artists like they need them in today’s age. I’m not confidently sure if it’d gain more viewers that night than the Grammys, but I also wouldn’t be surprised either. Read more of FM Hip-Hop’s featured articles today.

J.I.D. Has Officially Scored Highest Charting Song With “Enemy”

Atlanta’s own Grammy nominated rapper, J.I.D. just reached a milestone!   His single, “Enemy” with Grammy winning group Imagine Dragons is his highest song to be on the charts ever. It’s J.I.D.’s first song in the Billboard Hot 100’s Top 10.  The song is for the animated Netflix show, Arcane: League of Legends. It was released last year and is now at number 8 in the top 10 after being on the charts for months!  The song is well on its way to a billion streams.  “Enemy” is about going through life enduring all types of conflicts.  The video is pretty cool as well as the show’s creators were able to transfer J.I.D. and the Imagine Dragons into the show’s main characters in their setting.

The Forever Story

Fans are waiting for his album “The Forever Story” to drop.  It’s supposed to be released sometime this year.  Fans may be eager because of a photo that circulated online of him and Dr.Dre in the studio.  He also has been in the studio with Metro Boomin, Anderson Paak, and Cordae.  J.I.D. met Drake last year, in to which he said Drake gave him praise and suggested they work together.  He even posted a photo with the caption “Met My Scorpio brother last night, this shit sound like October fr”.  Could Drizzy be on the album?  That would be dope!

Great First Quarter J.I.D.!

J.I.D has been starting this year off strong. He dropped the “Surround Sound” video featuring 21 Savage and Baby Tate. Just like Imagine Dragons helped J.I.D. get his first Billboard Top 10 Hit, he helps Baby Tate get his first 100 hit as “Surround Sound” landed on the charts at spot 90.

He is scheduled to be at Coachella in April as well as the Dreamville Festival a few weeks before. Token and J.I.D. collaborate on Token’s “Pink is Better” album as they create a gravitating video for ‘Boom’.  He is also featured on The Cool Kids album, “Before Shit Got Weird” with 6lack on “Lightwerk”.  EarthGang’s ‘Ghetto Gods’ album came out last month and J.I.D. teamed up with J.Cole on the song “Waterboyz”. He is set to be on Denzel Curry’s new album, ‘Melt My Eyez, See Your Future’, which drops Friday.

Coi Leray Is Aiming For A Grammy Nomination

After consistently being criticized for being a “TikTok” artist, Coi Leray is now putting those critics to shame. With the release of her latest single “Blick Blick” with Nicki Minaj, she wants to set the bar high for her rap career.

In a series of tweets, Leray is manifesting to get a “Best New Artist” nomination at the Grammy’s one day. “No More Parties, Big prrd, Twinnem, Anxiety and now Blick Blick,” she wrote. “I want best new artist at the Grammys. Even a nomination. I’ll take it.” In a follow-up tweet, she laughed, “Oh yeah … and thanks to everyone who laughed at my XXL freestyle.” “Blick Blick’s” music video currently has over 4 million views.

Best New Artist for Rappers

Once Coi Leray’s dream becomes a reality, she will be one of seven rap acts to be nominated for Best New Artist in the 62-year history of the award show. Out of five, only two have one thus far, with both being female rappers. Lauryn Hill was the first in 1999 and Megan Thee Stallion took the honor last year. In total, six women in rap history have been nominated for Best New Artist, with Saweetie earning a nomination this year.

Leray Is Not The Only “TikTok” Artist

Like Leray, there are a couple of artists who have gotten more success because of TikTok. Doja Cat is one who has become insanely popular over the last two years because of the platform. After the Say So and Sillouhette challenges, she has become a household name. Last year, she was also nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammys and is now nominated for eight this year, including Album, Record and Song of the Year. Another one is Gayle with her worldwide hit “abcdefu.” The song reached the third spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

“Lord Knows Pt. 2” By Drake? Just Blaze Says So

Just Blaze asked Drake just one question about “Lord Knows” on Instagram. However, it made a ton of noise and ended up on the Hip-Hop news websites.

Understandably so, since Drake’s fans now get a chance to relive some memories. “Lord Knows,” a track from the 2011 Grammy-nominated “Take Care” album, might have a new part coming out.

The song’s producer, Just Blaze, posted on IG. “Wow, @champagnepapi went back!” the producer captioned in the story. “Sooo..Can we put out ‘Lord Knows Pt. 2’ now? Sponsored by the good folks at @lrgclothing.”

Neither Drake nor featuring Rick Ross have yet commented on the possibility of “Lord Knows Pt.2.” However, the song’s producer dropping IG stories like that still certainly means something.

The “Lord Knows” Album

“Take Care” is Drake’s album which made him famous worldwide, making people sing his lyrics in all clubs from LA to Eastern Europe. Some of the artist’s most famous songs, like “Headlines” or “The Motto,” also appeared on the record.

It makes total sense why Drake got a grammy for “Take Care.” The artist didn’t just bring the fresh half-Rap-half-R’n’B sound in Hip-Hop. He also showed how a Hip-Hop artist can be sensitive without, let’s say, Ye’s eccentricity. Songs about romantic love, as well as warm feelings towards your “broskis,” took a central place in Drake’s art.

War & Peace

Speaking of Drake and Ye, the two veterans of North American Hip-Hop came to piece not that long ago. The conflict, which launched in 2007, lasted for more than a decade. Multiple disses got released, even Pusha T participated.

However, the two industry giants are now friends. This is also Larry Hoover’s accomplishment; Drake only agreed to be friends with Ye again if they can both perform at the “Free Larry Hoover” event.

It’s unclear whether now the two are friends or not. We will keep you posted and report on any updates in the artists’ relationship.
