Saweetie Speaks On Past Relationship With Quavo

Saweetie made an appearance on Yung Miami’s podcast Caresha Please, opening up on her relationship with ex Quavo. The Icy Girl’s dating life has been a major topic of discussion since she entered the rap game. She’s been linked with everyone from Lil Baby to Justin Combs.

However, fans can’t seem to stop circling back to Saweetie’s two year relationship with Quavo. The “My Type” rapper and the Migos star split last year over what she called a “betrayal.” No specifics about the breakup have been revealed, but Saweetie did address the issue on Caresha Please.

Yung Miami grilled Saweetie over rumors that the “Hotel Lobby” rapper cheated on her, fracturing the relationship. However, the Sacremento native didn’t give a direct response. “I think the past is the past and I’ve moved on since then,” she said while making a face. The City Girl followed up by asking whether or not the relationship was toxic. “I think we had a lot of growing pains together,” Saweetie replied.

As the podcast continued, Yung Miami touched on Saweetie’s memorable moments with Quavo. Saweetie then shared her thoughts on where the relationship may have been heading.

“I thought we was gon’ spend the rest of our lives together,” the “Best Friend” artist said. “With him, I knew it was the one. It was different.”

Yung Miami couldn’t help but address the fallout of the breakup when Quavo repossessed Saweetie’s car. The rapper simply laughed and told the host that she enjoyed the luxury lifestyle, but she would have to get her next car herself.

Saweetie since Quavo

Since her breakup in 2021, Saweetie has been spotted with many male celebrities. Earlier this year, fans speculated that she was back with her ex Keith Powers after the two were spotted at a friend’s party. Rumors also circulated that she was seeing Lil Baby after he reportedly treated her to a shopping spree.

Saweetie addressed these relationships on Caresha Please. “I’ve encountered men who, like…You know, we have a good time and then after that I hear them talking like telling people that we hanging out and that we doing some extra stuff. But it’s just like, Boy, just shut your mouth’.”

DJ Quik Explains How A Missing CD Almost Got Him Killed

Few eras of Hip-Hop are filled with as much mystique and intrigue as the 90s. Much of that is due to crazy and hard-to-believe stories around Death Row Records. Death Row’s appeal stems as much from the insane behind-the-scenes stories about the label as their myriad of classic albums do. What is even more impressive is that such stories keep coming out. This is despite the now numerous documentaries and tell-alls about Death Row. One such story recently got attention following its telling on Talib Kweli’s People’s Party podcast.

DJ Quik’s Lost CD

In the episode, famed west coast rapper and producer DJ Quik revealed that he almost died during the production of Tupac’s renowned All Eyez On Me album. Dj Quik served as a mixer on the album and produced the song “Heartz Of Men.” Because of his involvement, he frequently found himself in possession of demo tapes and unfinished cuts of the LP. He then explained how at one point, a security guard under his employee took an incomplete CD of the album out of the car he shared with DJ Quik. With the album in hand, he passed it around to his friends. Unfortunately, this resulted in the album leaking locally.

Confronting The Leaker

Eventually, Death Row’s infamous CEO, Suge Knight, got wind of the breach. Quik alleges that Suge called a meeting that ended in a physical fight in the Death Row office. Following this, DJ Quik and his security guard confronted the man who had leaked the album. Upon arrival, Quik fought the man, which according to Quik, resulted in some spilled Hennessey, which Quik alleged is what escalated the already heated situation. The man called for one of his friends to pull a gun. As Quik puts it in the interview, “…my man just pulled out a TEC…Like ‘I’m dead over this…2Pac Tape.”  Thankfully the security guard took possession of the firearm, and no one was shot. Somewhat humorously, the physical fighting continued, and Quik later arrived at a Death Row party injured and beaten.

As far as Quik is concerned, the situation ended well. He revealed he made amends with the leaker later on. He likewise added that the problem strengthened his bond with Tupac. Quik claimed they became incredibly close after Tupac’s learning of the altercation. Quik’s sadness about Pac’s untimely passing is evident during the interview.

Hidden Stories Uncovered

Despite the tragedy of Pac’s death, it speaks to his character that stories about his short life still retain such rampant virality. Stories like these continue to draw in new listeners because of the magnitude that both Tupac and Death Row Records had on the culture. Thankfully, with the increase in rappers appearing on podcasts, such stories will no longer be stuck in the once small circles they used to be. Now every rap fan can learn the incredible untold stories of hip-hop’s fascinating past.

Kid Cudi Sets Record Straight on Drake Comments

In a recent interview with Esquire, Kid Cudi made some harsh comments on Drake. The rapper discussed his strained relationship with Kanye West, saying that it’s hard to forgive Ye after the situation with Pete Davidson. According to Cudi, the two won’t be repairing their friendship anytime soon.

“With all due respect, I’m not Drake, who’s about to take a picture with him next week and be friends again, and their beef is squashed,” Cudi said. “That’s not me. What I say, I mean. I will be done with you.” He also said that it would take a “miracle” for he and Kanye to squash their beef.

Cudi’s  reference to Drake raised some brows, but the Chicago artist wants to set the record straight. Kid Cudi took to Twitter and specified that he has love for Drake and that no disrespect was intended.

“Just to be clear, I wasn’t tryna throw a shot at Drake. I got love 4 him,” he wrote. “My point I was tryna make is that I’m not so forgiving. Meaning he might be a lil nicer than me in that situation w[ith] dude. That’s all. Maybe that came off wrong thru my words. So yea, all good w[ith] Drake.”

Kid Cudi’s history with Drake

Considerably, this isn’t the first time Drake’s name has passed Kid Cudi’s lips. In September 2016, the “Day ‘N Nite” artist name dropped Drizzy in a tweet regarding his biggest haters in the music industry. He also made it a point to include Ye in that list as well.

While Kanye made it a point to squash the beef at a show in Houston a few days later, Drake’s response took a different route. The Toronto rapper launched a series of sneak disses at Cudi, with the lowest of blows coming when Drake poked at Cudi’s history with mental health.

Cudi then responded with tweets from rehab, challenging Drake to repeat the bars to his face. Eventually, the two reconciled, with Cudi even featuring on Drake’s “IMy2” from Certified Lover Boy.

Yasiin Bey AKA Mos Def Praises Kanye For His Pivotal Album ‘Graduation’

When Kanye West dropped Graduation, the world stopped.  He was in a battle with 50 Cent as they dropped their albums on the same day.  I remember it like it was yesterday.  Back then, superstars like 50 Cent and Ye, didn’t drop on the same day.  Maybe the same year, but not around the same time.  On September 11, 2007, 50 Cent released his fifth album, Curtis while Kanye dropped his third album, Graduation.  Yasiin Bey, aka Mos Def recalled that day and felt it was a special moment for not only Kanye, but hip hop itself.

Drink Champs

Yasiin sat down with N.O.R.E. for his Drink Champs podcast recently to describe that moment.  He feels that people should appreciate Kanye more because he kept the music industry alive.  He outsold 50 Cent by hundreds of thousands and his album was of better quality.  Graduation sold almost one million records in one week!  Mos Def continued to say that the numbers from Graduation helped record companies to start streaming music.  And for a black man in Hip Hop to do this was crazy at the time!  The album not only changed the music industry, but it changed Hip Hop as well.  Kanye’s creativity and willing to experiment beyond the typical hip-hop format pushed the genre in another direction.  Hip Hop changed when Kanye stepped in, which made the way for rappers like Chance The Rapper, Kid Cudi, Lupe Fiasco, and Drake.

Curtis vs. Graduation

Yasiin found himself on Graduation twice.  He was featured on “Good Night” as well as “Drunk and Hot Girls”.  He likes 50 Cent and was a fan of Get Rich Or Die Tryin, but he knew Graduation was the better project.  Yasiin went to the Kanye’s listening party for the album.   He recalled that it was more of a production as it was in a movie theater.  Kanye matched the songs with programs and animations to Bey’s surprise.  He left the theater knowing 50 had no chance to compete with Ye.  Graduation was the number one record in the world when it came out while Curtis was number two, selling 690,000 units in the first week.

Lady Leshurr Wants Money From Cardi B Over Old Song

Cardi B is one of the most successful artists out right now & came up in the industry through mixtapes early on. Like many other rappers before her & now, she would rap over other artists’ beats in these early projects. Lady Leshurr wants credit & compensation over Cardi’s early song Cheap Ass Weave which uses the beat from Leshurr’s song Queen’s Speech Ep. 4. “You mind asking Cardi if she can break me off a likkle change she used my beat/idea before her big break and is now a millionaire and I got paid 0,” said Leshurr on her Twitter page yesterday (August 2nd).

The Rest Of Their Exchange On Twitter

After Lady Leshurr made her initial tweet, Cardi B responded confused by Leshurr’s claims. She expressed on her Twitter account in response to Leshurr comically stating, “I made like 2 dollars of that song ….you want the other dollar?” Of course, things didn’t just end there as Lady explains she mainly just wants her credit. Interestingly, she also revealed that she tried contacting Cardi about it years ago through direct messaging. Leshurr ends off with, “I was cool wen I thought it was just YT cover but it’s on streaming sites as ‘cheap azz weave’ nw & urs comes up b4 mine so yes dollar & credit pls.”

Who’s Side Are You On? Cardi B Or Lady Leshurr

Regardless of whose argument you align with, both songs were undeniably impactful in their careers. Lady Leshurr’s Queen’s Speech Ep. 4 currently sits on Youtube with over 60 million views. Meanwhile, Cardi B’s fan base acknowledges Cheap Ass Weave as one of her first early songs that helped boost her career into what it is now. It’s a shame when business & the industry has to interfere with great art from talented musicians. Do you think Lady Leshurr should’ve called out Cardi B? Additionally, do you believe Cardi B should’ve at least given Leshurr credit for remixing her song? Read more of FM Hip-Hop’s featured articles today.

Wiz Khalifa Gives Insight On Why He Prefers Biggie Over 2Pac

Recently, Wiz Khalifa answered the one question that all rappers are asked sooner or later. Do you prefer Biggie or 2Pac? The Biggie vs 2Pac debate has been around since the untimely deaths of both icons. Hundreds of rappers from all over the world have answered this question. During an interview at SiriusXM earlier this week, DJ Whoo Kid asked Wiz Khalifa about his preference between Biggie and 2Pac. Since Wiz has spent the majority of his life living on both the east and west coast. Though Wiz gives proper respect to 2Pac mentioning his work ethic and attitude he ultimately sides with Biggie. He credits his decision to Biggie’s complex lyrics and how you can still listen to him in the present time.

“Biggie. I like Biggie because lyrically like you could still listen to Biggie’s shit today and be like, ‘Wow, he really said that. He talks about clothes, like brands in a crazy way and he talks about cars in a crazy way and he talks about women. He’s just really poetic. That’s not to say one is better than the other,” he mentions. “But I just love how complex his bars are. Pac is raw, Pac is crazy, he’s hard.”

Watch the full interview below.

Wiz Khalifa’s Connection To The East And West

Wiz has a very unique connection between the East and West sides of rap. He grew up 400 miles west of Brooklyn, the Pittsburgh native has always shown an appreciation for Biggie. Even going as far as sampling the rap legend on a few of his own tracks. Songs like “Gin and Drugs” and “The Race” both sample the classic Biggie song “Going Back to Cali.” Wiz has his own music he is also currently working on as well. He says he is ready for the release of his experimental Multiverse album that comes out next Friday, July 29.

Ashanti Originally Fought Her Team About Her Hit Song ‘Baby’

Ashanti almost missed out on having the hit song Baby on her debut album with the famous Murder Inc. label. During a recent interview with Vibe, she recalls fighting with her team about whether the record should be included on the self-titled album. “I don’t know. I felt like, I liked what I wrote, but it was a different vibe because it’s such a low register, you know, slow,” was her explanation for feeling that way at the time. Now, she’s celebrating the 20th anniversary of both the single & her debut album with no regrets. If you aren’t familiar, check out one of Ashanti’s biggest songs ever below:

The Conflict That Many Big & Small Artists Have

A lot of times we see artists dislike songs that their fans would consider their best. As a musician myself, it’s hard to not be your own worst critic. Ashanti touches on similar feelings herself in the Vibe interview when also weighing on whether the song should’ve been a single or just an album cut. After all, the lead single is typically the clearest representation of what to expect from the rest of the full release. Ashanti herself loves the record now as she stated, “I love just conceptually how I flipped it and going back and forth with the ad-libs and the verse and the metaphors. I love the record. But I was just nervous about it because it was different.” Thankfully, she sees the genius of the song that we all know & love

20th Anniversary of Debut Album Ashanti

It’s been 20 years since Ashanti dropped her famous self-titled debut album. The album spawned several other impactful songs too including Foolish, Happy & others. After receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, she’s currently re-recording her debut album to receive the proper royalties that weren’t received from the Murder Inc. release. Are you excited to hear this classic album’s re-recorded version 20 years later? Read more of FM Hip-Hop’s featured articles today.

National African American Museum Set to Host Hip-Hop Block Party

This world-renowned center of black history is celebrating African American art with a major block party this upcoming August.

A Block Party to Remember

The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) has announced plans to throw a rap block party. The Smithsonian released a promotional poster and official statement last week, detailing the exciting event.

According to the Smithsonian, the block party is packed with “performances by local and national talent, presentations and activities that explore hip-hop music’s origins and cultural influence”. To honor the one-year anniversary of the Smithsonian Anthology of Hip-Hop and Rap, a public celebration is scheduled for Saturday, Aug 13. Rap fans and black history buffs will have plenty of time to enjoy the music and festivities. The block party will run from 11 am – 11 pm. If you can snag a ticket, you’ll be treated to performances by O Slice, Yungmanny, Phuzz, and Mimi Fresh just to name a few. One notable performer is D-Smoke, a contender in season 1 of The Rap Game on Netflix.

DC is famous for its thriving block party scene. Capital Pride Block Party, The Block Party Carnival, and the HUSL Block Party are just a few of the yearly events the area hosts. Along with its bustling brunch culture and the go-go music scene, DC is a nonstop hub for black culture And camaraderie.

The Smithsonian Anthology of Hip-Hop and Rap has already received glowing reception in its first year. Luckily, party patrons will be able to explore the museum displays during the building’s routine hours. If you’re a local foodie, there’s a reason to stop by. The Sweet Home Café, located inside the building, will be serving “hip hop-inspired” cuisine.

The live performances will take place inside The National Museum of African American History and Cultures first floor. There will also be an outdoor stage a short distance from the museum.

Recognizing Black Music as History

In addition to the block party, the Smithsonian is also premiering the seventh installment of its ongoing web series gOD-Talk 2.0: Hip-Hop & #BlackFaith. This series features several accomplished rappers and academics having enriching discussions about the culture. This special new episode promises to “explore[s] the relationship between hip-hop culture and Black expressions of faith and spirituality.” You can tune in on Facebook Live Sunday, Aug 14 to catch the episode.

The associate director for curatorial affairs for NMAAHC Dwandalyn Reece is all on board. She spoke about her excitement for the event in a recent statement. “The origins of hip-hop and rap rest in community where people gathered together in basements, on street corners, neighborhood dance parties and community shows to tell the stories of the people and places that brought it to life in a language all its own.” She began.

“It is only fitting that NMAAHC celebrates the one-year anniversary of the Smithsonian Anthology of Hip-Hop and Rap with a block party in our front yard. Like a true block party, we invite all ages to come together to enjoy activities and performances in honor of the museum’s greatest homage to the music and culture of hip-hop.” She explained.

Truly, this upcoming August has plenty in store for DC‘s history and music buffs.

Soulja Boy Team’s Up With Limewire to Start an NFT Empire

Limewire is known as a lost piece of the mid-2000s pop culture. But all that may change soon with the help of Soulja Boy

Soulja Boy is patterning with Limewire 12 years after its forced shutdown. Following a lengthy legal battle with the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) and several music labels, Limewire is making its comeback.

Soulja Boy’s New Bag

Back in March,Limewire first announced their plans of a relaunch. The shift to a music-based NFT (non-fungible tokens) shop is a controversial and surprising choice. Even more surprising than that, is the choice of partnership. Rapper turned businessman Soulja Boy has stepped up as the face of Limewire rebrand. The ‘Kiss me Thru the Phone’ artist is meant to help develop a center to “explore, collect and trade” NFTs. A commercial was released last week featuring Soulja Boy promoting the revamped platform.

With his iconic 2007 song ‘Crank Dat (Soulja Boy’) as the soundtrack, the ad starts with two young students leaving school to come home and download music. Certainly a familiar scene for many. The commercial subsequently flashes forward to the present year 2022 with the two same middle schoolers all grown up. The duo relives their childhood memories by logging into Limewires NFT center.

A post shared by Soulja Boy (Big Draco) (@souljaboy)

When looking closely at early internet culture, Soulja Boy is actually a great fit for Limewire. His early hits like ‘Crank Dat’ and Pretty Boy Swag’ saw huge amounts of downloads on the site during its original run. Along with Soulja’s recent pivot to business ventures like gaming hardware and tech, he may be just the right fit for Limewire after all.

The New Classic

Limewire in its heyday was the main contender against big record companies seeking profit from their music. With people across the globe downloading songs for free, the site quickly got into hot water with several labels specifically Artista Records. Although Creator of Limewire Mark Gorton lost his 2006 lawsuit, that didn’t stop Austrian businessmen Julian and Paul Zehetmayr from obtaining the naming rights and continuing Limewires infamous legacy.

In the modern version of Limewire, the focus will be on purchasing music and owning original content. This content includes album covers, music videos, and the tracks. Truly a big change from Limewires original business model. This is likely due to the completely different state of the modern music industry. It’s no longer a process or a hassle to have access to free music. Back in 2008 you needed Limewire to make your own free playlist. In the year 2022, there are countless apps with the same function without all the bugs and viruses. Aside from Soulja Boy, celebs like Brandy And Travis Barker are putting their support behind the project.

You can follow Limewire on Twitter to see day-by-day updates on their rebrand.
