According to Apple Inc. officials, the company will discontinue its last iPod product on May 10. Furthermore, after decades on the market, the end of an entire product line is also a significant event.

“Music has always been part of our core at Apple, and bringing it to hundreds of millions of users in the way iPod did, impacted more than just the music industry — it also redefined how music is discovered, listened to, and shared,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, in a statement issued on May 10.

Officials at Apple released a statement in 2001 describing the product as a “breakthrough MP3 music player.”

“With iPod, Apple has invented a whole new category of digital music player that lets you put your entire music collection in your pocket and listen to it wherever you go,” said Apple’s then-CEO, Steve Jobs, in the statement. “With iPod, listening to music will never be the same again.”

The First Apple iPod

The first iPod model was made available for purchase in November 2001, one month after the product made its public debut. The first iPods retailed for $399. The CPI Inflation Calculator on the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics website estimates that this amount is equivalent to approximately $646 in 2022.

Apple has offered an assortment of music players under the iPod brand since the release of the original iPod.

Apple released the iPod mini in 2004 and the iPod shuffle in 2005. According to the company, the iPod shuffle was the first iPod product to sell for under $100. Moreover, the iPod nano was a full-featured iPod that was smaller than a #2 pencil.

In 2007, Apple introduced the iPod touch. According to officials, the product features the same multi-touch user system first introduced on the iPhone. In addition, the iPhone was first launched in 2007.

Company representatives say that users can “pack up to 1,000 CD-quality songs into the ultra-portable 6.5-ounce design that fits in their pockets for the first edition of iPods.”

With the release of the first iPod, Apple has added several new functionalities and increased the device’s capacity over time.

In 2005, Apple introduced an updated iPod, which features a color screen and the ability to view videos stored on the device. By 2007, the successor to the original iPod, the iPod classic, will be able to hold 40,000 songs or 200 hours of video.

The iPod touch featured Wi-Fi capability in its initial release, allowing people to access the internet with a Wi-Fi connection. In 2019, the final version of the iPod touch included the ability to make Group FaceTime calls. This device also enabled users to experience virtual reality.

iPod Success!

Apple officials announced in August 2007, almost six years after the release of the original iPod, that they had sold 100 million units. The company released several other music players under the iPod brand in the process.

Based on an article from Macworld, iPod’s popularity also helped to revive Apple’s computer business. Furthermore, according to its financial statement summary, in the 4th quarter of 2008, Apple sold over 11 million iPods.

However, the company’s financial reports released in 2008 show a decline in iPod sales. Based on data from 2009, Apple sold over 10 million iPods in the fourth quarter of that year.

In 2014, the company sold approximately 2.6 million units of iPods in the fourth quarter of that year. According to Reuters, Apple ceased reporting iPod sales in 2015. There have been many discontinued iPod products over the years. The iPod touch is the latest to discontinue.

What Remains Of The iPod Devices?

A website called TechCrunch reported in 2014 that Apple discontinued the iPod classic without announcing it. As reported by The Verge, both the iPod shuffle and iPod nano have been discontinued. As a result, the iPod touch is the only product that carries the name iPod.

Before May 10, the iPod product line existed in an environment that was very different from that of the first iPod. These features that once distinguished the iPod are now available in a number of other Apple products, whether portable or not.

According to the company’s statement dated May 10, its once-iconic music player line continues to live on.

“We’ve integrated an incredible music experience across all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and across Mac, iPad, and Apple TV,” said Joswiak in the statement.

According to Apple’s statement on May 10, iPod touch devices are still available for purchase from Apple’s website. These devices are also available from Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Resellers.
