Spider-Man: Across The Spider Verse & 10 Other Times Rappers Invaded Geek Culture Films

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse has had a strong start at the box office during its first weekend of release. Along with the star-studded film comes an equally impressive soundtrack produced by critically acclaimed superproducer Metro Boomin

The Atlanta-bred beat orchestrator brought together an expansive list of his best longtime collaborators along with some fresh faces outside of his usual cohorts. The result is an auditory treat that finds artists like 21 Savage, 2 Chainz, Offset, JID, Nas, and the reigning hitmaker from the previous soundtrack Swae Lee flexing their range.

To promote the album, there is also custom artwork for each feature that sees them as their spider-verse persona. It’s an interesting concept and the pictures themselves are dope and memorable.

This got us thinking about the other time that rappers have found themselves creating music for properties associated with comic books, cartoons, and video games. Hip Hop and Geek culture often intersect. The ability to tailor their typical adult-oriented styles into something digestible by a widespread family-friendly audience is admirable. Oftentimes this creates some strong bangers when the artists are truly fans of the franchises. It was especially dope to hear Lil Wayne’s verse. It was a great ode to Spider-Man in his unique style.

Here are 10 contributions from rap and hip artists to movie soundtracks based on video games, comic books, and cartoons.

Swae Lee & Post Malone – Sunflower

Swae Lee and Post Malone came together to create a true banger when they collaborated on the soundtrack for Spider-Man: Enter The Spider-Verse. The song has a uniquely feel-good sound that creates an instant vibe whenever it finds its way into a listening ear. In addition to being a standout track for the movie, the song went on crush many sales records becoming the highest certified song of all time with a current standing of 18 times platinum.

Imagine Dragons, Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Logic, and Ty Dolla $ign – Sucker For Pain

The soundtrack for Suicide Squad released in 2016 was filled with certified bangers and a tracklist that features a who’s who of artists from various genres such as Rick Ross, Twenty One Pilots, Khelani, G-Eazy, Skrillex, Grimes, and Panic At The Disco!. A particular standout was Sucker For Pain which saw the effortless combination of Imagine Dragons’ signature arena rock sound with the slick wordplay of some of the best rappers in the game.

Wiz Khalifa, Lil Yachty, Sueco, & Ty Dolla $ign – Speed Me Up

This is the second appearance from the Cleveland cannabis authority on this list, and it’s definitely not his last. This a lovingly created track and it comes across as if everyone involved is a fan of the blue speedster. The song is produced by the excellent duo TakeADayTrip and it truly sounds like a song that would be playing in the background of a level in Sonic The Hedgehog 2 on Sega Genesis with a distinctly 80’s flair incorporated as well.

Lil Mosey, Tyga, and Swae Lee – Krabby Step

This is honestly one of the most unlikely creations but it’s an absolute banger. Everyone did their part to complete the assignment but Swae Lee went the extra mile on his verse with some super slick lines and references for die hard and casual Spongebob Squarepants fans. I guarantee you’ll be singing along before the track ends.

Deion Sanders & MC Hammer – Straight To My Feet

This song is an absolute blast, especially if it’s enjoyed along with the music video. The song was released in conjunction with the original Street Fighter Movie that starred Jean Claude Van Damme and the late, great Raul Julia. The music video features many of the actors from the film reprising their roles and partying alongside two of the biggest entertainers in music and sports. It seemed like everyone was having a great time on the set. With the recent release of Street Fighter 6, now is the perfect time for a nostalgia trip.

Wiz Khalifa, Juicy J, Ty Dolla $ign feat. Kill The Noise & Madsonik

This is one of my favorite soundtrack songs of all time. The combination of Taylor Gang and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is something I didn’t know I needed. The love that every artist seems to have for the franchise is apparent throughout their verses, and Juicy J gets off a magnificent double entendre when he spits “All this green in my pocket, you can call it Turtle Power”.

Kendrick Lamar & SZA – All The Stars

The entire Black Panther soundtrack was filled to the brim with bangers and artists hailing from The Golden Coast. All The Stars is the standout because of how perfectly it captures the energy and vibe of the overall film experience. When the credits start rolling and you hear SZA and Kendrick trading out crooning and bars it creates a vibe that almost feels like you’re leaving church service. Paramedic! and King’s Dead could also be contenders for this list but K. Dot and SZA really outdid themselves and created something that will always bring Black Panther to mind.

Shaq, Ice Cube, B-Real, Peter Gunz, & KRS-One – Men Of Steel

Many may not remember the DC Film based on the Steel character from the mid-’90s but I do. However, I did not remember this song. This is quite a lineup but it doesn’t seem outlandish due to Shaq’s hip-hop pedigree in addition to his numerous accolades on the court. This is a hip-hop track through and through that shows each of the featured MCs bringing the bars over a hard-hitting Boom Bap style beat. Definitely, one to check out if you’re a fan of this era of hip-hop.

Megan Thee Stallion & Normani – Diamonds

The Birds of Prey soundtrack was underrated upon release and featured a strong lineup of women in hip hop such as Doja Cat, Saweetie, and the two artists that created this lovely slap. Meg and Normani play well off of each other and truly bring the same energy as the movie. Badass women making a name for themselves in their profession and keeping their foot on the neck of the competition. It was very interesting that Rico Nasty wasn’t included on the soundtrack, however. It definitely seems like she could have created some magic.

Kid Cudi – The Rage

Kid Cudi is no stranger to the big screen both as a star and a soundtrack contributor. His contribution to the film Rampage, based on the video game series, didn’t get the love it deserved on release. Featuring Cudi’s signature off-kilter flow, humming, and crooning bolstered by strong production. The interpolation of The Smashing Pumpkins’ song Bullet With Butterfly Wings creates an ideal orchestra for giant monsters to pummel each other.

So that’s the list, let us know what you thought of it in the comments below! Did any songs catch your ear or bring back fond memories? Were there any songs you think should have been included?

Where’s MJ: Boosie’s Upcoming Movie Premiere

Where’s MJ Movie Premiere

Boosie Badazz is premiering his new film Where’s MJ this Sunday. The Louisiana rapper will be hosting two screenings at Clark Atlanta University, the general public showing is at 3 PM. There will also be a private showing at 7 PM. The film appears to have a Christmas tone combined with some hood hijinks. The film features many social media mainstays including Desi Banks, Grove Hero,  and Rob Kazi; along with hip-hop and reality TV legend Flava Flav and the late rapper Trouble. From the trailer, it looks like the movie will be an excellent addition to the growing resurgence of independently produced films from Black creators. Check out the trailer for Where’s MJ below:

Boosie’s Growing Film Company

This isn’t Boosie’s first time as a filmmaker. His website features several movies he’s produced and/or directed starting with My Struggle in 2021. Earlier this year, he released Water Boyz The Movie featuring the acting debut of Corey J. The young hip-hop artist hails from Mississippi with past appearances on CNN, The Ellen Show, and VICE’s Noisey alongside Young Thug. 2010 saw Boosie begin his acting career appearing in Ghetto Stories. It also featured Webbie, Bun B, Tyrin Turner, and Nicole “Hoopz” Alexander.

The Resurgence Of Independent Hood Films

Recently, there has been a resurgence in support for independent Black film creators. One platform this is most evident on is Tubi TV. Over the past few years, the streaming service has seen a rapid rise in original Black productions such as Crosses, Plug Love, McGraw Ave, and many more. However, this isn’t a new trend; many classic Black films that are held in high regard today were independently produced. Films such as 3 Strikes, Friday, The Wash, Boomerang, Civil Brand, Gang Of Roses, and the majority of John Singleton’s early work were all produced with small crews and budgets. The successes of films like these helped to legitimize the selling ability of Black creatives to the powerhouse studios. It’s great to see Boosie and his team carrying on this legacy for a new generation.

FM Spotlight: OJ Da Juiceman – “Use My Wrist”

OJ Da Juiceman is back in the booth and his latest release, “Use My Wrist,” is reminiscent of the piano-laden early trap that laid the foundation for the genre’s dominance today. @Jreidtheproducer brings the mid-2000s into 2022, also with a sound that’s familiar and refreshing.

The song has been garnering positive reception from listeners. Many see it as a great return to form, with excitement for what’s to come.

In particular, people have expressed praise for the cover art. A throwback to the creative mixtape artwork that rose in popularity during the mid-2000s to early 2010s. The Rolex as a stove-top is also a nice touch. This single is the complete package of nostalgia for the hip-hop lovers who grew up in the era of mixtape downloads, mp3 players, and CD mixes.

Back Like He Never Left

Although OJ Da Juiceman hasn’t seen much radio play since he had us singing along about fractions and mimicking his ad-lib “Aye,” he’s consistently released music. In 2021, OJ Da Juiceman also released “Alaska n Atlanta 3” and “Lost Tapes,” executive produced by Zaytoven.

OJ Da Juiceman Performing

In 2020, OJ DA Juiceman also partnered with Zaytoven and Yung LA for the “Zone Connect” project. Since OJ first made a significant impact, he has fed his fanbase plenty of singles and projects to feast on. Things are looking very bright for the “Bricks” rapper as he enters 2023 with a new management team.

No Jumper Interview

Last week, OJ sat down with No Jumper for an in-depth interview about his career. They also discussed OJ’s friendship with Gucci Mane and the many conflicts that arose.

In the interview with Adam-22, OJ was genuine, provided great insight into his personality, and let us see why he’s always managed to captivate listeners. Overall, it’s a great interview that proves he’s one of the most grounded artists with an unmatched hustle.

Tee Grizzley Is Getting Big Bucks From Gaming

Tee Grizzley has been making headlines lately for his private Grand Theft Auto Online server. Grizzley Gang Gaming is receiving a surge in attention but has been on a consistent rise since it’s launch. The rapper’s private server is called is a virtual hub where players engage in Grand Theft Auto Role Play. The Detroit-based artist has hosted several major streamers in gaming; as well as fellow rappers. The streams are a semi-scripted storyline format that simulates life in the trenches without the risk. “I created a Grand Theft Auto [role playing ] server called Grizzley World. It represents the trenches. (Grizzley World) let’s you be in the streets without being in the streets” stated Grizzley in a recent interview.

The Official Grizzley Gang YouTube page is just under 500,000 subscribers and recently signed a lucrative deal with lifestyle gaming brand XSET in April.

Grizzley Gang Joins XSET

In April 2022, Tee Grizzley signed a deal with premiere lifestlye gaming brand XSET. XSET is an organization that specializes in providing a second chance for ex-convicts through online gaming.

PR Newswire Quote From XSET CBDO and co-founder Clinton Sparks:

“XSET is about pushing boundaries and redefining the world of gaming. We are excited to welcome Tee Grizzley to the set to help give a second chance to those who need one, as well as continuing to introduce gaming to those unfamiliar with the opportunities it provides. XSET is building the worlds greatest culture club and Tee with his music, gaming and entrepreneurial spirit is an amazing representation of what that means.”

The partnership will allow Tee Grizzley to expand the subscription-based Grizzley World to the next level. “I’m excited to join XSET and take Grizzley Gang Gaming to the next level. I’ve always loved gaming for fun, but now it’s so much more than that. I’ve seen how this industry can really change lives and I can’t wait to provide more opportunities for people who have faced similar challenges and adversities as I have”, stated Grizzley according to PR Newswire.

Million Dollaz Worth Of Game Podcast Interview

During a recent interview with Wallo and Gillie The Kid, the “First Day Out” creator elaborated on thelucrative business of video game streaming and how he monetized his platform:

“I get paid from the server because it’s membership-based and we have nearly 90,000 members. I stream it on Twitch and get paid from them. Then I take the Twitch videos I streamed and put them on YouTubeto get paid on there too. Plus, there are sponsorships, ads, and all this s**t (to) get paid from too”, Tee told the hosts.

Additionally, he revealed that other members on the Grizzley World server get paid for playing also. This is a major step for diversifying the landscape of video game streaming. Video game streaming and hip hop may seem like an odd pairing, but this isn’t a new trend. Pro gamer Ninja has played Fortnite with Drake, which Drizzy used as promo for “God’s Plan”. Meanwhile, polarizing streamer Adin Ross has hosted Polo G, Blueface, Lil Yachty and many more. Hip Hop’s influence continues to innovate across mediums.

Guap ,formerly known as Guapdad4000, stars in the short film STOOP KID in collaboration with production company 88 Rising. The semi-biographical short film is currently streaming on Amazon Prime as part of the Amazon Music documentary series.

The official summary for the film states:

“88rising teamed up with Amazon Music to present GUAP’s thought-provoking personal short film, STOOP KID, set for release on July 21st on Amazon Music and Prime Video. The film is a deeply personal coming-of-age story which follows music artist Akeem ‘GUAP’ Hayes as he navigates a complex upbringing in Oakland, California. The music from GUAP’s album 1176, titled after his childhood home address, sets the tone for this moving story, telling the tale of a Black-Filipino artist as he explores his identity, his family, and community”.

“I Got tired of people saying my life is a movie… so I shot one. It’s a short film/musical and it’s saucy as fuck” – June 8th @guapdad4000

West Oakland To Worldwide

Akeem Hayes hails from West Oakland and has rapidly built an organic fanbase and gained accolades. He first rose to digital prominence through social media due to his natural persona that could be considered a parody of most rappers confidence levels. However, this was his true personality; there are elements of the Bay Area culture and his eclectic interests displayed throughout his brand. Guap maximized on the combination of his social media reach, natural personality and a diverse creative skillset to generate attention. After answering J. Cole’s open invitation, he was nominated for a Grammy after contributing to Dreamville’s Revenge Of The Dreamers 3. Since then, he has collaborated with major acts like Charlie Wilson, Chance The Rapper, and Rick Ross. While maintaining a strong presence in the alternative rap space working with acts like Buddy, Kenny Beats, and Denzel Curry.

The Album That Inspired Stoop Kid: 1176

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kVsF9f3SBC78PkTJy1tcCclI6Jg2bBokI

Guap and prolific producer, Illmind, came together to craft the deeply personal 1176. The title of the project is the street number of Hayes childhood address. The tracks are an introspective, vulnerable, and candid look at the life experiences of the Oakland-based MC. This album serves as the inspiration for Stoop Kid and aims to bring the vivid audio tale to the silver screen. He held a June 8th screening for STOOP KID at Brain Dead on the legendary Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles.

STOOP KID is streaming now on Amazon Prime. 1176 is streaming on all major platforms.

#FMSpotlight: Louie Ray – ‘Still Grinding 4’ (Listen)

Louie Ray hails from Flint, MI and has been steadily increasing his online presence and fanbase. His latest release “Still Grinding 4” was recently released along with the video for his latest single “Figure It Out”:

Figure It Out Single

Ray has been grinding to make a serious name for himself since 2017. His unique combination of melodic crooning and a rapid-fire modern Midwest flow create a listening experience that’s familiar but stands out in the crowd. This is exemplified on “Figure It Out” with Louie humming a bright and cheerful tune for the chorus. However, it’s quickly countered with the hard-hitting subject matter of his verses.

The hummed chorus itself seems like it could be actual words, similar to the way Missy Elliot would vocalize in unique ways. This would bring the song’s title full circle.

Digital Dominance

Louie Ray has picked up considerable momentum following the release of his latest project. “Figure It Out” has over 84,000 views on YouTube after being on the site for a little over a week. He’s on track to enter the upper echelon of Michigan-based rappers. His social media presence is also constantly growing with over 176,000 followers on Instagram alone. He has also been featured on a variety of platforms including Off The Porch With Dirty Glove Bastard.

Happy 30th Anniversary! Best Rapper Cameos on ‘Martin’

Happy 30th Anniversary to a cultural masterpiece! The Martin reunion show is now streaming on BET+ and has brought to mind many of the standout rapper cameos on the series. These rapper cameo appearances are significant for being some of the earliest instances of rappers appearing on a broadcast television series.

Let’s take a look at our 8 favorite rapper cameos that appeared on Martin.

8. Method Man

Method Man is no stranger to appearing in TV and film in the current stage of his career. However his cameo on Martin was his first opportunity to flex his acting chops. In the episode he plays a burglar robbing Martin’s apartment that plays along with an ongoing beef between Martin and Pam to make off with the goods.

7. Bushwick Bill

Bushwick Bill on Martin

Bushwick Bill of The Geto Boys had a cameo on Martin along with Tony Cox. The duo brought plenty of laughs in the Season 1 episode.

6. Tone Loc

Tone Loc on Martin

Tone Loc had quite the career in the early 90’s following the release of his smash hit song “Funky Cold Medina”. He appeared on many series of the era but his cameo on Martin stands out. He played a former popular student that bullied Martin in their school days. Martin finds him breaking into students’ lockers at their reunion and finally stands up to him.

5. Yo-Yo

Yo-Yo had several cameos on Martin as Sheneneh’s partner in crime Keylolo. She had a hilarious dynamic with Lawrence’s character. The duo portray the roles of 90s hot girls perfectly and created classic scenes with their natural chemistry. Yo-Yo was also the protege’ and frequent collaborator of West Coast rap legend and entrepreneur Ice Cube.

4. Snoop Dogg

Snoop Dogg’s cameo on Martin was featured in an episode where Pam and the crew throw Martin and Gina a surprise engagement party. However, the couple is so busy arguing that they miss the whole thing. Snoop Dogg comes through because he was invited by his Uncle Jerome and takes the party to a whole new level. All the party attendees leave shortly before the couple arrives as they head off to L.A. with Snoop to keep it going.

3. Christopher “Kid” Reid

Christopher “Kid” Reid is one half of the iconic 90s duo Kid ‘n Play. The group is widely known for their films House Party, House Party 2 and Class Act. Reid appeared on Martin as the host of a competition for a fan to win a date with him. Hilariously, Sheneneh ends up being the winner and Kid decides he is unable to go through with it after seeing her in person. This rapper cameo led to one of the funniest moments of the series, Forever Sheneneh.

2. OutKast

outkast on martin

OutKast’s cameo on Martin came at a time when the South was just finding a way into mainstream hip hop success. In the episode All The Players Came, OutKast serves as the musical guest while Martin and the crew rally to save a local theatre. This is a guest-heavy episode that really showed admiration for the Black actors and actresses that paved the way for shows like Martin to exist. It featured appearances from Pam Grier, Antonio Fargas, Rudy Ray Moore, Whitman Mayo and Ja’net Dubois. It is also notable that the show was based in the East Coast and the episode came out in 1995. Later that year, the duo was booed after winning best new artist at The Source Awards.

1. The Notorious B.I.G.

Biggie’s appearance on Martin was one of the biggest cultural moments of the day. One of the most influential rappers of the 90s appeared on a top-rated Black sitcom. The episode focuses on Biggie’s search for background singers to take on tour with him. Martin is an old friend that lets Big stay with him to avoid commotion at a hotel. This allowed people to see the smooth personality that Biggie had in another format. There was no way we could make a list about our favorite rapper cameos on Martin without this taking the top spot.

Martin is a show that has consistently connected with generations of TV watchers for decades and one of the strongest pieces of its legacy is the excellent rapper cameos.

BET+ will begin streaming the Martin: The Reunion on June 16 with comedian Affion Crockett as the host. The first trailer dropped yesterday featuring a tribute to the character Tommy played by the late Thomas Mikal Ford.
