A post shared by OFFSET (@offsetyrn)

“My big Wave is [one] years old today, I love you big man!!” the post’s caption read. The Atlanta rapper’s post also included two recent photos of Wave enjoying himself on what appears to be a private plane. DJ Khaled, who has collaborated with Cardi B and Offset, celebrated Wave’s birthday in the comments, writing “God Did”. The comment is a reference to the producer’s latest album of the same name.

Offset also posted a photo of himself and his son taken during a shopping trip on Instagram. In the picture, Offset can be seen fixing the baby’s hat while Wave happily sits in the stroller.

Meanwhile, Cardi B took to her Instagram story on Saturday, showing a sweet picture of Wave making a funny face. “Happy 1st birthday Wave,” Cardi’s caption read. The “Bodak Yellow” artist also shared side-by-side photos of Offset and their son making serious facial expressions. “He got his daddies mean mug lol,” she added.

Cardi B and Offset discuss their family

Wave, born last September, is Cardi and Offset’s second child together. His older sister Kulture is four years old. Offset is also the father to three children from past relationships. In an interview with Essence in April, Offset and Cardi discussed their blended family.

“It’s a blessing to be able to have them all together, and to have a wife who’s open and treats them as if they’re her kids,” the “Clout” artist said. “It could be an issue, but I don’t have to go through that and that’s beautiful.”

Cardi offered her own insight on the family’s dynamic.

“I feel like sometimes people who go into a relationship with a man or a woman who has kids with negativity- and I feel like people should embrace it and love it,” the 29-year old stated. “I love our family and I wouldn’t want it any other way.”

Honoring Female Emcees in Hip-Hop: Past, Present, and Future

Female emcees, although not always given their due, are integral to hip hop’s rise, evolution, and continued expansion. In the words of Sha-Rock, Mother of the Mic,

“The women of hip hop have given our culture something to stand on, to be proud of, to say that this is not a man’s world. We were on the frontline and we built this culture as well.”

Sadly, the original female emcees don’t get as much mention as their male counterparts. But a house does not stand independent of its foundation. And a foundation is not replete without the entire molding of cement and brick, which work to sturdy a structure. And the foundation of hip-hop does not rest solely on male emcees alone but is comprised of male and female emcees who not only established but continue to shape the music and the culture.

Female Emcees Mid 70’s (Early Hip-Hop)

Hundreds of female emcees have contributed to hip hop, and the earliest female emcees date back to the mid-70s before the word hip hop was even a term used to describe the monolithic culture. In fact, one of the first female rap collectives, The Mercedes Ladies, hit the scene in 1976. In the 1980s, this group of talented ladies released “Don’s Groove.” Despite sharing the airwaves with some of their male contemporaries, they’ve rarely gained equity in recognition for their contribution.

Another little-known group to rise in the late ’70s went by the name The Sequence. Interestingly this group was also synonymous with some of the leading originators of hip hop. According to Hip Hop Golden Age,

“The Sequence traveled the world with the likes of Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, The Treacherous Three, Busy Bee, and more.”

Undeniably, a discussion on the origins of hip hop cannot be held without mentioning the likes of the Sugar Hill Gang and the Fab Five. However, despite the role 0f The Sequence as performers during the birth of the cultural movement alongside these monumental groups, their name also lacks equitable mention. So surely, there is no denying the travesty that underlines this lack of consideration. Sadly these two pioneering groups would not be the last to take the position of shadow figures in the hip-hop world.

Other Early Pioneers

Very little is often said of MC Sha-Rock, one of the first female emcees to make an impression as an addition to an all-male crew. MC Sha-Rock was a pivotal member of the Funky 4 +1. She was the plus one to a crew composed of Jazzy Jeff, Guy Williams, Keith Keith, and D.J. Breakout. And unsurprisingly, Sha-Rock was only 13 when she took the Mic. As it will become clear many of the female emcees of the forgone era were merely teenagers. Yet their representation on the stage was on par with their male counterparts.  Despite Sha-Rock’s youth, she was center stage in the Funky 4+1  1981 televised showcase on Saturday Night Live.

As evident, despite what many believe, the earlier years were not absent of Femme Fatales on the Mic. In fact, in 1984, a young MC named Roxanne Shante made her mark in hip-hop history at 14, and her talent was indisputable. Shante’s career took off after her response to the track “Roxanne Roxanne,” with ” Roxanne’s Revenge.” What is even more amazing,  it took one take for Shante to have the ears of the world. However, to keep the ears of the world, hustle and struggle became her constant companions. But earnestly, the path was not easy for any of these emcees. Proving yourself lyrically while protecting oneself from the whims of those who ruled in the male-dominated industry was a daily.

A Different Time

Inarguably the earlier years of hip hop were different times. Societal standards were different. Hip-hop was growing from its infancy, and artists, in general, were fighting for credibility and relevance in the industry. This only made the job of female emcees ten times as hard.   Demonstrating prowess above everything to stand toe to toe with the dominant figures of the time was critical. Roxanne once said of her earlier years,

“Male rappers felt like I was throwing things off. If the best in the game is a little girl, then rap will no longer be seen as masculine. She wasn’t only subverting the hierarchy of hip-hop, but the genre’s gender norms.”

For sure, there is no denying that even the initial track which led to Roxanne’s success was a well-crafted response to U.T.F.O.’s track where misogyny was the case. The U.T.F.O. track about a crew of men without much luck with a lady was the launching pad to the 14-Year-old Roxanne’s success. But despite the subject matter and how her peers saw her, Roxanne’s goal was to shine every time she stepped to the mic.  And Roxanne Shante wouldn’t be the first or last emcee to have to step up consistently to prove their mettle. Salt n Peppa (1985), MC Lyte (1988), Queen Latifah (1988), Antoinette (1989) Sister Soulja (1992) brought their brand of lyrical assault, pushing open door after door with every verse. However, with the passing of time and the expansion of hip-hop, the sacrifices females had to make for respect and notice shifted. With the increasing commercialization of rap, the industry standards for female emcees were rapidly evolving. The late 1990s marked the complete transformation, and Lil Kim and Foxy Brown were pivotal in that change.

Late 90’s to the Present

It is a known fact that the female emcees of the 90’s era took on the persona of the men who signed and groomed them. The male emcees Lil Kim (1995) camped with, primarily Christopher Wallace, aka Notorious, was crucial in shaping her image. According to hip-hop scriptures,

She [Kim] modeled her vocal flow after the very successful Biggie Smalls—adding grunts and ferocity—while her image revolved much more around sex appeal.

With each new artist, it was apparent that sexiness was becoming a critical factor in the signing and promotion of female emcees. Foxy Brown (1996), another industry peer from a different camp, subscribed to the same model of hyper-sexualization as Lil Kim. According to a spokesperson on My Mic Sound Nice: The Truth About Women and Hip Hop,

“Kim and Foxy were the sexual revolution of Hip-hop” (15:44)

Let’s Talk About Sex

Lil Kim: Image Source Getty Images

Some argue that emcees before Kim and Foxy were also purveyors of the erotic. While, on the surface, this seems true, there remains a stark difference. Truthfully,  emcees before Kim and Foxy didn’t stray away from subjects of sex and promiscuity. However, their lyricism, not their image, sold the point. The erotic appeal took a back seat to the message. Earlier female emcees held to a line they didn’t care to cross. One could say the response of the artists of the earlier era was shaped by the perception of females’ positioning throughout a male-dominated society. Respect in any occupation was earned. So, those emcees had to prove themselves lyrically or be perceived as a novelty act. While sex was a relevant topic, the artist spit from a contextual standpoint, the emphasis being on the lyricism, not the visuals. Being a sex symbol and expounding on the issue of sex were two separate things. As Roxanne stated in an interview with Billboard

” I didn’t want to be second best; I didn’t want to be the best girl — I wanted to be the best.”

Reframing of Success

Foxy Brown

Foxy Brown: Image Source Countess/WireImage

Artists like Lil Kim and Foxy Brown also had a desire to excel in hip hop. However, marketing for female emcees’ image to the mainstream media had changed. Kim and Brown were molded to fit nicely into the new niche. That standard was marketed worldwide. Consequently, established emcees faced a new struggle. According to female emcees Rah Digga, Eve, and Missy Elliot, who were already on, Kim and Foxy’s hypersexualized image put pressure on other emcees to conform.

Some artists did what they could to conform while others, like Missy Elliot and Lauryn Hill, carved out their lane.  These two were outliers, exceptions to the status quo. One thing, the 90s proved that while the template of acceptable standards changed, not much else had since the late 70s. In a 2016 interview, Salt of Salt and Peppa conferred,

“Hip hop is so misogynistic, masculine, if a woman doesn’t have anything unique that stands out amongst the male testosterone it is a difficult industry to survive in.”

In the Early 2000s

Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj: Image SourceDavid Fisher/Shutterstock

The 2000s didn’t see a shift in the new standard, yet it did see a shift in the number of female emcees represented in the commercial market. According to My Mic Sound Nice: The Truth about Women and Hip Hop, In the 2000s, there were fewer female opportunities for mainstream female emcees. Female emcees in the spotlight diminished significantly from 40 to about a dozen (28:17). As noted,

“It was hard to find female emcees of any worth with the backing of major labels.”

But, the issue was more profound than female emcees of worth. The industry was unwilling to invest time, energy, and capital into female artists’ marketing, promotion, and maintenance. The upkeep was unsavory to many labels, and the majority didn’t want the hassle. Regardless of the reduced numbers in the mainstream, some female emcees still found commercial success, Nicki Minaj, was one. Minaj took the Mic in 2007, representing everything the industry wanted. She had boundless sex appeal and talent. Some described her as a mix of Missy Elliot, Eve, and Lil Kim, making her the next level standard and a force majeure.

Mid 2000’s to Present

Cardi B: Image Source: Broadimage/Shutterstock

Cardi B and Megan “Thee” Stallion took their places behind the Mic in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Artists like Megan “Thee” Stallion and Cardi B followed a similar prototype as Nicki’s, eye candy and talent. However, as the next wave of artists, they upped the ante. These two used the industry’s desire to over-sexualize its artist and converted it into a platform of empowerment. They determined how the world would see them. As written in Medium

“Megan and Cardi both dance and dress in very sexual ways because it’s proven that sex sells, but they also did it to show they are proud to be women and are comfortable in their bodies.”

Despite the success of Megan and Cardi and the like, there is still heavy contention surrounding current success standards and hyper-sexualization’s role. The prominence of sexuality as a selling point has proven an obstacle for many female emcees, as Lizzo has openly spoken. The after-effects are alarming and have proven detrimental. In an industry where sexiness is essential untenable standards are met with acts of extremism, mental pathologies, and extreme dysmorphias. Inevitably this potentiates an unsustainable model, in the long run, indicating a dire need for artists to speak out and revolutionize the industry.

The Future of the Female Emcee

There are no fewer emcees now than there were years ago. According to Ranker, over 30 female emcees proudly represent the top tier of mainstream currently. Even more emcees represent in the underground. And undoubtedly, many legacy makers still stand as significant cultural influencers. So as Missy exclaims, the future of female emcees is not going anywhere despite the indeterminate nature of the direction and branding.

To reiterate Sha-Rock, words.

“The women of hip hop have given our culture something to stand on, something to be proud of, something to say that this is not a man’s world, that we built this culture as well.”

Building a sustainable legacy never stops. So as long as hip-hop culture exists, female emcees will be there to contribute, take the Mic, and tell their stories.

Cardi Claps Back

Fans seem to always come at Cardi B on social media.  Once in a while Cardi has time to clap back.  She had time on Friday.  A fan urged her to pay more attention to her kids rather than social media.  The fan then went on to say her daughter, Kulture, has autism. Cardi responded by tweeting that the fan was only saying this because her daughter isn’t ugly.  People have to call her something.  Cardi is tired of y’all coming for her kids!  Bardi Gang came to her defense and even pointed out the fact that having autism is not an insult.

Cardi Tries

The girl from the Bronx is out here doing a lot throughout all the nonsense!  In her latest episode of her TV series, Cardi Tries, she tried being a firefighter.  Comedian Lilly Singh joins her as they experience the life of firemen.  They learn how to put out fires, perform CPR, and put oxygen masks on people.  Their end test was a fire drill to see if they could use the skills they learned.  The City of Monrovia fire department gave the duo real life firefighting training. You can catch the series on Facebook.  So far, Cardi has learned to play football and make chocolate bonbons. The special guests have been Megan thee Stallion and Teyana Taylor.

HOT 97’s Summer Jam 2022 Was NOT Spoiled By Bad Weather

Good thing the rain held up at Hot 97 Summer Jam this year.  It usually always rains at MetLife stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.  This year, Summer Jam was an all-day event.  Yes, almost 10 hours of nonstop hip-hop.  The star-studded concert always has a festival stage for the new and upcoming artists outside of the stadium.  The main stage, inside MetLife, is for the big acts.

Festival Stage

NY artist K. Goddess started the day off on the festival stage. She was the winner of last year’s Hot 97’s “Who’s Next” competition, but she didn’t get to perform because of the pandemic.  She finally got her moment and seized it!  The Girll Codee, Cordae, Bleu, Saucy Santana, Babyface Ray, Nardo Wick and Jnr Choi also blazed the festival stage.  Hot 97’s DJ Drewski brought out New York’s own Nems to perform as well as B-Lovee and Dougie B.  Surprisingly, Cardi B jumped on stage with the latter two to perform their hit “Shake It.”

https://twitter.com/bu_media/status/1536107138212417539?s=21&t=uO_ShbETnTtGeElJQhc1Kg

MetLife Stage

After Cardi B surprised fans, the show moved to inside MetLife Stadium. DreamDoll went first as she brought out her fellow Bronx native Capella Grey to perform their song “You Know My Body.”  She also had CJ come out to perform his hit “Whoopty.”  Shenseea came up next followed by Benny the Butcher.  The Buffalo native rocked his 20 minute set.

Roddy Ricch Performs

Fans were happy to see Roddy Ricch make it after he missed his Governor’s Ball set over the weekend.  On Saturday, he was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, possession of a large capacity ammunition feeding device as well as unlawful possession of the device.  Yesterday, the charges were dropped, and he was able to perform, even bringing a special guest, DJ Mustard.

One of the greatest things about the night was the DJ Kay Slay tribute.  The HOT 97 family came together on stage to pay their respects to the prominent DJ before the select artists performed.  Jim Jones, Maino, The L.O.X. Papoose, Busta Rhymes, Remy Ma, and Juelz Santana all hit the stage in honor of Kay Slay.  All these artists have a warm spot for Kay Slay in their hearts as they have worked with him throughout their careers.

Protect Black Art

As the day turned to night, Pusha T took over the stage.  His set included songs from his most recent album as well as his hits with the Clipse, most notably “Grindin.”  Atlanta rapper Lil Baby took the stage next to perform a lot of his hits. His friends Young Thug and Gunna were not present, but YSL was still in the building.  A message from Young Thug was played thanking his fans and assuring them he is okay.  After Lil Baby, it was Lil Durk’s time to perform as he brought out Nardo Wick and Meek Mill.

Meek Mill took the opportunity to shed light on what is going on in the state of hip hop.  He discussed the “Protect Black Art” campaign, which will help to stop courts from using song lyrics as evidence. Meek mentions how a lot of other rappers including himself can be put in the same position as Young Thug and Gunna if the petition doesn’t get signed.

King of New York

The headliner of the night was Fivio Foreign.  He closed the show out in style with appearances from Jnr Choi, Coi Leray, and Chloe Bailey. He ended the show with a plethora of people on stage as he performed “Big Drip”.  A great night for hip hop like always.  So many artists and so many great performances!  And most importantly, the weather held up!

Celina Powell Sentenced To 2 Years In Prison

Notorious social media personality Celina Powell was sentenced to two years in prison for violating her probation. Powell, who is well known in the hip hop community for ‘clout chasing’, was arrested in 2015 for driving a getaway car in a theft.

According to prosecutors, Powell has continually violated the terms of her probation by refusing to take drug and alcohol tests. Ultimately, this resulted in her arrest last month when she failed to appear in court.

As a result, Powell will serve her sentence in a Colorado prison and will be eligible for parole in December.

In March 2021, Powell was also arrested in Miami for making an illegal turn. Though she was let off with a warning, she was taken into custody after police discovered her license was suspended. She was then charged and taken to jail.

Who is Celina Powell?

Originally from Denver, Powell rose to social media fame through her YouTube channel where she described her alleged encounters with hip hop stars. She has claimed to have slept with multiple rappers, including Snoop Dogg, Offset, Drake and Young Thug. She even admitted to falsifying a paternity test alleging that Offset had impregnated her.

In 2021, a text thread between Powell and Drake made its way online. The screenshots, shared by No Jumper‘s Adam22, show Powell identifying herself to the rapper before being caught in a lie.

“Def never gave u my number,” Drizzy allegedly wrote. “I know who u are. I want nooooo parts.”

“Welp okay. N yes you did [give me your number]. It’s still in my DM,” Powell responded. However, “Drake” appears to send Powell a screenshot disproving her claim.

“Doesn’t look like it, lol,” he texted.

“I just wanted you to open my DMs,” Powell wrote back. “Thanks, I don’t wanna get blocked sooo I’ll exit now.”

Cardi B also came for Powell after the social media personality claimed Offset paid her $50,000 to get an abortion. The “Bodak Yellow” artist shared a screenshot of headlines where Powell supposedly admitted to lying about the pregnancy.

In a since deleted tweet, Powell wrote: “I’m getting dragged for s*** that happened two years ago both Drake and Cardi B happened two years ago…thank God he’s giving me something to laugh at instead of being sad today.”

Cardi B Makes Return To Social Media

Cardi B has made her return to social media after deactivating her accounts last week. The “WAP” artist took a break from social media after clashing with a few of her fans on Twitter.

Members of the Bardi Gang were upset over Cardi B’s absence from the Grammy Awards ceremony. This resulted in a few comments toward the superstar’s children, which didn’t go unnoticed by Cardi.

“I’m deleting my Twitter On God I hate this fu**ing dumb*** fan base,” Cardi said at the time. “You got the slow dumba***s dragging my kids all cause y’all [thought] I was going to the Grammys and I didn’t the fu**?.”

Shortly after the disagreement, Cardi B explained her decision to delete her Twitter account on Instagram live.

“Why would I show up with one nomination?,” the rapper questioned. “And I lost it anyways, so you wanted me to go to the Grammys, lose an award, and me just be there smiling like, ‘That’s great, that’s great’. Like, come on now my ni**a.”

Cardi B’s social media presence

Cardi B’s return to social media comes right before her collab with Kay Flock, “Shake It,” drops on Friday. A seven-second clip from the track’s music video has gone viral on social media over the last few days. A clip of the song has reached almost 6 million views on Twitter.

This year, Cardi B has also collaborated with Summer Walker and SZA on “No Love (Extended).” As a solo artist, Cardi hasn’t released a single since 2021’s “Up.” 2021 also saw the Bronx rapper team up with Normani and Lizzo for “Wild Side” and “Rumors,” respectively.

As of this morning, Cardi B’s verified social media pages are online once again. The Invasion of Privacy artist currently has 17 million followers on Twitter and 127 million followers on Instagram.

The World Wants to See Cardi’s Baby Son!

Offset and Cardi sure have been private about their second baby. Although the world is no stranger to Kulture, their son was born in September of last year.

Cardi tweeted about her son teething which prompted one fan to point out that she’s never shown her son’s face. Cardi responded by tweeting a picture of her son’s eye, in which fans took an opportunity to troll.

No More Social Media for Cardi

Cardi also didn’t appreciate that as she questioned whether she should get off social media.

However, in the end the rapper changed her mind.

This is nothing for Cardi B, as she did the leaving social media thing after winning her first Grammy award. Fans criticized whether Cardi should’ve won the award for the “Invasion of Privacy” album.

Also, she took a hiatus from social media when she and Offset separated. Fans not only came after the tweet of her son’s eye, but they also accused her of trying to steal the limelight from Nicki Minaj. Nicki was trending on Twitter around the same time Cardi posted that picture.

Cardi’s Husband & Babies

Offset and Cardi’s son may be their last child. Recently, Cardi posted a video on Instagram of Kulture stating she doesn’t want any more siblings. She’s thrilled with her new baby brother.

Cardi certainly seems like a great mother, as we see her on social media. She doesn’t even have a babysitter as she doesn’t trust anyone with her kids.

New Music

In the meantime, before her single drops, we may be hearing Cardi on a feature soon. Cardi may have linked up with Big Latto for a track. Latto previewed a new single, and there is supposedly a guest feature on it. Fans instantly threw Cardi’s name in the hat for the guest feature, claiming it sounded like a beat she would execute.

Latto and Cardi have been in touch recently, but she’s also claimed she is a huge fan of Nicki Minaj, so maybe it’s Nicki. Who knows? Latto ft. Cardi or Latto ft. Nicki? I guess we’ll find out tomorrow when it drops.

Celebrities Showed Out On The 2021 AMA Red Carpet

The highly anticipated American Music Awards took place last night. On its red carpet, celebrities showed out in their most stylish outfits for the occasion. Although we are used to seeing the stars wearing unique looks, it seems as though they opted for more classy looks for the night.

Cardi B AMAs red carpet 2021

The night’s host, Cardi B, leads the pack in a very artsy look by Schiaparelli. Her gold mask, matching nails, and a black veil was a head-turner.

Red Carpet Slays

Singing sister duo Chloe and Halle wore pretty velvet numbers with cutouts. While Chloe wore classic black, Halle wore Chocolate. They also wore simple jewelry to go along with them.

Chloe Bailey AMAs red carpet 2021Halle Bailey AMAs red carpet 2021

Gunna is increasingly known for his fashion sense. He also stepped out in velvet. True to his rock star-inspired style, he showed up in a velvet suit with an open black shirt, studded cowboy boots, and sunglasses.

Gunn AMAs red carpet 2021

Latin superstar Bad Bunny also wore another favorite look of mine. Instead of being formal like everyone else, he popped out in a very urban look. His bubble coat, white tank top, grey trousers, and cloth slippers screamed streetwear. To complete his red carpet outfit, Bad Bunny wore a pair of white sunglasses, messy buns, and layered jewelry.

Compared to his usual out-there looks, Machine Gun Kelly wore something toned down. He wore a studded leather top, wide-leg pants, black boots, and his favorite–nail polish. The best accessory of the night, however, was his 12-year-old daughter Casie. Casie showed up with her dad in a simple black dress.
