Soaring Beats And Silver Screens: Method Man Returns To Film In “How I Learned to Fly”

Method Man is poised to appear in an upcoming gripping and emotionally charged film helmed by the talented director Simon Steuri. The trailer for this cinematic masterpiece is nothing short of moving.

Method Man: A Hip-Hop Icon’s Journey

Method is a legend in the hip-hop community, earning his status due to his expressive and creative talent behind the mic. The indomitable “Iron Lungs’ entered the spotlight as a founding member of the iconic Wu-Tang Clan

For aficionados of the genre, the mere mention of Method Man brings up a flood of nostalgic memories, particularly harking back to one of the classics withstanding the test of time — “C.R.E.A.M/Da Mystery of Chessboxin.”

In this iconic track, Method Man’s lyrical finesse and distinctive style shine brightly. It is he who lays down the memorable chorus etched in the collective memory of fans: “Cash Rules Everything Around Me/C.R.E.A.M. get the Money/Dollar dollar bill y’all.”

Diverse Artistic Paths

As his musical journey marked the inception of Method Man’s career, it served as a prelude to the diverse paths he and fellow Clan members would explore. Beyond his solo endeavors in music, “Johnny Blaze” would swerve into various lanes, including the television and film industry. Method Man’s foray into acting began in 1996 with his role in “The Great White Hype,” setting the stage for a prolific career spanning both television and film.

According to IMDB, his acting credits now stand at an impressive 133, with his most recent contribution being in “Power: Book II Ghost.” Nevertheless, his trajectory continues, with an upcoming role in the feature film “How I Learned to Fly,” where he is set to portray the character Cliff Davis

“How I Learned to Fly”

The film’s title aptly captures the essence of its storyline. As the synopsis relays, the narrative revolves around two brothers. They must metaphorically learn to soar after the abandonment by their parents. Describing the emotional impact, Urbanbridgez notes,

“Deeply haunted by the mental and physical abuse inflicted by their father (Cliff “Method Man” Smith), elder brother Daniel (Marcus Scribner) is determined to prevent their lives from falling apart.”

It is so emotional and relatable that the plot pulls at the heartstrings. What adds an extra layer of poignancy is the film’s reflective nature.

Simon Steuri’s Debut: A Personal Journey

Emerging as a promising creative talent from Switzerland, Simon Steuri marks his feature film debut with “How I Learned to Fly.” “How I Learned to Fly” is an inspired piece, drawing inspiration from his life. According to Urbanbridgez’s Steuri relays, “The journey of this film started in his childhood in the sparsely populated back-country of Switzerland. He notes that “in the 80s, they didn’t have the medical terminology to describe a child like him. He was highly gifted yet socially withdrawn, unable to communicate with others…inspired by light and color. And yet deathly afraid of people. But those years of isolation and fear have made him into the man he is. And he wanted to tell that child’s story.”

Switzerland may seem worlds apart for some. However, despite geographical and cultural differences, the universality of the narrative and its themes underscores the profound connection that binds us, transcending divides.

“How I Learned to Fly:” The Cast

A talented ensemble has been selected to bring this story to the masses. Other than Method, the cast will include Marcus Scribner (Daniel Davis), Lonnie Chavis (Eli Davis), Cedric the Entertainer (Louis), and Crystal Bush (Dorothee Davis), to name a few. And the trailer speaks volumes of what these talented people bring to the screen.

Method Man Keeps Shining

The captivating narrative of “How I Learned to Fly” adds yet another feather to the cap of the multi-talented Clifford Smith, known as Method Man. With a prolific career spanning music and film, Method Man consistently enriches his repertoire. He demonstrates the enduring brilliance of those who bear the mantle of hip-hop. This film is not merely another film. It is a testament to Method Man’s versatility and showcases the depth of talent within the hip-hop community. That earns a nod from FMHipHop.

FMHipHop will continue to share as these gifted individuals continue to bring their stories to the screen. They not only entertain. But they contribute to the rich cultural tapestry of hip-hop. And each project proves its lasting impact and influence in the realms of both music and cinema.

Method Man and Redman To Perform at Financial Super Conference “Future Proof”

This week’s big event is a financial super conference, “Futureproof,” with Hip-hop’s finest as headliners. And it sounds astonishing.

Future Proof

This week in Huntington Beach, some of the most prominent financial minds in the world are hosting a super conference, “Futureproof.”  And this conference is designed to be an unforgettable event. The conference, widely recognized as one of the world’s largest wealth festivals, has drawn the attention of financial enthusiasts and industry experts alike. And this year, hip-hop legends Method Man and Redman will perform as honored guests to add an extra layer of excitement.

Future Proof Brings Hip-Hop to the Financial World

For enthusiasts of the finance world, “Futureproof” will be a conference like no other. While it’s not a novel concept, this year’s edition is poised to stand out. According to CNBC,

it’s an event where social engagement holds as much significance as the substantive content. And in 2023, hip-hop is set to be a defining element.

But what prompted this shift in format, and why incorporate hip-hop?

The masterminds behind the event, Barry Rithotz, and Josh Brown, were motivated by a desire to inject fresh energy into the conference scene. In the words of Rithotz,

“Audiences were growing weary of monotonous lectures and lengthy panel discussions predicting the future within the confines of massive, windowless conference centers. So, they envisioned a gathering that would be more sociable, interactive, beneficial, and enjoyable.”

And what better way to ignite enthusiasm and inspire attendees than by infusing the event with some out-of-the-box activities and the dynamic energy of hip-hop?

Futureproof: Events

The agenda is remarkably innovative and promises surprises that few would anticipate. Among the diverse lineup of activities, attendees will find Seaside Yoga sessions led by a Goldman Sachs Instructor, highlighting the event’s focus on holistic well-being. There’s the “Health is Wealth Surfing” experience for those seeking an adrenaline rush. Dance enthusiasts can groove to the rhythm in salsa dance sessions. And connoisseurs of spirits can engage in the spirited “Battle of the Buds: Wine vs. Craft Beer.”

But Wait, There’s So Much More

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Attendees can also get hands-on with a pizza-making class and a sushi-making session, adding a delightful culinary twist to the conference. And for the traditionalists who crave financial insights, there’s a wealth of knowledge from esteemed speakers such as Dan Ives from Wedbush and Jeff Gundlach of DoubleLine. Also on deck are Christine Benz, Jeffrey Ptak, Ben Johnson, and Nizar Tarhun of Morningstar. While Michael Batnick and Ben Carlson of Ritholtz Wealth Management will provide insight. And to top it off, there’s a panel discussion on “Global Macro Predictions.”

Hip hop and Finance

While hip-hop and the financial sector might appear to be in different realms, they are often intertwined. Many of hip-hop’s elite artists and figures are talented musicians and astute entrepreneurial strategists with strong financial acumen. Many hip-hop artists also have diversified their income streams through ventures such as fashion lines, record labels, tech startups, and investments in various industries. This is primarily because they recognize the importance of wealth generation and financial empowerment within the hip-hop subculture and society. This extends to using their platform to promote financial literacy, encourage entrepreneurship, and address socioeconomic disparities. Hip-hop and the financial sector share common ground in their pursuit of economic success and financial empowerment. This makes it clear that these seemingly distinct worlds intersect and influence each other.

Method Man, a Businessman

Method Man, whose real name is Clifford Smith, has earned a reputation as a savvy investor. His foray into the business world includes a notable venture in 2019 when he delved into the world of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) by launching MEFaverse. And what is MEFaverse? According to Capitalism,

it’s a fully gamified rendition of a comic book that operates within the Web 3 ecosystem. MEFaverse is a multifaceted project encompassing aspects of eCommerce, advertising, hip-hop culture, technology, pop culture, entertainment, and music. It’s designed to provide an income stream for independent holders without relying on secondary market sales.

Furthermore, Method Man has also diversified his investments into the cannabis market. In 2020, the Wu-Tang Clan alum founded TICAL (Taking into Consideration All Lives). What is TICAL? TICAl is an entrepreneurial venture dedicated to selling marijuana to black-owned dispensaries. So, if anyone knows the importance of understanding the ins and outs of the financial world, it is Smith.

Futureproof Proof: Hip-hop and Finance Go Hand and Hand

Hip-hop is more than just music. Hip-hop is a cultural phenomenon with a pervasive influence across all facets of society. This influence is perfectly exemplified by showcasing some of hip-hop’s most influential figures at a conference dedicated to fostering financial acumen, literacy, growth, and independence. Not only is it something to look forward to, but it also promises a massive takeaway. As CNBC notes,

who knows what could happen? Maybe Method Man will announce Wu-Tang Clan is going on tour and is launching an ETF.

Method Man Latest Icon To Be Open About Battles With Depression

Method man needs no introduction. As a legendary artist and foundational member of the Wu-Tang Clan, his name precedes him. Despite his status, much of his personal life remains largely under wraps. However, over the years, he has become more and more open with the public. Recently, he revealed yet another part of his personal life that can be an enormous inspiration to others.

Method Man Opens Up To Men’s Health

In a recent “Mens Health” interview, Method Man had much to say. One topic he addressed was a lighter one: Method’s designation as a sex symbol. While this is a title, many would readily accept, not so with Method Man.

According to the artist, his perceptive reality doesn’t align with the title. Method Man appreciates the designation. However, he doesn’t see himself as a sex symbol. “I’m not a sex symbol,” Method blatantly claimed in an interview.

Why this may shock some, according to Method, he affixes his thoughts on things much more essential to his core identity. As he went on to say, “the love he had to learn to accept was of himself.”

That carries more significance and trumps any adoration showered on Method Man via external means.

Method Man Reaches Into The Dark

In his interview, the artist also explored darker periods in his life with a timely reach. Method Man attributes that dark stretch to living with depression. It was a state which had become a constant companion.

In fact, it became so insidious for years that he could not even identify or label it. As Method notes, “I didn’t even know I had been depressed since I was a youngster before I started making music and moved to Staten Island.”

That’s not atypical. For many, it’s not always easy to identify depression; it’s even harder to emerge from the shadows. Admittedly, that’s a battle that takes massive endurance. But the road to healing always starts with recognizing there is a problem. And the” All I Need” artist admits that a long battle with insomnia alerted him, spurring him to make changes.

Getting To The Root

While many make the discovery, not everyone can identify the root.

However, discovering the source is essential to complete healing. A healthy tree can’t grow from a poisoned root. Method is one of the few who has identified the basis of his suffering and the bane to his mental health.

According to the performer, he believes depression stems from early childhood. Method now recognizes the trauma and PTSD that arose from his upbringing and the mentality he developed in his young adulthood.

Healing

Method Man mentions two essential parts of his depression healing: an exercise regime and a change in mindset. According to the artist, after noticing that he dealt with PTSD, he changed his trajectory by controlling how he saw himself. As BET cites the artist as saying, “I stopped valuing other people’s opinions, and instead of being my biggest critic, I became my biggest fan.”

What Do We Glean

It’s a challenge to admit darker struggles in one’s life. And it’s even harder for icons to be transparent. But transparency helps form connectedness. And those genuinely outstanding people maintain a connection with the core of who they are despite their status.

Method Man is one such individual. He’s a model for transformation. His vulnerability in admitting his areas of weakness, working to be strengthened, and then telling his story so others can learn from it is commendable. It is certainly what we need more of.

Power Book II Returns With Trailer For Long-Awaited Season 3

Power Book II: Ghost is returning to our screens next month on St. Patrick’s Day. A release date fit for Tariq St. Patrick, played by Michael Rainey Jr., who teased us with a new trailer on his Instagram.

The long-awaited season 3 continues to follow Tariq in New York, but it looks like his luck is wearing thin.

Tariq Image Change

The trailer shows shots fired at a funeral (which we all can assume is Zeke’s) and the first few seconds Davis MacLean, played by Method Man, warning St. Patrick about his “image.”

MacLean says — “a suit does a lot for an image, Tariq. But it won’t fool the people still watching… your every move.” Then St. Patrick answers with “I made it this far, right?”

The Tejada Family Grieves While Tariq Finds New Market

In addition, Tariq James St. Patrick comes to a revelation and creates a new lane for money to come through… Wall Street. This epiphany arrives as the Tejada family grieve their cousin, or brother after Monet’s — played by Mary J. Blidge — confession, Zeke’s death.

Consequently leading to the blossoming drug kingpin invading Wall Street’s financial district to move product. However, some similarities spark — as we all know Tariq was trying to run from the ghost of his father — and it looks like the nightclub scene is exactly where he will end up.

Is Tariq Following Ghost’s Footsteps?

Therefore the legacy does remind us and his fictional grandmother in the dramatic clip, “I’m not like my dad… I’m smarter than him.” But time will tell as we watch Tariq’s future intensify right before our eyes.

According to The Wrap, Starz promises this season will be “flashier, sexier, and juicier” than anything we’ve seen yet. I guess the strip club scene in the trailer is a hint for what is to come. We also see Brayden whipping out a gun in a close-up shot, Monet aiming hers at someone multiple times, and Tariq having one aimed at him as usual.

It seems it will be extreme, and I’d like to say we are all ready for season 3.

Season 4?

According to Variety, 50 Cent’s Power Book II got an early season 4 renewal. Hopefully this means the wait won’t be too long this time between seasons…

Method Man On Link Between Violent Death and Hip Hop Culture

November 4th, in an off-the-cuff moment, a reporter addressed Method Man inquiring about his perspective on the links between countless deaths of hip-hop artists and the culture. Method’s response was pointed and timely.

Takeoff’s Death: The Impact

Breaking news of Takeoff’s death caught the world by surprise. The community was still recovering from the passing of PnB Rock, who also lost his life to gun violence. Knowing that the culture lost two promising artists in less than two months was hard to swallow. The community as a collective had a lot to reflect on.

In the most typical fashion, several artists poured out their hearts to the public, displaying a range of emotions, from raw anger to devastation.

Unfortunately, such events rub raw emotions and bring up unwanted questions. In the wake of Takeoff’s death, one pointed question reared its ugly head once again. Is hip-hop culture to be blamed? As this ideology seemed to gain prominence, the media looked to other artists within the industry for clarity. Method Man was one artist who was asked to offer a perspective.

Method Man On Hip Hop Culture And Violent Deaths

A day ago, Method man was accosted and inquired about his position on the link between Hip hop culture and the upheaval in violent deaths. Method Man wasn’t particularly keen on engaging in the subject. But he didn’t outright withhold his opinion, either. When asked if he felt anything had changed since the early days of hip-hop, a bewildered Method jokingly added, “Yea, the clothes.” But, of course, there was a deeper subtext to the reporter’s questioning. And, when pressed for a more definitive response regarding his feelings on the link between hip-hop and the countless death of rap artists, Method made it clear.

“I have no opinion about shootings and how they happen because the circumstances always point to hip-hop, and it’s not always our fault, period.”

What Does Method Man’s Response Show?

While it is rational for people to seek answers for unfathomable things in the wake of unexpected tragedy, it’s best not to ask specific questions for some time. There is a time and place for everything. As artists like Method have shown, perhaps their perspective is not the most pertinent at this moment.

Indeed, there is great fatigue around a line of questioning that does not separate correlation from causation. And what comes of the opinion of those who have spoken but more speculation and frustration?

So this raises the question, would not time be more appropriately spent directing energies toward support and reflection at this time? And given that, is it not of more significant benefit to shift focus to acts such as those shown by 50 Cent?

Curtis Jackson’s (50 Cent) Message To Quavo

In exemplary fashion, Curtis Jackson, who is making strides to be a change in the world via his BMF docuseries, reached out to Take-Off’s family to offer his condolences. In addition, Jackson took the time to pour into Quavo in a time of unspeakable grief. The industry icon even went on to provide a suggestion for maintaining Takeoff’s legacy. His advice:

This is really how it goes @quavohuncho you have to position this Album correctly for Take Offs Legacy, go make a couple changes and address everything all artist make the best music out of painful moments. R.I.P to pop smoke 🕊R.I.P to TakeOff #bransoncognac #lecheminduroi

Of course, Fifty is not the only one who has taken the time to build up, show love, and honor the memory of Takeoff and the countless others who have fallen.

In Conclusion

Takeoff’s death was inane. Inarguably, there is no justifiable cause. And today, because of another senseless act of violence, there is a hole in the heart of hip-hop. The culture as a collective is in mourning.

Undoubtedly, the time will come to address the systemic rot. An issue such as this is too pervasive to go unaddressed. However, there is a season, time, and place for everything. It may not be the time to ask or focus on individualized opinions and perspectives. Today might be a time for unity, light, love, and collective healing.

Top Ten Cultural Films Proving Hip Hop Artists Can Act Too

There was a time when Hip hop and Hollywood were seen as two separate lanes. The idea was preposterous when hip-hop/rap artists expressed a desire to cross over to Hollywood. Those who dared cross the lane were perceived to be inauthentic and mocked for their inability to choose one route and stick to it. The only movies that featured hip-hop and rap artists taken seriously were those constructed around the art form, such as Wild Style (1982) and Beat Street (1984). As the progression of our material world has proven, one never knows how great something can be until it’s done. And over time, artists have demonstrated that hip hop artist in Hollywood is hardly a joke. Talent is rarely linear. More often, genuine artists possess a multitude of skills.

Top Ten: From Hip-Hop to Hollywood Films

While many hip-hop artists have shown top-caliber skills in acting, others failed miserably, leading many to wonder why hip-hop/rap artists didn’t stay in their lane. However, this is life, and we must take the good with the bad. So here is a list of movies starring hip-hop/rap artists who nailed their performance to those that will forever live in infamy.

#10 Snoop/Method Man Soul Plane

The number ten spot for movies featuring a hip hop/rap artist goes to Soul Plane. Soul Plane was a film that premiered in 2004. The hour and 26-minute comedy about an airline owned and staffed by African Americans featured artists Snoop Dogg and Method Man. Other notable comedians in the industry rounded out the cast. One can argue Snoop played his role to perfection. The Dogg Father did what he did the best play himself. His smooth, laid-back demeanor as Captain Mack was his signature. Snoop has more than learned how to use his persona in Hollywood to his advantage. As Highsnobiety notes,

” Though Snoop has 163 acting credits, most of those appearances can be viewed as extensions of his brand. Often, he plays himself.”

Nevertheless, despite the hilarity, Soul Plane was not Oscar-worthy material, so it rests in the number ten spot.

# 9 Will Smith Wild Wild West

Undoubtedly, Will Smith has become recognized as one of the most versatile in the industry. Will has been a trailblazer in many instances. But for those who do and do not remember, one of Smith’s first serious roles was Six Degrees of Separation (1993). While it was one of the first instances that Will was able to exercise his acting chops on the silver screen, the most memorable of his earlier works was Wild Wild West. The 1999 film departed from his earlier drama and featured him in the lead role. Unfortunately, Wild Wild West was also one of his worst films to date and one he has too regretted. Smith told the Hollywood Reporter in a 2021 interview, “Wild Wild West is a thorn in my side.” Unfortunately, the bubblegum western came off as a farce. However, Smith lived it down and became one of the most prominent hip-hop artists turned actors. Good thing Smith’s entire career wasn’t predicated on this film.

#8 Big Boi & Andre 3000 Idlewild

The number eight spot goes to Idlewild, starring members of Outkast Big Boi and Andre 3000. Idlewild centered on small-town life in the deep south during the era of prohibition. But on a deeper level, the film explored the relationship between two friends traversing that terrain dealing with love, expectations, friends, and the come up from different perspectives. While a low-key movie compared to most, Idlewild allowed Big Boi and Andre to display the full range of their talents, proving that just as on stage, their flare and creativity were suited for more than the sound booth.

# 7 Full Cast Carmen Hip Hopera

Carmen Hip Hopera is one of the lesser known movies; however, it is one of the best revisioning of a classic film starring a predominantly hip-hop cast. Until Carmen Hip Hopera, few films boasted a primary hip-hop cast, let alone used the performer to recreate a classic movie for a wider audience. This film was a 2001 offering directed by Robert Townsend. Yasiin Bey (Mos Def), Rah Digga, Wyclef Jean, Da Brat, Jermaine Dupri, Shad Moss (Bow Wow), Beyonce, and Mekhi Phifer made up the cast. Impressively this group of talented performers was able to reshape the story of Carmen into a hip-hop work of art, displaying not only their acting talent but also their musical talent.

#6 Tupac Shakur – Juice

Juice takes the number six spot. This 1992 film is one of the best cultural films to be produced. Tupac Shakur, who played the role of Bishop, a no-nonsense dealer in the 1990s street of New York, proved that rappers could be serious actors. Tupac’s delivery was on point, and his poise was unmatchable. With this performance, it was undeniable that Tupac could effortlessly move through both worlds. Of relative importance was what the film did for the perception of hip-hop overall. As Independent notes,

“Juice was equally crucial for showing how uniquely enmeshed movie and rap stardom could become. “

#5 Kid n Play House Party

House party is hands down a hip-hop cult classic. Hip hop artist Kid n Play did their thing in the 1990 iconic comedy, making it one of the most memorable films. While neither Kid nor Play’s performances were Oscar-worthy, their performances were authentic. The chemistry was unforgettable, with Martin Lawrence, Tisha Campbell, A.J. Johnson, and Robin Harris rounding out the cast. The culture loved it, accepting the film for what it was, an iconic moment in cinematic history celebrating hip-hop on the silver screen. And the acting wasn’t half-bad.

#4 Queen Latifah –Set it Off

Set it Off falls in the top five movies starring a hip-hop artist. Set it off premiered in 1996, and it was fire. Queen Latifah showed the world how it was done. Her performance, along with the performances of the other three leading ladies, was noteworthy. No one could doubt whether each poured their essence into the characters of Stony, Cleo, Frankie, and Tisean because It showed. These women were as authentic and touchable as any. In fact, it was difficult to tell the character apart from the actor. And if it hadn’t been obvious before now, it was plain that Queen had what it takes to make it big in Hollywood. As a testament to her talent, according to Highsnobiety

“With almost one hundred acting credits and nearly fifty producing credits to her name, Queen Latifah is now a Hollywood titan.”

https://youtu.be/f_cbkxnbiqQ

# 3 Tupac Shakur Poetic Justice

While Tupac has been mentioned before, he again gains mention for his role in the cultural favorite, Poetic Justice.  This 1993 John Singleton film wherein Tupac Shakur played the character of Lucky. This film, which premiered only a year after Juice, depicted Pac differently. In Poetic Justice, Tupac played the love interest of none other than Janet Jackson. While he remained rough around the edges, the character of Lucky depicted a man gentler in nature, a vast difference from Bishop. Poetic Justice was demonstrative of Pac’s range. If no one else had proved that rap artists could act, he did.

#2 Ice Cube –Friday

Friday is iconic. Ice Cube and Chris Tucker created a brand of magic on film that can’t be duplicated. This cultural favorite is arguably one of the most quoted films in hip-hop culture. While the film was pure comedy, Cube and Tucker hit every cue. Given what is known of Ice Cube, he is one of the few rap artists other than Tupac and Will Smith who have proven that some hip-hop artists could also dominate Hollywood.

#1 Ice Cube –Boyz N the Hood

The number one movie is none other than Singleton’s classic Boys N The Hood. This 1991 Drama cemented Ice Cube as a noteworthy actor. Cube took his place amongst some of the best in the business Angela Basset, Laurence Fishburne, Morris Chestnut, and Cuba Gooding Jr. He demonstrated he was up to the task. And now, according to Highsnobiety, “Ice Cube has over 60 acting credits to his name spanning almost thirty years.” With that in mind, it is more than sure Boyz n The Hood proved that if no other rapper in the business could carry a role, Ice Cube could.

Hip Hop/ Rap Artist in Hollywood Are No Joke

Many more movies spotlight hip hop/rap artists, highlighting their talents beyond the mic. Although this list is nowhere near exhaustive, it is more than enough to confirm that hip-hop artists in Hollywood are legit, even in films that fall lower on the tier. But, of course, proper judgment can only be predicated on individual merit alone.

Happy 30th Anniversary! Best Rapper Cameos on ‘Martin’

Happy 30th Anniversary to a cultural masterpiece! The Martin reunion show is now streaming on BET+ and has brought to mind many of the standout rapper cameos on the series. These rapper cameo appearances are significant for being some of the earliest instances of rappers appearing on a broadcast television series.

Let’s take a look at our 8 favorite rapper cameos that appeared on Martin.

8. Method Man

Method Man is no stranger to appearing in TV and film in the current stage of his career. However his cameo on Martin was his first opportunity to flex his acting chops. In the episode he plays a burglar robbing Martin’s apartment that plays along with an ongoing beef between Martin and Pam to make off with the goods.

7. Bushwick Bill

Bushwick Bill on Martin

Bushwick Bill of The Geto Boys had a cameo on Martin along with Tony Cox. The duo brought plenty of laughs in the Season 1 episode.

6. Tone Loc

Tone Loc on Martin

Tone Loc had quite the career in the early 90’s following the release of his smash hit song “Funky Cold Medina”. He appeared on many series of the era but his cameo on Martin stands out. He played a former popular student that bullied Martin in their school days. Martin finds him breaking into students’ lockers at their reunion and finally stands up to him.

5. Yo-Yo

Yo-Yo had several cameos on Martin as Sheneneh’s partner in crime Keylolo. She had a hilarious dynamic with Lawrence’s character. The duo portray the roles of 90s hot girls perfectly and created classic scenes with their natural chemistry. Yo-Yo was also the protege’ and frequent collaborator of West Coast rap legend and entrepreneur Ice Cube.

4. Snoop Dogg

Snoop Dogg’s cameo on Martin was featured in an episode where Pam and the crew throw Martin and Gina a surprise engagement party. However, the couple is so busy arguing that they miss the whole thing. Snoop Dogg comes through because he was invited by his Uncle Jerome and takes the party to a whole new level. All the party attendees leave shortly before the couple arrives as they head off to L.A. with Snoop to keep it going.

3. Christopher “Kid” Reid

Christopher “Kid” Reid is one half of the iconic 90s duo Kid ‘n Play. The group is widely known for their films House Party, House Party 2 and Class Act. Reid appeared on Martin as the host of a competition for a fan to win a date with him. Hilariously, Sheneneh ends up being the winner and Kid decides he is unable to go through with it after seeing her in person. This rapper cameo led to one of the funniest moments of the series, Forever Sheneneh.

2. OutKast

outkast on martin

OutKast’s cameo on Martin came at a time when the South was just finding a way into mainstream hip hop success. In the episode All The Players Came, OutKast serves as the musical guest while Martin and the crew rally to save a local theatre. This is a guest-heavy episode that really showed admiration for the Black actors and actresses that paved the way for shows like Martin to exist. It featured appearances from Pam Grier, Antonio Fargas, Rudy Ray Moore, Whitman Mayo and Ja’net Dubois. It is also notable that the show was based in the East Coast and the episode came out in 1995. Later that year, the duo was booed after winning best new artist at The Source Awards.

1. The Notorious B.I.G.

Biggie’s appearance on Martin was one of the biggest cultural moments of the day. One of the most influential rappers of the 90s appeared on a top-rated Black sitcom. The episode focuses on Biggie’s search for background singers to take on tour with him. Martin is an old friend that lets Big stay with him to avoid commotion at a hotel. This allowed people to see the smooth personality that Biggie had in another format. There was no way we could make a list about our favorite rapper cameos on Martin without this taking the top spot.

Martin is a show that has consistently connected with generations of TV watchers for decades and one of the strongest pieces of its legacy is the excellent rapper cameos.

BET+ will begin streaming the Martin: The Reunion on June 16 with comedian Affion Crockett as the host. The first trailer dropped yesterday featuring a tribute to the character Tommy played by the late Thomas Mikal Ford.

Method Man Unpacks Baggage: Apologizes for Past Interaction with Destiny Child

On a recent episode of Math Hoffa’s podcast, Method Man had a woosah moment. He was effectively able to release a pressing burden. In his words,

“To this day, that sh*t hurt my heart.”

The Heart of Method’s Burden

As the OG sat down to rap about his life and experiences, he took a moment to apologize to the members of Destiny Child. According to Meth, he clearly remembers meeting Destiny’s Child when they were still early in their career. According to Meth, they were both in attendance at a celebration for the queen of pop Janet Jackson. And seeing the Divas in the VIP section, he wanted to make an introduction. However, when he went to introduce himself, it appeared the Divas ignored him. According to Method,

“They didn’t even turn around and acknowledge me.”

That stung quite a bit. The reaction pressed Meth and shaped his mood.

The Reason for The Apology

There is a bit more to the story. According to the interview, a bit later in the night, Rockwilder tried to make more proper introductions. However, the girls responded differently this time around. And Method Man was not feeling it. According to Method Man, when the members of Destiny Child reached out to shake his hand, he froze them out. His response,

“‘Go ‘head with that Hollywood s###.

Method’s Current Justification

The artist now contributes his response to low-self esteem. As he conveyed

“I didn’t like myself, so I didn’t like anybody f###### else.”

Being in that frame of mind didn’t permit objectivity in the situation. At the time, Meth was hurt by the perceived rebuff. And as the old adage goes, hurt people hurt others.

Growth

Since that moment, he has had a lot of time to consider things. And he’s realized that his actions at the time were inexcusable. And that has stuck with him for decades, thus the apology.

A Good Day for Method

Today proved therapeutic for Method. He not only displayed a lot of growth but was able to articulate it. Whether Kelly, Beyonce, or Michelle accept his apology is a different story. Nevertheless, what’s done is done. But at least the artist can rest easier knowing he has come to terms with the truth, the source of his action. And he’s made the next logical step to free himself from the sting of regret, an official apology.

Method Man Lands Cover of Essence: Talks Music, Acting and More

Earlier this week, Essence revealed the digital cover and the interview with Method Man. The legendary Wu-Tang member also sat down with the publication to discuss his feelings about being a sex symbol. The artist also spoke on how he transitioned from being one of the leading voices in hip hop to killing it in Hollywood, landing multiple TV and film roles.

Method Man On Being a Sex Symbol: “I don’t understand that shit”

During the interview, Method Man talked about being on the top of every woman’s wish list since the 90s. The artist shared that while his social media posts may serve as thirst traps, that’s not his intention. In the end of the day, he just likes working out.

“I go to the gym for my own peace of mind. I don’t do it to become someone’s sex symbol or a pinup on someone’s wall, I do it for me. People like attention. I’m the same as everybody else. But at the end of the day, take me seriously, not lightly.”

Meth On Acting

Method Man also revealed that while he has always had a passion for acting, the “changing of the guards” in Hip-Hop helped him push harder in the acting lane.

The higher-ups, the so-called gatekeepers, didn’t have much use for a 44-year-old rapper,” Method Man said in the interview. “There was a changing of the guard in hip-hop.

Jumping into the acting world could be a tough transition for some Hip-Hop stars, but the 50-year-old rap icon has made it look effortless. Last month the New York native received an NAACP Image Award nomination for his stellar acting chops. Business is certainly booming for Meth.

However, Method Man explained in the interview that he also wants nothing more than to be taken seriously in his third decade in the entertainment industry. “I was a Black boy living in some of the worst areas of New York. I’ve always felt like I wasn’t enough. I’ve been told that from the gate, “You don’t belong here,” without words sometimes,” Meth says.

Method Man shows no signs of slowing down, at least throughout the interview. He currently graces the small screen as attorney Davis Maclean on the Starz, 50 Cent-produced series Power Book II: Ghost and on The Godfather Of Harlem. The artist brings crime boss Sam Christian to life.

Method Man Looks To Join The MCU

Marvel is no stranger when it comes to having rappers in their casts. They had T.I. in Ant-man, Donald Glover in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Mahershala Ali as the new Blade. They also had Method Man, who wants to join the MCU, in the Luke Cage Netflix series.

Currently, Method plays a defense attorney in 50 Cent’s Power Book II: Ghost, but he wants to do more with his acting career. During an interview with Insider, he spoke about his health and fitness journey and his goal of becoming a superhero.

“Maturity is when you look in the mirror, and you get tired of your BS,” Method said in the interview. “And that was it for me. You know, I was just wanting to change. I wanted to do something for myself instead of for everybody else. I can only be responsible for my actions and hope it inspires the next generation to do the same.”

He also added:

“This whole journey wasn’t necessarily for acting. It was for myself, but I think I’m ready. I got the shirt-off action film thing. I could run, stoic, face straight, running with your shirt off kinda thing. You know, I’m ready, man. Come on, Marvel. Come on, Russo brothers. I’m here.”

The Russo brothers have directed some of Marvel’s biggest movies, such as Captain America: Winter SoldierCaptain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Endgame. Right now, there’s no news on whether Method will join the MCU, but he can score a role.

Method Man In Luke Cage

As stated before, Method made a cameo in Netflix’s 2016 show Luke Cage. Luke Cage saves the rapper and another employee from two burglars robbing their convenience store. The two then give each other respect before they trade jackets.

Since Method has been working on his fitness, he’s ready for more than a cameo. He’s prepared to be a full-on action star. What do you think?
