Rihanna Set To Headline Super Bowl 2023 Halftime Show, “I’m Nervous But I’m Excited”

Although it’s been a while since Rihanna has released any new music, the singer will be hitting the stage in February as she headlines the 2023 Super Bowl Halftime Show. On Sunday, September 25th, an unexpected announcement was made by the NFL on their Twitter account saying “Let’s GO,” tagging Rihanna.

According to Complex, a TMZ reporter spoke with Rihanna outside a grocery store in Los Angeles on Tuesday, October 4th. In a clip that was caught by the paparazzo waiting for the star directly outside of the store, the woman asks, “How do you feel about performing at the..” but before she could finish Riri chimed in to say, “you are too… that was real sneaky girl!”

Rihanna feeling anxious about the Halftime Show!

The reporter continued to say, “I’m sorry, but I have to ask. How do you feel about performing at the Super Bowl Halftime Show?” Rihanna responded with, “I’m nervous, but I’m excited.” The paps continued to question the Fenty Beauty creator as to who she will be bringing out on the stage. As Rihanna walks past, she shrugs her shoulders trying her best to brush off the conversation. The woman behind the camera said, “could it be ASAP?” and told the idol, she’s “gotta know.” As the “Needed Me” singer got into the car, she threw up a peace sign, thanking her.

Rihanna has fans excited for her LVII Super Bowl Halftime Performance!

The NFL, Apple Music, and Roc Nation broke the news of the artist headlining Super Bowl status just last month. A statement shared by Roc Nation founder and frequent collaborator Jay-Z suggested Rihanna acts as a “generational talent” who is “self-made in business and entertainment.”

Past Super Bowl Halftime performances have seen stars such as Dr. Dre, Snoop, Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar in 2022, The Weeknd in 2021, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez in 2020, and the list goes on. Meanwhile, Dr. Dre spoke with Ebro Darden on Apple Music 1 just last month, where he shared some advice for the singer. He says, “Put the right people around you, and have fun! That’s basically what it is, making sure you have the right creative people around you.” Dre then adds, “I’m a super fan of Rihanna. I can’t wait to see what she’s going to do.”

50 Cent Trolls The Game After His Emmy Win

50 Cent is known for trolling others on social media; this time, the “Heat” star went after the former G-Unit artist, The Game.

Last night, Sep 3, 50 Cent took home an Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Special (Live). The outstanding performance in the Superbowl halftime show included himself, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Dr. Dre, and others.

On the same night, 50 threw some shade toward the Compton, Calif rapper via Instagram. In a now-deleted post, 50 Cent posted The Game with the caption “No caption needed” with some laughing emojis. Of course, this did not stop others from screenshotting the post and reposting it online, like the Twitter user below.

The Game caught wind of the small diss on Instagram and responded with a picture and caption of his own. He went to find a photo of 50 in an unbuttoned shirt with a loose tie and used the same caption.

As always, 50 had to have the last laugh, and he did it in a classic-50-Cent fashion. Once again, he went to Instagram to post a popular gif of himself laughing as he drives off in his car.

The caption to the post said, “Oh no [sad face emoji] I’m sorry you don’t get one [trophy emoji]. Then the first week 18k, if you need someone to talk to I’m here for you. LOL.” See the Instagram post below.

The Game’s Feelings Towards The Halftime Show & Its Performers

As some may remember, The Game felt like he should have performed in the halftime show instead of the others. The Game even went as far as to say he felt purposely snubbed from performing. He stated, “The real reason I wasn’t on the Super Bowl [halftime show] is because I am not a safe artist.”

Apparently, he felt hurt because he did not get a call since the entire show was seemingly about Los Angeles.

The Game has also been having some run-ins with Eminem; he released a ten-minute diss track against Em. There has been no official response from Eminem himself about it, though.

‘Still D.R.E’ Gains 1B Views On YouTube

One week after the legendary Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show, Dre’s 2001 single “Still D.R.E” gained over a billion views on YouTube.

Among 84 million people watching the Super Bowl, many enjoyed the halftime performance and sang along, including Jay-Z, spotted in the arena. Come to find out, Jay-Z appeared on Lebron James HBO series The Shop in 2021, sharing how he wrote “Still D.R.E” for both Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg.

“In order for me to really nail the essence of Dre and Snoop had to be like a studied reverence of what they were doing. Even to put myself in their shoes. Cause think about that record. That record comes after Dre leaves Death Row ‘How? My last album was The Chronic.”

Jay-Z has a long history of being a phenomenal songwriter. In addition, he is a featured author on “Pop Style” by Drake, “The Worst” by Jhene Aiko, and many more artists such as his wife Beyonce, Kanye West, and Diddy. The record executive wears many hats, and songwriting is one of his most favorable.

In an interview with The Breakfast Club, Snoop Dogg shares the story of hearing “Still D.R.E” for the first time. He explains Jay-Z’s love and admiration for Dre and how it contributes to creating a masterpiece. Jay-Z constructs the entire song, telling each artist when to punch in and out as well. “It was flawless,” Snoop shares. “Me and d.o.c were like well this [man] out struck us on this one so we gone take the backseat. It was “Still Dre” and it was Jay-Z and he wrote the whole song.”

Jay-Z wrote the song intending to showcase Dr.Dre’s accomplishments and relevance to the music industry since he had just left Death Row Records at the time. Today, his lifetime friend Snoop Dogg is the owner of their former label, Death Row Records. However, despite being estranged from the label for over 20 years, Dre is still on top of his game. When he and Snoop performed the “Still D.R.E” at the 2022 halftime show, Dre reminded the world once again of who he is. One billion views on YouTube equates to an average of $7,560,000. Not to mention the couple of million he generated from his performance.

Dr. Dre is still getting money, producing, and putting on notable artists like Kendrick Lamar and Anderson.Paak. Jay-Z could not have done a better job telling his story in “Still D.R.E”.

“That’s an author,” Snoop states. “That’s a great author to me. Like he wrote a book with that song right there. That’s of Dr. Dre’s best records.”

The Game Kills Rumor “I ain’t had no convo regarding Jay-Z.”

The rumor mill had people itching to see something pop off between The Game and Jay-Z. According to rumors, Game was incensed by not being picked for the lineup of halftime performers for the Super Bowl. Reportedly, the artist was so hot under the collar that he told Jay-Z “to suck his d***!” And, of course, the social media sheep ate up every single word.

The Game Teaches A Lesson

Most know by now what passes for information on social media is like information passed along in a game of telephone. By the time the information comes full circle, the story is completely twisted. In this case, not only is the news twisted but flat-out fabricated. According to The Game, he didn’t say anything remotely close to the trending news. In fact, he hasn’t had anything to say on the matter. In his reaction to hearing what he said was

“Don’t nobody speak for ‘The Game’ except for ‘The Game.’ I ain’t had no conversation with nobody regarding Jay-Z and the Super Bowl [halftime show] he put together.

He couldn’t put it any clearer.

It makes one wonder where the rumor even stems from.

Back to the Clubhouse

This rumor was initially broadcasted into the ether on Clubhouse. A source notes Wack 100, whose clients included Blueface brought up his claim during a chat in a Clubhouse.

Oddly enough, the question remains, what reason would one have for fabricating such a story?

It is not clear if there is a rationale. We know that The Game is adamant about his stance. He knows what he didn’t say, and that’s the end of the story.

So did this rumor come out of thin air? We know that The Game did have something to say about the lineup before the Super Bowl.

The Game hopped on social media, stating.

“FYI: @losangelesconfidential Should’ve been on stage at the Super Bowl I’ll be the first to say it,” along with the caption, “Shit brazy fr.”

Clearly, this statement does not address Jay-Z.

Breaking Down the Rumor

Now there is no record, at least written, of Game saying anything about Hov. However, there is undoubtedly a record of him being icy about the lack of inclusion. So one could assume that this rumor flowed from the artist’s earlier response.

Still, The Game wasn’t feeling all warm and fuzzy. A lack of confirmation beyond that makes all other comments unfounded speculation. One thing is for sure, assumptions can take on a life of their own.

The Game Speaks on It

The Game wasn’t letting anyone get away with anything. He made sure the waiting public got what they were looking for. He provided a statement. In his remark, he gave the organizers of the halftime show several props.

“It was a GREAT SHOW featuring iconic artists. It was a WIN for the culture.”

And that was the end of it.

On Track to Doing Better

Truthfully the Game’s earlier post indicated he felt a certain way about the lineup. However, what can’t be done is attribute a statement to someone without proof. The Game has a point; people can’t believe and run with everything they see on social media. Discernment and impartiality are critical focal points for the hip-hop community in 2022. Don’t’ start nothing want be nothing! So here is to shifting the publics approach to narratives.

2022 Half-Time Show’s Highlights And Controversies

While the 2022 Super Bowl Half-Time show was incredibly successful, that does not mean that there were no controversies surrounding it. Eminem took a knee during his segment as a homage to Colin Kaepernick. Kendrick Lamar had to censor his song, but it was not for the expected line.

Colin Kaepernick used to be a football player that sat during the national anthem in 2016. He did so to protest against racial injustice, police brutality, and systematic oppression in the United States. After speaking with Nate Boyer, he took a knee instead of sitting. Kaepernick did so to not be disrespectful to the military.

Since then, the NFL has banned players from not standing for the “Star-Spangled Banner.” The NFL also knew about Eminem’s plan. He would kneel during the rehearsals, according to the TMZ podcast. As far as we currently know, no issues have risen out of the homage.

The NFL Removed Lines from Lamar’s Song

TMZ did an interview with Dr. Dre. In it, they ask about Lamar’s line about the po-po seems cut out from the TV broadcast. They also asked if anything else had to remain from the show.

“There were a few things we had to change, but it was like, really minor things,” Dr. Dre told the outlet. “Em taking a knee, that was Em doing that on his own, and there was no problem with that. I think the beginning of Kendrick’s set, he says, ‘If Pirus and Crips all got along,’ they had a problem with that, so we had to take that out.

“No big deal, we did it, but all in all, everybody came in, we were professional, everybody was on time, and everybody really felt the magnitude of what this thing was and what we were gonna be able to accomplish.”

Apparently, it was just bad timing on the TV’s part. They did not cut away when the police were talked about in “Still D.R.E” afterward.

Overall, the 2022 Super Bowl Half-Time show went well, though certain misunderstandings took place.

Eminem Kneels at Superbowl LVI

Eminem kneels on stage at the 2022 Super Bowl Halftime Show, following his performance of “Lose Yourself.” He left the audience at L.A.’s SoFi Stadium in an uproar where the Los Angeles Rams took on the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday (Feb. 13th).

NFL Reports Conflict On Eminem Kneeling

The gesture caused an uproar amongst commentators. Eriq Gardner of Puck News led the charge. According to Gardner, Eminem planned to kneel in support of Colin Kaepernick. Supposedly, the league told him no because they wanted to avoid a “divisive culture war moment.”

Gardner added the NFL went back and forth with Dr. Dre and his camp concerning Dr. Dre and Kendrick’s anti-police lyrics. Snoop’s signature left pocket bandana apparently also raised some eyebrows. While the league denied any grievance with Eminem, fans lauded the act as one of many ways the performing rappers snubbed the NFL’s imposed censorship.

“We watched all elements of the show during multiple performances this week,” Brian McCarthy, an NFL spokesperson, explained. “[We] were aware that Eminem was going to do that.”

Em Remained Silent

Eminem has not yet made a public statement about why he knelt. However, kneeling first began making a political statement when Kaepernick took the knee during the national anthem in 2016. Kaepernick aimed to raise awareness and support for the #BlackLivesMatter movement, police brutality, and racial injustice. Ultimately, the peaceful protest led the NFL to terminate Kaepernick’s contract. But the bold stance became a trend. Activists adapted the pose in solidarity with victims and survivors of racial violence.

Slim’s Shade History

Kneeling isn’t the first time Eminem has been publicly politically polarizing. Remember when the real Slim Shady’s sly remarks on Sway in the Morning seemed to shade Hilary Clinton’s alleged email hack? He also praised Obama in 2012. But, he expressed open disdain for Donald Trump on BET Freestyle in 2017. Then, the 8-Mile rapper pulled a career-first when he licensed Lose Yourself to the Biden/Harris 2020 Campaign.

The real Slim Shady is not shy about letting his views be known. FMHipHop will look for Eminem’s official response via social media or an interview.

Jay-Z Sings Along To Dr. Dre’s Song That He Wrote At The 2022 Super Bowl

For the Super Bowl halftime show, several hip-hop artists came together to perform, including  Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 50 Cent, Kendrick Lamar, and Mary J. Blige. They each performed some of their biggest hits. Dre and Dogg played their 2001 classic “Still D.R.E.” A song that Jay-Z actually wrote. He and Beyonce were caught singing along to the song at the show.

How Still D.R.E. Was Made

In May of 2021, Jay-Z explained the process of writing the song on  HBO’s The Shop: Uninterrupted.

“On that reference track, I’m doing Dre and Snoop’s vocals. The reference track, it sounds like them. The Foxy [Brown] reference – I’m glad nobody can find that one. But you gotta have somewhat a reverence for them. Obviously, the music they were making with The Chronic and all that… in order for me to really nail the essence of Dre and Snoop had to be like a studied reverence of what they were doing. Even to put myself in their shoes. ‘Cause think about that record. That record comes after Dre leaves Death Row: ‘How? My last album was The Chronic.’”

The song’s co-producer, Scott Storch, has previously talked to Hip Hop DX about Dre’s initial reaction to the song.

“He was on the other side of the door. And the way the studio was set up, there was a control room, and then it was like a kitchen right outside of it. He was in there, making a sandwich or something. And he had the drum pattern that he programmed which is left on play on the MPC. He just let it loop and he would let us all jam out and see if anything comes from it. And he opened the door, he’s like, ‘That’s it right there. That’s it.’ His ears are so dope. Dre was like, ‘This is it. This is a single.’ And he was so excited that he ran back in and we fucking recorded it, and we started layering it together, and just boom.”

Dre Impresses with Massive Half Time Show

Since its first announcement, Hip-Hop fans have been anxiously looking forward to Dre’s Superbowl Half-time show. What fans got was an absolute treat. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, and Fifty took us back. The vibe was hard.

Dre & Snoop Make A Masterful Half-Time Show Entrance

The energy was electric once Dre and Snoop strolled onto the Half-Time show stage. The smooth rolled off the two. Dre took his seat at the helm of soundboard lacquered in white and dropped the beat. The energy rose times ten as Snoop and Dre performed Snoop’s anthem “The Next Episode.” Snoop D.O.G.G. didn’t stop there. Snoop descended into a Jam session and segued into California, famous by late colleague Tupac.

Dre’s Production Skills Shine

During the Half-Time show, the transitions were as smooth as butter. Snoops set segued to Fifty, mic in hand, surrounded by a crew of female dancers as he performed “In Da Club.”

Next was the Queen Mary J. Blige sparkling in white and silver belting out “Dance for Me.” Before the set ended, she ascended like a queen ascending to her throne. She rocked the stage, giving us classic Blige. The queen took us straight down memory lane. “No more Drama,” and no more pain. She poured every bit of herself into her Half-Time show performance before relenting in a full-on collapse.

Dre’s Protégé’s On Deck

Kendrick took center of the Half-Time show stage with his posse in black. Then his entire crew stepped out of the box to perform, “Alright.” We bobbed our heads not only to the fly lyricism but to the message. Master lyricist Eminem followed with “Lose Yourself.” His flow was still immaculate—no need for shiny apparel when your talent is truly brilliant.

Closing The Half-Time Show

Dre upped the bar one final time. He strode onto the Half-Time show set and sat down to tickle the ivory’s, demonstrating he is not only a rapper and producer extraordinaire. He is a musician. His rendition of Pac’s “I Ain’t Mad at You” on the keys reminded the spectators won’t forget about Dre. He didn’t stay long at the keys before the beat dropped. Once more. He and Snoop dropped another classic, “Still Dre.”

Hip Hop halftime was the highlight of Superbowl 56. Not only did it raise the energy, but it kept us right in the pocket. Jay-Z was spot on when he said, “This is history in the making.” Congratulations to Dre for producing a stellar show.

COVID-19 Threatens Dr. Dre’s Investment in Super Bowl Halftime Show

Dr. Dre has got a lot to worry about. Quite a few media outlets are reporting the rumored cancellation of Dre’s Super Bowl Half-Time Show because of COVID-19. Unsurprisingly, cancellation isn’t great for Dre. He reportedly invested millions into the show. So, if Half-time is cut, then he loses his investment.

Does Dre Have Insurance From Super Bowl?

Well, a cancellation insurance policy is certainly a thing. Yes, Dr. Dre has coverage. So, one would think Dre wouldn’t have anything to worry about in this Super Bowl situation. Not in this case. Unfortunately, there always seems to be some catch. Cancellation insurance is null when it comes to COVID-19. As noted,

The nullification of coverage happened because COVID-19 is on the Communicable Disease exemption provisions list.

So, because of Omicron and the resurgence in cases, it’s looking more and more likely that the producer extraordinaire might lose his investment.

Super Bowl Hype

The Super Bowl is one of the most-watched programs annually. Many artists consider performing on stage, for one of the biggest audiences in the world, a true privilege. This year’s Dr. Dre performance at Super Bowl promised to be a significant event for Hip-Hop fans.

The lineup of performers included Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dog, and Eminem, top-tier talent. And without a doubt, the artists were excited about giving the masses something to remember. The legendary Snoop Dogg was quoted as saying,

“We plan on putting together a great show to give the people something that they been waiting on.”

So How Are Things Looking For Dre?

The Dre’s Super Bowl halftime show is done for if COVID cases continue to surge especially given the rise of Omicron. Cancellation is terrible news. He fronted a great deal of the money to bring the Hip-Hop legends to the bowl stage. Cancellation equals a few million dollars.

What About The Super Bowl?

Despite the possibility of canceling the halftime show, the bowl will go on.

“The NFL made it clear it wants fans in the stands, and if that can’t happen at L.A.’s SoFi Stadium, the game could be moved to say, Dallas.”

With hopes, things change: Dre gets his investment’s worth, and we get the entertainment part. So, we are keeping our fingers crossed.
