Why The Verzuz Preshow Battle Featured These R&B Gems

The Verzuz battle between Omarion and Mario went down last night; it is one for the books. It was also hilariously the most prolonged and unexpected addition to the show’s catalog. While the Verzuz attendants were amped up for this prolific night in R&B, they had no idea what they were in for. The night began with some highly notable R&B talents: Sammie, Pleasure P, Bobby Valentino, and Ray J.

With acclaimed comedian DeRay Davis hosting and the DJ of the night serenading the crowd with top slow jams of the 1990s and 2000s, the night was off to a nostalgic start. However, as the pre-show stars began to throw playful banter around, fans had to ask: is this the battle?

The vocals were all over the place; maybe we can blame the alcohol. One thing stands, these R&B thugs from Verzuz were once heartthrobs when they took over the charts throughout their musical careers. Stay with us as we run down some of our famous jams from the “drunk Uncles: we know and love.

Sammie’s Long R&B History

Sammie opened the show with the hit “Kiss Me Through The Phone,” featuring Soulja Boy. The 2008 track was monumental in young love and technology progression. This song alone pushed the puppy lovers into a frenzy and popularized the need for a video phone.

However, Sammie was on the scene long before video phones appeared. In 1999, a pint-sized 12-year-old Sammie danced and sang his way into pre-teens. Child stars are rare, and with his pipes and smooth moves, Sammie easily is an excellent addition to R&B history.

Bobby Valentino

Bobby Valentino caught R&B enthusiasts by surprise with his distinct and captivating voice. Let’s face it, he’s easy on the eyes too. His debut single, “Slow Down,” hit the spring of 2005 like golden honey and was indeed for the honeys. Valentino’s assessment of the love interest having a “butterfly tattoo” made it a trend to have that fly art.

Bobby V has many bangers under his belt, but who can deny the dynamic of the Ludacris and Valentino duo on “Pimpin All Over The World.”

Pleasure P’s Vocals On Verzuz

Pleasure P came as 1 part of the quad group Pretty Ricky. If you wanted sexy, steamy lyrics and visuals to match, this was the group for you. Splashing on the scene with their raunchy single, “Grind On Me,” the Bluestars set summer 2005 ablaze. Pleasure P’s silky voice lathered the slow beats and surrounded the raps of his bandmates. It was evident Pleasure’s mastered vocals would then outrun the group.

Indeed it did when he released his solo debut, “Did You Wrong,” under Atlantic Records in Jul 2008. Nothing would if this song didn’t win a man his lady back.

Ray J… Brandy’s little brother!

Although often referred to as Brandy’s little brother, Ray J’s business moves and light-hearted approach to trying situations make him a self-owned person. Undoubtedly, his openness to dating and “hitting” socialite Kim Kardashian first left a stamp in the world of celebrity entertainment.

But, it was his single, “One Wish,” that would solidify his ties to music and quickly go down as one of the greatest R&B songs of all time. Adding to the odes to young lovers, “One Wish” then made you want to love someone as hard as Ray J sang the lyrics.

Still, the R&B Verzuz night was a beautiful disaster. Procedurally, the show must go on. One thing is also for sure, we can’t wait to see who is up next for a Verzuz battle.

TDE’s Reason Says Fabulous Can Beat Andre 3000 In a ‘Verzuz’ Battle

The Verzuz battles have become a staple in the hip-hop genre since the beginning of the pandemic. In a recent interview with Van Lathan and Rachel Lindsay, TDE’s rapper Reason expressed that iconic New York rapper Fabulous can beat the legendary Atlanta star Andre 3000 in a Verzuz battle. While the West Coast artist was simply giving his opinion, it sparked controversy & debate online following his initial comment. Some even accused Reason of clout chasing by making such an unpopular opinion public.

What Was Said In The Interview

“In my opinion, yes, Fabolous is a better rapper. I would love something like that [Verzuz]. But I feel like if you lined up Fabolous and André 3000, I got my money on Fab. That’s how I feel,” is the direct quote from Reason himself that sparked the online debate. Shortly after, he explained that Fabulous has out-rapped Lil Wayne which automatically means he can out-rap Andre. In his own words, “That’s the thing. I don’t know. [Fab] out raps Wayne. If you can out rap Wayne, you can out rap André 3000. He’s out rapped Wayne on records. … I’m not saying it’s easy for Fab, but I think if Fab came in with the mindset of ‘I want the best verse,’ I think Fab can out rap André 3000.”

After TDE’s rapper Reason expressed that New York rapper Fabulous can beat the Atlanta star Andre 3000 in a Versuz battle, he doubled down in a tweet saying that we need the battle to happen:

Who do you think would win in this hypothetical Verzuz battle? Is TDE’s artist Reason onto something or is he delusional? It’s his opinion at the end of the day. Read more of FM Hip-Hop’s featured articles today.

Questlove Teases Upcoming Roots Verzuz Matchup, New Album

Last month, someone constructed a bogus flyer boasting a Verzuz matchup between The Fugees and The Roots and posted it online, forcing rapper Black Thought to twitter to put the rumors to bed. While that matchup seems unlikely to happen, The Roots’ drummer Questlove teased on Twitter that the legendary Philadelphia hip-hop group has found a good opponent….but he won’t tell who just yet. Questlove’s response follows a tweet from a user on September 20 that said, “There really isn’t a single suitable matchup for The Roots in a #Verzuz. They stand alone. And no don’t suggest The Fugees.”

Naturally, Questlove’s post sparked fans’ interest, and people began to make predictions. Questlove responded, “That’s Capn Obvious,” when one individual said, “Something like Black Thought against Mos Def or Common makes more sense.”  A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Parliament-Funkadelic, Freestyle Fellowship, Brand New Heavies, Pharcyde, Public Enemy, and even the Red Hot Chili Peppers were among the other artists suggested.

Questlove teases new The Roots album in the works

Ashanti vs. Keyshia Cole, Raekwon vs. Ghostface, Redman vs. Method Man, Eve vs. Trina, Bow Wow vs. Soulja Boy, The Lox vs. Dipset, and Fat Joe vs. Ja Rule are just a few of the 2021 clashes planned by Verzuz organizers. Along with a possible Verzuz appearance, Questlove also teased that The Roots are now working on a new album. It has been seven years since The Roots dropped their  …And Then You Shoot Your Cousin studio LP. The Roots classic second album, Do You Want More?!!!??!, was re-released in a deluxe edition earlier this year.

Who do you think would be a good opponent for The Roots? Let us know what you think by interacting with us on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook @FMHipHop.

Lil Mo Claimed Fat Joe’s Verzuz Battle Comments “Vile”

The Verzuz between Fat Joe and Ja Rule on Tuesday, Sept. 14 hit the fan. The newfound conflict between 50 Cent and Irv Gotti had followed up with Lil Mo and Vita responding to Fat Joe’s comments on social media. Further on, Lil Mo also went to talk with TMZ.

The context was a skirmish between Fat Joe and Ja Rule. During the Verzuz, Ja Rule suggested Fat Joe had to “bring Remy to save you” and claimed it “fucking pathetic.” In response, Fat Joe called Ja Rule’s special guests “dusty bitches” and assumed Ja Rule “had to go to the crack house to find them bitches (Lil Mo and Vita).”

The Social Media Response(s)

On Wednesday, both Vita and Lil Mo posted on social media responding to Fat Joe’s comments. Vita tagged Fat Joe’s profile and wrote that she “was wondering why U was apologizing to me last night N (Ja Rule).” She then asked in the text, “what you think Mo (Lil Mo) (Fat Joe) vs Rule or was it (Fat Joe) vs The Ladies.” Meanwhile, Lil Mo reminded Fat Joe that she’s “Not A #Bxtch nor am I Dusty!!! #StreetCODE Women and Children is off limits.”

Fat Joe eventually responded to both artists with Tweet comments on Instagram. Those comments included, “I’m super sorry I love you and vida I said sorry to your face before I left the building and to Vida I was caught in the moment and I’m super sorry God bless.” Lil Mo and Fat Joe also shared love, while Lil Mo even supposedly rewrote the initial confronting comment at her post to “What a beautiful night at the GARDEN everyone gave me my FLOWERS. NO MORE NEGATIVITY. It’s ONLY UP from here.”

However, on Thursday, Sept. 16, TMZ posted an article with Lil Mo’s interview. She called Fat Joe’s comments “vile” and “disrespectful.” At the end of the video, Lil Mo concluded that ‘”I never got a formal apology. You can’t tell me how I’m supposed to feel. I’m not looking for no Birkin bag but I know how the streets work. I don’t want it to go that way.”

Usher Weighs In on Potential Diddy and Jermaine Dupri Versus Battle

Usher had a few things to say about Diddy snubbing Jermaine Dupri’s Verzuz challenge. Dupri invited the Bad Boy Records founder to a Verzuz battle early this week, but Diddy quickly fired back.

Dupri tweeted the challenge on Tuesday, after Fat Joe and Ja Rule went head-to-head in their own Verzuz battle, writing:

“Somebody let @Diddy know I’m @thegarden right now! And he gon need some training for me,”

Diddy responded to the challenge, stating on Twitter:

“Beloved you my nigga but your arms too short to box with God!!! You aiint got enough hits. I’ll smash you with just biggie n Mary. But I do have the upmost respect on you as a musical legend – Dre the only one can get in the ring w me . – LOVE 🖤”

Some fans didn’t take Diddy’s comments too kindly. They pointed out that Jermaine Dupri has an impressive track record and could easily take the 51-year-old rapper in a Verzuz battle. Dupri has produced for well-known musicians such as Mariah Carey, Usher, and Tamar Braxton.

Usher’s Comments

The “No Limit” singer spoke with the paparazzi earlier today, sharing his views on the contentious issue. Usher stated that it would be hard for him to pick a side since he’s worked with both producers in the past.

“Being a part of the hits that he has, I can’t say that. He has plenty of hits and I think that Diddy does, too. It’s hard for me, ‘cause they both my brothers,” the Grammy award-winning singer reported.

Usher and Jermaine Dupri

When asked whether he thought Diddy and Jermaine Dupri would put on the greatest Verzuz battle of all time, Usher stated, “It could definitely be a great one.” He also added that the point of the music battles was to celebrate music and not to pit artists against one another.

“Having Verzuz is to celebrate music. East coast, West coast, South coast, everybody great at this, and Verzuz has obviously made it great for our culture, but I don’t think that one is greater than the other. I think that if it was JD and Puff or Dre and Puff…or Tip and 50 —that’s the one I really want to see!”

Swizz Beatz Sends Shots at SNL, Claims ‘Verzuz’ Is Bigger Than ‘SNL’

Fresh off the beloved Isley Brothers vs. Earth, Wind & Fire entry of Verzuz, co-creators Swizz Beatz and Timbaland were giving themselves their flowers as they reflected on how far their creative venture has gone in such a short time.

The two were on Instagram Live discussing the most recent match-up when Timbaland said Verzuz was “the new SNL.” The comment prompted Swizz to correct him, stating Verzuz is bigger than SNL.

“We bigger than that,” he said. “Our numbers beat SNL already. Our numbers is bigger than SNL. That’s not even, like, cap. That’s real talk. It’s already happening.”

It was a bold claim from the prolific producer. And he wasn’t wrong necessarily. While Verzuz isn’t in the variety show/sketch comedy category, the organic music competition show has produced significant ratings. Back in November, Swizz revealed the record-breaking stats for the Gucci Mane and Jeezy battle, stating that “on a minimum level” 9.1 million people watched the showdown.

Ultimately Swizz and Timbo always go back to Verzuz being a celebration of artistry.

“It’s not about, like, the best Verzuz,” Swiss said. “It’s about celebrating the creative. So some nights we gon’ have the Super Bowl, some nights we gon’ have the Pro Bowl, some nights we gon’ have the Rose Bowl. But we’re gon’ have a good time.”

‘Versuz’ Announces Exciting New Battles & Teases A Rematch

While the world was in quarantine, many trends and social media apps increased in popularity. I mean, what is there to use when you must avoid the outside world in 2020? The internet. The internet was the only tool that kept many people connected to others around them. Even if it was virtually, the internet was pretty much a haven. Not only did it provide information regarding covid but also comedic and entertainment purposes. Tik-Tok and Verzuz had a massive impact on social media.

Many people thought Verzuz started last year. But in actuality, Verzuz was created in 2017, which led to a producer battle during Hot 97 Summer Jam in 2018. Over time Swizz Beatz and Timbaland would battle each other and other producers until Verzuz picked up its popularity in 2020. Verzuz became a televised event, although it was on social media. Every week people look forward to these matches. Teddy Riley versus Baby Face, Keyshia Cole versus Ashanti, Patti Labelle versus Glady’s night, Monica versus Brandy, and let’s not forget to mention the awkward but impressive Gucci Mane versus Jeezy. I thought that Verzuz was going to end up at a funeral. Whew, Thank God it didn’t.

The inventors also planned a plethora of exciting events to come.
Since the legendary Raekwon versus Ghostface Killah, Swizz and Timberland have announced two events and a blurred rematch that has everyone excited. One battle is Earth, Wind, and Fire versus the Isley Brothers and 420: Method Man versus Redman. Honestly, I was shocked hearing that announcement, and I bet you are too.

In addition to sponsorships, including Ciroc, Doritos, and Apple Music, Verzuz receives alit support. Since the Raekwon versus Ghostface Killah battle, Verzuz partneres with Thriller. Verzuz is here for the long run.

5 Verzuz Battles We Need To See

Prez Tells Us The 5 Verzuz Battles We Need ASAP!

We absolutely love the Verzuz battles. Swizz Beatz and Timbaland started something majestic.  Everyone seems to be throwing out names to see who should battle who. So we came out with 5 battles that would be amazing. We had to reach deep into the playlist catalogs for this one.

1. French Montana VS. Wiz Khalifa

Photo via Instagram: @wizkhalifa

Lets start with 2 guys who always have a record in circulation. Wiz gave us the Pittsburgh anthem, Black and Yellow, made us all cry with Charlie Puth on See You Again, and got us buying edibles and vapes with Travis Scott on Bake Sale. French had us riding on East Tremont on  Ain’t Worried Bout Nothin, has a strip club posse cut with Pop That, songs with Drake such as No Stylist and hit with Swae Lee on Unforgettable. Neither one is known for the classic album, but got records to make for an entertaining battle.

2. Asap Ferg VS. Big Sean

Photo via Instagram: @AsapFerg

Two of the most underrated rappers today would make a Verzuz battle. Asap Ferg is one of the most energetic artists of his generation and Big Sean never gets the credit he deserves for how dope he is. They worked with each other on Ferg’s  World is Mine. I would be interested to see what the song placement would be in this battle. That would be the key to victory. Ferg got heavy hitters such as New Level and Work Remix, but Big Sean could counter with Blessings and Marvin & Chardonnay. Swizz and Timbo got to set this one up.

3. T.I. VS. Rick Ross

Photo via Instagram: @richforever

T.I. vs. 50 Cent is cool, but putting him against Rick Ross is better. This is for the true crown as King of The South. T.I. gave us countless hits and amazing albums such as King, Urban Legend, and Trap Muzik in the 2000s. As T.I. started to get into other ventures, Rick Ross ascended. His first 3 albums are good but 2010’s Teflon Don is where he took off and gave us iconic verses and one of the deepest rap catalogs ever. This battle might need 35 songs instead of 20.

4. Wale VS. J.Cole

Photo via Instagram: @realcoleworld

This one pits one of the most misunderstood artists ever(Wale) against one of the most toxic fan bases ever( J. Cole). The two artists are “friends”, this battle could ease the tensions social media believe they have. Plus this battle is closer than what people think. J Cole might have classics such as Friday Night Lights and 2014 Forest Hills Drive, but Wale can counter with The Album About Nothing, Summer on Sunset, and Ambition. Depending on the song placement, Wale could pull out the “upset”.

5. Missy Elliot VS. Busta Rhymes

Photo via Instagram: @missymisdemeanorelliott

We ending with 2 legends. The battle of the multi-million dollar video budgets. We need to get Missy vs Busta asap. This not for the kids, this is a nostalgic trip for those who miss the 90s. Busta’s 20 is going to be tough to beat with songs such as Dangerous, Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See, Break Ya Neck and features such as Scenario, Ante Up (Remix) and Flava in Your Ear(Remix). Missy’s catalog stacks up well too. She has songs with Aaliyah, hits such as Get Ur Freak On, One Minute Man, and Work ItThis Verzuz Battle would be more of a celebration of icons. Everyone loves Missy Elliot and Busta Rhymes, so them giving us 2 hours of hits and history would be beautiful.
