Lisa Leone: Creative Giant Who Captured the Golden Age of Hip Hop Via Photography

They say a picture is worth a thousand words and thus invaluable is the eye of the artist who captures it. One such artist is Lisa Leone, whose talent for recognizing moments of historical significance caught the golden age of hip-hop through her lens.

Leone’s work has provided us with an imprint, a time capsule of culture in the throes of birth, which is phenomenal.

Who Is Lisa Leone?

Lisa Leone is a Bronx native who spent her time taking in hip-hop as it crawled from its infancy. While others were scrambling to be a part of the narrative through lyrical expression, she took her lens and documented it all.

This was not unorthodox for Leone. Photography was a passion and an early pursuit that stemmed from her observatory skills. As Euronews Culture notes,

“Leone was a self-proclaimed “b-girl” who developed a passion for photography at an early age.”

And that passion put her in the right places at the right time. Lisa Leone didn’t miss an opportunity. Her insight and eye for dopeness led Leone to catch on camera such icons as Lauryn Hill, Snoop Dogg, and Biggie in the artists’ early years when they were grinding, trying to make their mark.

Dopeness Overload

Like most creatives, Leone’s talent extended well beyond holding the camera. Leone also delved into writing, producing, and directing.

Leone’s mind was a creative birthing room directed towards telling stories with significant impacts through various visual mediums. As Euronews further notes, It was her gift that led to a collaborative partnership with the likes of Spike Lee and Stanley Kubrick.

Leone: Uniqueness Personified

Lisa Leone Photography

Passion always extends from authenticity. Leone had an authentic purpose.  She readily admits luck was on her side in affording her opportunities, few others would have.

As most know, luck is only part of the measure that makes one great. True luck is when preparedness meets opportunity. Lisa Leone was ready. When asked about her most memorable moments, she recalls witnessing Nas as he lay down “Illimatic.” And she was moved. She notes,

“Being in the session with Nas was like watching history being made.”

Of course, being the astute and talented observer, Leone caught the moment. But that was only one of such. Her experiences are vast, and there were many more memorable moments.

In Lisa’s interview, she cites working with other greats, such as Big Daddy Kane. And because of her, those moments will never be erased.

Behind The Artistry

Like all photographers, Lisa Leone has a process, and she refined it. But processes are extensions of time spent perfecting a gift, which comes from loving what you do.

Although Leone admits her temperament to be one of shyness, Snoop Dogg recognized her greatness almost immediately. He saw that not only did Leone have talent, but some had something leading her to push beyond her temperament.

According to Leone, upon showing the Dogg Father stills she captured, he was blown away. And this is what he said to the budding young talent

“I don’t know how you captured these images; you must have hip-hop in your veins or something.”

Of that, it is clear.

Flowers Where Flowers Are Due

History occurs moment by moment. Words or pictures are the only things we have of substance to remember those moments. Thus, we owe much gratitude to talents such as Leone, who were born to see the world in a certain way and use that gift to record that.

Because of Lisa Leone, there is no denying from which we came, and no one can put a price tag on that. So, our hats go off to Leone for her invaluable contribution to hip-hop.

Empowering Women, Embracing Identity: An Interview with Yvonne Guidry, Founder of SpoiledLatina

In the world of entrepreneurship, there are a number of success stories that stem from overcoming adversity. As well as turning negativity into an opportunity for growth. Yvonne Guidry, the visionary behind SpoiledLatina, is one such entrepreneur, empowering women. Her inspiring journey has touched the lives of countless women, particularly women of color. In this exclusive interview, Yvonne shares her mission of  promoting self-love, and understanding one’s worth. Which led her to create a platform that celebrates diversity and advocates for women entrepreneurship.

How Yvonne Guidry is Empowering Women

Yvonne’s motivation to create SpoiledLatina can be traced back to 2008 when she found herself restricted to the label of being “the wife of” someone. Rather than being seen as her own individual. The feeling of always being the “last one to eat” and wearing so many different hats fueled her desire for change. However, it was an incident on a video shoot that set her motivation on fire. Someone referred to her as a “spoiled Latina,” which sparked a realization within her. Rather than letting the negative meaning of the term upset her. Yvonne saw the potential to turn it into a powerful force for good.

Carving Out Her Own Path

During her time at the SwishaHouse record label, Yvonne Guidry played a pivotal role. For her, being at SwishaHouse presented an opportunity to challenge and reshape her mindset. Instead of simply being defined as her husband’s wife, she approached her role with a different perspective. Determined to carve out her own identity. Yvonne wanted to make a name for herself independently. Despite her husband’s ownership of the label. She was driven to be known as “Yvonne,” choosing the path less traveled. Yvonne decided to pave her way. Taking the “hard way” to create her own distinct path in the industry. Her tenacity represents her commitment to personal growth and empowerment as a woman in the business world.

In 2015, she took the brave step of creating her blog, SpoiledLatina. With the mission to support and empower all women, particularly women of color. What started as a personal journey quickly evolved into something much greater. As her blog gained attention, Yvonne began attending conferences across the country. Building relationships and partnerships, as well as embracing her motto: “hustle, motivate, and collaborate.” Through these efforts, she not only advocated for women entrepreneurship, but also became a beacon of awareness. In particularly, for the challenges women face in their pursuit of success.

For Yvonne, finding a balance between work and life is essential to leading a fulfilling, well-rounded existence. SpoiledLatina has become a valuable resource for women seeking to enhance their lifestyles. Providing them with the tools and knowledge to create the best versions of themselves.

Notably, Yvonne’s journey isn’t just about personal growth. She is keen on promoting diversity and representation within her company and events. By featuring panels made up of women from various backgrounds and cultures, she ensures that SpoiledLatina fosters an inclusive environment.

One of the pivotal moments in Yvonne’s journey was her partnership with Diageo. As part of their 200%er initiative with Buchanan’s Whiskey. The program’s goal is to empower hustlers to keep pushing forward and never giving up. Through this collaboration, Yvonne’s second annual SpoiledLatina Summit attracted over 500 women. Making a significant impact on Hispanic culture.

Reflecting on the partnership, Yvonne shared, “We have always consumed their products, but now, seeing ourselves represented by it, everything feels different. It’s empowering, especially when we look back on how far we’ve come.”

Be sure to try Yvonne’s infamous Buchanan’s cocktail, the Buchanita!

Ingredients:

· 1.5 oz Buchanan’s 12-Year-Old DeLuxe Blended Scotch Whisky

· 5 oz Fresh Pineapple Juice

Garnish: Fresh Pineapple Slice for Garnish

Glassware: Highball Glass

Facing Obstacles & Overcoming Them

Despite the progress made, Yvonne realizes the barriers that women, especially women of color, face. Particularly in forming brand partnerships. However, she remains optimistic about the future and encourages aspiring business owners to follow their hearts and pursue their passions. Her advice is simple yet profound: “Go for it, whatever it is in your heart. It’s okay if it’s not altogether, life is short!”

Yvonne Guidry’s journey from being known as “the wife of” to becoming a trailblazing entrepreneur and advocating for women’s empowerment displays the power of resilience and self-belief. SpoiledLatina continues to be a force of positive change, lifting up women and encouraging them to embrace who they are, love themselves, and understand their true worth. As Yvonne continues to lead by example, her impact on women, communities, and the world at large is nothing short of remarkable.

Dina Marto

Marto is an exemplary individual with over two decades as a music executive under her belt, which is impressive. However, such is not uncommon for an entrepreneurial powerhouse with unparalleled business acumen. One of her notable undertakings was that of Twelve Music & Studios, founded in 2012, a standout offering. Twelve Music & Studios has been touted as,

“The South’s most sought-after creative environments to develop talent and produce Billboard-shattering hits,” and rightly so.

Marto’s experience in the music industry runs deep. Marto is noted to have contributed her talents in A&R at Island Def Jam, offering her expertise as coordinator for albums with artists such as Nas, Janet Jackson, LL Cool J, and Rick Ross. And she currently serves on TI’s management team. However, this is a small measure of Marto’s contributions. Marto has also taken an active role in spreading the Women in Music vision. In fact, they credit her with helping to launch the Women in Music Chapter in Atlanta, Georgia.

Ambassador #5: Adriana Arce

Adriana Arce

Arce is another amazing woman with an entrepreneurial spirit. Currently, Arce is the Vice President at REBEL. However, Arce has performed in a leadership capacity for over a decade. According to WIM, she is noted to have managed talent artists Miley Cyrus and Lil Nas X. Such aligns with Arce’s passions. As an artist first, music has always been a driving force for Arce. Before stepping into an executive role, she was a musician, full-time artist, and performer.

But beyond her talent, her ambition and desire to be an agent of change is awe-inspiring. Her tenacious spirit and efforts in the industry earned her a spot on Forbes Magazine’s 30 Under 30. But what is truly amazing is even with such a luminary track record, Arce continues to push for the progress of others. As WIM notes, In Arce’s words,

“We still have so much further to go in providing more opportunities for women and minority people across entertainment. It’s not enough to hire.”

Women In Music: An Organization Worthy Of Highlight

Although established 38 years ago, Women In Music is an organization that continues to be a massive force of change, striving to service women across the globe from” Los Angeles to Japan.” In a world where many struggle to be heard or rise from obscurity, Women in Music puts action behind the belief “That the conversation around equality is an inclusive one, where all voices are welcome.” That is something everyone can get behind.

Where there are agents of change, there is always something to celebrate. And the Women of Music organization is one such force. So a big hip-hop salute to Women in Music.

Breaking Barriers In Women’s And Children’s Health And Wellness: 28 App And Healthy Hip-Hop

Nowadays, many women are bidding farewell to hormonal birth control, discovering their cycles and bodies like never before. As a result, for the first time, millions of women know how their hormones affect everything from mental health to weight, skin, and menstruation. Yet, for many years, women were left in the dark, and healthcare professionals dismissed their concerns, claiming it was all “in their head.” Fortunately, the 28 app and FemTech companies are changing the narrative and prioritizing women’s health. By educating women on how to optimize their physical and mental wellness, they’re opening up new avenues for a healthier lifestyle.

28 app is changing women’s healthcare by providing a tech-driven and customer-focused platform focusing on cycle tracking, fertility benefits, and personalized hormone health education. Through this app, women can unlock new opportunities to enhance their health and wellness, which have been limited until now.

By scientifically curating fitness routines and nutrition profiles based on each user’s natural cycle, 28 empowers women to heal and strengthen their minds, body, and spirit. Moreover, these health suggestions correspond to the user’s current emotional state, lifestyle, and relationships, ensuring a holistic approach to wellness.

Embracing Women’s Bodies With Love And Courage.

But 28’s story stretches beyond personalized health solutions.

It is a story of love, courage, and perseverance. The company’s team embraced women’s natural cycles and bodies and cared for them with the love and respect they deserved. In addition, they had the courage to ask unpopular questions, challenge the status quo, and create a solution that didn’t wait for society’s permission.

And their journey didn’t stop there.

Empowering Women’s Hormonal Health: The Journey Of 28’s Innovative Movement

With perseverance, the company’s team created a platform that empowers women (and men) worldwide to experience healing, harmony, beauty, and strength. This path is inside us all, and our cycles hold the key. A few years ago, they set out on this journey, and now, they continue to inspire women to lead a healthy and balanced lifestyle with their innovative approach.

You may think that 28 is just an app, but it isn’t. It represents a powerful movement empowering women to take control of their hormonal health and well-being. The company’s mission is to provide women with accurate information and eliminate the stigma surrounding menstruation. The idea for the platform emerged as a response to the fitness industry’s male-centric approach that fails to consider the menstrual cycle.

Unleash Your Child’s Potential with Healthy Hip Hop – The Revolutionary App Promoting Well-being!

After realizing the amazing advantages of the 28 app from FemTech, let’s shift our focus to an application that emphasizes empowering children. Healthy Hip Hop is specifically designed to promote the well-being of kids.

The CEO and founder of this amazing app, Roy Scott, has always been heavily influenced by hip-hop culture. He even chose to become a rapper instead of pursuing a promising basketball career after high school. It wasn’t until one day, he picked up his four-year-old son, Justus, from school and heard him singing along to explicit lyrics from his music that Roy realized the negative impact his music could have on children.

That’s when Roy knew that he needed to make a drastic change. And thus, Healthy Hip Hop was born! With this app, Roy is on a mission to inspire children to lead a healthy and active lifestyle through the power of hip-hop. So why not join the movement and give your children the gift of health and wellness?

“Everything changed for me when I pick up my son from school, when I see him repeat my music, as we know, music promoter, drugs, violence, etc. I just knew at that point of my light bulb moment, I reflected on how impactful music, specifically hip hop music and culture, was on me. I knew I couldn’t be this influence on anybody else,” he explained.

The Positive Alternative For Children’s Mental And Physical Health And Empowerment

Healthy Hip Hop is more than just an app; it’s a positive alternative that uplifts young people by promoting their mental and physical health, academic achievement, and personal empowerment. Using hip-hop music’s power, this platform offers a kid-friendly approach that’s both educational and entertaining.

Initially started as a website, Healthy Hip Hop blends hip-hop music production and songwriting with concepts that inspire and teach children healthy habits.

The app features animated characters, like Smith’s PJ Panda, that rap and sings about important topics like using the potty, sticking to a healthy diet, and practicing positive thoughts. And the best part? The music is excellent for both kids and parents alike!

With music created by Wes Smith, Roy’s partner, Healthy Hip Hop is an innovative and fun way for children to learn about health and wellness.

The Transformation From Rap To Tech, Gaining Support From Google And Techstars

Scott teamed up with Smith and turned Healthy Hip Hop into a tech company. As a result, the venture has gained significant support from Google for Startups & Techstars. In addition, they raised funds using Republic, an equity-based platform that separates itself from other fundraising sites like Kickstarter and GoFundMe.com.

As Healthy Hip Hop continues to evolve, Scott is set on bringing the app into classrooms. “We first started testing the tech in the early phases,” Scott explains. “Primarily, the biggest use case for Healthy Hip Hop is to get kids up and active kind of, to start their day or morning energizer, and also throughout the day for brain boosters.”

Megan (Pete) Thee Stallion Talks Standing Firm in One’s Power

Recently Meagan Pete, also known as Megan Thee Stallion, sat down with Elle magazine. The artist tipped her cup, pouring out her soul in this intimate session. Meg was fully transparent in her rationale for the interview at this place and time. She did it to heal, put some things in perspective, and finally put it behind her.

As Meg pointedly notes, she is not her trauma. “For the sake of her mental health, she has no plans to keep reliving the most traumatic experience of her life. She’s choosing to change the narrative.”

Megan Thee Stallion Talks Lessons From Childhood

Megan began the conversation by recalling her childhood. She spoke of growing up believing others’ intentions were pure. While that seems like something one is taught, it’s not. Having too big of a heart is a byproduct of character. Wanting to seek out the best in others was innate to Meg’s character.

But Megan’s parents made attempts to stand as a buffer, trying to instill in her the necessity for discernment and protecting her heart. But as with most empathic souls, her nature overrode her senses and any lessons others attempted to impart.

As Meg’s life progressed, as with many others, she struggled to understand the gap between her pure heart and others’ intentions. But life can cement lessons we don’t quite grasp. As she aptly relayed,

“Over the years, she realized certain people didn’t need a logical reason to be hateful or mean, but because of her sympathetic side, still she wanted to give others the benefit of the doubt.”

Fundamentally this would equate to perpetual hurt.

Chickens Come Home To Roost

According to Megan Thee Stallion, her altercation with Tory Lanez and the experiences that followed finally drove home the lessons. “Unfortunately, it took until this devastating experience to fully grasp the magnitude of my parents’ message back then,” Megan said.

Like many, Meg’s trajectory culminated in suffering the disgrace of public opinion and scrutiny. Unfortunately, the artist was also under undue pressure from unexpected sources. Sadly, her victimization did not end with the wound she sustained. That was only the beginning.

Megan Talks Spiraling Down

According to the artist, during the time when she was down was when most unbelievably, many began to turn on her. It’s a narrative that is all too common.

Meg went on to say, “Even some of her peers in the music industry piled on with memes, jokes, and sneak disses. They were completely ignoring that she could have lost her life. Rather than condemning any form of violence against a woman, these individuals attempted to justify her attacker’s actions.” That depth of pain is often challenging to bounce back from.

Tracks Of Her Tears

Megan admits that many were unaware of the depth of her pain. Simply because she wore a smile and continued to pour herself into her work, somehow, that was synonymous with healing. As many are intimately familiar, that is hardly ever the case.

Megan Thee Stallion Stands in Her Power
Megan Thee Stallion. Image source: Kevin Winter, Getty Images.

Smokey Robinson summed this beautifully in his masterwork “Tracks of My Tears.” If people would take the time to look a little bit closer, they could see the tracks left by the hurt and pain. Not even the brightest smile can hide such.

Megan Talks Getting Back Up

But through all the pain and depths of depression, Megan held it together as best she could. The artist stood firm in her truth despite many turning a deaf ear and forcing their eyes shut. Meg even spoke about the feeling when hearing the verdict passed down against Lanez.

“It was a victory for every woman who been shamed, dismissed, and blamed for a violent crime committed against them.”

Recovery Is A Beast

Megan admits that she has been in a recovery stage. She’s been putting in the work to heal. And healing is a process. But now that she is taking her journey to self-healing, she is in a better place. However, better doesn’t mean that the pain doesn’t linger. It means it hurts a lot less.

“But that’s the process of healing,” Megan notes. “It’s an ongoing process with moments of fear and uncertainty mixed in with blissful realization.” It’s what one must go through on the road to becoming. It makes you stronger and more resilient.

Always A Light

Megan Thee Stallion’s interview was a moving piece. Each word was like a fragment of her soul. Although some shards were sharp, they cut in the right places. They cut in the areas that let the light in so that many others who read her narrative can also begin to heal.

And It is with hope Meg can get the peace she deserves with this cleansing, and finally, this will be laid to rest. Above all, she deserves the space to heal. But we honor her for carving out a little time to uplift others in her healing process.

African Queens Ground-Breaking Netflix Series Narrated By Jada Pinkett Smith

Netflix began streaming a powerful and spell-binding series narrated by Jada Pinkett Smith, African Queens on February 15, and it is a jewel.

What is African Queens?

African Queens is a rare and in-depth look at Africa’s often overlooked royals. It is a recreation of a retelling of the narrative of the most powerful, bold, fearless, and beautiful women who ruled in the great continent of Africa. It is told through the voices of scholars and historians, and its dramatized for greater effectiveness. While the lens is trained on the narrative of the queen, it examines the whole of her surroundings. African Queens examines the culture, political structure, customs, and practices of those who are her people. It is a selection that exquisitely showcases so much of Africa, the regality of the leaders, the innovativeness, societal structure, and the raw and natural gloriousness of the land they inhabit. However, it does so without sacrificing some of the uglier truths. Instead, it gives a robust perspective offering context while educating its viewers.

The Project

Jada Pinkett Smith not only narrates the moving docu-series, but she also serves as Executive Producer. However, it is told from an African perspective. According to iAfrica, African Queens is written by Kenyan-born storyteller Peres Owino and British diplomat NneNne Iwuji. This project comes via Smith’s Westbrook Studios and independent film studio Nutopia. However, for Smith, this series is a passion project, a means to educate and empower. According to iAfrica, “Pinkett, who was a key force behind the project, has cited the imperative nature of reviving these stories of African female leadership to empower today’s young, black women.” While it does much to empower female viewership, it is an offering that inspires the whole community.

Queen Njinga (Nzinga)

The segment now streaming focuses on Queen Njinga of Ndongo. And it retells her story so that the world will not only know her name but remember her legacy and impact. As iAfrica cites, “Queen Nzinga of Ndongo and Matamba came to a position of power during the 17th century, when she ruled over Angola and fought off Portuguese settlers., a feat worthy of the annals of history.

Hip-Hop and the Promotion

Hip-hop is a culture, a movement, a complex structure held up by multiple pillars. There are four basic tenants or pillars, or in some circles, classed as elements that some hip-hop scholars define as language. And those languages are breakdance, rap, deejaying, and graffiti. While these are the primary pillars, they are not the only pillars. According to an article by Midnation, there are rather nine pillars. One of those remaining five pillars includes knowledge. Midnation notes, “In the book The Fifth Element of Hip Hop Knowledge, Travis L. Gosa affirms that knowledge is the fifth fundamental pillar of this culture. Without it, the other elements would not be cohesive.”

So as a celebration of hip-hop and black history, FM Hip Hop aims to uphold the pillars of spreading and sharing a wealth of information that informs the populace and promotes, uplifts, and advances the culture.

In Conclusion

For those interested in a cultural exploration of kingdoms and rulers of the great African continent and the empires that stretched across that land, tune in to African Queens.

Climb The Mountain To Entrepreneurship: Taylor Ping Aims To Help Others Reach It

Most people dream of becoming an entrepreneur. Creating a successful business requires dedication, hard work, and a combination of knowledge and skill. However, the rewards make it worth it.

Dr. Dre is a prime example of an entrepreneur who saw a gap in the market and took the opportunity. In 2014, he used his influence, reputation, and resources to acquire Beats Music and Beats Electronics and turn them into one of the world’s most successful music streaming services and headphone companies.

Similarly, Vanilla Ice became an accidental real estate mogul, flipping houses and making a profit at a time when the market was booming. He quickly developed a knack for renovating and reselling homes, eventually launching his television show, The Vanilla Ice Project.

As the CEO and founder of Hierarchy Media, Taylor Ping has established a reputation for her work as an entrepreneur, advocate for women’s entrepreneurship, educator, and public relations professional. As a business expert, she provides advice on public relations strategy, business structure, venture capital investing, venture capital funding, and venture capital structure, among other things.

Throughout her career, Taylor has worked with and mentored young entrepreneurs looking for strategies to start their businesses, how to begin with no capital effectively, and providing advice to companies seeking capital partners, funding, global brand expansion, etc.

There Is A Passion Behind Every Entrepreneur

“It is my passion and mission to speak to and reach more young women and men who are looking for real advice on how to expand their business into a realistic, impactful and unique experience to the consumer,” Ping said. “Everything I do is to empower others.”

entrepreneur
Credit: Taylor Ping, Founder of Hierarchy Media and The Risen Group, with permission

With a global business group called The Risen Group, the 26-year-old entrepreneur offers a wide range of business and investment opportunities. As part of its mission, the group brings together a private network of people who want to improve this world.

Rather than focusing on money, Taylor is passionate about helping more people learn the ins and outs of business and marketing. As a rule, she only takes on clients offering impactful products or services with inspirational stories. “My passion for what I do is what helped me not stop what I was doing and persevere when challenges came up that made me feel like I wouldn’t be able to overcome them… passion is what will ensure you don’t give up,” Ping said.

Adversity Shaped Taylor Ping’s Character

During the 2007 market crash, the self-made woman entrepreneur’s parents divorced when she was very young. As a result of her parent’s divorce and the tumultuous market, Ping learned invaluable lessons about resilience and the power of hard work. Furthermore, Taylor Ping witnessed her father build his own business at an early age. She has also seen firsthand how things beyond their control can negatively impact their lives. With this in mind, she worked hard and built her own businesses to set her family financially free.

Many women in business face everyday struggles such as being underestimated, not being taken seriously, and facing gender bias. For Taylor, this battle was the key to her success. Without it, she would not be in the position she is in today.

After receiving multiple large clients for her media company several years ago, Ping put an end to taking small risks and talking down to herself. It became apparent to her that the knowledge she had to share could generate a 10x increase in their income and help the companies become notable, impactful brands in their industry.

Taylor had also been featured in Forbes magazine as one of the top 10 entrepreneurs who had chosen a business mission that inspired others.

Providing Men and Women With Advice

Ping offers valuable advice to women and men who want to build successful businesses. “I especially speak to other women who have not had a mentor give knowledge to the extent I do,” she said. She states that young women have difficulty finding mentors in business because they are vastly underrepresented. Nevertheless, Taylor believes more women will be able to start their own businesses and make more impact in all industries with dedication and guidance.

“An entrepreneur without passion is not an entrepreneur. He is a slave to society, putting out services or products that the world does not need or does not connect with because he himself does not believe in it,” the woman entrepreneur said.

Black culture is rich in talent, which reaches back through generations. We have lived and continue to live amongst giants, some with fabulous mention and others whose contributions have garnered barely a whisper. However, it becomes a service and a duty to lift the accomplishments of those who have blazed trails, kicked down doors, and continue to carve out spaces for others.

Who Is Quinta Brunson?

Many are just beginning to recognize her work in the industry. Many need to be made aware of how much the writer, comedian, and creator has put in to reach her current pinnacle of success. According to Afrotech, Brunson was the creative force behind some of the most viral social media memes long before penning “Abbot Elementary.” According to Afrotech,

“The start of Brunson’s viral streak was her Instagram video series, “The Girl Who’s Never Been on a Nice Date.”

This was the spark, the catalyst leading her to follow her heart and leave Apple to chase her dream. However, that was merely the starting point of her success journey. Some time would pass before she would gain national recognition for her talents.

Brunson’s Path

Langston Hughes once penned these words in the famous poem Mother to Son “life has been no crystal stair. Its had tacks in it, splinters, and boards torn up.” Indeed, life is complex, and pursuing dreams can be challenging. It takes work and dedication. Even after endless hours of work, success is often delayed. And at times, it comes only after a period of intense struggle that would shake the faint at heart. But not Brunson.

According to Afrotech, the virality she experienced did not catapult her to immediate success. Even after going viral, “She became broke.” However, thanks to a friend, she took an opportunity that would push her to the next level. As Afrotech notes,

“From 2014 to 2018, Brunson wrote, produced, and starred in sketches with Buzzfeed. And she helped bring fellow Black creators on board.”

Pouring Into Her Craft

Despite her work with BuzzFeed, Brunson continued to pour into her projects. And in 2021, ABC acquired the rights to “Abbot Elementary,” a dream come true. Although ABC picked up Brunson’s project, she has remained transparent about the process. According to Brunson, not everyone saw the value in what she had to bring to the table. In her words,

“There was one other network that will remain nameless that didn’t understand the value of (“Abbot Elementary”), but that’s how it goes.”

Yet she pushed forward with the support of those who got it.

Reward Follows The Work

Today, the world sees Brunson’s light because of her follow-through. Not only did “Abbot Elementary” win seven nominations, but three wins. According to People, her successes have made her the second Black woman to take the honor she has.

So, in honor of Black excellence and the month set aside in recognition, FM Hip Hop celebrates Quinton Brunson’s light, perseverance, and contributions to the culture.

Member of Till Family Calls Out “Till” Oscar Snub

A member of Emmett Till’s family has come forward to express the sentiments of the family after the Academy’s Snub of the feature film “’Till.” And the sentiments can be summed up in one word, “disappointed”.

“’Till” is a 2022 biographical Drama directed by Chinonye Chukwu. It is a hard-hitting but moving re-dramatization of the tragic story of Emmett Till. However, when award season came, it was overlooked by the Academy. Deborah Watts, a cousin of Emmett Till, who is also the co-founder of the Emmett Till Legacy Foundation, had something to say.

Emmett Till: Historical Tragedy

Emmett Till’s story is one of the most egregious historical accounts of boiled-over racism. While accounts of racism and the atrocities it wrought were not uncommon for the time, his story struck a nerve. According to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, his death catalyzed a movement.

The Details of Till’s Death

Till became the victim of a senselessly brutal attack that ended his life. The National Museum of African American History and Culture notes, “According to court documents, Till was visiting family for the summer in Money, Mississippi. He purchased two cents worth of bubble gum from the Bryant Grocery store saying, “Bye, baby” over his shoulder to Carolyn Bryant as he exited.”

And for that, his life was taken.

 Fires Stoked

It may be hard to understand in the present the propensity of what the incident meant. But in specific terms, it was monumental. It was like striking a match in a forest long parched by drought. The insensitive reaction amounted to gross negligence and set off a raging fire. As noted, 100 days after the death of Till, Rosa Parks refused to move to the back of the bus. And Till’s death was instrumental in Park’s decision. Rosa Parks is quoted as saying,

“she thought about going to the back of the bus. But she thought about Emmett Till and she couldn’t do it.”

Bright Points in Film

Years later, we continue to tell the story. “Till” was the latest project put forth. Danielle Deadwyler, Jalyn Hall, Frankie Faison, and Whoopi Goldberg poured their heart and souls into honoring the legacy of Emmett Till through film. Danielle Deadwyler mesmerized audiences with her portrayal of Mammie Till-Mobly. She was able to convey a raw emotionalism that was impressive. It was as if she tapped into Mammie’s soul to convey her excruciating pain, consuming grief, and unparalleled strength. Deadwyler embodied the complete essence of Mammie. But unfortunately, none of it moved the Academy.

Watt Speaks on Behalf of the Till Family

In a January 25 interview with TMZ, Deborah Watts could not contain her disappointment. She expressed how upset she and the rest of the family were very disappointed. Yet, despite her dismay, she eventually turned the conversation toward an outstanding cast member. She spoke highly of Deadwyler’s performance, citing why it deserved at least a nomination. But TMZ wasn’t the only one Watt’s shared her sentiments with. She shared her explicit feelings with the world two days ago via social media.

Rehashed Argument

Watts’ argument is a familiar one. In fact, others have also called out Viola Davis’ lack of nomination for her role in “The Woman King.” Nevertheless, one must realize that the Academy is an old organization with less than a stellar history of equity. It may change, or it may not. So while recognition is undoubtedly deserved, that is of little significance at this point. Most important are those who recognize the value in what was put forth because awards don’t necessarily equate to the cumulative merit of a film. “Till” was an undeniably phenomenal picture and a much-needed reminder of where we’ve been juxtaposed to where we are.

Watts Looks Toward the Future

Watts contends that it will not stop them from sharing the story despite the snub. Instead, they will press on whether they are rewarded or not. And that is what is most important.

Michelle Obama And The Light She Carries

January 17th marked the birthday of the former first lady Michelle Obama. Despite no longer leading from The White House, she continues to inspire and lead.

Who is Michelle Obama?

Michelle Obama is the daughter of Fraser and Marian Robinson and the sister of Craig Robinson. She is a Chicagoan, born and bred in the Windy City. But her gifts were meant for a much larger world.

First Lady Obama has planted seeds in the fields of social justice and law. In 1988 she earned her Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School. But her natural intellect and drive defined her as the scholar she was. Educational pursuits have only been a slice of her life. She has also put her heart into public service. According to Look to The Stars, Mrs. Obama has worked with eight charities and supported 18 causes. More recently, she has shared her world through works of literature via the penning of two bestselling books, “Becoming” and “The Light We Carry.” Furthermore, Obama is a passionate mother and devoted wife. But, most of all, she is an honest, dedicated, persistent, hard-working, classy, and all-around good human being.

Why the Spotlight?

Service is about giving back, contributing, and paying it forward. When the efforts of great people are highlighted, it provides a blueprint for excellence. It demonstrates what is possible and the heights that can be reached if one aspires to do so.

Michelle Obama is a force of nature. And her accomplishments speak for themselves. However, when she took on the mantle of first lady, she became a model for all little girls, especially Brown and Black Girls. Highlighting the attributes, efforts, and contributions which shaped her as an icon is a reasonable service.

Michelle Obama: Shining Her Light

Lady Obama continues to live by example. She has spent the last few months granting interviews and opening herself to the world. And in those interviews, Michelle Obama comes entirely as herself. She keeps it candid, refusing to hold back whether she shares her experiences, vulnerabilities, strengths, lessons, or successes.

The critical distinction which separates her from so many others is she is living out what she writes about. And that’s in integrity.

Set-Apart

There is no doubt that Michelle Obama will continue to inspire. Inarguably, it’s beautiful to see someone who has ascertained such status be so authentic. It sends the message that it’s okay to fully embrace ourselves and be who we are. But at the end of the day, what sets apart the difference-makers in this world is the light they carry on the inside.

In Conclusion

So today, we celebrate all Michelle Obama is and the example she sets forth. And we wish her a happy belated birthday and a year of light and love.

With Black History month approaching and Woman’s History Month to follow, FM Hip Hop will continue to highlight the icons, leaders, changemakers, and trailblazers who are shining the brightest in the community.
