Mayor of Uvalde Upset at State Agency

Don McLaughlin, the Mayor of Uvalde, Texas, attended a city council meeting on Tuesday and expressed his frustrations with the lack of transparency from Texas officials. Specifically the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), for constantly changing information about the school shooting that took the lives of 19 children and two teachers.

The mayor heavily criticized Texas Rangers, a DPS agency, and its leader, Col. Steven McCraw. Additionally, McLaughlin states how pieces of information given at press conferences from DPS were either false or constantly changing. The mayor accused McCraw of intentionally minimizing his agency’s mistakes in the weeks following the massacre at Robb Elementary.

Quotes obtained by CNN from McLaughlin stated “Col. McCraw has continued to, whether you want to call it lie, leak, mislead or misstate, information in order to distance his own troopers and Rangers from the response. Every briefing he leaves out the number of his own officers and Ragers that were on-scene that day.”

“Col. McCraw has an agenda and it is not to present a full report on what happened and give factual answers on what happened to this community,” said the mayor.

The Mayor on the Community

McLaughlin states that the constant misstatements and blame-shifting from Texas authorities were dividing the community and understandably frustrating grieving families.

“What matters to Uvalde is that these brokenhearted families and this grieving community get a full investigation and an accurate report of what happened that day,” he said.

There have been many people, including families of the tragedy, who want to know where it all went wrong. McLaughlin also stated that Robb Elementary would be demolished. This comes to little surprise after the events that took place close to a month ago.

“You could never ask a child to go back or teacher to go back to that school. Ever,” said the mayor.

Irv Gotti Speaks On Drake’s ‘Honestly Nevermind’

Irv Gotti joined the chorus of voices critiquing Drake’s new album Honestly, Nevermind. The Murder, Inc. co-founder spoke to TMZ on Tuesday, expressing concern for the state of hip-hop after the album’s release.

While Gotti expressed his admiration for Drizzy, he also discussed what the 6 God’s shift means for rap.

“Drake’s new album is not hip-hop,” Gotti said. “[And] he can do what he wants. Let me stress that: Drake can do whatever he wants.”

Irv Gotti also responded to the question of if Honestly, Nevermind signifies the end of rap and Drake’s status as an icon.

“I hope not,” he said. “As long as I’m alive it could never be the demise of hip-hop, I gotta get back in the game and find me a n***a then. That’s what the album made me feel like, it made me feel like going to find me a raw new DMX, new Ja, new Jay and serving ni***s and f***in’ bringing back great hip-hop.”

The Debate Over Honestly, Nevermind

The release of Honestly, Nevermind has certainly divided fans. Many were expecting a rap project, but Drake offered an array of dance music with a focus on house beats. The shift in music has started a debate on where rap culture is heading.

In a recent call-in appearance on The Joe Budden Podcast, Vince Staples offered his opinion on the issue. The Big Fish artist said genres should be phased out because current rap culture is defined by social media.

“When you think about where music is heading, everything is Instagram,” Staples said. “Everything looks the same, everything moves the same, everyone dresses the same, everyone talks the same. So the genre sh*t is gonna have to go out the window eventually. It’s too hard to separate culture because the internet is kinda pushing everything in the same little bubble.”

Vince Staples & Joe Budden Discuss Drake’s Album Eliminating Rap Music

Drake recently surprised fans with his latest album Honestly, Nevermind and has both fans and rappers talking good and bad. Vince Staples sat down with Joe Budden on The Joe Budden Podcast to discuss the new album. The conversation started with Budden asking if Drake’s latest LP is a sign of rap music heading in a different direction. Staples then commented saying he got similar backlash for his 2017 experimental album Big Fish Theory. “Music has always been very visual,” Staples said. “When I think about artists, visual things pop up… Michael Jackson it’s the moonwalk and 2Pac it’s a lot of aesthetic things. Of course, it’s the music, but the thing is we’re visual people.” He continued to say “…everything is Instagram, everything looks the same, moves the same, dresses the same and talks the same. The genre shit is going to have to go out the window eventually.”

Musicians Not Sticking To One Genre

Like Drizzy and Vince, many rappers and musicians have had their fair share of experimental songs and albums. Juice WRLD blends both rock and rap within his music and has been received well. In the late 2000s, rap group Shop Boyz also blends the rock sound within their music including the head-banging “Party Like A Rockstar” in 2007. More recently, Beyonce released “Break My Soul,” a dance-heavy track that samples Robin S’  “Show Me Love” from the 90s.

While Drake’s new album has a dance/electronic sound to it, he is familiar with the genre in his previous work. With songs like “Get It Together” from More Life, the record-breaking hit “One Dance” from Views and “Too Good” with Rihanna, rappers and musicians are always wanting to bend the rules to see what fits and what they are inspired by at the time. Both should not be put into a certain box or genre.

Fat Joe Speaks On Preserving Hip Hop Culture and What That Means

Fat Joe recently sat down to discuss an issue very dear to his heart, Hip-hop culture and its preservation. One thing was sure his endearing passion was evident.

Fat Joe’s Humble Beginnings

Fat Joe grew up in the Bronx, the birthplace of hip hop. Only during that time “Fat Joe da Gangsta” answered to his birth name, Joseph Antonio Cartagena. He was a little boy of Cuban and Puerto Rican lineage growing up in public housing in the ’70s. But he also grew up during one of the most electrifying periods in music history. Hip hop was in its infancy around the time the artist was in his adolescence. As recorded,

“Hip-hop originated in the predominantly African American economically depressed South Bronx section of New York City in the late 1970s.”

Fat Joe Breaks Down His Recollection

In the interview, Joe recalled how it felt growing up during that era. In his fondest recollections, he reflects on the diversity the inclusivity of hip hop. From what he could remember, Hip hop welcomed everyone with open arms. In his words,

“It was always diverse. It was always Latino, Black, White, Asian, whatever.”

And that unity is what made him fall in love with hip hop.

A Shift

Joe doesn’t neglect to mention the change he’s felt. He notes things took a turn at some point. Unlike the conversations he remembered, conversations surrounding hip hop have shifted. Over time the center of talks has gravitated away from unity to ownership. As much as Joe could remember, it was never about who owned Hip hop. Hip-hop was communal; it belonged to everyone. Joe was clear on that in his interview,

“When I signed in growing up in the Bronx where Hip Hop was created, I was taught to love everybody that Hip Hop is almost a religion.”

Preservation Of Hip Hop His Driving Force

The artist firmly believes that where hip hop has veered is not the hip hop he knows or loves. And he aims to preserve the culture he knew growing up. In a heartfelt statement, he confers,

“We were always taught to embrace everybody who loves Hip Hop music. And so, I have an obligation to that.”

What Drives The Preservation of Hip Hop

For Joe preserving hip hop is about more than him. It’s more than the accumulation of money. Instead, his focus is on passing on his wealth of knowledge.

“I tell ’em, ‘Yo, move like this. Watch yourself, too.’ And that’s what it’s all about”

Summarily, he believes that perpetuating knowledge through generations is the key to cultural preservation. And it is hard-pressed to disagree with him there.

Fat Joe Scratches The Record

A few weeks ago, Soulja Boy hopped on social media with a rant. The topic of his tirade was the lack of mentorship from the OGs in the industry. He had loads to say. The centerpiece of his message the responsibilities of the old heads. Soulja placed many of the current generation’s woes on the backs of the previous artists calling them out for willful neglect. However, as proof and point, Joe proves some are doing something. For sure he is doing his part to ensure hip hop as he knows it lives on.

Bobby Shmurda Drops Rant On Producers Overcharging Him

Bobby Shmurda announced a new EP was on the way this summer, but it seems that plans for new Shmurda music are once again derailed.

Shmurda dropped a minute-long clip on Instagram on his side of the rapper vs. producer relationship. The Brooklyn rapper trashes producers for their greed and up charging him for beats. He once again states that he is trying to release new music, but producers are overcharging him. Shmurda explains that producers are sending beats that already feature multiple voices over it. While he can certainly afford it, Bobby expresses that he isn’t paying for production already used by other artists.

He commented, “I’m trying to drop my project but these n***** is asking me clearances, and these f*cking producers is asking for some crazy sh*t. I don’t know what rumors is going around they think that Bobby is just dropping bags this that whatever.”

A quick watch of the video shows just how livid Shmurda is.

Bobby Shmurda vs. Epic Records

After Bobby Shmurda went viral with the single Hot N****, Epic Records quickly signed the Brooklyn drill artist. He reached No. 6 on the top charts with the single, along with successful remixes. From there, his debut studio album was scheduled for a 2016 release.

However, Shmurda received a six-year prison sentence and the album was postponed. His prison release came in February 2021, with fans desperate for new Shmurda tracks.

A year later in February 2022, Shmurda took to Instagram, voicing his displeasure with Epic Records. He commented on how the album was ready to drop and that the company was purposefully prolonging his career. In the post, he called for his release from the company. Epic Records granted his request, with fans now anticipating his independent album release.

Bobby has teased a new EP dropping soon, along with a studio album rumored to feature the likes of Quavo and Rowdy Rebel.
