Lil Wayne  (Dwayne Michael Carter Jr.) is clarifying that some things are not up for discussion. The seasoned hip-hop artist from New Orleans has openly declared that he is not interested in performing at the Super Bowl in the future.

The 2025 Super Bowl will be remembered for the football game alone. It will also be remembered for the extraordinary performance by renowned hip-hop artist Kendrick Lamar. His show quickly went viral and captured the attention of audiences worldwide. Despite the widespread acclaim, not all reactions were favorable. Rapper Lil Wayne expressed dissatisfaction, not with Lamar’s performance, but with the Super Bowl officials’ decision to invite Lamar in his place.

Dream Big or Go Home

Performing at the Super Bowl has long been a dream of the “Sucker for Pain” artist, a goal he has openly shared. In a 2023 interview, Yahoo reported that Wayne revealed his desire to perform on one of the world’s biggest stages. He expressed a firm willingness to seize the opportunity if the event took place in New Orleans, his hometown. With the announcement that the Super Bowl would indeed be held in New Orleans, Wayne was filled with hope and anticipation for his chance to shine and fulfill his dream. However, as events unfolded, his aspirations were not realized, leaving him to grapple with the disappointment that accompanies an unfulfilled ambition.

Lil Wayne Breaks it Down

In a recent revelation, the hip-hop artist disclosed that he had been diligently preparing for his performance, guided by advice on how to secure his dream gig. Carter revealed that an NFL representative advised him to adopt a more public presence in anticipation of the show. He said, “To perform, you must follow many instructions about who to please and who to avoid.” He further noted his participation in events he typically wouldn’t attend, such as Michael Rubin’s exclusive all-white parties. Carter realized his preparations were in vain when the announcement of Lamar’s performance came.

Hope Deferred

It was undoubtedly in poor taste for his hopes to be raised so high, only to be dashed.  Respectively, he’s not the only one who has had to feel the sting of being overlooked. There are no words that can adequately sum up how Wayne, in particular, dealt. During an earlier interview, the artist revealed the depth of his hurt. In a vulnerable moment that could easily invite judgment, he let the world in. It was a moment of vulnerability, offering a valuable lesson.  The real lesson lies not in the event but in the response. Admittedly, Wayne took the high road. Like a good sportsman, he wished Lamar well with his performance; he had no interest in tuning in.

The Aftermath of A Snub

According to sources, he is no longer interested in the NFL’s biggest show. Some might label his comments as petty.  But when you consider that he was operating under the impression that he had secured the gig, it’s easy to understand the frustration behind it all. As Yahoo recounts Wayne’s statements on the matter, an insider led him to believe he was a sure thing to perform. However, when Lamar was announced instead, someone from the NFL apologized to Wayne and admitted, “We ain’t in charge” of the halftime show. Wayne reportedly went on to say,

“All of a sudden, according to them, they got curved. So, I’m just going to have to accept whatever they say.”

Lil’ Wayne’s Experience: The Lesson in it All

Wayne’s disappointment is justified. No one can blame him for not wanting to work with the organization again. Despite the perspective-altering lesson the artist learned, there is an even bigger one for those now beneficiaries of this larger revelation. The overarching moral lesson is to never attempt to be someone you’re not. Do not do things that don’t align with your true self for a fleeting opportunity. In the end, is it worth it?

Perhaps what stings the artist most is not just the perceived snub. An even greater hurt is the lengths he went to. How much he had to step outside of himself to chase a dream. It’s difficult to come to terms with, especially when it doesn’t yield the desired outcome

Kendrick Lamar is causing a stir yet again, dominating headlines with his latest project and addressing controversial topics that have people talking

On September 8th, the news broke that Kendrick Lamar would headline the biggest show of the year—Super Bowl 2024. While many were ecstatic at the thought of hearing Lamar perform his hit tracks for the world’s largest audience, not everyone was pleased. Among those mentioned in related discussions was Lil Wayne, whose fan base expressed disappointment over his exclusion.

Kendrick Lamar’s 2024: A Year of Controversy and Viral Hits

2024 has been a monumental year for Lamar, especially with the release of his explosive diss track against Drake, titled “They Not Like Us.”While not quite expected, this track spread like wildfire and became a viral sensation.

Drake Vs Kendrick Lamar: The Lyrical Battle

There are rap battles and warfare, and Kendrick Lamar and Drake demonstrated the latter. Lyrically, they were locked and loaded on the battlefield, and neither took prisoners.

A few weeks ago, the world witnessed the start of the next era of rap battles. Older hip-hop fans recall the early ’90s rap battles between legendary artist Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. Since then, there has been little dust-up in battle rap. However, J. Cole and Drake laid the groundwork a little more than a month ago. Like the first match in a title fight, it was only a preview of what was to come when Drake and Kendrick would take their positions in the center of the ring. And as the Ringer points out, it was worth paying attention to. Why? Well as noted

“Hip-hop has become more diffuse and hyper-regional; Drake and Kendrick represent the last artists popular enough to suck up this much oxygen.”

A Journey Through Creative Conflict: Who’s Winning?

Everyone has their own perspective.  However, in terms of balance, Hip-hop reigns supreme. Fans are witnessing lyricists at work, each elevating the other as they reach down into that creative space to find that fire to demolish the competition. This time around, the conflict has been ongoing. So, where did this all start?

“First Person Shooter” and the Rise of an Epic Rap Battle

It all started with the “First Person Shooter” project, which featured Drake and J. Cole.

Cole’s verse was an ominous predictor of what was to come. As Cole flows, “N****s so thirsty to put me in beef, dissectin’my words and start lookin’ too deep.”

And Kendrick Lamar was one who didn’t take too kindly to the mention of his name in the pair’s collaboration. In response, Lamar used his feature on “Like That” to scorch his lyrical nemesis.

Cole responded with a “7-minute drill,” which some interpreted as a few mediocre jabs.

 

Despite public sentiments, Cole decided to step down gracefully after some thought. Nevertheless, that did not derail the express train to one of the most intense rap battles of all time.

Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar

Drake took offense to Lamar’s verse and responded with a rumored leaked diss track, “Push Ups.” Before Kendrick could respond, Drake aimed and fired again in “Taylor Made Freestyle.”

The heavyweight that Lamar is, he was not taking it on the chin, and he came back stronger with “Euphoria,” which ABC27 describes as a six-and-a-half minute track that “hits like an opus.”

He unleashed a full-fledged lyrical assault that many believed was a TKO that Drake would not recover from

Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar: Go Hard or Go Home

The artist responded with “Family Matters.”

That was nowhere near the end. It became apparent that these two were likely to go for ten rounds. And Lamar didn’t disappoint, coming back with “Meet the Grahams.”

 

 

To add insult to injury, in the style of “Mortal Kombat,” Lamar did not just try to “Humble” Drake but “finish him” with “Not Like Us.”

All Eyes on Drake

At this point, Drake had everyone’s attention. Many wondered if Drake’s response was worth it after Lamar’s rapid-fire responses. But when you are in the ring, and your reputation is on the line, you fight until the end. In his track “The Heart Part 6,” the “Certified Lover Boy” stood up for one more pushback, or, as some believe, defensive posturing.

 

There has been no exchange since Drake’s response was released.  The question remains: Is one even necessary? As ABC 27 notes, the “hotline bling performer sounded “notably lethargic on the song—potentially taking a final bow .”

Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole are two of the most gifted Hip Hop artists in the industry. Both have risen from a place of unparalleled authenticity and realness. 

But when two alphas are pitted against each other, uncharacteristic things sometimes happen. This is the case with the most recent viral illusionary beef between Lamar and Cole. However, after releasing his comeback, J. Cole put out the fire by apologizing to Kendrick Lamar for how he responded in verse.

Dynamics Of Rap Battles In Hip Hop Culture

Rap battles and diss tracks have long been a part of Hip Hop. At times, the lyrical back and forth can become heated, leaving some artists with unintended consequences. In battle, people can lose sight of their purpose to appear to outperform one another. This aptly summarizes Cole and Lamar’s recent quasi-lyrical tug of war.

Sparks Ignited: The Genesis


The release of “First Shooter” is believed to have sparked this feud. Reportedly, Kendrick Lamar felt a way about his name being dropped on the track. The verse in which Lamar’s name was mentioned states,

“Love when they argue the hardest MC.” Is it K-Dot? Is it Aubrey? Or me? We the big three like we started a league, but right now, I feel like Muhammad Ali.”

Lamar responded to the verse with a guest verse on the collaborative album “We Do Not Trust You.” Lamar’s retort went like this:

“Ah, yeah, huh, yeah, get up with me F***k sneak dissin’, first-person shooter, I hope they came with three switches. Mother**** the big three, nigga, it’s just big me Nigga, bum.”

 And reading that leaves little doubt that those lyrics were laced with arsenic and meant to decimate.

Unexpected Turn: Cole Apologizes

Cole did not let it go. In “7-Minute Drill,” Jermaine Cole responded with what some consider a tepid response.” Whether it was lightweight or not is at the discretion of the listener. But everyone got the intent. In general, a battle usually escalates into increasingly creative ways to retaliate. This battle was over before it began. Why?

Cole has been publicly apologizing for what he said, which is one reason. According to the artist, the response “diss track” did not sit well with him. Besides, there has not been much strife between the two throughout their careers.

According to Entertainment Weekly, “While Drake and Lamar have been trading shots for years, Lamar and Cole have been rather cordial, save for a boast from Big Sean’s 2013 song ‘Control.”

Cole Moves From Hype To Authenticity

So, why did this begin in the first place? When the hype becomes too real, people lose sight of their true selves. Cole openly apologized after realizing that what he said on the diss track did not accurately reflect who he was.

According to Entertainment Weekly, J. Cole spoke of his regret for downplaying Lamar’s work. He apologized once more for his folly and stated that he wanted to return to his true path.

Cole: Choosing Integrity Over Ego

Some may be disappointed that Cole chose this route. The artist did what was necessary for him to be okay with what he put out. Character and authenticity go a long way toward earning true respect. Fame and titles come and go. There will always be someone who comes along to take the mantle. The real question is: What does an artist want to be remembered for? As long as an artist prioritizes talent, skill, focus, and work ethic, legacy becomes paramount. That means more than just a temporary title. Kudos to Jermaine Cole for acting honorably.

In contrast, the other 156 tours were only able to rack up 27 billion TikTok views. Taylor Swift has been grabbing attention since her debut. Imagine having that many eyes on you every day!

In hip-hop, mentorship, and artistic influence often play a pivotal role in shaping the careers of rising stars. One such example of this mentorship and mutual respect can be seen in the relationship between Schoolboy Q and Kendrick Lamar.

In a recent appearance on the BACKONFIGG Podcast, Schoolboy Q didn’t hold back in expressing his admiration for Kendrick Lamar. Schoolboy Q took little time deliberating when asked what Lamar taught him. In the flow, the rap artist credited The “It’s Gonna Be Alright” artist with not only teaching him a lot but for salvaging his career. In his words,

“Dot… Dot gave me… so much confidence. Dot made me a rapper.”

But what’s the remarkable story behind Kendrick Lamar’s role in rescuing Q’s career? As per Q’s account, he was teetering on the edge of being let go from TDE. This significant opportunity ultimately led to Schoolboy Q securing a contract with Interscope. Without a doubt, Schoolboy Q’s admiration for Lamar knows no bounds. According to Q, while he understands what fans expect in his words,

“he doesn’t look at it as like, oh, you have to drop every year. Rather, he does what he wants because he moves off peace. He moves off his experiences. “

In essence, his artistic process is characterized by intentionality and thoughtfulness. As he candidly expressed during the interview, he firmly believes that his music should carry a genuine reflection of life. Hip-Hop Legend Dr. Dre On The Current State Of The Genre

Dr. Dre recently had an interview with Kevin Hart on the comedian’s show that streams on Peacock. The hitmaker described those who are shining a negative light on hip-hop today sounds like somebody’s grandfather. Dr. Dre went on to emphasize that the genre is always evolving. He stressed that if you don’t like hip-hop now, then don’t listen to it. The iconic producer said he doesn’t like most of the genre’s music out right now, but he isn’t hating on it.

What Is Dr. Dre Listening To Right Now?

The hip-hop icon was asked who in the genre does he listen to, and the question did not catch him off guard. The Compton native said he gets asked that all the time, but he listens to different types of music. Andre Romell Young, also known as Dr. Dre, revealed the genre he listens to stems from 70s soul to The Beatles. Young even shared he might listen to some polka music after his interview with Hart.  It would make sense the musical genius has an eclectic ear for any genre of music. Dr. Dre then added he “gets inspiration from all types of genres of music.” He could not give the actor a favorite artist but instead complimented his answer by calling it a “favorite of the week.”

Dr. Dre Talks About A “Forever Artist”

Dre spoke on fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar. He made sure it was known that the former president of Death Row Records takes no credit for Lamar’s success. However, Dr. Dre admitted he takes credit for opening the door for him and that’s it. Dre praised the “Humble” rapper calling him a real artist and revealing they have a “fantastic” relationship. Young added the 36-year-old is what people call a “forever artist,” which is someone who can disappear for years and make an enormous comeback. The 58-year-old clarified a “forever artist” is also someone who does not have to drop music all the time to stay relevant. Dr. Dre also considers Snoop Dogg and Eminem “forever artists.”

U.S. Artists With The Smallest Number Of Physical Music Sales

Digital music streaming services offer a wide variety of music at low costs, making them more affordable than purchasing individual songs or physical albums. Last year, the U.S. artists witnessed a surprising comeback in the digital age as vinyl LP sales increased significantly. Luminate reported that the sales of LPs reached an impressive 43.5 million units, indicating a growing trend of music lovers embracing the nostalgic format.

Notably, most of these sales were driven by younger generations, who are experiencing the physical medium for the first time, and enthusiasts seeking to collect rare and limited edition releases. This trend suggests that despite the widespread adoption of digital music streaming services, music enthusiasts still demand significant physical media.

With 82.1 million paying subscribers to on-demand music streaming services, the question remains whether it is worth releasing physical music. To shed light on this matter, Oppizi, an offline marketing company, conducted a new study. The study identifies 10 U.S. artists who have sold the least physical copies of their music. This is based on the most recent data from Chart Masters, which calculates the number of physical single-sales units sold by the top US music artists of all time. In addition, this analysis aims to provide insights into how the declining demand for physical media affects the music industry.

1. Kendrick Lamar

 In 2011, Kendrick Lamar took the independent route and released his debut studio album, Section.80.

Interestingly, this was around the time when streaming services were still in their early stages of growth, and it wasn’t until the mid-2010s that they saw a significant increase in popularity. This could have played a role in the album’s success, as it potentially appealed more to a digital audience than a physical one. Lamar’s early adoption of digital distribution and promotion helped him gain a massive following. This paved the way for his subsequent success and position as one of the most famous artists of his generation.

2. Charlie Puth

In 2015, Charlie Puth debuted in the music industry by releasing his first single, ‘Marvin Gaye.’

Notably, this was the year when all aspects of the streaming music market experienced a significant surge in growth. Revenues exceeded $2 billion for the first time in history, driven by the increasing popularity of on-demand streaming services and the shift towards digital media consumption. This has transformed the way people consume and interact with music. As a result, Puth’s debut single gained widespread popularity and helped him establish a presence in the music industry.

Cardi B’s debut helped her gain recognition in the music industry. She subsequently released her debut single, “Bodak Yellow,” in 2018.

The track became a massive hit and catapulted her to international fame. Therefore, Cardi’s rapid rise to stardom highlights the influence of digital media and social media in promoting and launching music careers in the current era.

4. Selena Gomez

Two of their generation’s most successful U.S. female artists, Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato, both former Disney Channel stars, have emerged. Selena Gomez kickstarted her music career on the Disney Channel by singing the theme song for Wizards of Waverly Place and has sold 80,000 physical singles.

However, she has achieved much greater success and has been crowned the most-followed celebrity on Instagram, with a massive following of 390 million followers. This underscores the growing influence of social media on promoting and launching successful music careers in the digital age.

5. Demi Lovato

In 2021, Demi Lovato sold 2.7 million albums and 23.8 million song downloads in the U.S., which is a testament to the increasing popularity of digital music consumption. Despite the physical singles’ decline in sales, Lovato’s fan base continues to support her music through digital platforms. This shows that artists can achieve significant success in the current era, despite low physical sales.

Furthermore, U.S. artists Imagine Dragons, Post Malone, Billie Eilish, Macklemore, and Travis Scott hold the remaining spots on the top ten list. These artists are widely recognized for their contributions to the music industry and have established themselves as some of their generation’s most successful and influential musicians.

Of all the music formats, vinyl has the most value. Today, Vinyl records could sell for ten times its original price 20 years from now. Often, music lovers feel like digital downloads make them lose out on any sort of physical interaction with the music they are listening to. More people want to experience purchasing, which is why going to a record store and buying a vinyl is more appealing today.

People today are also attracted to buying vinyl records for the album’s art, and exclusive copies can be bought and worth a fortune. Therefore, for music artists looking for ways to promote their music, pushing physical copies could be a great way to give fans that desired nostalgic purchasing experience.”
