A Bad Boy Reunion in Court? Mase Considers Attending Diddy’s Trial

In a move that has sparked widespread discussion, hip-hop artist Mase (Mason Durell Betha) has publicly stated his intention to attend the high-profile trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs, even going so far as to poll his fans on whether he should be present. But it’s Mase’s unique and perhaps surprising perspective on the unfolding legal drama that truly sets this story apart.

Mase and Bad Boy: The Beginning

Mase is acknowledged as one of Diddy’s earliest artists signed to his label, making a swift and significant impact. According to Business Insider,

“Diddy founded Bad Boy Records in 1993 and went on to sign major musicians such as The Notorious B.I.G., Mase, and Faith Evans. It’s impossible to think of ’90s’ and ’00s rap without also considering Bad Boy, which released 13 No. 1 albums from 1997 to 2022.”

Mase’s discography, according to Billboard, includes two number-one hits and six top ten hits.

Mase Changes Paths

In 1999, he surprised fans by announcing his departure from Bad Boy Records. What was more intriguing than his early retirement was his career shift, as headlines revealed his call to the ministry. In 2024, Betha sat down for an interview with BET, where he candidly expressed his unwavering conviction that leaving the industry when he did was the right decision.

The Dark Side of Bad Boy: Mase’s Brush with Danger

During the interview, he mentioned the dangers of being an artist under Diddy’s label at that time. Recalling the period when Notorious BIG lost his life, Mase shared,

“I was ‘trapped’ in a hotel room while ’70 Bloods’ roamed the hallways. I was in a hotel with a young lady. I couldn’t even leave my room because there were about 70 or so Bloods in the hallway.”

Given such risks, one can see why the artist decided to leave.

Bad Blood Over Bad Boy: The Mase-Diddy Conflict

The relationship between Mason Betha and Combs has often been fraught with tension, particularly concerning publishing rights. A 2023 article in The Wrap highlighted a notable incident involving an Instagram post. In the post, Mase accused Combs of engaging in business practices that deliberately disadvantaged artists, including himself, despite their contributions to the success of the iconic Bad Boy label, which earned Combs an Icon Award. However, this dispute was eventually resolved, with both artists indicating in interviews that they have since improved their relationship.

Mase Puts Diddy Trial Attendance to a Fan Vote

Fast-forward, and the Bad Boys Mogul now sits behind bars awaiting trial on major charges. Given the history between the two, many have wondered if Mase would show up. Currently, there is some indication that he will show up. However, he has given it to the fans to decide. Mase appeared on the “Is What it Is” platform and stated,

“I wanna put it out to the fans. I’ll let the fans vote on it unless you wanna vote on it. They’re asking me to come to the Diddy trial, You think I should go this week.”

More Than Just Accusations: Mase’s Nuanced Take on Diddy

The main question is why he would want to attend Diddy’s trial. Mase has clarified that his attendance is not to support any alleged actions of Diddy. If he attends, it is out of compassion and respect. In a previous interview, Mase stated,

“I’m not endorsing anything he allegedly did. Until it’s proven, you want to avoid being one of those people who condemns someone who did good for you. He wasn’t all bad; he did some good. He definitely did some good.”

A Debt of Gratitude: Mase’s Perspective on Diddy’s Contribution

Regardless of whether others agree, it’s undeniable that Diddy played a crucial role in Mase’s rise to fame and is a key reason why the world knows his name. It would be remiss not to acknowledge that. In challenging times, seeing someone’s humanity amid accusations against them can be difficult. It takes a special person to recognize even a hint of goodness in such an individual and have the courage to acknowledge it. This act of support is indeed brave. Given the seriousness of the accusations, those who publicly offer support risk being labeled as endorsers of the actions and seen as pariahs. Mase’s decision to take this stance speaks volumes about his position as a practitioner of his faith, which is truly commendable.

Ma$e vs Cam’ron: a 20 Year Beef Finally Ends

Harlem legends Ma$e and Cam’ron have held a grudge for decades, but it appears they’ve recently buried the hatchet.

The Game and 50 Cent, Gucci and Jeezy, Nas and Jay-Z. The rap game has certainly had its fair share of long feuds. Among them all, Ma$e vs. Cam’ron is perhaps the most vicious. The pair have been trading blows since the late 90s. However, the tide may be changing.

How it All Started

With two New Yorkers, pride and ego are at an all-time high. That’s precisely the case with Cameron and Ma$e, who both hail from Harlem. They go back to childhood, hooping on the same team at Manhattan Center High School. From there, Cam and Ma$e formed the rap group Children of The Corn with Big L, which has boosted in popularity ever since. While their careers would advance, their friendship began to suffer.

When Ma$e retired from the rap industry in 1999 to pursue a career as a pastor, Cam publicly disapproved. In a 2004 Hot97 interview, following the announcement of a comeback album from Ma$e, Cam and Jim Jones joined the call. Things quickly heated with the Dipset members questioning Ma$e’s story, calling him a “fraud” and liar.

Things Get Ugly With Cam and Ma$e

Of course, from that point, the diss tracks started rolling in. “Take ‘Em to Church’ on Cam’s “Purple Haze” album takes aim at Ma$e. In the song, Cam and Juelz Santana mock his return to rap and his faith.

“Everybody Welcoming this, Welcoming that / He wasn’t welcome in the first place, how we welcome him back?”

“Do Harlem a favor, get a church or something,”

A couple of years after “Purple Haze,” Cam further confirmed his disdain for Ma$e in an XXL interview. “I’ll never speak to Mase again.” He told Bonsu Thompson. If you think time heals all wounds, think again. As recently as 2017, Cam’ron shaded his former friend in his music. On his mixtape “The Program,” he raps about the failed reconciliation between him and Ma$e.

“Got this ni**a home, and he passed me a hundo (100 dollars?!) / Told him straight up I ain’t feeling him / Let me curve this ni**a ‘fore I end up killing him.”

He also boldly references rumors of fellow Harlem figure Baby Maine being the one to initially run Ma$e out of town.

“I watched him play Pop Lotti against Baby Maine / At this time, I’m moving heroin in Maryland / They both died, and this n***a turned reverend.”

In a surprising turn, after years of taking the high road, Ma$e finally responded through song. In “The Oracle,” the 46-year-old defends himself against all the claims made over the years. He also questions Cam’s own street reputation.

“Imagine 20 years with a bitter bitch and same the drama/Dame told you do this shit and you don’t see Dame karma.”

“Much dirt as I got on you, don’t even need no research/My hand filthy, heart guilty, niggas like me need church/Tax know you as the nigga that snitched on the Roc/D.C. crips only know you the nigga they shot”

Cam’ron immediately fired back with “Dinner Time,” throwing more petty shots.

“You done opened up a door, I’m petty, ready for war/I ain’t got a sister, only sister I fucked was yours/I know the bars off The Program touched you/How you mad at me, though, you let Mr. Royce touch you (facts).”

Following this, a social media battle ensued. Both rappers walked away feeling like the winner, and obviously, neither wanted to concede. “We’re not cool,” Mase confirmed. “I shook his hand cause I won. That’s it. As a man, that’s what you do after you win unanimously.”

Making Things Right

That latest spat happened 5 long years ago. Since then, it seems both men have decided the drama isn’t worth it.

This past Monday (Aug 1), mase got reflective on an episode of Million Dollaz Worth of Game. While chatting with Gillie Da Kid and Wallo, mase expressed regret over his feud with Cam. “That’s one of the relationships I regret. I think I got two that I regret, and going at Killa, I wanted to do that, but that was like my n*gga, you know what I’m saying? So that really hurt me.” He admitted.

Apparently, Cam felt the same way. In an Instagram video posted by the Ma$e’s sister, the two former teammates speak on the phone and appear friendly. “Killa, what’s good?” Mase says with a grin.

He then cleverly references one of many last disses aimed at him. “Where’s Mr. Petty at these days?” Speaking on a particularly biting line from ‘dinner time’: “You done opened up a door; I’m petty, ready for war.”

Ma$e’s sister, Stason Betha, was just as surprised as fans at the duo repairing their relationship. “Ok now @rsvpmase and @mr_camron I DEFINITELY DID NOT SEE THIS COMING, but I’m here for it!!!! Smh y’all gotta stop with this nonsense or I’m swinging on both of y’all,” she typed.

Ma$e Announces Deal With Death Row Records

In an announcement on Wednesday, Ma$e revealed that he is signing a deal with Death Row Records. The Harlem rapper will be the first artist to rep both Bad Boy and Death Row, the powerhouse labels known for their bitter feud in the 90s.

Ma$e announced the deal in an Instagram video on Wednesday. Earlier this year, Death Row was acquired by Snoop Dogg for an undisclosed amount.

A post shared by MA$€ (@rsvpmase)

“I’m on Crenshaw- just passed Pico, just passed Slauson- and I’m out here to meet with Snoop so I can do another joint venture with Death Row Records,” Ma$e said while riding through Los Angeles. “I’ll be officially the first one signed to Bad Boy and Death Row. And we gon’ get the Tupac thing rekindled. Let’s see where we go with that.”

While the deal is not yet official, Ma$e’s signing would be historic given the bad blood between Death Row and Bad Boy. Their fierce rivalry in the 90s culminated in the murders of Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G.

The 46-year-old helped spearhead Bad Boy’s dominance during the “shiny suit” era. He was responsible for hit tracks like “Feel So Good,” “What You Want” and “Mo Money Mo Problems” along with Biggie. Ma$e released three albums- Harlem World, Double Up, and Welcome Back before leaving in 2012. In the past, he has entertained joining up with Drake’s OVO Sound and Rick Ross’s Maybach Music Group.

Ma$e’s beef with Diddy

Like other former Bad Boy artists, Ma$e’s relationship with Diddy has turned sour since leaving the label. His deal with Death Row may be an attempt to ruffle his former boss’s feathers.

The MC aired his grievances during a recent interview on the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast. During the podcast, Ma$e accused Diddy of not giving him due credit or payment during his time with Bad Boy.

“I felt like I did more than I got credit for, more than I got paid for,” the Harlem rapper explained. He also expressed that he felt as if Diddy wasn’t paying him his worth, causing disdain between the two.

However, Ma$e isn’t the only one plotting to bridge the gap between the rivals. During his appearance on Drink Champs in April, Snoop Dogg revealed he and Diddy have discussed an alliance.

“We can show growth and progression that we can move forward,” the rap mogul said. He also said that he and Diddy “can take this Bad Boy, Death Row, what it used to be, and make it a collaboration on peace and love. ‘Cause that’s who I am. I’m Suge and Puffy.”

Mase Recalls Jay-Z Dissing Him in 1997

Apparently, Jay-Z dissed Mase in one of his songs back in the day. On Jay-Z’s song, “Imaginary Players,” he mentions how there isn’t Rolex diamonds on that Rolex watch. The lyrics go:

“When I see them in the street, I don’t see none of that/Damn playboy, where the fuck is the Hummer at?/Where’s all the ice with all the platinum under that?/Those ain’t Rolex diamonds, what the fuck you done to that?/Y’all rapping-ass niggas, y’all funny to me/You’re selling records being you, but you still wanna be me.”

Mase vs. Hov

Mase appeared on Gillie Da Kid and Wallo’s Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast. The former Bad Boy rapper claims those lines were meant for him. Mase reminisces on how he was one of the first ones rocking big and flashy pieces. He told the hosts that Jacob the Jeweler made a custom watch for the Notorious B.I.G. The watch Jacob made for Biggie had diamonds in the middle and Mase asked the jeweler to make the same watch, but with diamonds all over it. The Harlem rapper said those lines from “Imaginary Players” had to be about him because no one else had a Rolex watch like that. Since he has never seen it before, the Brooklyn rapper probably thought it was fake, but Mase reaffirms that the watch had real diamonds, just not factory diamonds.

Mase actually responded to Jay-Z on 112’s song, “Love Me.”  Mase raps,

“All we hear is platinum that, platinum this/Platinum whips, nobody got no platinum hits/Cats know with me, platinum always wrap my wrist/I come to the awards, quadruple platinum chicks.”

According to Mase, a woman is what made Jay-Z diss him.  The woman was allegedly involved with a member of Jay-Z’s Roc-A-Fella label. During that time, Mase put the woman on his debut album, Harlem World and also had relations with her. Mase confirmed that he and Jay-Z never really had a problem.

“I think I said something on a record and people kind of put it towards Hov, when really I was just trying to be the best. And after my joint sold, I was just talking crazy everywhere, so I might’ve got out of pocket.”

Diddy’s Mom Told Ma$e To Watch Out

Diddy’s mom aka Janice Combs made an appearance on Instagram lately. Mothers always fight for their children and don’t care about being judged for it. Especially when rappers’ moms get into it, you know there’s gotta be a fire in the hole. She apparently voiced against one of the industry’s hip-hop artists Ma$e. After all, what can the rammy be about?

Diddy’s Mom’s Reaction

As smart as she is Janice Combs kept an eye out and swung to action. Saturday 23rd July 2022, Combs did a Live Video on Instagram, making a shoutout to the following respected artists: LOX, biggie, and Ma$e when her mom was hooked up on hearing the last one on the list  and interrupted her son, saying right to the camera: “Don’t mess with my son.” Combs then replied: “Yeah we still love Ma$e, always gonna be love.'” Deep down we know his mother doesn’t approve of any of this.

The fracas between the 2 rappers

It’s no new news that the ‘Bad Boy Records Label‘ singer and its founder Combs have been on bad terms for quite a long time now. However,  the two were once best friends and released several record songs along in the 90s. Their first feud started over publishing but now, more issues are adding to the feud. Considering the 46-year-old rapper pointed his fingers at Combs for getting involved in shady business practices that tricked him out of money. He was not the only one to face financial troubles on the record label. Several artists present brought the matter forward. Despite the two not speaking, Ma$e still tends to talk about the feud in interviews. Moreover, he said how he felt cheated and had not received fair treatment due to Combs.

He also threw shades on Combs on releasing his single entitled “ The Oracle 2: The Liberation Of Mason Betha,” blaming the latter for exploiting Biggie Small’s death. He rapped:

“I’m not hating on your Billi worth/Right now, I’m only saying what you really work/You ain’t no architect/You just a n-gga who know how to market death.”

Furthermore, the relationship became bitter when the american rapper insulted Combs by mocking his Grammy Speech saying :

“@diddy I heard your #Grammy speech about how u are now for the artist and about how the artist must take back control, so I will be the first to take that initiative. Also, before we ask of other ethnicities to do us right we should do us as black people better. Especially the creators. I heard u loud and clear when u said that u are now for the artist and to that my response is if u want to see change you can make a change today by starting with yourself.”

Mase Expounds Upon Reason Why He Released Diddy Diss Track

Mase expounds upon why he released a diss track aimed at Diddy.

The Harlem Rapper Drops Diss Record Against His Former Boss

On Tuesday, Mar. 15, Mase released a song titled “Oracle 2: The Liberation Of Mason Betha.” It is directed at his former manager. It appeared out of nowhere, as the former Bad Boy artist has not been in the spotlight since he returned from his stint as a pastor in 2004.

However, he took to Instagram live on Thursday, Mar. 27, to explain the diss track and why he came for Diddy’s head-top.

“When I see the hurt and the pains of other people on Bad Boy [Records], that motivates me to say something so I don’t be deemed as a person who just made a bunch of money and turned a blind eye. I’m not gonna be like the rest of the people around Puff that don’t tell him he’s wrong,” he said about the music executive. “I’m not gonna be like the yes men around him that seem him ruining people’s lives and never tell him he’s wrong.”

Mase continued speaking his peace, saying people would judge him for his sentiments.

“More people on here would tell me I’m wrong but won’t say anything to him. They’ll judge my beliefs…my Christianity, and…say nothing to Puff…[not even] about ‘a concert for Biggie and Biggie own daughter couldn’t get in.’ They’ll say nothing about that, but all of his friends got 50 and 60 tickets.”

He concluded his thoughts by warning Diddy, “We’re done with your games.”

The 46-year-old ’90s hitmaker has been quiet for some time. However, Mase was still very vocal about his grievances over the years when he did pop up. This recent social media rant was no exception.

Mase Is Vocal About His Beef With Diddy

In 2020, Mase claimed that he requested his publishing rights from Diddy in a $2 million via a plea, but the hip-hop powerhouse rejected it. After accepting his Icon Award at Pre-Grammy Gala that year, the “Victory” rapper went on social media to blast him. During his speech, he touched on the importance of diversity, but Mase wasn’t having it.

“I heard your #Grammy speech about how [you] are now for the artist and how the artist must take back control. So I will be the first to take that initiative. Also, before we ask other ethnicities to do us right, we should do us as black people better. Especially the creators,” Mase wrote in a now-deleted post.

The ’90s Rap Legend Says He Offered Money

“So I offered u 2m in cash just a few days ago to sell me back my publishing–as his biggest artist alive–that always show [you] respect for [you] giving me an opportunity at 19 yrs old. Your response was if I can match what the EUROPEAN GUY OFFER him that would be the only way I can get it back. Or else I can wait until I’m 50 years old, and it will revert back to me from when I was 19 years old. You bought it for about 20k & I offered you 2m in cash. This is not black excellence at all.”

Whether or not the allegations are true, Mase meant business. Maybe he’s even coming to get what is allegedly his back in blood.

Mase Releases New Single Targeting Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs

On Mar 15, rapper Mase released his new single “ORACLE 2: Standing On Bodies.” An alleged sequel to “The Oracle (Cam’Ron Diss),” released in 2017.

Yet, what caught fans’ attention is that the song seems to be dedicated to Sean Combs, a.k.a. Diddy a.k.a. Puff Daddy.

The song doesn’t directly target Diddy. There are several lines that many fans of both Mase and Diddy believed to be about this unfriending.

Lyrics & Meaning

Mase Releases New Single Targeting Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs
Mase’ New Single ‘ORACLE 2: Standing On Bodies’

According to XXL, numerous phrases throughout the song mention key moments between the two artists.

“N****s sayin’ let it go

You buggin’ n***a, I can’t let it be

Tell n****s don’t call for me, I can only talk for me

I know what my budget read

I read the budget every week, then they tried to dangle money; they didn’t think I’d ever leave.

N****s never pay the artists

But they love to pay the freaks.”

The song’s first verse allegedly refers to Mase’s attempt to buy the publishing rights from Diddy in 2020. Mase supposedly describes Diddy’s recording label as “a horrendous business model.”

In “ORACLE 2,” Mase also references how the CEO of Bad Boy Records explodes from Notorious B.I.G.’s death.

“Right now, I’m only saying what you really work

You ain’t no architect

You just a n***a who know how to market death

Go pay his mother what she really worth…”

Mase & Diddy: From Friends to Enemies?

Business and personal relationships are not always a good combination, especially if one of the two parties fails.

For those of you who haven’t been following this story, you probably wondering what the factor that ruined and ended the friendship between Mase and Sean Combs was.

During the ’90s, they were good friends—best friends maybe?—composing many songs together. However, everything changed with some allegations that the Bad Boy founder wasn’t paying his artists fairly. That also includes Mase.

Bad Boy Record Logo.

Several former artists revealed their ex-boss didn’t pay them their respective earnings-or sometimes anything at all. Since then, Diddy’s record label, Bad Boy Records, doesn’t exactly have the best of reputations.

Apparently, Sean Combs refused to pay Mase for the profits during his early career as a rapper. Wow.

After these misunderstandings and possibly arguments, the friendship ended. However, in recent years, Mase has used his social media to bring up this story from time to time.

The 2020 Grammy Awards

During the 2020 Grammy Awards, Diddy took the stage to talk about all the problems related to the music industry’s lack of diversity towards the hip-hop genre.

“I’m being honored by the industry that I love, the family that I love, but there’s an elephant in the room, and it’s not just about the Grammys,” Diddy said during his speech. “This discrimination and injustice everywhere is an all-time high.”

Interestingly, after this speech, Mase quickly took to his Instagram to expose his former friend. The artist mentioned Puff Daddy’s Grammy speech and old business between them, calling Diddy’s business model “horrendous.”

“[You] still got my publishing [rights] from 24 years ago in which [you] gave me $20k,” Mase informed. “Which makes me never want to work [with] [you] as any artist wouldn’t after [you] know someone is robbing you & tarnishing your name when [you] don’t want to comply.”

Surprisingly, Diddy hasn’t commented on Mase’s new single yet.

While we wait for Bad Boy Records CEO response to the alleged allegations of greediness, FMHipHop will be keeping an eye on this. Just like the latest stories in the world of Hip-Hop and entertainment.

The Oracle Vs Dinner Time

Over the holiday weekend rapper turned pastor turned rapper again Ma$e surprised the world by releasing The Oracle A diss record towards his one-time friend and group member Cam’ron.
