This genre has taken the world by storm for the past fifty years.

Chuck D is educating the people of hip-hop’s beauty.

So, take out your pen and paper because we are getting a history lesson in the genre; as well as the political and social conditions that helped this art form rise.

What Is In The Docuseries on PBS?

The docuseries shows us not only musicians, but breakdancers and emcees so inspired by their surroundings that they fed hip-hop.

Executive Producers Chuck D, Lorrie Boula and Yemi Bamiro’s documentary is called Fight The Power: How Hip Hop Changed The World.

The four-part docuseries has guests and hip-hop royalty such as Fat Joe, will.i.am, Ice-T, Melle Mel, Run DMC and MC Lyte.

The documentary is giving its audience a true history lesson dating back from James Brown to future Black Panther party leader Elaine Brown on the influence of hip-hop.

Docuseries Airs On BBC

Many wonder why he chose BBC as the platform to tell hip-hop’s story… but it was because hip-hop is universal.

The pioneer told Rolling Stone, “I’ve been to 116 countries, and to me, hip-hop is more about the world than about one little place in the United States.”

You can stream “Fight The Power” on PBS’ streaming platform and YouTube with a premium subscription.

Chuck D’s Takes On Hip-Hop Globally

Going a little more in depth on Chuck D’s global views of hip-hop. The New York native explains in a PBS interview that hip hop is about knowing who is running the streets.

Furthermore, politics are not one and the same regarding the music genre.

In another interview with Associated Press, he went into hip-hop being a catalyst for the Black Lives Matter movement.

The member of Public Enemy described how the BLM movement spoke politically to the injustice of George Floyd.

That spark or feeling flowed throughout the world and caused many to want to make a change.

He feels hip-hop does the same worldwide.

Remy Ma Was Scared by Mike Tyson Trying to Solicit Sex

Remy Ma recently spoke on a past interaction she had with word class boxer Mike Tyson that left her feeling shaken.

The strange story first came to light last September during the famed athletes Hotboxin’ With Mike Tyson podcast. Fat Joe had featured as a special guest and called back to a memory of Tyson asking Remy to sleep with him in exchange for a Mercedes Benz.

Memory Lane With Fat Joe

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2vNzIDyiPI

“Mike invites me to the house and he says bring Remy Ma with you,” the New York rapper said. “This is around ‘Lean Back’ or some shit like that. We go to the house, he opens the door butt naked … I’m like, ‘What the fuck is up, bro?’”

He continues, “He takes me [on] a tour of the house. I’m not lying to you, every room I walked in, there was a chick in every room. In every fucking room … I’m like, ‘What the fuck? Iron Mike, this guy lives a fucking life.’”

Mike Tyson then chimed in , I said, ‘Joe, just leave Remy Ma.’ She was upstairs and I was blocking her. She was, ‘No, no.’”

Joe then added some additional details, and confirmed Remy declined the offer. “He wanted to keep Remy Ma…He showed this convertible Benz new shit. He was like, ‘You can keep this, all you gotta do is spend one night.’”

“She looked at me like, ‘Joe, if you don’t get me the fuck out this house.’ I was like, ‘Mike, we can’t do that. This is my sister’ … He offered her some fucking 500 Benz..”

Mike ,clearly not taking the ordeal seriously, replied with a laugh “I just liked busting her chops,”

Remy Ma Gives her Take

For Mike and Joe, they night was simply a funny memory. But for Remy Ma, the story brought back an uncomfortable feeling. The Love and Hip Hop New York artist was asked about the story by Jason Lee. After firstly trying the change the topic, Remy eventually revealed she was “scared” by the conversation.

“Listen, I just feel like in 2023, why are we discussing this?” She asked, visibly annoyed. Remy then told Jason that she was just a teenager at the time. She also added that she hadn’t started dating Papoose yet.

“Actually, it’s different now. I feel like women get way more now than then. It’s actually an accolade for you to set your chick out. You don’t even gotta let ’em hit! It is what it is.” She said.

Remy went on, “It was just weird. I’m mad that that story even came out. I was just like … I was scared. I’m scared now. I don’t even know what to say now. I just don’t like it.”

Despite all this, Remy was sure to clarify she didn’t feel offended by Mikes advances.

Mike and The LOX

It’s no secret Mike Tyson has had a checkered past in the public eye with women. From his documented abuse of Robin Givens to his 1992 rape conviction , Tyson doesn’t leave the best impression when it comes to the opposite sex.

Styles P had a story of his own involving Tyson trying to sleep with Eve at a past award show. Last October, the LOX member recalled the awkward story while starting on an episode of Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson.

“Vegas or L.A., it’s one of them awards,” he said. “We see Mike, we’re chilling. Eve is with us, though — us three, there’s nobody else there. And [Mike’s] on his bully and we decided, ‘We gotta protect Eve.’ We was deciding who was gonna get knocked out. I was like, ‘I got a knife. Mike’s gonna kill us!’”

Mike Tyson had just finished serving a three year sentence for his rape conviction.

“He just liked Eve for how she was looking. Eve was nervous; we with Eve so gotta be the protectors, so now we in a fucked up position. Now we deciding who’s gonna take the Mike blow. We decided Louch. Louch was like, ‘Fuck no!’ I’m like, ‘I’ma die! I’m little!’ Nobody can take this blow. We trying to come up with a strategy. What do you do?”

Loud Records Tribute Performance Went Down At 2022 BET Hip-Hop Awards

Loud Records is a legendary record label in the hip-hop culture. Last night, at the 2022 BET Hip Hop Awards, the record label celebrated its 30th anniversary. The 30th anniversary was commemorated by performances of legendary artists.

Steve Rifkind, the founder of Loud Records, spoke before the performance began. He discussed that Loud Records was a dream that came true because of his passion for music.

Loud Records Tribute

When Rifkind finished speaking, the audience got on their feet as Loud Records artists Dead Prez opened the tribute with their hit single, “Hip-Hop.” Stic.man and M-1 had the crowd energized.

Next came Mobb Deep as they performed “Shook Ones Pt. II” and “Quiet Storm (Remix).” Since Prodigy is no longer with us, New York rapper Joey Bada$$ stepped in his place.

Lil Kim also came on stage to perform her verse on the “Quiet Storm (Remix).” The crowd sang her infamous verse word for word.

Loud Records artists M.O.P hit the stage next to elevate the energy in the room. They performed their hit song “Ante Up,” and just like Lil Kim, Remy Ma took the stage with them to perform her famous verse. Remy stayed on stage to pay homage to Big Pun and the Terror Squad. His classic, “Still Not A Player,” was played until Fat Joe joined Remy on stage to perform “Lean Back.”

From the North to the South, David Banner and Lil Flip performed the throwback hit, “Like A Pimp.” The Project Pat and Three 6 Mafia followed as they performed “Stay Fly” and “Chickenhead.” Last but not least, to which everyone was waiting, Wu-Tang Clan closed the performance.

The iconic group is mainly responsible for Loud Records’ claim to fame. Method Man, Raekwon, RZA, and Inspectah Deck gave the crowd something to be excited about as they performed their hits, “C.R.E.A.M.,” “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing ta F’ Wit,” and “Method Man.”

BET Hip Hop Awards have many memorable moments, and yesterday was definitely one of them.

5 Rappers Who Passed On Hit Beats

Legendary producer Young Guru recently discussed how Memphis Bleek passed on Black Rob’s hit single, “Woah”.  There have been plenty of rappers who have passed over beats that eventually became hit records. Here are five rappers that passed over beats that became hits!

Pusha T and “Niggas in Paris”

The anthem for the infamous Watch the Throne album could’ve sounded differently.  The Grammy award-winning song could’ve been in Pusha T’s catalog.  Hit-Boy made the beat and then sent it to Kanye.  Kanye turned around and send it to Pusha.  The Virginia rapper wasn’t feeling the beat because it sounded like a video game to him.  This song turned out to be the best rap song and best rap performance of that year.  Kanye insisted that Pusha get on it because it was going to be a hit in the club.  At the time, Pusha says he wasn’t into that.  He was more into gritty, tough, street records.

Diddy and “0-100”

In 2015, Diddy and Drake got into a little scuffle outside of LIV nightclub.  It was over Drake’s hit song, “0 to 100”.  Diddy wanted Drake to ghostwrite over the Boi-1da beat.  They both had the beat at the same time.  It was planned that Drake was going to write the record for Diddy, but it was taking too long.  So, Drake wrote and recorded his own version.  Diddy didn’t take that too kindly which led to him punching the Champagne Papi.  Good thing, they have put things behind them.

Ghostface Killah and “Girls, Girls, Girls”

Just Blaze, legendary engineer, and producer, discussed Jay-Z’s hit off The Blueprint.  He says “Girls, Girls, Girls” was originally made for Ghostface Killah.  In fact, that was what the beat was called in his Protools, “Ghostface”.  Kanye was also involved with this beat as he praised Ghostface Killah’s rap career.  Kanye and Just Blaze loved Ghostface just like everyone else as they made beats inspired from Ghostface’s albums.  Just Blaze hoped to give it to Ghostface one day, but he played it for Jay-Z one day and he instantly wanted to record over it.  It became a hit record, and years later Just Blaze admitted to Ghostface about the “Girls, Girls, Girls” beat and he replied that he knew that beat was meant for him.

Fat Joe and “Candy Shop”

50 Cent might have to thank Fat Joe for one of his biggest hits.  Producer Scott Storch gave Fat Joe, the “Candy Shop” beat before it was in 50 Cent’s hands.  At the time, the Bronx rapper just released his hit single, “Lean Back” and did not want to do a similar song.  50 Cent heard the beat and Fat Joe told Scott Storch to let him have it.  In fact, this beat was made while Fat Joe was in the studio with Storch.  Fat Joe has credited himself with being a producer on the track alongside Storch.  His song “My Fofo” is sampled on it as he helped put the intro and sounds together.  Scott Storch and Fat Joe’s wife recognized that the record would be a hit.  Fat Joe disagreed and eight months later, “Candy Shop” was all-over hip-hop radio.

The Notorious B.I.G. and “Doin’ It”

The Notorious B.I.G. almost had another big hit under his belt.  Producer Rashad Smith produced the “Doin It” beat with the Brooklyn rapper in mind.  In fact, there’s a sample in the beginning of the song that goes “Go Brooklyn”.  This was going to be the first single for the “Life After Death” album, but unfortunately never happened.  Money was the main issue as Diddy at the time only wanted to pay $10k for the beat.  Meanwhile, Queens rapper LL Cool J heard the beat and was willing to pay $25k for it!  Let’s just say Diddy nor Biggie was too happy when LL got the beat.

Lil Mama Still Has Beef With Charlamagne Tha God

New York artist, Lil Mama, has some words for Charlamagne Tha God.  On Charlamagne’s TV show, he sat down with fellow New York rapper Fat Joe.  On “Hell of a Week”, the two discussed PnB Rock’s tragic death.  Fat Joe expresses that being a rapper is one of the most dangerous jobs in America.  You must always keep your head on a swivel, either the police try to put rappers in jail because of their lyrics or someone from your neighborhood wants to kill you.  Someone posted the interview to Instagram and Lil Mama jumped in the comments.

Lil Mama vs Charlamagne

She went after Charlamagne by saying he was a “b**** a** n****”.  She is referring to her interview with New York’s Power 105.1 The Breakfast Club years ago.  In that interview, Charlamagne caused Lil Mama to cry based on the questions and comments during their conversation.  According to the South Carolina radio personality, he was only joking with Lil Mama, but remains unapologetic.

She even became a infamous meme because of this interview.  I guess Lil Mama was watching the interview as of recent as she states she just realized that Charlamagne tried to “trick” her.  Lil Mama continues in the comments accusing Charlamagne to be jealous of her.

Cocoa Butter on Twitter: "19 times “Lil Mama crying” was the funniest meme ever https://t.co/T3fnzIZ7Oy via @blackmon https://t.co/uIPJgSt2PB" / Twitter

Charlamagne Talks

Knowing how Charlamagne the God is, I’m sure he is not worried about this.  And I’m sure he would be welcome to have Lil Mama on The Breakfast Club to have a conversation.  We all know Charlamagne the God is very outspoken on all matters, especially when it comes to our culture.  Regarding PnB Rock’s death, the popular radio personality is confused as to why rappers will post RIP messages all over social media when their peers die, and still support that lifestyle.  He feels rappers should be smarter with all the deaths that have taken place.  I agree!  Rappers need to make some changes.

Fat Joe Talks About Hip Hop’s Latino History

Hip Hop has always had some Latino mixed in with its African American roots. When Fat Joe tried to honor them, he got several comments that said that the culture was always only African American.

Fat Joe posted a video on his Instagram celebrating the history of Latino Hip Hop. There was a backlash to this, so he made a response video to it.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by FAT JOE (@fatjoe)

Hip Hop started in the Bronx in New York. In the ’70s, it was a dangerous neighborhood and was populated by the disenfranchised, low-income, and immigrants, especially from the Caribbean. This mix is what made the musical inspirations for hip hop, such as reggae and funk, come together.

Hip Hop is both down to its DNA

One of the massive techniques in hip hop, isolating the percussive breaks, comes directly from Jamaican dub music.

The genre came from block parties where the youth, particularly African-Americans, Caribbean and Latino, would come together to party. The DJs needed to create a mix that would please these demographics and create hip hop in the process.

Several of the founders of hip hop are directly related to the Caribbean and Latin America, such as  DJ Kool Herc, DJ Disco Wiz, Grandmaster Flash, and Afrika Bambaataa.

Latinos are so prevalent to hip hop that in the first hip hop film, “Wild Style” in 1983, several of the main characters are Latinos.

This is not even talking about the other two major elements of the hip hop culture, break dancing and graffiti. Both of these also had a major influence from people from Latin American countries, such as Lady Pink and Shabba-Doo.

Instead of being upset that hip hop can not be completely created by African Americans, enjoy the diversity that it offers, something that could only have been created in the melting pot of America.

Fat Joe To Star In “One-Man” Show

Fat Joe will be hitting the main stage in a completely different way. This time, he is stepping into the theater. In the fall, the artist is set to star in a one-person show which will follow his life and career.

The NYC-based show will be called “Vulnerable.” It will highlight the unimaginable highs and unfortunate lows of his career. Mike Tyson did a similar show that also followed his life.

Fat Joe also has the support of many of his celebrity friends, some of whom will be present at the show. For example, Comedian Dave Chappelle will present a special introduction. Additionally, Chris Robinson will direct the show. On top of that, Magic Lemonade and Roc Nation are co-producing the whole thing.

In a press release, Fat Joe stated, “I’m not holding anything back. I’ve always taken pride in my storytelling, but we’re about to take it to the next level. I’m grateful to Dave Chappelle, Roc Nation, and Magic Lemonade for their support in sharing my story and helping make this one-man show the biggest event ever.”

Joe’s family, friends, and closest collaborators will also give personal interviews about the Bronx legend.

Fat Joe is arguably one of the best storytellers to pick up a pad and pen. A long list of rappers considers Joe the best storyteller on and off the mic.

Fat Joe’s “Vulnerable” Show & Memoir Connection

As stated before, the one-person show will follow Fat Joe’s life and career and feature special appearances from other celebrities. As well as borrow autobiographical tales from the rapper’s upcoming memoir, “The Book of Jose.” Announced earlier this year, Joe’s memoir “will explore how Joe overcame the drug- and violence-scarred South Bronx of the 1980s to blossom into one of the pre-eminent powerhouses of his generation.” The memoir drops on Nov 15.

Ja Rule And Fat Joe To Contradict Irv Gotti On Ashanti

Ja Rule is in the game! Recently, the rapper expressed his thoughts concerning Irv’s unrespectful comment about Ashanti on “Drink Champs”. During the interview, Gotti talked about his breakup with Ashanti and how he doesn’t express any remorse now since he had many other love affairs, better ones. Although saying this, Gotti didn’t stop talking about his relationship with the songstress.

Ja Rule made it clear that he doesn’t want to be involved in the beef between the ex-couple. In the podcast, the Murder Inc Founder claimed that her 2002 song “Happy” was recorded after the two had sexual intercourse. The latter simply wanted to react to Gotti’s gibberish and end it. Furthermore, he took the matter to Instagram and posted :

“Brotherly love… The last few days have been very turbulent for me but it’s time to land the plane,” Rule wrote. “I love my sis I love my bro but I DO NOT condone or agree with the behavior nor the way Gotti handled things on drink champs….”

Additionally, Fat Joe criticized the 52-year-old rapper, which he evidently didn’t appreciate. Later off, broke off all ties with him. Joe called his behavior disrespectful towards Ashanti. Also, Fat Joe blamed Ja Rule for not supporting the talented songstress considering the two are good pals.

They even collaborated on multiple songs, including “Mesmerize,” “Wonderful,” and so forth. Ja Rule addressed the matter further and clarified that he has a good bond with both singers and does not wish to be part of their feud. He mentioned on his Instagram story :

“STOP saying I didn’t defend sis and all women when I clearly told Gotti to stop calling Ashanti/women the B word same way I told Joe at Verzuz watch the interview before you talk s—.”

That happened. Irv seemed not to be appreciating those comments as Joe continued:

“Gotti a sucker, man. He a sucker,” Fat Joe says. “Y’all can @ Irv Gotti, Ja, whatever the f**k you want,” he continued. “Whatever Irv has with Ashanti is 20 years old, right. I know he was making some points that mean a lot to him. But when you keep ranting about somebody 20 years later, it felt like he’s not over the young lady, right.”

Despite the chaos going on, Ashanti appeared quite not bothered by the situation as she tweeted, “Morning y’all. Sending out positive vibes and energy.” On top of that, she partnered with her ex Nelly last week to hold a show in Oakland.
