Khalid’s “Scenic Drive” Is Out Now; Features Alicia Keys, 6LACK And More!

Khalid releases a new mixtape Scenic DriveAlicia Keys, 6LACK, JID, and more joined Khalid on his most experimental record.

“Scenic Drive is actually one of the spots that I go to, or I went to a lot in El Paso,” American Young Adult recently shared with Zane Lowe. “It’s this drive up this mountainside, and then you look to the left, and you see Juarez and see El Paso.”

Radio interference, the sound of the door closing and car passing, pieces of Khalid’s hit songs. This begins Scenic Drive. Alicia Keys’ robotic voice joins a couple of seconds later with a short PSA: “Thank you for tuning in The Scenic Drive. We’re here tonight to provide the vibes, so sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.”

While Khalid’s new tape remains the artist’s sincerity and unique sadness, experiments also occur throughout Scenic Drive.

The Scenic Drive Cover Marks The Change

Khalid is the translator of modern youth’s collective unconscious. More specifically, the part responsible for melancholy. The main focus of Khalid’s music is on emotional, romantic experiences. Meanwhile, young people’s financial woes and other problems also appear from time to time.

Khalid’s album covers are also usually melancholic. Scenic Drive is not the first disc to have the scenic landscape on its cover, with the artist in a commonly tragic posture.

However, all Khalid’s album covers had light coloring and were set in the natural landscape. This time the artist is in the nighttime city.

It’s also interesting to see the “car evolution” throughout Khalid’s albums. American Teen cover lacks any vehicle, while Free Spirit already presents the artist on a hippie van. This time, Scenic Drive takes place on a fancy muscle coupe.

The profound change is noticeable, whether it’s just the artist’s change of taste or the new societal perception of melancholy.

Same Inspirations, New Experiments

Khalid still takes a lot of inspiration from synth-pop. However, the artist takes his credo to a new level. Various sound experiments top the Intro mentioned above. Don’t expect a monotonous “Young Dumb & Broke” flow; expect the flitting chorus with the cannonades of ad-libs.

While Khalid is growing as an artist, he progresses as a lyricist. The artist’s brand-name sincerity is now more subtle and complicated, which might be just a result of the growing-up process. Regardless, short phrases with deeper meanings prevail over the record.

#FMSpotlight: Grammy-Nominated Mixer & Engineer John Kercy

Behind every great musician is a meticulous mixer and engineer who lays down the foundation for their records to come to life. And one individual who wholeheartedly resides behind this statement is John Kercy

The Grammy-nominated mixer and engineer defines himself as hard-working, focused, and passionate about music and grooves. Moreso, he keeps his head down and does the work.

Music was introduced to Kercy through his father, who, at the time, was an electronics engineer and technician. Because of his dad’s involvement in the music scene, he was always surrounded by instruments and technical devices. Also, consoles because his father’s friends always came over. Naturally, Kercy fell into it. He took the producing route before realizing that his real passion sprawled in manipulating sounds and conveying emotions through various engineering techniques.

One accomplishment of his was bringing his parents to the GRAMMYS.

“Music wasn’t necessarily something they saw me doing. They envisioned me being a doctor, civil engineer. When I was able to take them to the GRAMMY’s, it was that reassurance that he’ll be good.”

His inspirations include Bruce Swedien (Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones), his close friend/mentor, Fabian Marasciullo, and Jimmy Douglass (Timbaland).

When working on a record, he needs his speakers, which have been by his possession for 11 years.

In terms of mixing, he aims to find the soul of the record. Sometimes it’ll be a groove or bassline or singer. His goal is to accentuate the song’s core elements—adding specific ear candy to make people feel immersed in it.

“When people press play, I want them to hear some sort of emotion. To get lost in the record,” he continues.

The majority of the songs he’s worked on have spoken to him.

He says, “If it [a track] doesn’t spark any ideas in me, I turn it down because it’s a disservice to the artists and producer. Emotion is a vessel in music.”

He enjoyed bringing two songs to life: “Floods” by Lucky Daye and “Like I Want You” by Giveon

Kercy adds, “When I heard the songs, it sparked something in me to go in on them. The outcome speaks for itself.”

For others looking to become engineers or mixers, Kercy suggests that they should be tech-savvy, musicians, and have people skills. He also gives them this word of advice:

“Do it for the right reasons. It takes practice. If you don’t love it, you won’t make it. You have to have a passion for music and engineering.”

If he could go back to the start of his career, he’d tell himself:

“It’s going to be a long road. No matter what, keep going and remember the love for the music.”

Outside of music, he enjoys motorsports and cooking. In the future, he’d like to work alongside Bruno Mars. The star engineer lists “Leave The Door Open” by Bruno MarsAnderson .Paak and “You’re Mine Still” Yung Bleu and Drake as his favorite songs.

About John Kercy

Kercy has worked with an abundance of talented musicians ranging from Khalid to 50 Cent. He is R&B’s best-kept secret. Most recently, his work was praised on Giveon‘s “Heart Break Anniversary,” which is now certified platinum.

Kercy plays a very pivotal part in the creation of a hit record, and he prides himself on his ability to add emotion and texture to a record and then translating the emotion of the record to the common ear. He is currently working on Lucky Daye and India Shawn‘s upcoming project.

In Hip Hop Memory of Festivals and Concerts featuring Khalid

Khalid’s Big Hits Make Bigger Impacts

Music is one of the best forms of art ever known. Over the years, there have been songs and artists that have been able to create lasting impacts. Music festivals and concerts allow for thousands of people to come together as a group to embrace the love of music. Different artists create unique impacts. Two years ago, Khalid headlined Boston Calling

The festival allowed Khalid to create an amazing concert-like performance for his audience. There was pushing and shoving in order to see the artist up close to live the full music experience. The adrenaline rush for Khalid and his audience was breathtaking. He sang some of his top hits like “Young Dumb & Broke” ,” “Location”, and “Love Lies”. Everyone sang the words with him, as these songs are unforgettable.

Khalid Treats Festivals like A Concert Performance

With Khalid only being 22 years old, he knows how to speak to his own generation. Khalid is able to connect to his audience by the way he performs with his words and stage presence. Flashing lights, choreographed performances, and his words are what makes him so exciting to see!

The importance of music festivals and concerts are anything but minimal. We come together to enjoy the artists we value. Some concerts and festivals are delayed because of the pandemic, but at the end it will be worth it. Khalid is a great performer through the way he expresses himself, which makes the music experience that much more important.

Tyler The Creator Hits Number One With IGOR Album

Salutations FM Trendsetters and FM Hip Hop Heads!  One of the most controversial rappers of this generation, Mr. Golf Wang himself, Tyler The Creator, has been known to be both lyrical and underrated by most.  Some say his controversial madness and conflicts, as well as a media personality,  outshines his talents.  Others say his outlandish behavior seen in public overtakes his incredible punchline and rhyme ability.  Most just say he is just plain “weird“.  Well surprisingly, the Odd Future frontman surpassed the epic Father of Asahd album by DJ Khaled, which makes it the number one album on the Billboard 200.
